"Ghana's parliament has passed a tough new bill that imposes a prison sentence of up to three years for anyone convicted of identifying as LGBTQ+.
It also imposes a maximum five-year jail term for forming or funding LGBTQ+ groups.
Lawmakers heckled down attempts to replace prison sentences with community service and counselling.
It is the latest sign of growing opposition to LGBTQ+ rights in the conservative West African nation.
The bill, which had the backing of Ghana's two major political parties, will come into effect only if President Nana Akufo-Addo signs it into law. He previously said that he would do so if the majority of Ghanaians want him to.
Gay sex is already against the law in Ghana - it carries a three-year prison sentence."

LGBT+ Ghana Rights press release on the Bill passed below. You can donate here to the organisation which works to support lgbt+ Ghanaians (and usd/euro go far in Ghana against the cedi). The bill in place not only endangers the lives of so many lgbt+ Ghanaians but their freedom as well. It is really significant and heartbreak this is happened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Rightify Ghana (a human rights org), a description of what the parameters for this bill does is, "The anti-LGBTQ Bill includes provisions that criminalise the mere identification as LGBTQ+ and "related activities," including same-sex sexual activities, the use of sex toys (classified as "objects" in the Bill), and cross-dressing. Under this draconian draft law, individuals face imprisonment ranging from three months to three years. Additionally, allies, donors, activists, human rights defenders, and anyone perceived as a "promoter" of LGBTQ+ rights, including journalists, could be sentenced to three to five years in jail."

The Best News of Last Week - April 25, 2022
🐺 — Hope you had a great weekend. Here’s some good things that happened last week from around the world 1. Spain makes it a crime for pro-lifers to harass people outside abortion clinics
Tumblr media
Spain has criminalized the harassment or intimidation of women going for an abortion under new legislation approved by the Senate on Wednesday.
The move, which involves changes to the penal code, means anti-abortion activists who try to convince women not to terminate their pregnancies could face up to a year behind bars.
Anyone trying “to impede [a woman] from exercising her right to voluntarily interrupt pregnancy” through “bothersome, offensive, intimidating or threatening acts” will face jail time of between three and 12 months, or community service, the text reads.
2. India’s first openly gay prince vows to fight for ‘conversion therapy’ ban
Tumblr media
Royal prince Manvendra Singh Gohil is fighting for a more accepting future for the LGBTQ+ community in India. Gohil has faced an onslaught of homophobic attitudes and was rejected by his parents, Maharaja and Maharani of Rajpipla, as the public turned against him.
Despite this, the prince has pushed ahead with his efforts to support the minority queer community in India. He launched the community-led charity Lakshya Trust two decades ago. The organization aims to educate on the topics of sexual tolerance, gender equity, HIV/AIDS and the LGBTQ+ community in the Gujarat state of India.
The prince has continued to support the community. In 2018, Gohil opened up his 15-acre palace grounds to become a center for India’s LGBTQ community.
3. More than one million African children protected by first malaria vaccine
Tumblr media
More than a million children in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi have now received at least one dose of the first anti-malaria vaccine, the WHO said Thursday. The “breakthrough” RTS,S vaccine was pioneered in Malawi in April 2019 and found to be safe and to substantially reduce severe cases of the disease

4. French Town to Light its Streets With Bacteria Luminescence That Needs No Electricity
Tumblr media
The turquoise blue glow bathing the waiting room in Rambouillet, comes from a marine bacterium gathered off the coast of France called Aliivibrio fischeri. The bacteria are stored inside saltwater-filled tubes, allowing them to circulate in a kind of luminous aquarium.
Since the light is generated through internal biochemical processes that are part of the organism’s normal metabolism, running it requires almost no energy other than that needed to produce the food the bacteria consume. A mix of basic nutrients is added and air is pumped through the water to provide oxygen.
To “turn off the lights”, the air is simply cut off, halting the process by sending the bacteria into an anaerobic state where it does not produce bioluminescence.
- we’re giving the bacteria jobs now
5. California grid set record of 97% renewable power on April 3
Tumblr media
The California Independent System Operator (ISO) set a new record on April 3, when 97.6% of electricity on the grid came from clean, renewable energy.
- This is really exciting! California really has been upping and upping their game each year I swear.
6. Costs to ship breast milk now covered for military and DOD civilian nursing mothers
Tumblr media
Nursing mothers in the U.S. military or the Defense Department civilian workforce now may be reimbursed up to $1,000 to ship breast milk when on official travel for more than three days, under a revised Pentagon policy adopted earlier this month.
Volunteers from the Air Force’s women’s initiative team have been pushing for the reimbursement for more than two years.
They had found that on average, 18% of active-duty airmen go on temporary duty orders within the first year of giving birth. Shipping breast milk can cost hundreds of dollars, which can be unaffordable to young parents early in their military careers, the team said.
7. Six pups born to pair of wild red wolves in North Carolina
youtube
A litter of endangered red wolves has been born to a wild pair of parents in eastern North Carolina for the first time in four years. The six pups were born in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.
The wild births are a big deal for a species nearing extinction. Red wolves are the rarest canine predator on earth. Only 20 are known to remain in the wild, living in five sparsely populated areas of eastern North Carolina.
. . .

Ghana's parliament passed a bill on Wednesday that further clamps down on the rights of LGBTQ people in the West African country.
The "Human Sexual Rights and Family Values" bill enjoys support from a majority of lawmakers in Accra and has been sponsored by a coalition of Christian, Muslim, and Ghanaian traditional leaders.
Same-sex intercourse in Ghana was already punishable by up to three years in prison, but while discrimination against LGBTQ people is common, no one has ever been prosecuted under the colonial-era law.
The new bill, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill, now also imposes a prison sentence of up to five years for the "wilful promotion, sponsorship, or support of LGBTQ+ activities."
Opposition lawmaker Sam George, the main sponsor of the bill, called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to approve it.
"There is nothing that deals with LGBTQ better than this bill that has been passed by parliament," George said. "We expect the president to walk his talk and be a man of his words."
The bill has been widely condemned by rights activists and still has to be validated by the president before entering into law, a move observers believe is unlikely before an election in December. President Akufo-Addo has not confirmed if he will sign the bill into law.
'You cannot criminalize a person's identity'
Members of Ghana's LGBTQ community are worried about the implications of the bill and an umbrella group of lawyers and human rights activists in Ghana known as the "Big 18" has condemned it.
"You cannot criminalize a person's identity and that's what the bill is doing and it's absolutely wrong," said Takyiwaa Manuh, a member of the coalition. "We want to impress on the president not to assent to the bill, it totally violates the human rights of the LGBT community."
Founder and director of "LGBT+ Rights Ghana" Alex Donkor said the passing of this bill would "further marginalize and endanger LGBTQ individuals in Ghana."
"It not only legalizes discrimination but also fosters an environment of fear and persecution," he said. "With harsh penalties for both LGBTQ individuals and activists, this bill threatens the safety and well-being of an already vulnerable community."

IS 🇺🇬’S ANTI-LGBTQ A FOREIGN IMPORT?
Ghana’s parliament recently followed Uganda in passing an anti-gay bill. It has yet to be signed by President Akufo Addo but has already drawn heavy fire from global rights groups, as has the new wave of homophobia sweeping across Africa.
Supporters of Ghana’s and Uganda’s tough anti-gay stances say that the LGBTQ movement is a corrupting, non-African influence imposed by the West. But could the same actually be said for homophobia? Could it be a colonial import to the continent - with negative African attitudes towards homosexuals shaped and fostered by European teachings? And could modern-day Western influences be radicalising these attitudes? Even today, groups such as US-based Family Watch International have been accused of lobbying for legislation criminalising homosexuality in Uganda, Kenya and Ghana.

Absolutely disgusting. Not just the bill itself, but the continued way the extensive and expansive history of queerness in Africa.
What's especially hurtful is the hand the US and other imperial powers have in getting these laws passed only to have people go full homonationalism and justify genocide of these same people because "they oppress LGBTQ people" using the most circular reasoning and ignoring the conditions that got us to this point.
Black queerness, including Black transness IS Black history. Never erase our people.

In "honor" of the Hogwarts Legacy release, and all the (rightful) discourse around purchasing it and/or playing it via other means (re: pirating), here are more productive ways to spend your time that don't directly contribute to the eradication of legal and medical rights of marginalized folks.
You could start by checking out and donating to the following LGBTQ+ oriented charity groups and organizations:
Lavender Rights Project, a group dedicated to elevating the power, autonomy, and leadership of the Black intersex & gender diverse community through intersectional legal and social services. -> [ LINK ]
LGBT+ Rights Ghana, who has established a Community Support Fund Initiative to provide support and empower members the beloved Ghanaian LGBTIQ community who are financially constrained. -> [ LINK ]
Marsha P. Johnson Institute, whose mission is to organize, advocate, and heal the Black trans community. -> [ LINK ]
Mermaids UK, who is dedicated to helping transgender, nonbinary, and otherwise gender-diverse children and their families get access to the resources they need (and who has been a primary target of Rowling's hateful attacks) -> [ LINK ]
The Trevor Project, who provides countless resources for LGBTQ+ individuals and the broader community, including access to therapeutic, medical, and financial aid where needed. -> [ LINK ]
The Transgender Law Center, who provides the resources necessary to advance the legal rights of transgender and gender nonconforming people. -> [ LINK ]
You could also check out these organizations dedicated to helping the international Jewish community:
The Lithuanian Jewish Community, who is reviving and rebuilding itself from Soviet oppression during the 1980s. -> [ LINK ]
The JDC International Centre for Community Development, who is devoted to providing an in-depth perspective on the phenomena of Jewish community, identity, and social welfare. -> [ LINK ]
The Anti-Defamation League, whose greater mission is to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. -> [ LINK ]
The Jewish Braille Institute (JBI) International Library, a non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the Jewish and general cultural needs of visually impaired, blind, physically handicapped and reading disabled individuals worldwide. -> [ LINK ]
If you want to get more involved, then check out and donate to the following mutual aid groups and spaces to help local and international communities:
Buy Nothing Project -> [ LINK ]
Food not Bombs -> [ LINK ]
Foundations for Intentional Community -> [ LINK ]
Freedges Community Pantries -> [ LINK ]
Industrial Workers of the World -> [ LINK ]
It's Going Down -> [ LINK ]
Little Free Library -> [ LINK ]
Little Free Pantries -> [ LINK ]
Repair Cafe -> [ LINK ]
Sharing Cities -> [ LINK ]
Slingshot Collective -> [ LINK ]
Transition Network -> [ LINK ]
Trash Nothing -> [ LINK ]
And, if you're still contemplating buying the game, or even pirating it, then here are a few extra steps you can take:
Walk out of your room.
Open your door to the outside of the house.
Walk to the nearest patch of this thing known as "Grass". It looks like green lines on the earth.
Bow down, like you bow down to fascists, onto the grass, and lay your hands on the floor. Really get in there and wiggle your fingers.
Walk back inside.
Be happy!
Rinse and repeat for bonus benefits, such as not being obnoxious on social media.
And, when you log back in to play Hogwarts Legacy, check out this cool image!

This music video is by Angel Maxine, Ghana's only openly transgender musician. It opens with the words “Ghana is colonially homophobic." The song ‘Wo Fie’ - ‘your home’ in Twi- premiered in July 2021, a month after a bill criminalizing LGBTQ+ people and those who support their rights was leaked online. “I know that the day the bill is passed, I will be in jail for five years or more. That is the truth,” says Maxine. “As I talk to you right now, I am being careful because I can be assassinated, framed to be put in jail.”
Threats to Ghana’s queer communities are coming from outside forces. In 2019, a US conservative Christian organization called World Congress of Families, hosted a conference in Accra. Self-described as a network that “seek[s] to restore the natural family as the fundamental social unit and the ‘seedbed’ of civil society”, the WFC has a large international influence on anti-LGBTQI+ sentiment and legislation in several countries.
The bill threatens imprisonment and conversion therapy for any Ghanaians identifying as queer or anyone who intends to date an intersex or queer person. The bill would enable prosecution of anyone dressing in a way perceived as different from their biological sex. It also introduces legislation that criminalizes any advocacy for queer right.
In this protest song, Angel Maxine includes a warning that “you may soon be arrested for watching/sharing this video”. Her message? LGBTQ people are already part of Ghanaian communities and belong.
