I love the ending of ghosts Because Alison and Mike leave.
Ghosts has always been about a set of unlikely characters being trapped in a house and forced to spend time with each other. In season one the only reason Alison didn't leave and never look back was because she couldn't, the loan, the captain's trickery etc. As time goes on they become a family who genuinely love and care about each other, but they are still trapped together.
By the time of the finale, the ghosts have matured enough to let Alison go for the sake of her wellbeing. Their afterlives probably will be worse without her around, but they're willing to put that aside and sacrifice their own happiness so that Alison can live an easier, more normal life with the rest of her family.
And the fact that Alison returns to Button House to see the ghosts on a regular basis for decades after, solidifies that their relationship is no longer just circumstance, but genuine love for each other. Alison's grown enough from season one that she doesn't just abandon and forget about them after moving, but keeps coming back time and time again to catch up.
I understand why someone might not like the ending, but the fact that the characters make the choices that they do is incredibly meaningful to me.

I'm so emotional about the Ghosts finale/xmas special guys.
Button House not only restored to all its glory, but FULL of people. Full of televisions, music, conversations to spy on, audiobooks, people to watch. An endless stream of entertainment and company for the ghosts. So much LIFE for them to witness.
And people are going to die there, you just know it. So there will be new ghosts, potentially, for them to meet and get to know.
Kitty joining in the sing-a-longs in the on-site nursery and dancing at 50th wedding anniversaries, discos and kids parties.
Robin getting to do his zumba classes and hang out with the lads on stag-dos, tagging along on pheasant shoots and playing giant chess with Julian in the garden.
Julian having real life golfers to follow around, not to mention the hen parties and dirty weekends (cheeky!). Also, his family might visit, or a party conference!
Fanny meeting all the dogs people bring along, attending all the big events and rating the decorations and the outfits like Joan Rivers with The Captain. Seeing female CEOs and innovators treat themselves to a weekend of pampering and being glad that they get to be independent and clever as she never got to be.
Pat seeing the successive generations of boys running riot in the grounds while their parents are on the course/in the spa. Watching them build camps and play soldiers - his family visiting the hotel for their milestones, even little Pat's wedding.
Thomas watching the night receptionist work on his novel, being there for the launch when it gets published. Watching the soap operas of other people's love affairs and developing crushes and head-canons for the staff.
The Captain attending staff briefings and chasing the manager around so he can give orders and see people follow them. Kicking it into overdrive for weddings and big events. Losing his mind when the weather man from TV comes to stay for a week and chokes on a piece of steak.
Humphry's head balanced on the reception desk so he can do his 'Mr Cheese' roleplay and keep an eye on the lobby, listening to all the staff gossip and practicing his French on foreign guests.

I bet Julian is going to love it being a hotel I just have a feeling he will be haunting the 'honeymoon suite' a lot...

My biggest hope for the Christmas special / finale is that it doesn't feel like a finale. Like it doesn't follow the ending tropes I hate.
I don't want Alison to lose her power.
I don't want the found family to break up.
I'm fine with one or maybe even two ghosts being sucked off. Really do feel like they're building up to Robin going. But then they could also surprise us by having it be someone like Julian or Pat.
But mostly I just want it to feel like a Christmas special first and a finale second. I want them to leave the door open for potential specials and skits in the future if the gang ever feel like it again (like Vicar of Dibley and Red Dwarf). I want the show to end but know that they're all (mostly) still there in that house driving each other mad.

I overall enjoyed the episode tbh, everyone was in their element, both Betty and Fanny in doting grandma mode on opposite sides, Kitty being jealous of the baby, Thomas being in denial (still), Robin not feeling Christmas-y enough, Pat’s babytalking, it was all beautiful
Fanny and Julian accidentally getting caught due to their ghost powers I absolutely loved
The exorcism bit was interesting, it had me slightly on edge but it was still a cool plot point. Alison smiling when she just so much as hears the ghosts behind her, she doesn’t even needs to see them to know they’re still there
Still neutral on the baby stuff. Mia herself is adorable, of course, Mike and Alison seem to be good parents so far, I’m just not bothered about baby plots that much
The only issue I have is the “breaking up the found family” bit. It doesn’t go all the way with it, it’s a lovely twist to have Mike and Alison regularly come back, it’s just that whole “you have a ‘real’ (biological) family now so you should move on from your found family” thing I’m not a fan of. The very end does soften the blow, though, it’s satisfying if nothing else
… oh and Humphrey was there! :D

As a kid whose dad died when he was 6, this Christmas Special was absolutely wonderful.
I hope my dad is haunting my mum's house together with the most unlikely bunch of people. I hope he's seen me grow up and is proud of how much I'm like him. I hope he's still got all his silly phrases and habits and I hope it's rubbing off on everyone around him.

The Christmas episode of BBC Ghosts has got me good. The tears are flowing freely at Pat's family videos and Captain being Fairy Godmother to Kitty is both hilarious and poignant as he has always been a parental figure to her and has now stepped into the void left by Mary and I am emotional about this it was the perfect Christmas episode I love this silly ghost show so much.

SPOILERS FOR THE GHOSTS CHRISTMAS EPISODE!!!!!:
I just realised that when the hotel became a thing, the people who ran it almost definitely got rid of Robins mouse family and now I'm so sad.

What if every time Alison visits she brings little things to do, like imagine her just bringing different board games to play with the ghosts. Idk what everyone else does with their families but in mine there is a lot of board games.

okay so I know I'm a little late, but i wanted to throw in my take to the whole BBC ghosts christmas special debate thingy (also this is a full adhd rant so this may not make any sense)
I didn't hate the Christmas special and I fully get why they ended the show that way, it was always going to end that way. it just felt so rushed and the biggest switch up possible.
like in the couple episodes before it was all "we'll stay here we can make it work, there's so much room and we'll find a way to have a good life with our baby in the house, itll be stressful but all we can do is try" and then in the Christmas special we found out Mia was born, and that Mike's mum has been staying with them for a while, and then it was fully centered around Mike's mum and then just turned into "were moving out!" so quickly?????
all of the character development with Mike and Alison with their baby happened off screen, it felt like them wanting to move out was just slapped on the end because they forgot to put it I'm the script before, and the way they just reversed all of kitty's development hurt
this is obviously no hate towards the six idiots or anyone else involved, it's still one of my favourite shows and I'll always go back to watch it and I wouldn't be surprised if half of it was the BBC fucking a lot of things up since they like to do that a lot, but I'm just still generally disappointed with the last episode.
