This event will feature photographs taken by Alice Arnold during the early years of Giant Step; a DJ set by DJ Smash + guests; and a panel discussion with Paper Magazine founder, David Hershkovits, Giant Step co-founder and CEO, Maurice Bernstein, Head of Production at Kenzo Digital, Erica Lee Alice Arnold is a documentary media maker and educator who creates, edits, designs and photographs projects that explore the urban environment and visual culture — from street art to advertising and from sidewalks to electric signs. Her films are in the collections of university libraries throughout the United States and have screened at MoMA and other festivals. She is a NYFA Photography Fellow, a Fulbright Fellow in film and an Adjunct Professor at the City University of New York. 〜3人集えば文殊のケイプ〜

僕のお店のようなワンオペレイション・スタイルのBARBERは、拘りが凝縮された空間で「ただ散髪する」のとは一線を引き、癖を効かした接客に確かな技術と提案を来訪者に提供することで、インディペンデントな存在が確立でき成り立つローカルビジネス。と自負っちゃいますが、最初から狙い通りうまくいくわけがなくアップ&ダウン、トライ&エラーを繰り返し現在に至ります。

　2010年に地元の駅前商店街で開業した当時、メンズに関しては刈り上げに対する抵抗が強い方が多く、今となってはド定番な2ブロックをする人すら珍しく、東洋人は後頭部がフラットでボンノクボ辺りの骨が出ておりハチが張っているため、ネイプを残すとフォルムが悪くなるから刈り上げをレコメンドしてもいい反応は返ってこず、悶々とした日々を送っていたのを思い出します。

　そんな時にロッテルダムはオランダのシュコーラムを始め、海外&国内の粋な「BARBER」がSNSで発信し始め、その魅力にズブズブと浸かっていきながらも、それを求める人は目の前にいなかったし、クラシカルなイメージが強かったのと自分自身にバックボーンがなかっため取り組むまでには至らず、みーてーるーだーけー状態が何年も続きました。

　その流れのなかに「中村商店」が浮上してきたのは、はっきりいつだったか覚えていないけど、かなり早い段階で頭角を現し動向をチェックするようになりました。カットケイプにしては攻めてる値段で、でもデザインが良く買おうか迷ったんだけど、寸法見たら膝ぐらいまでしかなく、西洋バーバーを意識してとのことかな？と思ったり、、、。何せ僕は足先まで覆うサイズが欲しかったからスルーし続け、それでもニューデザインが紹介されればオンラインショップを見ては、悩み、買わないを繰り返していました。そ・し・て！待ち侘びた今の定番のサイズH200cmがオフィシャルリリースされるようになり、即ゲットしたのがNK supply’s capeのフラッグシップモデル“Model 19”でした。

　時系列でいうとそれより少し前に「BARBER SHOP -Daia- prod 松川 晃弥」がyou tubeで公開され、僕のナードなアンテナがスパークし、これだよ！これ！と思い上がり、スキンフェードをマスターしたい一心で独学で取り組み始め、instagramでフェードスタイルをアップし始めます。中村商店のバーバーケープを着用したまま仕上がりの写真をアップすることで届くべき人に届くよう発信し続けました。その動向をいち早くキャッチしたのが、今回のミラクルを生み出したキーパーソン“CULTURE PODS FM”のパーソナルMCであり、デザインの仕事を請け負う“KOMITSU DESIGN”の32でした。

　久しぶりに会う彼は独立して間もないころで、相も変わらずストリートカルチャーを追い続けていました。既にルーゾーの青缶を愛用していて、クロップベースのゴリゴリのハイスキンフェードにポマードを塗り、ストリートファッションとなんら違和感ないフェードスタイルを確立しようとしていました。最初はダウンバングから今のアップバングに至るまで、試行錯誤しながら髪の面倒を見さしてもらっています。

　僕が移転することも当然のように話ながら散髪する日々が続き、新しい店に何が必要かを相談したりしながら、時にそれはコームだったり、オリジナルTシャツだったり、、、。ピントがなかなか定まらないが、お互いバーバーに必要なものは何かを模索してる中、CPFMで中村商店のことを喋った回を中村夫妻が聴くというミラクルが起きます。このことがきっかけで、中村夫妻と32がやりとりを始め、まさかの！？CBC(Custom Barber Cape)やってみませんか？って流れが生じるわけです。夢？No.正夢。

　2022年3月6日移転開業初日を無事終え、次の日の店休日に32に「会わせたい人がいるんです」と連れてこられたのが中村さんご本人！というサプライズをぶちかまされ、僕は全く知らされていなかったので面食らい、3人でケープのサンプル生地を見ながら最終打ち合わせをする粋な計らいに、胸が熱くなった日のことは今でも鮮明に覚えています。

　縁と縁が結び合って出来たスペシャル・バーバー・ケープは毎日ヘビーユーズしていますが、大量生産の既成ケープとは比べものにならないぐらいタフだし、バーバーにとってマストアイテムであるケープが世界に1つしかないものを使っていることに、ヘアワークのモチベーションがアガります。そんなケープ今まであったかよ！？ないよねって話。敢えてバーバー感を出さない内装と外装にした店だけに、サインポールの赤白青のケープを用いることで、主張しすぎないバーバー愛を表現するのが僕なりのカルチャーに対してのアンサーであり、GIANTSTEPSをストライプ状にプリントすることで、最初に手にした中村商店の“Model 19”をサンプリングしてフレッシュなデザインに仕立てるギミックがヒップホップ・マインドに通じてたりする想いが詰まったカスタム・バーバー・ケープなのです。

いつも当店をご愛顧していただきありがとうございます。

2022年3月から新拠点に移りもうじき1年が経とうとしています。

旧店舗から合わすと開業して丸13年、28歳で開業したので今年で40歳!?になってしまったわけですが、飽き性の自分がよくこんなにも長く零細理髪店を続けられたもんだ、としみじみ思います。

それは皆様のサポートがあってこそです。感謝しております。

さて本題である価格改定ですが、新拠点での成果を確定申告申請前の決算書で現実的な数字と睨めっこする日々を続け経営分析をしました。

分析した統計を元に、上がり続ける非消費支出(税金、社会保険料)、一部取り扱い理美容商材、道具の値上げ、そして既に値上がりしている電気料金が今年4月から更に値上げされることが予想され、其れ等を想定した上で算出した結果、価格改定せざるおえない状況であることを認識しました。心苦しくはあるのですが今年4月から現在の価格(旧価格)より値上げさせていただきます。
