THE CHOSEN’s cast and crew are sharing their favorite parts of making Season 4 of the hit TV show.

“How high-stakes the scenes have gotten and how intense they get,” Abe Bueno-Jallad, who plays Big James, said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a season that’s truly like this one.”

Lara Silva (Eden) joked that her favorite thing about the upcoming season was “that I don’t really have to do a whole lot.”

“This kid, Jared, he’s trying to get through chemo currently,” Giavani Cairo (Thaddeus) shared. “So a few of us went there from week to week and just tried to cheer him up. That’s the most rewarding experience this season.”

Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, pointed to some “really great…one-on-one scenes” that he got to have with characters he hasn’t really interacted with in previous seasons.

Director and co-creator Dallas Jenkins agreed with Roumie, adding that he loves the “quieter scenes” between two characters “where we just get to really explore the depth of thought and emotions that Jesus and the disciples go through.”

Season 4 promises to be bigger than ever before, with Jenkins calling it “our most emotionally challenging season.”

“There was the year of preparation, the year of population is happening, and [Jesus is] increasing in popularity,” he explained. “Season 4 is where it starts to turn.”

While the upcoming season is building towards the crucifixion, Jenkins told Fox News there are still some bright spots.

“There’s lots of joy, there’s lots of laughter, there’s lots of miracles that we get to experience, which is one of the reasons why we want people to see this on the big screen and see this together,” he said. “But season 4 is a time where the fact that the people around Jesus just aren’t quite getting it and the reason that he’s here does start to get bigger and more important in his ministry.”

I admit it, I've been turning my nose up at the Christian series The Chosen for over a year. And now, I confess, I'm hooked and I #bingeJesus1 regularly. I thought it would be a neat little series with a nice Christian moral, but no. The cast is incredible, the actors excellent. Jesus (Jonathan Roumi) is believable, endearing, profound: he laughs, he dances, he makes jokes, he is unpredictable and never says what tomorrow will be like (a running gag in the series), he calls to order his overprotective and proud disciples who don't understand anything and bicker all the time, he runs into his mother's arms, he plays with children, and whoever lets himself be looked at by him is pierced to the very depths of his entrails. The Chosen - followers of Jesus

Between the vast number of characters, smaller roles for some, and the recasting of actors, I can’t be the only viewer to get a little confused about who is who on the show right now. I have made a reference list for myself and wanted to share it in case anyone else needs a little help too.

Spoilers for seasons 1 and 2. (photos are taken from The Chosen’s facebook gallery, google images, and screencaps of the show)

Thaddeus

Played by Giavani Cairo. A stonemason who met Jesus on a construction job in Bethsaida.

Little James

Played by Jordan Walker Ross. James planned to join the Jerusalem Temple Choir but his plans changed when he was introduced to Jesus by Thaddeus. There are two men named James in the group so he accepted the classifier of “Little” to differentiate. He has a limp, incorporated into his character from his actor’s real life ailments of scoliosis and minor cerebral palsy. Little James stands back to watch Jesus heal others, but wrestles with whether it would make him ungrateful as a follower to ask for healing too.

Mary Magdalene

Played by Elizabeth Tabish. A runaway, victimized by Roman soldiers, and possessed by demons, she had changed her name to Lillith. After a failed exorcism, she made a suicide attempt but abandoned it at the last moment. When she went to a tavern and asked for strong liquor, Jesus approached her before she could imbibe and called her by her true name. She was delivered from her demons, found employment, and changed her name back to Mary. Her devotion to Jesus was instant from the moment he healed her, but she did not know his name until he came to dinner in her home for Shabbat. From then on in the show, she was one of his followers. In Season 2, she shows symptoms of PTSD from her previous traumas.

Simon Peter

Played by Shahar Isaac. Son of Jonah, brother of Andrew, husband of Eden. A fisherman by trade. Simon was a gambler and he overextended his grace period of paying the taxes he owed to Rome. In desperation he made a deal with the Praetor to turn in the names of other Jewish fishermen whose labors were done in secret and thus tax-free, but Simon felt too guilty to follow through. He was on the verge of going to prison when he met Jesus, who told him to cast his net into the sea one more time. The enormous catch that was hauled in settled the debt with Rome and provided a surplus to pay up in advance of future taxes so that Simon could follow Jesus with no financial obligations to his household.

Andrew

Played by Noah James. Son of Jonah, brother of Simon. A fisherman by trade. Andrew was a follower of John the Baptizer and was present when John identified Jesus as “the lamb of God” on the shore of the Jordan. He was called to follow Jesus after witnessing the miracle of the fish appearing in Simon’s net.

Big James

Played by three actors. Season 1, ep 1-4 by Shayan Sobhian:

Season 1, ep 5-8 by Kian Kavousi:

Season 2 by Abe Martell:

Son of Zebedee, brother of John. A fisherman by trade, his family is one of the merchant class fishing in secret and evading Roman taxes. Simon Peter almost turns him in to the authorities but changes his mind and comes clean to the Zebedee family. They work together to aid Simon in one last effort to pay his overdue taxes and witness the miracle of the fish. Jesus recruits him as a follower immediately after the fish are in the boats. There are two men named James in the group so he accepted the classifier of “Big” to differentiate. In season two, James earns a title with his brother, Sons of Thunder, after they lose their tempers at Samaritans. He aspires to be a warrior when the time is right to overthrow the Romans.

John

Played by George Harrison Xanthis. Son of Zebedee, brother of Big James. A fisherman by trade, his family is one of the merchant class fishing in secret and evading Roman taxes. Thomas

Played by Joey Vahedi. He has a knack for measuring and careful planning, and is skeptical by nature. Thomas is not so subtly in love with his trade partner Ramah; together the two collaborate for a catering business. He met Jesus at the wedding in Cana and saw the miracle of water transformed into wine.

Ramah

Played by Yasmine Al-Bustami. Daughter of Kafni, who owns a vineyard and sells wine. She and Thomas co-venture a catering business between her skills as a vintner with Thomas’s ability to carefully plan. She met Jesus at the wedding in Cana and saw the miracle of water transformed into wine. In season two, she is learning from Mary how to read and write the Hebrew language.

Matthew

Played by Paras Patel. A tax collector, highly skilled in mathematics. Portrayed as autistic in being sensitive to smells and hygiene as well as taking things at their literal meanings, and has trouble sustaining eye-contact and relating to people. He is on particularly good terms with his Roman escort, Gaius, who grudgingly admits respect and concern for Matthew. He quietly observed Jesus on several occasions, witnessing two miracles, before Jesus called to Matthew at the tax collecting booth to follow him.

Philip

Played by Yoshi Barrigas. A cheerful man who keeps the peace in camp and takes Matthew under his wing for lessons in Torah, manual labor, and improving his people skills. He was originally a follower of John the Baptizer and is accustomed to nomadic life, as well as the drama a spiritual leader can elicit. On John’s orders, Philip strolled into Jesus’s camp, knowing the time was right to follow Jesus’s ministry instead of John’s.

Nathanael (Bartholomew)

Played by Austin Reed Alleman. An architect by trade, he had earned a Roman commission on a building project, but the foreman did not put in the extra effort needed for Nathanael’s design to work and the structure collapsed. Nathanael was blamed and his career was ruined. Alone on the open plains, beneath a fig tree, he burned his blueprints and poured the ashes on his head. Philip visited him in town later and told Nathanael to come and meet Jesus, who described Nathanael’s time under the fig tree and answered his feelings of despair with hope. Jesus calls Nathanael “the truth teller” and the other followers recognize Nathanael’s open candor as his defining trait.

Simon the Zealot

Played by Alaa Safi. His older brother Jesse had a paralyzing accident as a child, but he and Simon grew up very close to one another. Resentful of Rome’s occupation, Simon was driven to follow the order of the zealots and left Jesse a note to say goodbye. The note of farewell said that Simon would only believe that the Messiah had come when he saw Jesse walk again. Simon trained with the zealots for years and was finally given a mission of assassinating a Roman official in Jerusalem. With a plan in place for the murder, Simon met his brother again, who waited by the Pool of Bethesda in hope of being healed of paralysis, but they parted at odds once more. That evening, just before Simon moved in for the kill of his target, he saw Jesse, fully healed by Jesus a few minutes earlier, walk past. Simon abandoned his mission, reunited with Jesse in joy, and sought out Jesus to follow him.

Tamar

Played by Amber Shana Williams. A flower vendor by trade, she met Jesus on the road and witnessed him healing a leper. Afterward, she sought Jesus out and brought a paralytic friend with her to receive healing. The crowd was so thick around Jesus that Tamar had to transport her friend to a rooftop and lower him down. She saw her friend healed of paralysis and together they testified in other cities about Jesus’s miracles. When the Pharisees sought her for questioning, Andrew and Philip found her first and invited her back to camp as a way to avoid the Pharisees.

Judas Iscariot

Played by Luke Dimyan. Apprenticed to a businessman, Judas had misgivings about his master’s underhanded methods in the art of the deal and was looking for more out of life than gaining wealth. He aspires to do something meaningful that will be remembered throughout history. When he overheard some of Jesus’s followers poorly trying to negotiate the use of another man’s land for the upcoming sermon on the mount, Judas jumped in with his own skills to help close the deal for them. He turned up to hear the sermon and ended up “backstage” to meet more of Jesus’s followers and see Jesus for himself.

Here's a little chart I use to keep track of the disciples we have so far. It can be hard to remember who's who in The Chosen, especially with similar faces and duplicate names.

Left to right, top to bottom:

Jesus: You know who He is. Played by Jonathan Roumie.

Simon: Andrew's brother, was a fisherman before meeting Jesus. In the Gospels, he is eventually renamed Peter. I like calling him "Simon P". Played by Shahar Isaac.

Andrew: Simon P's brother, was a fisherman and follower of John the Baptist before meeting Jesus. Played by Noah James.

James: John's brother, one of the sons of Thunder, was a fisherman before meeting Jesus. The series calls him "Big James". He was played by Shayan Sobhian and later Kian Kavousi in season 1, but Abe Martell now has the role from season 2 onward so he's the one pictured above.

John: Author of the Book of John, Big James' brother, one of the sons of thunder, was a fisherman before meeting Jesus. Played by George Xanthis.

Philip: Follower of John the Baptist and a friend of Nathaniel before meeting Jesus. Played by Yoshi Barrigas.

Nathaniel: Architect (in series, not in the Bible) and friend of Philip before meeting Jesus. Played by Austin Reed Alleman.

Matthew: Author of the Book of Matthew. Tax collector before meeting Jesus. Played by Paras Patel.

Thomas: Wedding planner (in series, not in the Bible) before meeting Jesus. Played by Joey Vahedi.

James: Singer (in series, not in the Bible) before meeting Jesus. The series calls him "Young/Little James". Played by Jordan Walker Ross.

Simon: Zealot (aka member of the Zealots, a violent anti-Roman political sect) before meeting Jesus. So far the series calls him "Simon son of Zebulun", the fandom likes to call him Simon the Zealot or Simon Z. Played by Alaa Safi.

Thaddeus: Construction worker (in series, not in the Bible) before meeting Jesus. Played by Giavani Cairo.

Judas Iscariot: The disciple who betrayed Jesus. He hasn't been introduced yet (as of s2 e7). Played by ?????
