A bunch of sketches for our current DnD campaign, mostly about my beloved NPC bards
1- Wilhelm, a cute NPC bartender whom I’m romancing. Sweetest man. My ray of sunshine. I’d kill for him both as a player and a character. And our cat, Mr. Whiskey.
2 - The three of bards: Wilhelm, Dorian (former PC, you might remember him from my Barovian post), and Davil Starsong (homebrewed and in a new fancy outfit). They are childhood friends and kinda a found family, and it’s killing me every goddamn time. Also, I got an inspiration point for their boots being so unique and personality-revealing :D
3 - My PC Marcella and disguised Dorian gossip about Wilhelm, because YOUR HONOR HE’S CUTE. Few words about Dorian’s dress: our DM described the classy evening dress with a side cutout and a deep neckline, but I still wanted it to have a Renaissance style, so now he wears this kinda-Renaissance gown with a side cutout and asymmetrical thing-that-is-supposed-to-be-giornea-but-im-not-sure-anymore
4 - we agreed that this cursed emoji represents Marcella quite well, so I did a redraw
5-6 - quick NPC sketch portraits

As I sink in the funeral in Arno thoughts that @maranzalla set off, I realised some of the reasons for my bitching about historical inaccuracies (other than being a neurospicy history student and being Milanese, of course).
One of the main appeals of ACII and Brotherhood, other than a story which is compelling and interesting, is the setting. Early Renaissance is one of my favorite historical periods, for Firenze but for Italy as a whole (the Sforza!!! anyway). And the games takes all these historical figures from these times, all these places and conflicts, and create narrative arcs that ignore the specifics of the setting they chose. The socio-economical context, the religious beliefs, the net of politics. It creates a narrative that is interesting, with narrative moments that are delightful (the hanging of the Auditore is one such moment), but that are delightful in itself, removed from their context, and when placed back in late 1400s, Italian peninsula, make me seethe. The discourse of proper historical research going into media (or simply actually listening to historians) is an old one, which has been recently sparked up again by the Napoleon movie, and talking about which recent games such as Pentiment show that actually studying and portraying the history of your setting isn’t going to make your game boring, rather turn it into something quite wonderful. But that discourse is not really the point of this ramble, which I made just to say why I’ve been bitching and will continue bitching (other than it being my god’s given right as a Milanese).
Anyway, we all deserved to see Ezio in skintight red thighs and a pleated little giornea ending right below his butt and I don’t know why there isn’t more public outrage about this.

🖋️Trovatore...

Vesuvius: Historical Tidbits!
So I just posted Vesuvius, my Italian Renaissance Anderperry oneshot, over on the AO3 - read it here, especially if you haven't read it before seeing this post. It was never meant to be anything more than the vaguest of historical fictions, and is exactly zero percent accurate, but a couple of the places/terms I used had some fun facts behind them, so what I couldn't or didn't want to fit into footnotes goes here!
WARNING: PRETTY MAJOR SPOILERS HERE! IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED, GO READ THE FIC FIRST!
First; names were gotten mainly from the Peiraeus Public Library, the Academy of Saint Gabriel, and a Reddit thread that I can't actually find now.
Also - never actually mentioned in the fic, but Neil's first name is Niccolò! It seemed fitting for his name to be lost to history; it's tragic because the whole thing is a tragedy and ends with the demise of the House of Pisani; it's logical because I can't imagine that Andrea would want his old best friend/erstwhile rival's name to remembered, especially in connection to Todd's death; it's happy because the best thing I could do for Neil was to let him fade quietly out of history and never have to deal with anything like that again for the rest of his life. But I couldn't resist giving him a name that means "people's victor" lol. Dramatic irony ftw
Sidenote: I only chose Tommaso because it sounds like Todd and I was trying to stick pretty close to their canon names, but it does mean "twin", so... whoops! Uh oh! What a thing to name the guy who spends most of his childhood and early adulthood alone and searching for a family! Sorry man!
"Il triumvirato" - probably very obvious, but Italian for "triumvirate".
Speaking of the painting - did you catch the broken cup corresponding to the cup on the de' Rossi coat of arms? Looks like someone's been hungry for power for a couple of years, Andrea! (In my mind he has the portrait commissioned at the height of the "golden years", when he's drunk on power and Todd and Neil have not yet abandoned his cause.)
Last note on the paintings is on the clothing; the cloak is a mantello, the undershirt a camicia, the doublet a farsetto and the tabard a giornea, and the hose calze. I didn't do much (any) research on the colours/materials, so that will likely be anachronistic. Andrea's outfit looks a little like this:
Neil's like this (on the right):
And Todd is in cardinal's robes! More on that in one or two bullet points.
I only mention One Thousand and One Nights in the footnotes but actually all of the stories our narrator mentions are anachronistic - Maestro Lattantio and Costatino Fortunato (an early version of Puss in Boots!) were both first published in The Facetious Nights of Straparola by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, circa. 1550-1553
Actually, quick note to confirm the dates; Todd first becomes a cardinal in 1479, and the conversation witnessed by our narrator happens around 1484.
Todd IS quite young to become a cardinal (think mid to late-20s), but that makes more sense in the full AU ;)
As said in the footnotes, the Palazzo is based on the Palazzo Reale/del Broletto Vecchio. Check it out!
(Yeah, narrator, go ahead. Try hiding in THIS one.)
Cardinals have red robes! And of course once I realised this the blood comparisons were endless and overwhelming. Like, come on:
WHAT a red. Thank you, Jeremy Irons in The Borgias.
And this is a galero, the red hat of the cardinals:
Wide brim for obscuring the face while telling secrets.
The Pazzis briefly alluded to are the Pazzis of the Pazzi conspiracy, which has been taking up just absolute miles of my brain space since I started reading about it. Like holy shit. What was going on there
Cardinals are valuable to have at the time; mostly covered in the text, but they're ways to have your family's fingers in all the political pies. (Popes are of course better, but cardinals more attainable.) But then again, now your son owes his first alliance to Rome. Uh oh!
The Castel Sant'Angelo is this huge imposing museum in Rome that has been by turns a fortress, mausoleum, and a prison:
The Bible verse is from Luke 2:9 - the birth of Jesus. Fun fact; the image of Todd as a soft-spoken, mild young cardinal, believed to be harmless and gentle by everyone around him, absolutely glowing with a kind of divine rage was the thing that first kickstarted this oneshot!
The Duomo di Milano:
Hell of a place to die in the arms of your lover (+ in front of the man who's always loved you, but loved power more). (Sidenote: in the full AU (which lives only in my mind) I have SO MANY SO MANY thoughts about Andrea/Todd/Neil as a triumvirate and SO MANY SO MANY thoughts about how they interact and what turns all of their stories into tragedies. So if anybody wants to ask me about them.........)
Feast day of St. Matthias: May 14th. St. Matthias replaced Judas as the twelfth apostle (there's a certain betrayal echoed here between the triumvirate that makes me go crazyinsane) and is the patron saint of carpenters, tailors, smallpox sufferers, and in prayers for perseverance and hope.
The crypt of the Duomo di Milano, where Todd is buried:
And... that's it! I think! Thanks for reading!
-
Edit 25/10/23 - just a minor thing that doesn't really impact the fic at all, but I do think that Todd's death also plays a part in the complete destroyal of the de' Rossis - not because of Andrea's wrath but because of the Pope's. Like, he's not an important cardinal or even a very well-respected one, but he is still a prince of the Church! And killing him would definitely provoke some papal blowback. Just been reading about the Cardial di San Giorgio after the Pazzis, and the Pope sending messengers to get him, and when that was denied essentially declaring war on Lorenzo de' Medici (although of course that wasn't all on the Cardinal's account). Like you know. Family is family. (He was TWENTY-SEVEN when it all went down, what the fuck!)

Doll of the Day: Faraway Forest Fairy Kingdom Wedding Giftset
On April 30th Mattel released the last dolls in it’s very nice Faraway Forest Collection. They are a bride and groom on a wedding themed giftset. IDK if you guys follow the Faraway Forest Collection, but IMO it’s one of the nicest things Mattel has produced in recent years. All photos in this post are by Mattel. All Rights Reserved.
From Left To Right: Lady Of The White Woods (2015), King of the Crystal Cave (2017) The Wedding Giftset (2018), Queen of the Dark Forest (2015), Water Sprite (2016) and Elf (2014). The whole collection is very beautiful, with marked exceptions - giving Water Sprite’s iridescent plastic skirt the side-eye as I write - and I’d gladly have almost all of them. As it is, I own Lady of the White Woods, King of the Crystal Cave and now the Wedding Giftset.
Wedding giftsets are nothing new to Mattel, and I’m bored out of my wits by them selling the idea that a wedding is the highest point in a woman’s life through their dolls. Non-binary that I am, I also wish for a non-binary wedding couple as well. C’mon, these dolls are directed to the adult collectors, and I’m pretty sure we’re all big enough to handle the fact that the world is a diverse place. Still, with all my pet peeves, I like the dolls and I’m really sorry to see this collection end.
On to the couple itself. I really like the fabric on their matching outfits, and since matching couples is a period thing, I really like it. Her outer dress is also a bit reminiscent of a Giornea, a Italian Renaissance style which I love to bits. The big golden bough is blown out of proportion IMO. It would be prettier if it was a bit smaller.
See what I mean? Still, it’s not ugly per se. Her sheer chemise is probably attached to the upper gown, which is a pity, but that’s usually the way Mattel does these dresses.
Her make up is ok. The blue shadow bothers me a bit, but I’ve seen much much worse from Mattel and other doll companies. I love her fiery hair and her crown is gorgeous!
Her groom is very nice! He’s wearing a mix of a male Houppelande and a Courtepy. But it’s a Fantasy doll, so everything is possible.
The trim down the front of the tunic is not too shabby. The velvet undersleeves are nice. Some lining on the outer-sleeves would have made the tunic look so much better. His belt is very nice and the buckle is downright gorgeous!
His boots though... They are well into “The Realm of WTFery” (TM). Why-the- fake-dirt-oh-Valar-why... I can’t even... Agh.
His crown is very nice too, and his shoulder piece is cool. It’s a pity he doesn’t come with a floor-sweeping cape like King of the Crystal Cave. But still, he is no doubt a very nice doll. For now that’s all I have to say. I promise another Doll of the Day about them with real life photos as soon as they arrive!
