The wonderful Glass Octopus. Living at depths of around 3000 ft and only being about a foot long, these strange little creatures are rarely seen by scientists.
The Sea Creature of the Day is the Glass Octopus!! (Vitreledonella richardi)
god i... whenever i see footage of these guys im just speechless. their transparency is so beautiful it's insane. compared to most sea creatures, im actually not very knowledgeable about octopi so this isn't one i can give a fun fact about without worrying about me being incorrect, but like, man... so pretty... 🥰🥰🥰
The ultra rare glass octopus, she’s a translucent luminescent queen 👑
The glass octopus Vitreledonella richardi is a very rarely seen cephalopod found in tropical and subtropical waters. These octopuses mostly live in the aphotic zone, deep sea waters where sunlight doesn’t penetrate, at around 3,000 feet.
They can grow to about 1.5 feet long and are estimated to live about 2-5 years. Named for their see through bodies, that allow you to view their digestive tract/make chromatophores stand out.
Footage from a 2021 expedition led by Schmidt Ocean Institute
"Actual footage and Rare Sighting of a Glass Octopus Reveals its Nearly Transparent Membrane in Extraordinary Detail
On a 34-day expedition around the Phoenix Islands Archipelago, marine scientists from the Schmidt Ocean Institute captured exceptionally rare footage of the elusive glass octopus. With a speckled, iridescent membrane, the aquatic animal is almost entirely transparent—only its optic nerve, eyes, and digestive tract are visible to humans—and sightings like these are so infrequent that scientists previously resorted to studying the species only after pulling it from the stomachs of its predators."
The final collection of all my “space objects as sea creatures” paintings! This is mainly what I’ve been working on the past few weeks so that’s why art’s been so slow :3
