I just wanted to say I love what you’re doing omg… apologies if im totally missing the point by the way, I have only read some of ur responses to other asks and I’m not well read at all in the philosophy you talk about. Still I feel really seen by your posts or more accurately your posts feel exactly like my state of mind before committing to transitioning…. The repetitive and often kind of fleeting quality of the images you use reminds me of the obsessiveness I used to have over my (purposely unattainable) wishes of what I could be, the sort of wishes that don’t expect to be fulfilled unless pushed to the forefront by someone else, which the forcemasc does…. The captions are so raw and definitive that they feel half like someone else talking to me and half like my own repressed consciousness speaking what it can’t respectably say through someone else. most of the men being guys who I absolutely will not look like (I’m Asian and really short) adds to this because ur posts feel like the expression of an ideal fantasy, with all the caveats and problematic implications of creating an ideal fantasy of what being a man is based on your half-formed understanding of manhood through tv and the movies and whatnot… it rlly feels like trying to formulate an idea of what being a man would be like, without understanding or rlly comprehending the realities of life as the sort of man you will be. And in this way it’s like being on the precipice of taking the steps to actually realize the person you want to be, which you have some image of, but you really don’t know… the thing about transition (ime anyways) is that it highlights how who you are and who you want and what you value are all more intertwined and codeterminate than ppl think. How it is burdened with uniquely specific assumptions about motivations for transition and rampant intracommunity fetishization. I try not to let it overwhelm me. Biting my tongue for now, but I have a lot to say about this. It's part of why I am painfully careful about whose photos I use, and with what text.

I'm relieved that you are able to pick out the intentional shortcomings of this project. The images show us fantasies of masculinity, and the captions do represent (to some degree) the frustration and neediness that comes from wanting to attain those ideals. They're that "repressed consciousness speaking what it can't respectably say", and I am that "someone else" for you, the viewer. What inspired you to start writing fanfiction?

it was i think my 3rd month of being a stay? and I really loved reading ff on here even tho I had no idea how this app worked LMAO I've already told her but @rachalixie's hurt/comfort drabbles were my fav thing to read, she was one the first ppl I followed on here, and so, tmi, I was feeling so anxious and I wrote a channie helping u through an anxiety attack drabble (that I never posted AJSNJSB) and I was like hold on! this is fun! i can write what I want??? and post it for people to read...... like I was already writing some poems for a couple of years now but they were just for me yk, so i got super ambitious and i posted a long ass OT8 saying ily for the first time as my first fic akssjnjb i was so nervous like actually shaking and refreshing the notif bar every two seconds, i still rem the very first two comments i got, i think that's when it hit me that people actually READ stuff I wrote.

im gonna respond to criticisms about adventure time that i saw in a twitter thread bc im bored and have feelings and thoughts

the most frequent reply to the thread was that people believe finn’s breakup with flame princess was stupid and, at worst, was an attempt by the female writers to make the male protagonist Finn as dislikeable as possible.

i don’t think i’ve ever met a single fan of adventure time who thinks “yeah that finn the human guy? he sucks. totally dislikeable protagonist.” i have to believe these people simply watched up to this episode and then quit the show. they didn’t see any of the followup. they didn’t watch finn grow up. they didn’t see the episode where finn acknowledges specifically what he did wrong and makes amends with flame princess. i just simply do not understand this criticism.

WHAT SHOW ARE U WATCHING? GO WATCH THE SHOW CALLED “ADVENTURE TIME” AVAILABLE ON MAX AND HULU

ppl won’t shut the fuck up about rebecca sugar even when she’s NOT a show runner

moving onto princess bubblegum. now call me crazy but i’ve always liked princess bubblegum as a character. i also understand where a lot of this criticism comes from and im able to qualify that my affinity towards her character comes with a fair bit of nuance as well as coming from a place of bias via naivete

the idea that the show turns a blind eye to her abuses is absurd to me. the show explicitly shows her hurting characters that we care about, and it in no way is framed as good. it acknowledges her flaws, which is why we the audience are aware of them. and in-universe I think she is quite literally called out by almost every major character lmao does the show punish her enough? well that’s like, an interesting question to ask and a fun way to think about the show and her character. what does princess bubblegum deserve? well we know she got usurped and exiled for some time. that gave her some time to reflect a bit.

now you don’t necessarily have to think of that as a redemption arc. at the very least the show took the opportunity to show us other facets of her character. she can be vulnerable, she can be kind, she can feel remorseful. and she does, like, improve in my opinion. in “The Thin Yellow Line” princess bubblegum has a whole speech condemning her idolization, saying she’s “just a person, like all of you” it’s quite wholesome. It’s further reinforced in “High Strangeness” when she apologizes to tree trunks for trying to colonize space and inadvertently infecting her alien children with candy goo (lmao i know it sounds ridiculous but watch the episode lol) obviously i’m not gonna sit here and be like “princess bubblegum is great and was  completely redeemed and a morally exemplary paragon to be revered by all” but like, come on twitter. you’re not at all convincing me here

now im gonna talk about his one!! the animation!! i have a lot of ways i like to think about how the style/animation/tone/format of this show changes over time. the central pillar of these is exactly in line with the shows most prominent theme: growing up. finn ages from 12 to 17 and a lot of what the show explores is the transition from “boyhood” to “manhood” and how it’s messy, nonlinear, painful, joyful, and rich with new experiences. i think the stylistic changes, even if they can also be explained by ward stepping down as showrunner, also reinforce this theme fantastically. if we’re seeing the world through finn’s eyes, of course in his early years things are much more colorful, fantastical, and whimsical. and as he ages, we see the world more clearly, things seem more grounded, more mature.  that’s why i can’t really take any criticism in line with this seriously because it’s just too well done it works too dang well.  and don’t get me started on how this theme extends to all the other characters. i could literally go on but i’ve already made my point hehe.

do u have advice for ppl new to WoW? do u think they should play classic or the latest version?

that's a toughie! classic and retail (the latest version/modern WoW) both have their perks and drawbacks, but I would lean toward retail just because more people are able to help you there.

classic is a fantastic but very time-consuming introduction to WoW. it's (arguably) at the peak of the warcraft storyline: the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. it continues the story from the RTS games, so it has a rock solid foundation and design. it also has linear progression: you start in the base world, level to 60, then move to the next world/expansion (up to level 70), and then to the newest world (up to 80, the current maximum). retail is not like this; more on that later.

what i also like about classic is that it's largely self-facilitated and rugged, although that is a double-edged sword: classic is more immersive because you are required to actually explore, read read read, and use reasoning to complete quests in old school RPG fashion. in retail, most quests tell you directly where to go and mark the location on your map. it's more efficient, but loses that sense of grand wonder that many first fell in love with.

that being said, most of the people currently playing classic are hardened veterans who have been traversing these same worlds for over 15 years. while vanilla/classic presents the most novel experience, it's not actually the most palatable for brand new players. a lot of the content is also impossible to do alone by design, so unless you join with friends it may be a steep learning/socializing curve.

retail, or modern WoW, is more user-friendly, has many "quality of life" improvements, and has a wider array of players, but the sheer glut of content and the way it is all jerry-rigged together can be overwhelming. efforts have been made to streamline content for new players, like Newcomer chat, Exile's Reach (a tutorial zone), Chromie Time, and a UI and skill tree overhaul. but the world is MASSIVE compared to classic, with multiple continents, planets, and even universes to explore. all of this emerged over the course of the last 15+ years and throughout nine expansion packs, but it's a lot to absorb all at once.

as it exists currently, a player can haphazardly bounce around between continents and storylines, which is fine if you know what you're doing but disorienting if you're brand new to the game. Chromie Time/"timewalking" is a game mechanic that was introduced to mitigate this: Chromie will let you play through an expansion's storyline in a linear way up to level 50, then transition you to the newest expansion for the last 10 levels. currently the maximum level is 60, not 80 like in classic. in Dragonflight, the newest expansion, you can quest up to level 70, the new maximum.

some caveats: the base world in classic no longer exists in retail, as it was revamped during an expansion called Cataclysm; WoW Classic partially exists as a way to preserve it. despite being pictured first in Chromie Time, Cataclysm's story takes place after The Burning Crusade ("Portal to Outland") and Wrath ("Fall of") of the Lich King. below shows the progression of WoW from left to right, starting with the base ("vanilla"/classic) game:

you can still go and play through any of these storylines and freely switch between them in Chromie Time, so you can emulate the progression in classic—up to level 50. after level 50 you can still go back and play through these storylines on your own, but you will not get the same experience points for doing so.

1. food. i looooove a sweet lil treat as a pick me up. i am not immune to treating myself for the smallest things. my go to is an iced capp.

2. napping. the most beautiful and amazing thing rn. like just lazing around in the sunny spot on my floor w a pillow. that hits the spot.

3. my family. rn my mom and dad have been sending pics of their trip and im so happy they remember things i like to take pics of. like they'll see a weird flower or cats lounging places and stop everyone else to take a pic bc "ray needs to see this!"

4. here's a new one! i love when ppl bounce their ideas off on me. like you, k, or karo and em coming to me like "i have an idea!" and yall just gotta imagine me looking like this every single time u do.

5. transit. i love public transportation and people watching while i have my headphones w music on. especially w my class times it's relatively empty now so i get to people watch w out any real disturbances

aid’s lil mini criticism of ToF that’s probably a lil disjointed cause I suck at explaining my thoughts sometimes ( at least from the viewpoint of someone who is a game designer and took a bachelors for it )

obvs this is all subjective, what i feel abt a mechanic or element is not the same as anothers, and this isn’t to disincentivize ppl from playing it; if u like the game, that’s the important part!!! 2 hours is not enough for me to get extremely solid in my final thoughts, but the fact that i still feel unsure how to feel, even after 2 hours is a little ... meh in itself

most games usually hook you in the first 20-30 min, but ToF feels like one long-drawn-out tutorial where even after 2h i still feel like i’m waiting to be introduced to stuff as i go along the story as i’ve been playing, and yet i’m equally being shoved too many mechanics in my face

obvs, i’ll be making comparisons to genshin bc they themselves dubbed themselves the ‘genshin killers’ ( i can’t find the immediate source, but it’s been brought up so many times + they even copied 5-star genshin reviews w/bots on their app lmao.... ) so it is an invitation for drawing comparisons

intro didn’t wow me. didn’t leave me with the same wide-eyed wonder i had when i booted up genshin cause you just get shoved into some ‘omg you’re being chased by a thing get away xD lol random look at all these things going on u don’t know about’ with no real sense of actual urgency to get away ( and a weird QTE section that felt very out of place ) ... like it’s pretty, but it’s not a ‘wow’ chief ( also fuck amnesia as a trope LMAO )

so initial impressions were subpar, combat feels fine, it feels fluid enough to fight on land, air, and to transition between weapons which i think is quite a neat mechanic in place of having different characters, although it’s not a new one, it’s pretty tried and liked. it feels a little clunky in some places ( i was laughing when i tried to dive attack and the character just kept floating forward and slowly falling ) but otherwise it’s serviceable enough 

( things are dying way too quick with an SSR weapon though ... there’s no challenge and i don’t even feel like a beginner player who is given small things to help me adjust and learn the combat unlike in genshin which did feel like at least a gradual rise in challenge and power )

they at least make you actually use all the new combat mechanics you’re introduced to ( including their jetpack and ... a crapload of other ‘extra’ accessories later on ). problem is, that it feels like the combat and navigation mechanics are ... bloated and way too condensed yet drawn out at the same time? nothing rlly stuck with me

things like weapon upgrades are streamlined since the game just does it for you ( aka oh hey we just attached the materials you need to upgrade so don’t think about it ) which then forms a disconnect between you and the mechanic ( and even where said mechanic is located in the UI ) ... sure, weapon upgrades are automated through the ores in genshin, but in the beginning you don’t have those and your choice of how you feed weapons is a lot more limited until you become more accustomed to the game. here it’s so ‘wham bam thank u mam’ that it doesn’t even feel fulfilling or do much outside of press button do thing

story-wise you aren’t even given enough chances to really become familiar with the combat system because 80% of the story so far has been ‘go here. talk to this person here. come back. go here. talk to this person here’ and maybe you beat up a single boss or two in some places. you’d have to straight up deviate from the story to start beating stuff, and truth be told, i don’t have any incentive or desire to do so, unlike in genshin where i began early on to deviate and look around because i was inspired to dig my nose around the world

... i’ll be honest, i think the story is boring and bland too. it feels very hamfisted in introducing you to characters and trying to make you care for them. no, PW i’m not gonna care that your token uwu sister girl character is dying or something, i barely have known her for 2 hours and outside of her showing me around the camp and making me go on 50 errands to get her stuff ( like a damn filter that’s 5 feet away from me ), she’s done nothing for me. her brother was hot, but he also feels flatter than a piece of paper and i’d have cared more if he actually did shoot his sister. otherwise i have no idea what our place in the world is outside of amnesiac dude who is adopted by a camp while shit happens around him w/o any real explanation

the look of the world is ... fine, it’s ... generic post-apocalypse camp ... i dunno why they opted for the look they did, browns and greens although very nice, start to blend together when your world is just made of that and just canyon mountain things. facial animations are pretty good for characters, even if the lip-sync is weird ( but genshin isn’t free of that either with non-CN dubs so it’s a pass ) but actual body/motion animations feel weird and are very ... stiff

designs are ... bland too IMO, i’m not very inspired by them and i find the mechanic a little odd to be able to ‘wear’ a look ... why give us the option to customize then if we can just dress up like a cat-girl who acts bitchy regardless if we opted for male or female avatars? the customizer is nice, but perfect world has always made pretty decent customizers. though think about it, if people are more complimenting just the customizer and nothing else of the game ... what does that say? sure, you can argue it only came out yesterday, but ... food for thought, i suppose

this life isn’t easy, but i’m alive and i have more hope than i did a year ago. tbh this year is off to a tough start but i’m stronger than ever and getting stronger every day. i know i have what it takes to keep going because i’ve already made it this far !!

last year i came out to all of the people who are actively in my life and i was met with so much more support than i was expecting 🥹 i reconnected with some old friends who have also come out as trans and have sweet budding friendships there that are only going to keep growing 💞 i started laser treatments for my face and the change has already been so affirming, i only have a few more treatments until most of my face will be done ✨

this year i am focusing on stability, in my finances and my mental health - the buzzword is care 🕊 im going to learn more about skin care and makeup as a way to love myself and also as a way to play 🦋 i want to find a voice coach that is trans and also is a singer, because singing is so special and important to me, and i have been putting off working on my voice through my transition up to this point ❤️‍🩹 i’m going to take better care of my body by trying to do yoga more consistently and im going to take some dance classes 🩰 i’m going to start saving for FFS and try to set up a few consultations !!

for the first time in a while i’m looking forward to this year 🥰 i hope u are too 💖

Oh man, I watched TOS Star Trek with my dad as a kid when one particular channel was doing a full run of them, one episode a week (getting a full run of episodes, at regular times, in order! was very unusual for my country so we took advantage) and while they’re SO cool and also cheesy as hell in some places, please be prepared for transition scenes that take like 5 minutes, which doesn’t sound like a lot but when you’re sitting there watching the camera flick from Spock, to the ship, to Spock, to the ship, to Spock, to the ship over and over and over you realise how fast paced modern movies/shows have become. Anyways, that’s my main warning, go forth and have fun cause it’s excellent

i definitely feel u on the whole pacing thing, i was big on doctor who back in the day and when i went back to watch a little classic, it was wild the difference in pacing. i'm an impatient adhd fuck so it helped for me to be doing stuff instead of doing my full undivided attention watches i tend to do, and if/when i get around to some star trek i'll probably implement that a lil bit.

and if the fact i mentioned watching doctor who doesn't signal that i can handle some cheese, well. yeha i can handle some cheesiness lol

also i've seen all 3(?) of the recent films and had fun with them, so i'm not worried about the shit ppl give them, i know the way fanbases can be.

the spock and kirk of it all, data, and general trek stuff i've seen on here make it seem up my alley, it's just the time commitment is intimidating, ya feel? let alone the way i struggle to start new things when i'm still hyperfixating hard on something.

I'm gonne quickly rant about how i fucking hate how so many modern metal musicians have made metal music worse. So if you're new to metal and wanna try someth new, wanna give it a chance, you might end up on "songs" that are glitch-like, with a lot of high-pitched up sharp noises. That's what im refering to. Now, before you say some retarded shit like "let ppl enjoy music", lemme explain, there is a limit to the bullshit you can make ppl go through. Here are some songs that use that sound properly, don't overuse it, and use it in a musically smart way:

I love this band, they used to be Drown in Sulfur, but they disbanded. Some of them are here now. In the intro you hear the guitar doing some wacky shit but it's still enjoyable because it has a FUCKING STRUCTURE. Then the deathcore choir hits, the song really starts, as you hear what becomes the main rythm ABOVE the guitar and singing. It's a glorious mix.

Okay so this one is fucking insane, but it's 6 minutes of CONTROLLED INSANITY. There are no choruses or verses, it's a set of different sections put together magnificently. The sharp sounds aren't just put there for the lolz of it, as you listen to the song it feels right, because it is placed right. It's there and it's amazing.

Now this one is just str8up fucked up. I can't believe this "entire band" is just one guy. It's not even about sharp sounds here, it's about the most musically organised mess I've ever heard. An absolute orchestra of suffering. A mayhem of ideas solidified into one agonising piece of terror. But if one thing, one remark always comes in the comment sections of his yt videos (including a metal voice coach), is that this cacophony makes sense. Somehow it really does.

Bands like Emmure, Erra or Veil of Maya just scream and beat the fuck out of their instruments with zero structure and you feel it right away. You press play and the record starts to breakdance, someth feels off and awfully wrong.

Upon listening to God the Animal, -while- there is a lot of screaming and so u'd think u could use that as a counterargument for what i said so far, here's the thing: at around 2minutes40 seconds, there is what is probably the greatest sequence in modern metal, a fabulous experience that offers a great contrast between demented screams and very clear, distinct vocals, and it goes as such:

"An immortal being

Of ichor and hunger

Violently aching, in never-ending horror

I shall spread my suffering to the gates of Eden"

Between those fuckign BARS and after, you get actual screams and the momentum is unparalleled.

-> the point is: the limit i was talking about was precisely this: a song can be heavy without sounding like a diarrhea, a heavy song can be heavy with clean vocals and sharp sounds placed right, as the musicians recognize that those little gimmicks can be both creative, unique AND serve as instrumental factors such as ostinatos, transitions and so on and so forth. Using all of the above without order or structure leads to a SHITSTORM. Not someth "heavy".

about 4th gen they really are getting younger and younger. every time i see their ages i audibly gasp, they’re younger than my sister (she’s 03). i personally think they shouldn’t be debuting any younger than 19 but i’m considered ancient to kpop stans so who am i to have an opinion lol but i keep thinking of all the discourse over shohei, the new sm rookie and ppl complaining about him being 96 line. personally I AM ALL for him debuting!

When you bring up the idea his face lights up instantly it’s the cutest thing omg

I can see him bringing his own supplies to help with getting started

Envelopes, letter paper, markers. Hell, he’ll show up with glitter markers (those things are god-tier istg-)

he gets super flustered and red when you compliment his card

If you mess up on your card he’s totally gonna be there to cheer you up!!

Overall, he’s probably the best person if you wanna use this as a healing opportunity tbh, the entire day is just filled with the calmest atmosphere one could wish for, and the smiles never leave your faces, even after you’ve finished
