It's not too much, don't worry! Honestly I'm having the same problem so I don't know how much help I can give you, but I'll try my best. I would try out some names and see how much each one fits, whether it's with name checks or if you can have irl friends use them. And remember you can always change your mind if what you choose doesn't work out. Make sure it's one that fits you, not just something that sounds cool—I sometimes get that mixed up. For explaining to friends, first make sure they're okay to come out to if you haven't already. Then it really depends, but I think you should try casually bringing up the idea of changing your name, like "I was maybe thinking of going by a different name." Then you can go into asking them to call you by your chosen name if the conversation goes that way. You could do that individually or with a group depending on your relationship with your friends. Ultimately your decision is best since you know the situation better but hopefully I gave some good advice.
