In a (shamelessly-clout-chasing) sequel to my James Bond novels post, here’s a list of the things you will encounter in Goncharov by Thomas Rodriguez, the 1971 novel which was adapted into Goncharov (1973).
There’s a weird scene where Andrey and Katya share a kiss, and when Goncharov catches them, he seems weirdly unbothered, later commenting to Andrey that they can both “share” Katya.
One (1) actual gay character in the form of a minor character of Goncharov’s gang who has an ongoing relationship with a man he met in prison.
A scene where Andrey is forced to strip naked in front of a group of soldiers
“At the heart of it, God is like a frog.”
A lot of weird flashbacks to the Gulag, which simultaneously depict a kind of red-scare one-dimensional fear of the USSR and a weird disrespect for the actual victims of the USSR.
A lot more cannibalism than I was expecting. Kinda glad they cut that for the movie!
Andrey dies really early in the book due to an infection after being bitten by a crow.
Extremely, excessively detailed descriptions of every character’s feet and their footwear. At one point we get a full-page-long description of Katya’s heels.
Katya is from an Uzbek background and is apparently visibly non-white
Before Ice Pick Joe kills Sasha, they have a multiple-pages-long discussion about Crime and Punishment, the novel.
Lengthy discussion about the difficulties of importing foreign shoes into the USSR
After Andrey dies, Goncharov falls ill and hallucinates that he’s Trotsky for several pages.

Just a few of my favorite quotes from Goncharov (1973) that I think need more love and appreciation:
"If I could stop time but still feel your heart beating, then time would stand still forever."
"What's your poison?" "Whatever you're having, darling." (Aka that line in THEE cocktail scene)
"I'll stay with you tonight, if you'll have me." "I wouldn't have anyone else."
"When we got married, I drew this line between us and the world. You've crossed that line, and I can't go with you. You and I are, I think, finally out of time."
"Broken mirrors are bad luck, you know. That clock is silver-backed glass, and you can see yourself in its face. Is that not a mirror?" "If I were cursed, Sofia, then I would never have found you." "You could still lose me." "Never."
"Time is like blood, and I have spilled both."

Goncharov arriving in naples and meeting andrey and immediately recognizing him from his time on the streets of Moscow,,, but he’s changed so much over the years that Andrey doesn’t realize who he is until it’s too late and he’s burned all his bridges… it makes me a little insane I’m sorry

Love how Al Pacino is literally billed as a main character but we’re all so distracted by Goncharey and Katya that we literally don’t even acknowledge Ambrosini’s relevance except in context of his relationship to Ice Pick Joe
