No, no, NO! You don’t understand! If they were going to make a movie called “Goncharov” it would have to be a modern REBOOT of the 1973 film. Then everyone would have the right to consume the media while simultaneously complaining about how “it isn’t as good as the original” or “I can’t BELIEVE that they left out the iconic part XYZ”. We get to watch the film and preserve the original. Everyone wins.

Okay but can we talk about how Goncharov, a movie that came out in 1973, with a plot set in an ALTERNATE HISTORY TIMELINE, does a way better job at portraying Estern European characters, culture, and political climate than Marvel does with the whole Sokovia bullshit????

Goncharov: Sorry it took me so long to bail you out of jail
Ice Pick Joe: No it’s my fault, I shouldn’t’ve used my one phone call to prank call the police

who needs good grades when you can spend every waking moment trying to piece together a timeline for a movie that doesn't exist based on the handful of crumbs of collectively hallucinated agreed-upon lore found on tumblr dot com

Since the recent talks surrounding a remake have been going around, I thought it might be fun to do a fan cast, so here is my Modern™ fan cast for Goncharov (2024):
Goncharov: Michael Fassabender
Im not saying he could ever replace Robert De Niro, because truly Goncharov is one of his best roles and he played it so extremely well, but visually Fassabender feels right - plus we've seen him play tortured and lovelorn and morally ambiguous so i think he'd be a good recast.
Andrey Daddano - Oscar Isaac
I dont know, it just feels right- and again, while Harvey Keitel did amazing... just imagine this man in an eyepatch
Katya Michailova - Amy Adams
Who better to play such a complex feminine character than multi-award winner Amy Adams, I feel like she could really provide an incredible take on the character of Katya.
Mario Ambrosini - Keanu Reeves
No one could ever out do Pacino in this role, no one at all but someone I think could at least try is Keanu.
Sophia - Rachel Weisz
now she might be leaning a bit old for the role but i just feel she would give this character its due and she would do it well.
And finally everybody's favorite...
"Ice Pick" Joe - Brett Gelman
I don't know why, but I feel like Gelman could really match the energy we received from John Cazale's performance.

HUGE Goncharov Controversy!
Goncharov (1973) was originally shopped by Stanley Kubrick to Warner Brothers studios three years before Martin Scorsese started filming. Kubrick’s estate is now planning legal action. (My dad knows a guy who is on the legal team.)

Y'all aren't going to fucking believe what I found
I was talking with my dad, who's a huge Scorsese nerd, about the resurgence of Goncharov and you're not going to believe what this man pulls off his bookshelf. Apparently, Goncharov was based on this obscure pulp novel that came out in 1970 and as far as I can tell there's never been an official English translation. It's a pretty short book so I sped-read it in like a night and I fucking loved it, so I figured I'd translate it for y'all here! I'm hoping I can translate the whole book because some of the changes made in the film are wild.

I haven’t seen many people talk about how influential Goncharov (1973) has been on cinema. You can see how this film inspired others like Bound (and even fucking Shark Tale, but for the purpose of this post I’ll be focusing on Bound)- a mafia story with queer themes and a gruesome torture scene, where the collision of these two drives the conflict. I almost think of Bound as an AU set in America where Katya and Sofia are the protagonists. In any case, I want to give credit to Bound as it’s own film and not some lazy rehash of Goncharov. They’re both different but so similar at the same time and I love it all so much-
