im getting the sense that im an outlier but i just saw someone equate gonjiam haunted asylum to lake mungo and noroi the curse and whuf yikes i just dont agree lmao gonjiam was a comfortable mid at best. if theres a cultural aspect im missing like the zak bagans analogue in grave encounters i get it not hitting with me as hard but boy oh boy gonjiam offered a couple interesting character moments but noooooo where NEAR lake mungo and noroi. crazy talk.

i think people should watch Bad Films from other countries if they can and not just the good ones. gain perspective on whats above the average vs just 'language and cultural barrier heightens sense of disbelief'. sit down and watch the ao oni film. both ao oni films. lmao

Haunted asylums in horror carry a lot of baggage, but I liked the backstory in Gonjiam- the protagonists never learn anything for sure, but the implication from the stories they discuss is that it was actually a detention center for political prisoners to be tortured in (disguised as an asylum), and they were ultimately murdered by the woman in charge. That'll definitely leave angry ghosts!
