Work is bad for art. I think I am able to make art because I'm unemployed, because in my 20s I wasn't motivated by money either out of interest or necessity. Parents who are comfortable, state that funds welfare. I was interested just in crushes, love, meeting people, adolescent angst. I was into art even tho I didn't make it cause I was going to shows, trying to know people who I though made good or interesting art. But I think art should be about impulse, inspiration, feeling, And I do think those things are crushed or numbed in people who work too much. Including people who turn their art into work. Go to the studio everyday, stay for hours and hours. I do t think you can make good art if the art isn't a response to something unexpected, natural. I think there's another type of overworked in Melbourne painting at the moment that isn't the method applied to the canvas it is spiritual overwork in the artist. Effect of recent reimagining of ambition. I think a lot of art in general actually not just painting feels strained drawn out and forced. Especially the stuff at honours gradshow. Everything there felt like the artist had made a perfect expression of something they had seen before. Sort of thing of top marks, highly sophisticated, detailed. But none of it was really about anything, human at all, had any point to make or thing to say. One or two gave me sense of beauty, lightness of touch. Everything 3lse felt like honour role, top of the class, 99 atar, straight As. And for what?

LIGHTS ARE ON BUT NOBODY’S HOME

Alternate Exhibition text for Layo's gradshow, Jun 2024

1 In a dimly lit gallery, Layo sits. The set is mostly unfurnished, except for Layo's chair and several artworks. At stage right are two large frames leaning against the wall. Draped over one is a blank canvas, and the other has canvas wrapped around its stretcher bars. To stage left are two easels wrapped with translucent wax paper, either hung up or leaning against a wall. Both are collaged with cardboard and A4 printer paper, some scrawled with names. The room feels unfinished and incomplete, but not rushed or hurried.

2 A single spotlight turns on, swallowing the outskirts of the set in contrasting darkness, and revealing an anaemic expression on Layo’s face. Layo comes to and looks around at his exhibition; his mind wanders through memory lane as he stands up and paces through the installation, remembering and then forgetting things he wanted to say, reciting old words that have long outlived their context, only a glimmer of their previous lustre maintained through the phenomena of their utterance. Running lines, but the script is all wrong. Silence becomes him.

3 The magic of theatre, when done right, is the suspension of disbelief. The set, the stage and the actor reveal their artifice openly and foster a trusting rapport with the audience. This rapport makes possible the ‘play’, the enchantment that allows fiction to question reality without challenging the audience’s grasp on it. The disarming ambience of theatre is the dreamlike state Layo achieves through an ineffable spatial sensibility. Layo assembles quasi-ironic sculptures and canvases that gesture at being artworks without truly achieving that status. The set he builds is vacant of content but enriched with intent; ‘vacant’ in the sense that the works don’t seem to speak beyond their materiality, ‘enriched’ in the sense that they converge to transcend their materiality and establish a mood. Unlike a new-materialist, who uses the unadorned form to bolster the subjectivity of the object they are presenting, Layo diminishes the identity of his objects. The forms of his pieces are somewhat perfunctory - more about generating an ambience than revealing something inherent to their material, like repeating a name over and over until it just becomes a sound, more for the purpose of ritual than for trivial deconstruction.

4 The draft serves as his final form. His assemblages are quick and rough. He crudely obscures surfaces that have nothing on them to reveal. waxing and waning, stuck between deflection and reflection. Nothing is finished, everything is complete. He hangs a canvas up on the wall, but nothing becomes of it. He sets his stage for a play but there are no actors in it. A sobering thought emerges through the rubble, only to disintegrate in the barren mind of its bearer. Something borrowed. Something stolen. Something opportune. A blackened shroud, a hand me down gown of rags and silks, a costume fit for one who sits and cries. And when the dance is over, when the curtains are finally called, she’ll turn once more to Sunday's clown and cry behind the door.

Final presentation feels lacklustre and I am sad I haven't achieved as much as I wanted but look forward to really giving my all into the gradshow.

I’m just tired and re think a lot these day

Cuz lots of thgs happen and just trigger me and now my mentality is unstable af and also in a weak state

And now i maybe realise sth that

I before want to make art work or hv a desire to make is becuz someone complimented me about my work then i hv the “courage” or increase? My passion to make work -> and then feel like this is the fuel to my “imagination” that oh i want to make art work and also the fuel to my confident that i can be an artist and this is the only way to do

But then actually i dont want to make artwork

Just becuz someone complimented me and i think i was good at this so i start to do it

I hv no motive to do it anymore

I dont hv any thg to express even tho there are a big emotion and fuzzljng cloud in my head

I do hv huge emotion and idea and thought but i dont want to express it to artwork anymore

And also after going to different exhi and art fair i just feel like art is just an endless hole

A never ending pool which no one can reach it hands to it and determine whether it is a pool or just a fever dream

I know i have a sense i do but i still dont know how to make use of it

And now i’m so mentally unstable at some pt

Some thg related to gradshow then my heart will just beat harder and stronger as if i am in interview someone asking me a question i dont know how to ans

And if someone didnt comment my work positively

I will just doubt my self and i know what’s the pt of it

Art is subjective i know but is not even a “comparing problem” is i dont know how to handle the commentary and just doesnt feel right about it

Becuz i didnt receive a positive feedback

I just feel like i am the worse

This is a toxic relationship

Today we (finally) started to put together grad show identities. My group and I worked on developing the idea of using the interrobang as a symbol for our grad show. This was pretty hard to do, but we had a lot of fun regardless. We're not disappointed that our idea wasn't picked, as we knew that the others were much stronger.

History

In 1867, the University's founding was discovered. The Maidstone College of Art was founded during that time. The college then changed its name to The Kent Institute of Art and Design, beginning its journey in 1987 alongside a number of art colleges. The organisation was first founded as a university in 2004. Finally, in the year 2008, this Art Institute receives university status and changes its name to University for the Creative Arts (UCA).
