Thursday, August 10.
Graduation day at The University of Kyoto.
It's summer!
The season of sunshine, at least a little relaxation, maybe a holiday, and, for many, the season of graduation. The end of an era, if you will. The changing of the guard, one might say. The passing of the baton, if you must. It is the departure from school, college, high school, middle school, university—and into the beyond, into the great unknown. For where one door must close, another door must open.
This change is an all manner of things at once: exciting, frightening, a clear way forward, and a leap into the dark. However, what is without doubt is it makes for a great chance to dress to the nines—and then some. For most, this means suits, dresses, gowns, and a mortarboard. For those at The University of Kyoto, Japan, #graduation looks a little different. And quite frankly we ~cannot~ get enough.

I would like to say: I'm really going to miss you when I graduate, because while yes I do use you for schoolwork, you make researching weird subjects so much easier when I have questions when I write stuff for pleasure.
Graduating doesn't mean an end to researching weird subjects! First, check to see if your school offers access to alumni, and if not, remember that you can still read up to 100 articles online every month for free.

Choose plant based....
For The Animals - who are mutilated alive without pain relief and placed in small, cramped cages where they can hardly move.
For The Environment - which is damaged heavily by factory farms, leading contributors to climate change. Mass areas of rain forests are being cleared as well for growing grain to feed livestock.
For Taste - in addition to being introduced to exciting new foods, there are ever growing companies and eateries that are producing delicious plant based foods with the same textures and tastes as animal based meat.
For Equality - as animal agriculture thrives on the discrimination of animals, we can reject the notion that some lives matter less than others and value all living beings' right to live their life regardless of what they look like, what their species is, and how their bodies can be used by humans.
For World Hunger - because plant based foods use much less land and water than that which is used to produce animal based meat, we can feed millions of people.
For Health - as plant based foods tend to contribute to lower body weight, lower blood pressure, and lower cholesterol among other health benefits.
For Compassion - as humans, we hate to see other living beings suffer and die. But factory farms hide this suffering from us and lobby for laws to keep the public from knowing.
For Choices - unlike meat eating animals who need animal based meat to live, we have access to plenty of naturally grown foods as well as there are more and more plant based versions of meat and dairy being created.
For Reflection - as we can break from tradition and the notion of 'that is just the way things are' and instead be able to look at things from other perspectives.
For Peace - when you choose plant based, you have a sense of peace in your meals in that you are alleviating animal suffering and helping people and the planet.

I graduated university with a degree in aerospace engineering! I’m taking “college student” out of my bio :D
I started bullet journaling back in 2013 inspired by the studyblr community to keep my school tasks and events organized. I’m finishing my fourth journal! All of my journals have documented my academic journey since grade 10, and I’m excited to finally start a new one as I start this next phase of life ◡̈

Grads and Sads
Career & Tech Center graduation was last night, with yesterday as the last day of school for seniors. Gowns, ceremony, big smiles, awards, cheering family members. You know, the good stuff.
Girl is almost in tears this morning. Nearly as sad and downhearted as after a romantic breakup. No school today. No (much beloved) Mr. R explaining new concepts or giving kids The Look when they misbehave. No friends cracking jokes at lunch. No more friendly building with creaky old doors and hallways full of other teens. No more contact with the ‘sorta friends’; people who are fun to see in school but not close enough to maintain contact outside of school.
It really made me think. There is a lot of attention paid to the graduation process, the ceremony and the triumph. There is very little discussion of just how emotionally jarring - even crushing - it can be to suddenly have to let go of half of your life. And you can’t even revisit the building, because the joy that was there was the people around you, and they are scattered to the four winds. The teachers move on to a new class (they remember you, though, I do know that.) It hurts. It can hurt a LOT, and take a while to get over.
I know some grads are desperately relieved to be out, for a variety of reasons. But I think the majority shed at least a few tears. That’ll be the thought for the day, I guess.
