McDonald's Restaurants by Magnitude of Mountain Backdrop / Rut
by u/Gigitoe
Eating a Big Mac® while gazing at Big Mountains is an experience that millions of Americans can relate to. But little do we ask ourselves, which McDonald's restaurants have the biggest, baddest mountain backdrop?
So I set out to answer this question, using rut, a topographic metric that does particularly well at identifying cities with badass mountain backdrops. (For more info, check out this Mercury News article by John Metcalfe, or my research paper)
Roughly speaking, this is how rut works:
The higher the mountains rise above a restaurant, the more impressive they appear, and the greater the rut.
The more steeply the mountains rise above a restaurant, the more impressive they appear, and the greater the rut.
Here's a tier list that shows the rut of the ruttiest McDonald's restaurant in various cities. The cutoffs are rather arbitrary, so please don't poison me with a Grimace Shake if your city doesn't get the tier you like :)
S tier - rut > 400 m (i'm lovin' it. would visit just for mountain views)
Palm Springs, CA (647 m) | Weed, CA (624 m) | Springville, UT (609 m) | Lone Pine, CA (521 m) | Rancho Cucamonga, CA (503 m) | Kailua Kona, HI (432 m) | Salt Lake City, UT (404 m)
A tier - rut between 200 to 400 m (impressive, but probably wouldn't visit just for mountain views)
Colorado Springs, CO (383 m) | Gatlinburg, TN (273 m) | Tacoma, WA (267 m) | Tucson, AZ (246 m) | Juneau, AK (223 m) | Tucson, AZ (209 m) | Albuquerque, NM (215 m) | Las Vegas, NV (209 m)
B tier - rut between 100 and 200 m (mountains nearby, or distant big mountains, or very distant huge mountains)
Anchorage, AK (192 m) | Seattle, WA (185 m) | Manchester, VT (166 m) | El Paso, TX (160 m) | Los Angeles, CA (153 m) | Portland, OR (144 m) | Denver, CO (126 m) | Boise, ID (106 m)
C tier - rut between 50 and 100 m (big hills nearby, or distant mountains, or very distant big mountains)
Rutland, VT (99 m) | San Diego, CA (84 m) | Asheville, NC (75 m) | Middlesboro, KY (70 m) | Phoenix, AZ (67 m) | Roanoke, VA (46 m)
D tier - rut between 25 and 50 m (hills nearby, or distant big hills, or very distant mountains)
Billings, MT (40 m) | Rapid City, SD (37 m) | Dalton, GA (38 m) | Hot Springs, AR (37 m) | Pittsburgh, PA (33 m) | San Francisco, CA (30 m) | Portsmouth, OH (26 m) | Greenville, SC (26 m) | Huntsville, AL (25 m)
E tier - rut between 10 and 25 m (small hills nearby, or hills in the distance, or very distant big hills)
Syracuse, NY (21 m) | Concord, NH (20 m) | Duluth, MN (20 m) | New Haven, CT (14 m) | Cincinnati, OH (13 m) | Wausau, WI (13 m) | Portland, ME (10 m)
F tier - rut between 0 and 10 m (flatter than a patty)
Nashville, TN (8.5 m) | New York City (4.3 m) | Kansas City (2.8 m) | Miami, FL (1.7 m) | Houston (1.6 m), TX | Chicago, IL (0.6 m)
For more locations, here's a spreadsheet with the rut of every McDonald's on this map.
----------------
Note: a rut of X doesn't mean the surrounding mountains rise a height of X above the restaurant. Instead, a rut of X means that a restaurant's mountain backdrop is as impressive as a restaurant at the base of a vertical cliff of height X. The less steeply the surrounding mountains rise above the restaurant, the lower the rut.
Also note: rut only considers rise above surroundings (relative height differences and angle of elevation). it does not consider absolute elevation, nor the "aesthetics" of a mountain, nor visibility (or lack thereof) due to weather or smog.
Attributions: Gavin Rehkemper (locations), FABDEM (elevation model), Google Earth Engine (calculations), ESRI (basemap), Kai Xu (rut metric and map)
If you like rut, you'll probably like its older brother jut even more. Jut measures how impressive, spectacular, or badass a mountain is—considering both its height above surroundings and steepness. If you want to find the most impressive mountains near you or worldwide, you may find the link above to be useful.
Let us know if you have any questions or comments—I'm happy to address them!

I’ve bolded those names who are either current or former members of the BJU Board of Trustees. UPDATE: I eliminated this indication after receiving all the names who signed.
The men present who voted unanimously were either all of those or some of those. We don’t know. We can presume that the Officers were all likely present: Kevin Schaal, Gordan Dickson, Taigen Joos, Bud Steadman, and Michael Privett.
Who abstained? Bob III didn’t. Mike Harding as a present BJU Board member? Stephen Jones as a very absent member of the Royal family? Mark Minnick as a current employee?
The only name on there that I can guarantee did not abstain was Don Johnson, but he’s an old friend of mine. ;)
What do you think?
UPDATE, May 15, 2023:
The Positives have added an unredacted signatory list. WutBJU will mark all those signatories on the above list in bold italics.

Buen viaje, buena aventura.
Nos vemos pronto.

Creed Fisher Honors The Service & Sacrifice Of America’s Military Veterans & Their Families In New “Stars and Stripes” Music Video & 2024 Tour
American outlaw country singer-songwriter and recording artist Creed Fisher honors the service and sacrifice of America’s military veterans and their families in a new music video for his self-written tearjerker song “Stars and Stripes.” This Friday Fisher’s official “Stars and Stripes 2024” Tour tickets go on sale at CreedFisher.com at 10am ET and the new music video goes live on Creed’s YouTube at 12pm ET.
“I’d like to give a special thank you to all the servicemen and women who played a special part in the creation of this video,” Fisher said. “Having true veterans be a part of this gave it a real genuine aspect that I’ll forever value. I’ll always proudly honor our great country with pride and respect, never undervaluing the sacrifices that our brave service men and women give for our privilege to live in the land of the free. The Stars and Stripes Tour begins in 2024 and I encourage all members who have and/or are serving our country to come out and enjoy a show. I’d personally love to shake each one of your hands in appreciation for your service to our country. May God bless our families and freedoms, May God protect those who serve both domestically and abroad, and May God always bless the United States of America!”
“Stars and Stripes” plays on Creed’s newly released 12 song studio album, This Ain’t The Hamptons and is available for streaming everywhere digitally.

About Creed Fisher:
Country music’s rising Outlaw star Creed Fisher reminds fans to never lose sight of who you are, where you’re from, and never be afraid of working hard to earn an honest living. On his latest musical manifesto This Ain’t the Hamptons, his 13th studio album celebrates blue collar sensibilities, patriotism and fun-loving simple pleasures that are staples of Fisher’s music, this record comes at a time where country music consumers’ interests in bringing back the foundational roots of traditional country music are at an all time high. Timing is everything, and Fisher declares “This was the perfect album for true country music fans that miss that less modernized sound of old country music. If I’d said it three or four albums ago – they wouldn’t have heard it.” He’s confident the music and messages on This Ain’t the Hamptons will connect with the majority of Americans, but especially those who love country music and live the lifestyle. “They’re gonna love to hear this one.”

GREENVILLE SWAMP RABBITS IN SECOND PLACE AFTER BEATING NORFOLK ADMIRALS
By: Mark Shelley, Greenville Swamp Rabbits
NORFOLK, VA – Ethan Somoza's hat trick led the way for the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to top the Norfolk Admirals 6-4 on Friday night at the Norfolk Scope.
GAME SHEET: Click here
The second meeting between the Swamp Rabbits and the Admirals started with an early power-play chance for Greenville that was neutralized by the Norfolk penalty killers. Greenville scored at even strength at 7:08 of the first, as Ethan Somoza sped down the right wing and netted his 15th of the season.
The second began with Greenville adding to their lead as Alex Ierullo slid the puck to a wide-open Josh McKechney, who scored his ninth of the season just 1:14 into the period. After a failed Admirals clear, Brannon McManus netted his eighth of the season at 2:23 for a 3-0 Greenville lead. Norfolk responded with a pair of goals from Brian Bowen and Darren McCormick at 4:26 and 6:24 to cut the Greenville lead to one. At 11:11, the Swamp Rabbits regained a two-goal advantage as Alex Ierullo scored his 19th of the season. Norfolk, again, put together a pair of goals from Denis Smirnov and Bowen at 15:04 and 16:20 to tie the game at 4-4.
In the third, the Swamp Rabbits broke the deadlock with Somoza's second goal of the game, a one-timer from a McKechney feed at 5:47. Somoza completed his first-career hat-trick with his 17th goal of the season on a power-play one-timer at 19:40, solidifying the 6-4 final.
With the win, the Swamp Rabbits improve to 30-16-7-0 while the Admirals drop to 13-38-1-3. The victory lifts the Swamp Rabbits into a three-way tie for second place in the South Division with Florida Everblades and the South Carolina Stingrays.
The Swamp Rabbits and the Admirals' rematch on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope.
Swamp Rabbits tickets can be purchased at SwampRabbits.com or at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena Box Office.

18th Annual E-Money Year in Review: 2022 Edition
This was a weird year. There were many changes, and I had a lot of unique experiences. In the end, I think I'm in a better place (literally and figuratively) than I was a year ago.
In February, I was up for my first Emmy award. I didn't win. It's a cliche, but it's definitely an honor just to be nominated.
Around this time, I got to check a couple more basketball arenas off the list. I went to Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. I can't imagine I'll find another chance to go to either of those places. But they both were charming in their own little way. I literally just walked into MTSU's arena. I had a ticket, but there was nobody checking them at the door.
With my contract expiring at WKRN at the beginning of June, I started applying for jobs in earnest. Around this same time, we learned that Petey had been matched with the VA Hospital in Boston. This assured that Petey and I would soon no longer be living in the same city (as I didn't have much of an interest in moving to Boston).
This was a sad time. Now, I've really grown to appreciate the time that Petey and I had together in Nashville. It was nice being able to just make impromptu plans with her and see her on a random Tuesday. But that's not possible anymore, unfortunately.
We did have a chance to take a nice little trip in March, though. We went down to Savannah for St. Patrick's Day, then over to Charleston, where I got to see my friend Caleb. We stopped briefly in Columbia, then went up to Greenville, where I got to see Jessica and we saw some 2nd round NCAA tournament games. It was nice to see some parts of SC that I hadn't gotten to visit in a while.
Petey left town at the end of May, so it was just me in Nashville at that point. Simultaneously, just as I was wrapping up my job at WKRN, I got covid (for the first time). The timing was absolutely strange. I missed the first 3 days of my last week of work, but was able to come in for the last 2. Overall, having covid was terrible. I was absolutely bed-ridden for 1 or 2 days. But I got some paxlovid, which sped my recovery up.
My last day at WKRN was June 3rd. What a whirlwind of a day. This wasn't just my last day at WKRN, it was my last day in news. It was very, very, very difficult to come to the decision not to do that job anymore. But the stress was just something I could not deal with anymore. I'm sad that I left that business, but I know it was for the best.
I had been applying for jobs, but still didn't have one lined up at the point that my contract was due to expire. So I figured that since I had unlimited free time for the first time in my professional life, I might as well take advantage of it. I went on a 5,000 mile road trip. I got to see the Badlands in South Dakota, Devils Tower in Wyoming, my sister in Colorado, New Mexico, and then a week in Texas.
The highlight of the trip for me was Big Bend National Park. It's just so remote. I took a rowboat over the Rio Grande and spent an hour or so in Mexico. I'd love to return to Big Bend again. My trip later took me through San Antonio, Houston, Galveston, and Austin, where I was able to see my cousin, Andrew, and his now-fiancee Elisa.
That trip was something special. The vast majority of it was spent by myself, which really allowed me some time to think. I also love just driving through these sparsely-populated areas out west. I definitely need to do something like that again.
After I got back from my trip (which took about 2.5 weeks), I was faced with the cold reality that I was unemployed and in a city that I had no connection to. I wanted to move back to Pittsburgh, but I figured I should wait until I had a job lined up before I moved. I was able to make ends meet by driving for uber and lyft. But this is definitely a time in my life that was especially trying. In the end, I applied for about 80 jobs. Of those, I got interviews with maybe half a dozen or so. Trying to break into a different industry was especially difficult, and not at all like the job application processes I've experienced in the past.
On September 1st, I had an interview with UPMC for a job at US Steel Tower. I can still vividly remember my thoughts as I was going down the escalator, leaving the building. I was so absolutely terrified that this was going to be the last time I would ever be there.
Working in that building, to me, felt like it would convey a sense of legitimacy. This is the tallest building in Pittsburgh. When I was younger, working in a place like that, doing a job like that, felt like it was the sort of thing that “grown-ups” did. I really wanted that.
A week or so later, I got the call that I had been offered the job, which I started at the beginning of October.
Working at UPMC has been very different than what I experienced in my time in news. It is so, so, so less stressful. I feel supported at work and feel like people appreciate my concerns. That matters so much to me.
I moved out of Nashville on September 23rd. I’d been there for a little over 4 years. Nashville is a good city, and I have many positive memories from there. But Pittsburgh has always been home to me, and I am so glad to be back.
