Greer Lankton, who was born fifty-nine years ago today, was a revolutionary American artist known for her lifelike dolls, and for helping set the cultural tone of New York City in the 1980s. . “Beautifully sewn,” the New York Times described, “with extravagant clothes, make-up and hairstyles, [Lankton’s dolls] were at once glamorous and grotesque and exuded intense, Expressionistic personalities…They presaged many of the concerns of ‘90s art, including the emphasis on the body, sexuality, fashion, and, in their resemblance to puppets, performance.” . Lankton’s work is often described as an extension of “her lifelong exploration of—and embattled relationship with—the body.” As a child, well before undergoing gender-affirming surgery (or, “the operation,” as she called it), Lankton was seen as an extremely effeminate boy who escaped into dolls for friendship and solace. . Lankton was, as Meredith Osborne described her, “one of the bright stars of the ‘80s East Village art scene. She collaborated with and inspired fellow artists including David Wojnarowicz, filmmaker Nick Zedd, and photographers Peter Hujar, David Armstrong, and Nan Goldin…She made dolls of her heroes and friends who flouted social and cultural norms.” . Lankton and Paul Monroe, Osborne continued, “became partners in life and work in 1983. They were uncannily well-matched, with creative and personal sensibilities that were of a piece: beauty resided in difference, too much was exactly right, and freak flags were made to be flown high.” The couple married in 1987. . In 1992, Lankton and Monroe moved to Chicago, where Lankton continued to work; her last major exhibit was for the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh in 1996. . Greer Lankton died on November 18, 1996; she was thirty-eight. . Since 1999, Paul Monroe has worked to build up the Greer Lankton Archives Museum (@greer_lankton_archives_museum) and to restore Lankton’s rightful place in America’s cultural history. #lgbthistory #HavePrideInHistory #GreerLankton (at New York, New York)
