Preparing for the High Holy Days in Algiers

As the first fruits of they year appeared in the street markets, Jewish housewives busied themselves preparing festive dishes, jams and jelly for the High Holy Days. The chidren enjoyed waffles, biscuits and ice cream. Caroline Elisheva Rebouh shares her memories of childhood in Algiers in the Morial newsletter (With thanks: Leon):

Algerian street market

In the last days of the summer holidays, mothers were busying themselves with the household chores in readiness for the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Succot.

The families gathered around festive meals. They needed to prepare traditional dishes in advance for guests to sample, and especially  pre-prepared confectionery and pastries.  At the time, few of us had a refrigerator.

The markets overflowed with fruit of all kinds: housewives selected quinces, white-flesh sweet potatoes, figs, and pinkish grapes.

The quinces were chosen carefully to be almost sure that they were not “visited” by unwanted worms. They were rinsed,  peeled and cut into quarters –  hard to do as the fruit was hard. The seeds were removed and reserved separately for jam and quince jelly. People loved it  at the end of the Yom Kippur fast!

The fruits were boiled to soften the flesh so that  the sugar syrup seeped into the flesh of the fruit and the sugar remained clear. It was during this operation that the seeds (quince cores) were added so that the pectin let the syrup gel. Some of the boiled quinces were cooked over low heat. During the prolonged simmering,  sugar was added in small quantities,  while  the mix was stirred to make a fruit paste.

The figs were also quickly turned into a light-coloured and appetizing jam.

The grapes: we chose a variety called “bou amar” : the grapes were round, relatively large and pink. Mothers armed their children with fresh feathers  to deseed the grapes. The jam was also pinkish and pleasant, and some mothers would wrap the seeds of the grapes in fresh compresses to make jelly.

A little later there would appear small apples of a very pale green and with light pink spots on the side which were used for the Rosh Hashanah  seder and which were called Kabyle apples. Small white and pink peaches with firm, tender  and fragrant flesh  were also called Kabyle (Berber) – no doubt coming from Kabylia.

In Algiers,  we children ignored the entire selihoth period. We only experienced the season through the pleasure of tasting small amounts of candy floss, fine biscuits and other delights.

During and at the end of  summer,  small stalls “flowered” on street corners: the yaouled (children or young teenagers) offered us freshly-picked prickly pears which they peeled with dexterity and presented them on fig tree leaves  so that our little fingers did not touch the  thorns. Other yaouled offered grilled corn on the cob: we savoured them on the benches in the public gardens where we played with our cousins, neighbors and classmates.

From time to time, we gathered around small confectioners who tempted us with sugar of different colours which they sold in small quantities.  We sucked them by holding them between our fingers and then crunched our teeth on them.

The waffle merchants  announced their passage by waving wooden boards with handles on both sides. festooned with  mini-shutters which tinkled with a dry and dull sound.

At that time we liked our waffles a little thicker than ice cream cones. They were rolled up in cones and stacked in a sort of cylinder about one meter high. The merchant placed it at ground level to serve his young customers.

But fine biscuits weren’t the only popular waffles: at Grosoli, a popular ice cream parlor in Algiers, the ice cream cups were decorated with a fan or a fine rolled biscuit.The Bitone company also marketed what were called “funny wafers”  : they carried short slogans like “You won” or “I love you”.

When many years later we found ourselves in Marseille, we could no longer find ice creams like those of Algiers.

Drift wasn't quite sure how to explain it, but watching Ratchet work the grill on the opposite end of their back deck from the matched rocking chairs primed his interface array like nothing else he could name. It was almost embarrassing, really. Especially considering the way Rodimus kept throwing him knowing looks. In return, though, Drift made certain to give Rodimus a good thump every time he stared just a little too long at Thunderclash, who leaned on the railing beside Ratchet and the grill. Of course, some of it could have been the booze they'd already broken open to make sure it was "good enough" to go with dinner.

"We totally don't even need that thing," Rodimus called out to them. He shot a couple of short flaming bursts from the exhaust pipes at his wrists. "Hold up that fish in front of me and let me take a crack at it!"

The answering snort was entirely expected—and not just by Drift, seeing the smirks on both their guests. Ratchet turned to give Rodimus a look that said exactly what he thought of Drift's best friend. It was a look that never failed to set Drift to laughing. As he tossed his helm back, Drift chortled and barely felt the series of swats Rodimus laid down on his shoulder. In fact, Rodimus coiled around him like some sort of coiling electro-snake before he squawked and fought back. He shoved his hand in Rodimus' face and the both of them tumbled to the deck planking, each whooping in surprise at the sudden tilt and the blare of their horns with the landing.

Optical shutters blinking, Drift met Rodimus' shocked gaze with his own. Moments later, he joined his best friend in dissolving once again into (this time) shared laughter. He rolled onto his back, Rodimus doing the same beside him, folding his hands over his belly as the warmth of the setting sun suffused his frame. Their laughter rolled into silly chuckling at one another, accompanied by occasional juvenile slaps, until the shadows of their significant others leaned over them. Drift grinned up at the questioning frown of his conjunx. It was quite dour in comparison to Thunderclash's expression, the larger mech seeming quite amused at what he saw.

"Don't look at me like that," Drift said, swallowing one last chuckle. "How often have you told me to never lose this side of myself?"

Really, who could blame him at the escape of another snicker and having to jab and elbow into Rodimus' side when the mech followed along as Ratchet and Thunderclash both raised a perfectly synchronized orbital ridge? While Thunderclash smiled and shook his helm, Ratchet rolled his optics and grumped down at them. "You two are ridiculous," he informed them, setting his fists on his hips. His good set of grilling tongs jabbed at the air like a misshapen sword as he swung around and headed back toward the grill. "Now if you don't mind, why don't you head inside and get the salad ready? Maybe grab that second bottle of Vaporexian white out of the fridge while you're at it."

When Rodimus started to push to his pedes, Drift slapped out a hand across his belly to stop him. He turned his helm to meet Rodimus' optics, his field tickling mischief between the two of them, and mouthed, "Don't. Not yet."

Above them, Thunderclash's shadow shifted as the big mech tossed a look toward Ratchet then back at them. He opened his mouth to speak, but Drift shook his helm, sending a flicker of his mischief Thunderclash's way, as well. Holding up a hand, Drift slowly started curling his fingers toward his palm, one at a time. He whispered the countdown, flicking his gaze between the two mechs watching him.

"Five. Four. Three. Two. One," he said, pausing just a nano-klik longer with his hand curled in a loose fist, "Now."

"That doesn't sound like getting off your aft to go get the salad ready like I asked, now does it?" Ratchet accused from his position at the grill. Drift didn't even have to look to know Ratchet hadn't turned away from the sizzling steelfin fillets and the folded foil bag of seasoned chromium tuber chunks.

Grinning at Rodimus and Thunderclash, Drift waved his hands as if to say "could he be more predictable?" Rolling onto his belly, Drift shoved to his pedes and reached to grab Rodimus' hand, dragging him upright as well. Brushing the dust from his hips and backside, Drift managed to refrain from doing the same for Rodimus. Such a common expression of friendship between them, Drift always felt uncomfortable being so touchy with Rodimus in the presence of Thunderclash. Why he didn't feel the same way around Ratchet he didn't know, freely brushing debris from his best friend under the watchful optics of his own conjunx. Having the big and friendly mech that was Rodimus' almost-conjunx observe something so intimate, however, never failed to throw Drift off his game. Much to his dismay, it amused Ratchet to no end.

As a matter of fact, he could feel the humor bouncing along the bond he shared with the mech. It was just as strong in the coiling tendrils of his field. Without bothering to turn around, Drift flipped a finger Earth-style solidly in his direction. He rolled his optics at the sound of the smug chuckle Ratchet couldn't hold back and fought another grin of his own. Catching hold of Rodimus again, Drift dragged him back inside toward the kitchen.

While Drift dug through the cooler that held their more perishable goods, Rodimus leaned over the sink and peered out the window at the back deck. He drummed his fingers over the wire brushed stainless surface of the double basin, those golden spoiler wings of his flicking in a display of his own incoming misbehavior. The broad smile turned on Drift did nothing to dissuade that assumption. "Hey, Drift?"

Setting items on the counter beside the cooler as he found them, Drift offered Rodimus a listening slant of his nearest audial flare. "Yes, Roddy?"

"How far does the spray on this thing go?"

Confused, Drift frowned and turned another look at him. He found Rodimus waggling the sink sprayer between them. "No," Drift told him. "Don't even consider it. He'd think it was me."

"You're no fun," Rodimus declared before cranking the cold water on as high as it would go and turning the spray right at the mech standing in front of the grill—such a tempting target. Drift understood, had given in to the urge himself more than once. As proven by the hollered outcry from his conjunx a moment later.

"Drift! Your aft is toast!"

He'd have been lying if he said he didn't laugh right along with Rodimus.

21. If you wrote a “missing scene” in [insert fic], what would it be?

oh this one is EASY. i would have added a scene in chapter 1, when they're doing the merch filming, which would cover this absolute lunacy. there was another post floating round that had the video but i can't find it now afjkdfs. anyway if you haven't seen it, it's from unboxed i think? and it's one of the first things they filmed together and you can tell oscar is still pretty shy and awkward around him. and lando is like "wow, you've GROWN" and then rakes his eyes up and down oscar extremely unsubtly and grills him on exactly how tall he is and does his patented "oh you're so big and strong and i'm sooo tiny and easy to manhandle" shtick. and oscar is sort of flustered/amused?

tragically, i first saw this video AFTER i wrote and posted chapter 1. i'm mad about it because it would have made such a fun scene of lando aggressively flirting early doors and oscar just...not grasping what's going on.

questions for fic writers

“I take it you and Lando are getting on,” Logan says to him later. They’re hanging around after the signing session, waiting to be called back to their respective garages. “Saw he soft-launched you on jpg.”

Oscar looks at him blankly. “I don’t know what any of those words mean, mate.”

Logan rolls his eyes, gets his phone out of his pocket. “Sorry, forgot you’re spiritually in your sixties.”

He opens up Instagram, types something into the search bar and turns the screen round to show Oscar.

Oscar takes the phone, squints at it. It’s a moody black-and-white photo, the dark tones so artificially boosted that it takes him a few seconds to realise it’s a photo of himself, looking over his shoulder at Lando as he’d walked to his driver room in Singapore.

He remembers Lando taking it. He’d been carrying his fancy camera around as usual all weekend, snapping shots of the crew, random shit in the garage, killing time in between sessions. A couple of Oscar sitting at the central island with headphones on, reviewing practice data. Ribbing him when a few of them turned out looking particularly serial-killerish. 

He’d called Oscar’s name before practice, as Oscar was heading in to get changed into his fireproofs. Oscar had glanced round, and Lando was standing a few feet away, camera raised to his eye. The shutter had whirred before he had time to process what was happening.

“Gotcha,” Lando had said, lowering the camera and smiling. Oscar had laughed, carried on into his room, thought nothing more of it.

Big Bear, Little Bear - Constantin & Bettany

The evening fog rolled over the forested hills and valleys of Barovia… Its cold mists spreading through the twisted trees and dark skies. The fog made everything appear subdued as if seen through a thin veil. Everything stood still, not a noise could be heard as it seemed like the silence would spread for eternity.

There was no sign of life in the forest, no chirping night bugs, chattering rodents, or howling wolves. The only identifiable confirmation of at least some living thing was a caravan parked near a cobbled street, two massive steeds tied to a nearby tree. What appeared to be the warm light of a candlestick flickering faintly from its shuttered windows.

The inhabitants of the cavern had left it, leaving but one member behind of his own volition.  

Bettany Blackstarr sat alone, the party having left to find somewhere to get a drink, led by the boisterous (and frankly insufferable) Winchester. The cowboy claimed that they needed to make a stop “to clear their minds”, which apparently meant getting drunk while on a race against time. 

Well, the caravan wasn’t entirely empty, the unconscious body of Constantin Vasiliev accompanied him, his friend lying motionless on the wooden floor. 

It was the first time Bettany had been truly alone long enough to look at the Barovian’s wounds, even now he struggled to look too deeply at the horror that had become of him.

Constantin didn’t look well. His skin had become chalky, and paler than normal, eyes having sunk into his sockets slightly. His body had been horrifically burned, twisted, and pulled skin melded with his chainmail. The puncture in his neck spread nasty tendrils of dark purple magic through his veins, spreading under his skin, creeping up onto his jawline and down his chest. His curly mop of dark hair lay flat and matted with blood across his forehead.

Bettany shuddered, looking at his friend in this state was upsetting… it should be him lying there, maybe if he hadn't been so weak.

Bettany crouched closer to Constantin, placing a single finger on his forehead.

Constantin’s corpse offered no response as it was poked. He was, for all intents and purposes, dead to the world.

He was tired… so tired from the journey,

He hadn't had any time to think about what happened. How his failure at the windmill led directly to the near murder of one of his only friends. Bettany shook his head, closing his eyes as he attempted to calm his mind from the thought.

His consciousness soon slipped into sleep, a grey environment made of smudged shapes, nothing distinguishable from the other blurry objects in the foreground. 

Inside the grey dreamscape, a figure loomed over Bettany. It was a gargantuan figure, clad in black iron armor, a weave of chains forming sturdy yet flexible panels of armor. Its face was obscured by a similarly tinted helmet, a flat panel of iron with grills to allow airflow, and slits in the visor for sight. It simply stared down at the Druid unblinkingly, silently, a veritable statue.

Bettany felt a presence creep behind him. He tensed, turning cautiously to face the intruder, the setting around him morphing into a faint cobbled street. 

Bettany was met with armor, having to crane his head upwards to meet the figure’s eyes… or where his eyes would be.

The armor was unfamiliar, not Constantin’s… not armor that Bettany had seen him adorn at the very least.

“… What?” Bettany muttered, slowly reaching a hand to touch the black-clad figure.

Two gloved hands shot upwards, a sudden movement. They came to rest on the sides of the helmet, lifting it from the armored man’s head. Under the steel bucket was… Constantin.

He looked… Different. His face wasn’t as gaunt, his eyes had a bit more life in them. He stared down at Bettany with not even the vaguest feeling on his face.

“You’re… here?” Bettany asked, his voice echoing through the dreamscape.

Bettany sighed with relief, rushing towards Constantin, throwing his arms around him.

The giant of a man glared down at Bettany. His arms raised wide, avoiding reciprocating the sudden embrace. He did not recoil or attack, but there was a tense air in the grey void. After a moment, he spoke in a dull, harsh accent.

“что ты делаешь, маленький человек?”

Bettany dropped the hug, backstepping in a panic.

‘He doesn’t think in common!’ Bettany recalled. Bettany didn’t speak Barovian, he’d picked up some of the linguistics but was still nowhere close to being fluent.

“Constantin?” He asked, the grey environment distorting momentarily as Bettany lost his focus trying to translate his words into Barovian. 

 “я нет.. имея…понимание?” Bettany stammered, looking confusedly at the paladin.

”кто ты.” The spectral form of Constantin said flatly, with a harshness to his tone that Bettany would know the living Constantin offered to those he found threatening.

Even a basic course of Barovian was overkill to understand Constantin, especially given the context of his expression. He was asking who Bettany was. He did not recognize his friend. Not here.

Bettany felt himself shake. The words had hit him like a punch, he pointed a trembling finger to his own chest.

“Друг,” Bettany muttered, “friend… I’m your friend.”

Bettany paused, searching Constantin’s cold gaze for any sort of recognition, his eyes welling with tears.

“Друг.” He repeated.

Constantin's unrecognizing glare softened, but only slightly. 

"Как тебя зовут, друг?" The interrogation continued. There was an air of hostility, but it did not project outward. It was reclusive... Defensive.

Bettany bit his lip, exhaling shakily, “Bettany Blackstarr? Mеня зовут черная звезда…”

Bettany shook his head, looking around desperately. Why didn’t it work? What did he do wrong?

“You don’t remember me?” Bettany asked, “помнить?”

His shoulders tensed, the scenery re-working itself like water spilling into ink, foggy structures forming a similar scene… the vague outline of a bank in the woods near a creek.

"Bettany." Constantin murmured in Common. As the name echoed through the forest, his shape changed. The tall black suit of armor morphed into a more familiar leather gambeson, Constantin returning to more of his normal height than the towering Knight. "What are you doing here?" Constantin asked vaguely, almost staring through Bettany.

The shift in Constantin’s appearance was enough to give Bettany a fleeting moment of comfort, as he was no longer staring at a hulking figure with his dying friend’s face. 

“I’m here to talk to you…” Bettany said, still craning his head to look up at Constantin. “Do you know what’s happening?”

Against the monochromatic world, Bettany’s eyes stood out like two gold ingots in a bed of salt, radiating a warm glow. 

“What do you seek from me?" Constantin asked, staring through Bettany and completely ignoring any mention of his dying. It was as if he was almost there, but not entirely. A recording of him, playing on loop.

The robotic-ness of Constantin’s presence frustrated Bettany. How could he save Constantin if he couldn’t even converse with his spirit? He owed his life to Constantin, and he was too weak to return the favor. Too frail and foolish.

What did he seek? He sought his friend… he sought…

“Guidance,” Bettany replied. He needed to know how to be strong, how to protect the party while Constantin’s life lay in limbo.

“I need you to teach me… I need to be strong, help me. Help me, please.” Bettany begged.

The spectral visage of the Barovian Paladin slowly knelt, bringing himself closer to Bettany's height. One of his large, gloved hands reached out, an index finger extending and tapping on Bettany's chest with a dull thud.

"Strength... Is here." Murmured the ghost. "Love is strength. Trust is strength. Isolation.... Is safety." He muttered, his voice a low, rumbling whisper. He cast his ice-blue eyes up to Bettany, and the Druid could see that they almost... Came alive. As if he was truly speaking to Constantin, rather than the emotionless guard, the keeper of the spirit.

“Strength begets burden..." The specter continued, before taking a deep breath.

“Guardians are chosen not because they are the strongest or the wisest... But because they have the force of will to bear the burden." Constantin intoned softly, looking up to Bettany with some sort of lucidity. The Druid could almost believe that he was truly speaking to his friend. "I cannot teach you to fight like me. I can only remind you of what you already know, младший брат."

Tears rolled down Bettany’s cheeks, “You’re hurt really bad… you’re hurt really bad and it’s my fault.”

Bettany buried his face in his hands, guilt overwhelming him.

“I don’t know what to do, I don’t know how to help you.”

It was now that Bettany felt the weight of his dual sickles strapped to his sides. He fumbled with the leather clasp, undoing the gold fastens and holding the weapons in each hand.

“Teach me more. Teach me to use these so that this doesn’t happen again.” Bettany instructed, his knuckles whitening on the wooden handles.

Constantin shook his head, smiling sadly.

 “I cannot teach you to be strong like me.” He rose to his full standing height. 

“We are different, you and I. You are strong in ways I am not.” His ice-blue eyes locked on Bettany’s, commanding focus. 

“Nature is your strength.” He intoned somewhat cryptically. “Your nature is your strength.”

Bettany protested, “I don’t understand. I can’t use nature to save the party. I- I can’t fight with it.” Bettany shook his head, his heart pounding in his chest as he turned his back on Constantin, fingers gripping at his long hair. “I can use spells, sure, but that’s… that's it. What if we enter another dead zone? I’m useless. I can’t even turn myself into something strong, just a stupid fucking bat! I turned into a panther once and I passed out, I passed out and you died.” Bettany’s words came out choppy as his quick breath turned to sobs, tears rolling down his cheeks as he sank to his knees, entirely crying now.

The hulking form of Constantin knelt beside Bettany, placing a hand on his shoulder again, pulling him upwards to meet his gaze. “I chose my fate.” He said plainly. “I died protecting what I cared about.” He continued. You are in my home, and my spirit will always go with you in this place, in life and in death.” 

His image began to wane slightly. “Father once said that a man would not die... So long as his name is spoken. As long as you remember me, little brother, I will be with you.” Kneeling there, Constantin did something inconceivable to those who knew him in life. He extended his arms, beckoning Bettany forward. 

Bettany threw himself into the paladin’s arms, burying himself into the thick leather jacket that clad Constantin’s torso. “Thank you… thank you for being my brother.” Bettany’s words were near unintelligible as he cried. The weight of Constantin began to fade as the dream began to weaken. Bettany desperately clung to Constantin, knowing this could very well be the last time he’d be able to... Even in this state of illusion. It could be the last time the two spoke. 

Bettany’s physical body stirred, the connection weakening as he woke. The world faded like fabric washed out from the sun, the surroundings blurring as it drew to an end. “I’m not ready,” Bettany said in a desperate attempt to stop what he knew he couldn’t prevent.
