Things to put in your book of shadows
Of course, only put in your book of shadows/grimoire what you want. If you don't want to put certain subjects in your book then that's fine. It's your book, utilize it how you want. This is just a masterlist of ideas that I've put together. Feel free to add anything else to the list that I may have missed, because there's absolutely no way I included everything.
And for the love of all the gods, if you come across a closed entity or practice, don't try to work with the entity or practice if you're not already part of that group or tradition. You can research it but don't practice it.

March Week 2 - Spell and Ritual Outline
So this week's prompts sort of all ride alongside one another and go toward one common theme. How to outline and create spells and rituals. It will all focus on the who, what, when, where and how, more or less, which is a pretty good model for anything.
Monday- Basic Outline
New Page/ Lab Notebook - So for this whole ordeal this week, we're going to work mostly in our lab notebook and do some internal thinking, and research. It will be mostly one page each for spell making and ritual making for the entire week, or pages depending on how detailed you want to go. So to start out, make one page for each or add them to the pages you used to define what a spell and a ritual are.
So what are the who, what, when, where, and why of spells and rituals, to you? Make a list of these on a sheet of paper and fill them in with what you feel these things are. You can even do these on the pages you've already made. We'll expand on them as the week goes on.
Research/ new page - herbal research. Pick another herb from you list and go to town on the research! Magical and mundane uses, associations and so on!
Tuesday - purpose, method, ingredients
Research - this is about the “who” “what” and “why” what purposes can you perform a spell or ritual for? Who is the spell for? Who are you performing it on? It can be practically anything or anyone. What are you doing the spell for, what do you want it to accomplish? Looking for love? Need confidence? Want to manifest something? Want to bring more money into your life? Solidify a friendship? Protect yourself or someone else? This is followed directly by why. Why are you looking for love? Why are you protecting yourself or someone else? What you are doing and why you are doing it are intimately connected. Sometimes it can take a great deal of introspection to figure out how these are connected, other times, it is obvious.
Methodology -this is the “how” in the spell. What methods are there to casting spells and performing rituals? Look back at your types of magic pages and think hard on the ways you can cast spells for those different types of magic. Is there a certain way to prepare for spells and rituals? What steps do you take to prepare for the spell and what steps do you take after the spell or ritual? What steps are a part of the ritual? How do you actually perform the spell? Method of spellwork has everything to do with the “how” in the spell, where the purpose beforehand is the “why”.
Ingredients/ tools - this is the “what” within the spell. What ingredients if any does it require? What tools does it require? What kinds of things are a part of the spell? Incense, statues, gems and so on. What do you need to bring to the spell or ritual for it to be what it is?
Wednesday - location, direction, timing
Location and timing - this is the “where”and “when” within the spell or ritual. Is there a specific location you need to perform the spell or ritual? A specific direction you have to face? Do you have to wait for a certain day, week, month? A certain astrological sign or event, like a phase of the moon? Does the spell require you to face north or south? East or west? Or to go through all the directions? How does this information fit into your outline?
New page/ research - gemstone/ other- pick another gem or what have you from your list and research it! Everything from mundane to magical uses! How is it formed? Where is it from? So on and so forth.
Thursday - other parts of spells/ rituals
What other things are part of your spells or rituals? How do you make them yours? What personal touches and flares do you bring to your magic?
Friday - putting it to practice
Practical- if you’ve outlined the general idea of a spell and ritual, or even if you’ve made a specific one, let’s make one, and then do it! Perform the spell or ritual! And journal about it afterwards!
This has been a long and heavy week, but we made it!
Good Luck and Happy Crafting witches!

Things that feel magical to me that aren't inherently magical:
The rush of my blood and the burning air in my lungs when I run
The lilting, drowsy feeling as I awaken to the sound of birds chirping
The sound of a conch shell mimicking the roar of waves when I put it up to my ear
Comfortable silence with those I cherish
Rainstorms followed by the shining sun
Sitting (alone) in nature with a hot cup of tea
The warmth of the sunlight on an otherwise cold day
Random, unprompted midday naps
Babbling brooks and crashing waterfalls

Tumblr media
This week’s questions are miscellaneous!
🌷 What is your goal for your craft this week?
🌷 What flower, if any, do you feel most connected to? Why?
🌷 Or which flower do you feel complements your craft the most?
🌷 Have you researched anything new recently?
🌷 What would you like to research this week?
🌷 What spellwork have you done recently? Did it work?
🌷 If it didn't, why do you think so? What do you think you would do differently if you tried again?

Bonus Prompt - Other Perspectives
For this week's bonus prompt we're going to take a look at our own perspective on things and the perspectives of others.
Think and look back on you pages, about how magic works in your perspective, about how different things work. Then look at other people's ideas, thoughts, and beliefs on the same subjects.
No two witches practice exactly the same, or have the same beliefs. And one way to grow in our own beliefs, is to challenge them. To discuss with others who don't believe the same things those differences. It helps to broaden our perspectives, our minds, and if done correctly, our hearts.
So take a look at different perspectives and beliefs on magic and witchcraft. Compare it to your own. And if you know someone who believes differently than you, perhaps take the time to discuss those differences. You could both learn something.

Starting your Grimoire/Book of Shadows/Book of Mirrors  *ੈ✩‧₊˚
Whatever you call it, Grimoire, Book of Shadows, Book of Mirrors, or just even your witchy journal, it can be a bit hard to start! A little P.S. I call it a grimoire, so that is what I will be calling it throughout this post. If you don’t that’s fine, just replace the words with whatever your preferred term is in your head! Its easier than typing Grimoire/Book of Shadows/Book of Mirrors every time I want to type something out.
So, our first couple of questions are: what is a Grimoire? What is a Book of Shadows? And what is the difference? I will be answering all of these questions and more in this blog today.
Now, everyone does their grimoire differently. Just because I may do something one way in no means does this mean you have to do your grimoire the same way.
Okay so, what is a grimoire? A grimoire is sort of a journal for your witchcraft notes. This can be spell recipes, correspondences, history on certain topics. It is very personal and unique to the author of it, and no two will be the same. Every single thing you learn or practice about your craft can be in your grimoire.
Now, some people define a grimoire as just spells, correspondences, whatnot. Personally, I keep all sorts of things in my grimoire, including journal entries, my shadow work and more. This is where the difference between a book of shadows and a grimoire come in. A book of shadows has a heavy journaling aspect to it, while also containing magical components. Now, a book of mirrors is all about reflection, a lot of shadow work and meditation can be found in a book of mirrors. Whatever you want to write and call your book, is up to you.
You will probably go through many grimoires throughout your craft. People may have separate ones, like ones just for herbs or a pretty one while the other is very rough and note like.
Another thing, you have no right to see another person’s grimoire. It can be a very personal thing to someone, and sure you may ask, but do not through a fit if the answer is no. Some people may be open with their grimoire, like I am. Of course I am I’m writing it on a public blog site.
We are finally to the meat of the post:
How to Create Your Grimoire
I will not be showcasing my physical grimoire, as honestly my lighting is terrible right now it’s like 9:30 as I write this, but I will be guiding you along the way of how to start your very own grimoire.
First off, you need a place to put your writings. Whether this be more traditional and in an actual book, or on a blog or a google doc. All are valid ways of keeping your grimoire, it’s all up to preference. Personally I have three grimoires. This one here, a fancy, physical one in a very pretty leather binding, and a binder.
If you’re going the physical route, I recommend something sturdy that is going to last you a long time, and something you’ll be comfortable messing up in. The pretty stuff can come later. It should have quite a lot of pages, and in my opinion be a bit larger than normal. Trust me, I started out with tiny travel sized journals, and you fill them up like nothing. Another thing that can be a good way to go is getting yourself a ring binder. This way you can put printables in, you can change the order of your pages, you can take pages out. In my writing style, I write all my knowledge raw in a binder, pretty it up in a pretty journal, and then write it here, for you guys to see.
When buying a book, you can also throw this all to the wind and simply go with which one you feel drawn to. If you want a pocket book, go for it! You want a super fancy one that could be very delicate, I’m not going to stop you.
When getting a physical book, I recommend dedicating 2-5 pages at the front to be your table of contents, if you number all your pages. This way you can find things super easily if you want to recall them.
Now, if you do not want other people to see your grimoire without your consent, I recommend charming and putting a protection spell on your grimoire. I will actually make a post detailing how to do this in the future.
Now that we’ve gone through how to start a grimoire, what should be put in it? Well, here are 50 Grimoire prompts for you, in a sort of order.

I'm still procrastinating woopwoop
Previously I had a bunch of Terminology lists organised for each chapter under the title page but there's been so many terms in one in and barely any in other chapters so I'm gonna reorganize and move them all into one section at the end.
I think i'll use the free space on the title pages for some more drawings now my art tablet is running again. They'd be introductory linework doodle type drawings to the contents of each chapter so give me vibes. Inspire me, babes.
Here's all the chapters I got:
Theory: I basically contextualise different historical aspects of the practitioner community like paganism, wicca, witches and familiars but I'm also including the bad stuff like cultural appropriation, antisemitism and transphobia.
Practical Basics: talk about the history and practical uses of the simple stuff like altars, grimoires, the holidays, deity worship etc.
Practical Magic: talk about the history and practical uses of different types of magic and spellcraft like divination, protection, glamours etc.
Spells and activities: basically recipe guides to a bunch of specific things like witch bottles, cleansing sprays and other stuff.
Recipes: food. That's it. Just food. I like food.
Correspondences: A bunch of lists of different things and their magical meanings like colour, plants, symbols etc.
You can peek at my table of contents and what the actual grimoire pages look like in older posts.

Week Two
Journal Activity - Research superstitions from your culture. Optional: write down ones that you could interoperate into your craft and how.
Mundane Activity - Go outside and find one to five objects that interest you. You must be able to pick the object up and bring it to your home. Make up and write down how you could use this object in your craft. Optional: Write down the different cultural and historical uses for this object if there is any.
Correspondence Activity - Research the moon phases and its correspondences. Optional: Record your energy on the corresponding moon phase, for example "on the full moon I feel pretty tired, so I don't do any big spell work and just take some time to myself and rest."
Journal Activity - Research the basic mechanics of curses and other baneful magic, even if you don't intend on casting any. It is important to be able to recognize it if it happens and to better counteract the working.

I forgot to post it when I made it, but I brought lots of crystals recently (mainly labradorite) so I decided to do a few grimoire pages on them! If I’m able to, I really like to research crystals I’m adding to my collection. I’ll also be posting the video I filmed of the haul! I love to do little drawings / use stickers / ephemera etc in my grimoire that relates to what I’m writing about and please let me know of any other people on here / youtube / tiktok / instagram / snapchat etc that post things like this as I’m always looking for inspiration!
These pages were really fun to do, I drew 2 of the crystals I got and used a variety of glitter gel pens and dabbed my finger on it so there would be shine all over the drawing and some more intense patches of the glitter and shine to be the flashes in the crystals.

February week 1
Energy Work
This next few weeks we are going to be dealing with rather a lot of definitions and new pages. These definitions can either all go on one page so that you have a sort of dictionary of your own within your grimoire, or you can leave the pages separate and have each definition on each separate page.
Lab notebook/ new page- Definition - what is Energy Work? How do we incorporate it into our craft? How does it work?
New page - Visualization- what is visualization? What does it actually mean and how does it work? What is its purpose and how do we do it? How do we practice getting better at it?How does it work and help us within the context of our craft?
New page- Energy Manipulation -start with the basics and work your way deeper into it. How does one sense energies? See them? Feel them? How does one begin to manipulate them? What methods are used?
Monday
Grounding - define grounding within the context of energy work. What is it? How do you do it? What forms are there? What is the purpose of grounding? How does it help us in our craft? What herbs, gems and tools are associated with grounding?
Charging - define charging within the context of energy work. What is it? How do you do it? What forms are there? What is the purpose of it? How does it help us in our craft? What herbs, gems and tools are associated with charging?
Centering - define centering within the context of energy work. What is it? How do you do it? What forms are there? What is the purpose of it? How does it help us in our craft? What herbs, gems and tools are associated with it?
Research- pick another herb off your list! Find out as much information as you can. Mundane and magical, historical too!
Tuesday
Sending, receiving - is it possible to send and receive energy? How is this done? What purposes does this serve? How do we use it in the context of our craft? What associations does it have?
Raising - Define raising energy. How does one raise energy? What is the purpose of raising energy? How do you perform it?
Channeling - Define it. What is energy channeling? How does one do it? What is the purpose? How does it work and help us in the context of our craft? What are some associations for channeling?
Wednesday
Astral work - Define astral work. What is it? How is it done? What are various methods? What is the purpose? What are some things associated with it? What is its history?
Energy fields - Define it. What are energy fields? How do you sense them? Can you manipulate them? How do you sustain them? What sustains them? What do we do with them?
Research - pick another gem or other magical item/ component/ ingredient and research as much as you can about it!
Thursday
Replenishing - How does one replenish their energy? What are the methods you use? When and or how often do you do it?
Sensing - how does one sense another person’s or another source of energy? Are there different methods? Are there tools that can help? What all things can you sense energy in?
Friday
Meditation - what is meditation? There are various philosophies and techniques. If you prescribe to one, which is it? How do you accomplish it? What is the purpose of your meditation or meditation in general? Are there tools that help you meditate?
Auras - what are auras? Define them. What do they look and feel like? How do you sense them? Can you manipulate them?
Dream Work - What is dream work? Lucid dreaming isn’t the only way to work with dreams. What methods of working with dreams are there? Do you journal your dreams? What are dreams, to you?
Phew!!
We made it. That was a lot of definitions this week! The next couple weeks will have a lot of definitions! Along with the normal prompts. Again all of this is just meant to inspire research and creative thinking as well as actually inspire creative decoration ideas and organization for our grimoires! Don’t feel obligated to do it all week by week. The challenge will stay up after the year is over so we can all look back and utilize it!

Grimoire/BoS prompts for the Witch that Doesn't Know What to do Next
Part 4/4
Might revisit this series later on in life, but for now I think I've written down enough stuff. I hope some of my ideas can help!
- In-journal altar spaces. Perfect if you can't have a physical altar, or even for brainstorming ideas. Take pictures/make drawings in order to form the perfect altar space for you!
- Favorite myths, creation stories, etc. You can either list them and talk about why you like them, or you can even go as far as to rewrite them in your book!
- Mundane daily rituals. List some everyday "rituals" you do (ex. brushing your teeth daily), and see if you can find a way to make it feel magical or special.
- Magical Exercises. Especially if you've read a lot of books, you more than likely have encountered a lot of these. Why not record them in their own category so you can use them when you're stumped?
- Meditating Activities. The act of creation can feel meditating, go ahead and put those things in your BoS/Grimoire so you can recall those meditative states. My favorite thing is to tear up scrap papers and collage it in my grimoire.
- YouTube Channels, blogs, etc. frequently visited. Do you notice that you gravitate a lot to specific places in order to get your information? Jot it down! Whenever you're stuck you can always look at your list of trusted places. Likewise, you can go back to them and compare sources in order to broaden your understanding of topics.
