Race in fashion

After the BLM uprising after George Floyds’ death in May 2020. Fashion companies have started to over look on their racial diversity in their companies and on chosen models that are on their runway. However, Even though Fashion companies have started to change, Did it really need a black man to die in the hands of racism and BLM protests occurring, to kickstart change?

Here is a chart of Racial Diversity in the Fashion industry.

The fashion industry has long been called out for cultural appropriation, racist advertising, and its blatant lack of diversity across campaigns, catwalks and behind the lens. But could the recent resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement and heightened social awareness of racial discrimination and underrepresentation, following the US police killing of George Floyd in May, be fashion’s final wake-up call for inclusivity? Perhaps.

Over the years, there have been prominent examples of racially insensitive, or sometimes outright offensive, themes and imagery in fashion, filtering all the way through to final collections. In 2018, H&M’s campaign showcasing a Black boy wearing its ‘Coolest Monkey in the Jungle’ jumper caused controversy, while Gucci was forced to apologise last year for releasing a balaclava design that resembled blackface.

In 2013, Naomi Campbell and Iman called for an end to “runway racism”. Naomi campbell says that she sees less diversity since starting her career in modelling.

The “Diversity Coalition” is a campaign that calls out fashion houses that have little to to no models of colour walking and representing their runway. Luxury brands such as Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Donna karen and Victoria Beckham have all been called out for not having enough black models in their runway shows. Naomi said that there was more racial diversity in 1986 then there is now. Proving that it’s time to make a change in the fashion industry.

Gucci Circolo ‘Gucci’ unveiled its brand new retail-cum-event space, ‘Gucci Circolo’ moments away from ‘Shoreditch House’. ‘Gucci Circolo’ is a primary-hued, GG-monogram-clad David Adjaye designed building spread over two floors. Gucci Circolo ‘Gucci’ has officially opened the doors to ‘Gucci Circolo’ a new pop-up in Shoreditch, East London. Taking over a location designed by Sir David Adjaye, ‘Gucci Circolo’ is an experiential space that takes visitors on a journey through the chapters of the house’s ‘Aria’ collection, which was unveiled earlier this year. The first stage of the space showcases the ‘Gucci 100’ collection, created by Alessandro Michele to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the house. ‘Gucci Circolo’ also features a collaboration with ‘IDEA’ who have curated a bespoke bookstore containing rare fashion, art and photography books. The next stage of the journey celebrates ‘Gucci’s’ links to music, with musicians including Phoebe Bridgers, Celeste, Billie Eilish and Arlo Parks all selecting music for the space. Completing the pop-up is the ‘Gucci Café’ which will act as a hub for London’s creative communities in the future.
