Umbrella Academy, As Described By Me, Someone Who Has Never Watched Umbrella Academy.

I have seen enough Tumblr posts about Umbrella Academy that I have an idea of what's going on there. However, I haven't seen enough to know if that idea of what's going on is anywhere near correct. So, I'm going to type up what I *think* is going on with Umbrella Academy, and you all can tell me how wrong I am. (Though please, don't tell me how I'm wrong, just the extent to which I'm wrong.)

Umbrella Academy starts at the titular academy, which on the surface is just like any other school for supers that are relatively common in fiction nowadays. In truth, Umbrella Academy is horrible and abusive, and a lot of the kids there have some level of trauma. One major character is a kid named after a number, I think either Nine or Eleven. Or maybe there are many number kids? Anyways, 11/9 is either the main character or a recurring antagonist. Or both. Also they may be psychic.

After a while, the kids are taken to a Different Academy that is Better. However, the Trauma of Umbrella Academy still lingers, and Different Academy isn't that much better.

The overarching plot is either to avoid getting noticed by Umbrella Academy and taken back, or to go to Umbrella Academy and combat it for some reason. Also trauma, it cannot be driven home enough how traumatized these kids are.

Also the headmaster of Umbrella Academy is an old guy with graying hair who looks dapper and may or may not have a jar of beans on his desk.

It’s time we accept that Percy Jackson is an unreliable narrator. He’s not dumb. He’s just insecure. He’s not clueless about his and Annabeth’s feelings. He’s just in denial. He’s not clueless about Rachel’s feelings. He just doesn’t want to do anything about them. His mother isn’t perfect. He just loves and respects her more than anyone in the world. I saw somebody say that watching the Percy Jackson show made them realize that in the first books Percy doesn't even say half the stuff he thinks and he's just a quiet kid silently judging everyone, like they're so right.

Think about it from Grover's perspective. You know Percy as a quiet boy who certainly has his judgy thoughts but (aside from telling them to you) keeps them to himself. He's just trying to make it through school, for his mom.

Then his mom dies. And he loses the ability to give absolutely any fucks. He starts saying all this shit he never said out loud and to people who could do infinitely worse things to him than anything Nancy Bobifit ever even tried. And it only gets worse as he gets older.

Like bro went from quiet kid in the back of the class to fist fighting a god in the span of like a week. Then he openly told the gods to pay their child support. Grover was having heart attacks every other minute.

God, I love the art this season so much. Not just because it's fucking gorgeous, (which it is.) But. like. look at this.

First of all. Pretty. Second of all, look at their facial features. Riz's got his dad's ears, but his mom's nose. Sklonda's jawline and Pok's dark brows. This kid is the spitting image of his parents, a perfect combo of the two. Just like Kalina said in Sophomore Year.

for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal

before it was like, "what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?"

and now it's like, "ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it's pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we've normalized this experience"
