Naively, I did not expect shaving my head to be a big deal. I did not know I was about to lose my second summer job answering phones at my dad’s law firm because, as the office manager would explain, clients started asking if I had cancer. I did not intend to launch a flaming arrow into anyone’s highly combustible gender-based worldview. I certainly did not expect to hear “Hey Sinéad” every day for the next two years.

People assumed that I had shaved my head to look like Sinéad O’Connor. I was a huge fan of Sinéad; when I saw her perform in 1990 and she sang only two songs before running off stage, my fascination only increased. When people asked, I insisted that I hadn’t shaved my head to look like Sinéad, but it would be a lie to say that she wasn’t part of the formula. Sinéad provided inspiration, and the discomfort of long hair on a hot day was my motive. All I needed was a big dose of teenage recklessness (check!) and an opportunity.

Rating Ryan's haircuts, I wanna know what your favorite is!

2018 First Man Ryan - 3/10, doesn't look right for his head

la la land era Ryan - will always be a 10/10, the side part/slick back look just suits him so so hard

Patriarchy Ken - 10/10, so hot, yes even with the bleached hair

2023/2024 Ryan - 8/10, I feel like he needs a lot of styling right now and while it's kinda cute and playful on the one hand it's also not my favorite look

2023/2024 Colt Seavers hair - 10/10 though, the only difference to the one before is that it's all in his face but it makes him look so good, that's the main reason I can't wait for the movie. Also I think this is the first time we've ever seen him with this scruffy fluffy look and I'm HERE FOR IT

Holland March The Nice Guys 2016 look - 10/10, his la la look a little longer and wilder but still super hot... and the moustache, don't even get me started🥵

Officer K in Blade Runner 2049 - underrated look fr, only slightly longer than his First Man haircut but it does way more for him, he looked insanely fine in that movie

Gen gets a trim for split ends because Skyloft has a barber, Midna tricks Dusk into going to a groomer (and his hair when he transforms back is amazing), Ocarina has forgotten to get a haircut for seven years and counting, Mask just sorta grabs his hair in one hand and does it himself and then hides the uneven ends under his hat, Wind goes to his Grandma and comes out perfectly coiffed every time, the Four haven't had a haircut since they split and are desperately hoping their hair isn't too hopeless underneath their hats, and Speck's hair is being constantly monitored by Ezlo (who has opinions about the softness and length of hair he's placed upon and has absolutely no qualms about fussing at it with his beak until he's satisfied)

BIRTHDAY HAIRCUT

Let's pretend I'm posting this on February 29th for my own sake. Because this bitch of a drawing was kicking my ass every step of the way and anytime I thought I was done I kept tweaking it. I couldn't stop. Even now I'm fighting the urge.

Anyways, I've been trying to redesign Tyler multiple times and the one feature I could never settle on was his hair. So I thought it would be fun, if as a 'final design reveal' he would get a haircut. There's also something here about both of them being trans now and the intimacy of getting a haircut from your situationship but it's not obvious because all the lore is in my heart. But trust me, it's there.

Is this his final design? Probably not. I think my brain just needs to get used to this and I need practice.
