Halloween is a liturgical holiday. Anyone would be forgiven for not knowing that, because almost nobody keeps it that way anymore—to such a degree that some Catholics are of the opinion that we should wash our hands of the whole business. But Halloween has always belonged properly to the Church, and as such it should be made a key strategic objective in a cultural Reconquista. To help illustrate why, I’d like to walk through the day of October 31st, not as the world celebrates it now, but as the Latin Church celebrated it for centuries, listed in the Martyrology as Vigilia omnium Sanctorum.

A close up of one of my Hallowtide pieces: Jeweled Skeleton Queen (but in my mind she’s a version of Morana) designed by Night Spirit Studio

Hagging out
I started my Samhuinn with buying a house.
Seriously, the offer we put in on a house was accepted, so the early afternoon was a write off.
Starting closer to supper, I started my Samhuinn cider. I have been making a hot cider for Samhuinn for about 20 years. Every year is slightly different, depending on what I have in the house. I feel like it's based on need rather than recipe.
This year I had cider from a local orchard. I added clove and allspice, sliced clementine, and cinnamon.

After letting that simmer a few hours, my partner and I went out to the cemetery to lay offerings on my ancestor's graves.
It was a beautiful night.

We came home, had some cider, and settled in for a movie.
I usually have more planned, but house hunting took up most of my available brainspace for the past few months. But there is nothing wrong with simplicity.

Most things on my altar stay the same but for the Hallowtide, I put a black tablecloth on top of the orange one I put on for Mabon. Of course, there is a pumpkin, some of the countless black feathers I collected this year, and an empty photo frame. It should hold a picture of the person I remember most during this time of year, but I don't have one so the black is a stand-in. I have a few of those cute small cups, great for offerings. Every time I make myself a fresh pot I replace it. Also switched the candle for a graveyard light.
