Went to Hyper Japan yesterday in my Klonoa cosplay with my bestie @runeandmoon (she went as Marin from Link's Awakening). I had a fantastic time and my costume was recognised by way more people than I was expecting. I thought Klonoa might be a little too obscure! I guess the recent remasters helped. 🥰 It was lovely to get a hug from Hello Kitty! The Nemona cosplayer was really nice and I was really psyched to see a Sorey and Mikleo because I loved Tales of Zestiria and thought it wasn't that popular amongst Tales fans.

We went to Pokémon Worlds 2022!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me, @runeandmoon and MDCarterUK went to Pokémon Worlds in London this weekend. I wish I could've gone for longer, but I couldn't get the time off work. We only managed to go to the Pokémon Center on Saturday evening, go again Sunday morning, and then do the Pokémon Go Scavenger Hunt and watch the VGC finals after. There wasn't any exclusive stock left to be had in the Pokémon Center, which was very disappointing, but I still bought a few other things. I had a real blast hanging out with my friends and doing the PoGo hunt, even though I haven't seriously played PoGo in ages. I managed to get nearly all the prizes, though! I got a hug from an excellent Mimikyu cosplayer, which made my day. The VGC finals were incredible and being there in person was such an experience. I'm just sorry it's all over!

Made some Japanese DIY candy kits
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was over @runeandmoon's house this weekend and we made these five Japanese candy kits and had a ton of fun doing it!
Tumblr media
We made Popin' Cookin' Donut, Popin' Cookin' Desserts Party, Popin' Cookin' Fuwa Fuwa Pancake, Meiji Apollo DIY Strawberry Chocolate Kit and Heart Bonsai Tree. Look, there's me making the donuts! I think they came out pretty good.
Tumblr media
Here's the mini donuts. They're super cute, aren't they? Everything is made from a powder mix that you just add water to. You get two kinds of dough (custard flavour and chocolate flavour) and three kinds of icing (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry), as well as hundreds and thousands [sprinkles] and crunchy bits. They don't need any baking, so the texture is kind of strange, but they have quite a nice subtle flavour. The icing is very, very sweet. Decorating them was a delicate operation as the donuts are so small and fragile, but this was one of the kits I enjoyed making the most.
Tumblr media
This is the dessert party set. This one, like before, was mostly powders you mix with water, though you also get two biscuits [cookies] to decorate. There's a lot of parts to this one: the afformentioned biscuits, as well as jelly [jello] in four flavours (orange, strawberry, melon and blueberry) vanilla sponge cake and cream icing. The jelly took about 10 minutes to set and the cake needed to be cooked in the microwave, though that only takes about 30 seconds. The jelly is really nice (tastes a bit like Fruit Pastilles), as is the icing, but the cake is a bit bland and smells very weird when it's cooking. This was really fun to make, too, and everything looks so pretty!
Tumblr media
Oh, these were super easy to make! They were just powder mixes and water for the cake (chocolate and vanilla) and 30 seconds in the microwave, and then the icing (chocolate) was another powder mix with water. Despite being so simple, decorating them was so fun and just look at them! CUTE! We had a ton of icing left over from the donut kit, so we added some vanilla and strawberry icing for extra details. I made the panda and Kay made the bunny. Which do you like the best?
Tumblr media
Here's all the cakes and desserts together, minus the couple that we ate!
Tumblr media
The Meiji Apollo kit was another really easy one. After warming up the three tubes of chocolate, white chocolate and strawberry, it was then up to us to decide how to use them in the provided moulds. You're also given little candy balls to add to them, and we had tons of the decorations left over from the donuts, so I also used some of them. We filled every part of the mould, even the tiny little indents that were clearly not meant to be used and were just designs on the plastic. Those are the tiny, tiny bits you can see. Can you blame us for wanting to use ALL the chocolate? I particularly like the marble-effect one Kay made.
Tumblr media
This was the one Kay was the most excited about making, the mini bonsai tree. This one took a lot longer to make than the others and was a little bit on the fiddly side, but the end product is impressive, isn't it? The trunk and branches are made from modelling chocolate, which had to be placed inside moulds, that then went in the freezer for two 30 minute periods to chill. The leaves are actually vanilla sponge cake, a powder mix added to water and then cooked in the microwave for 30 seconds. There was a lot more cake and chocolate in the kit than you actually needed, but it's always better to have too much than too little, right?
Tumblr media
Here we are divvying up who gets to keep what when I went home. We weren't sure how to share the tree, so I ended up taking it. I'm going to have a lot of sweet treats to snack on!

My bestie over @runeandmoon made this lovely design for my island, Dalimoor, because it’s twinned with her island, RuneTown. Isn’t it pretty? I love that she put pink and blue flowers on it, because my island’s theme colour is blue and hers is pink.

So I went to the Pokémon Center
Yesterday me and my bestie @runeandmoon made the journey to the pop-up Pokémon Center in London. It was one heck of an emotional journey, but it was so worth it in the end. Because of how far away we live from London, and the horror stories about the queues, we had to set off at 5AM!
Tumblr media
Blurry car selfie because I couldn’t hold the phone straight when we were moving, but hey. I don’t think we look bad for that time of the morning!
Tumblr media
The time was 8:48 AM. We joined the queue, absolutely stunned that we’d got there before it had started snaking outside the shopping centre. But since the shop didn’t open till 12 PM, were in for a long wait.
Tumblr media
Tragedy! Somewhere on the Tube, the Z-Crystal on my Mimikyu ita bag had got broken. How annoying! I had to bring my ita bag, though. I am the Mimikyu Superfan. I only really wanted the giant Mimikyu plush from the Pokémon Center. Would I get my prize? Only time would tell!
Tumblr media
Queuing was boring, but we had some great conversations with cool people in the line in front of us. These two dudes were awesome people. Thanks for making the unbearable wait less unbearable, guys!
Tumblr media
The girl and guy here were also pretty awesome. Especially when we started to edge forward ever so slightly and it got more and more busy. The queue was closed off at 11:31 AM, a full half hour before the shop even opened. I was glad we got in before that happened!
It was around here that some guy got caught queue-jumping and was thrown out by security. Wild. All in all, the security were all pretty cool, even though they were very keen to pack us in as tightly as possible. Every time the tiniest gap opened up in front, they’d hurry us forward. One guy was like ‘c’mon, move up. Don’t you want to get into the shop?’ Too soon.
Tumblr media
The first appearance of Dapper Pikachu! I wasn’t near enough to get a proper photo. :(
Tumblr media
There it is! The legends were true. The first glimpse of the Pokémon Center. It’s there, waaaaay in the back of the photo, You have to squint to see it, but it’s there!
youtube
Dapper Pikachu came out again. I still wasn’t in the right place to film or photograph him properly. But check out the guy desperate for a hug! As we were getting closer to the Pokémon Center itself, we needed all the joy we could get. The tweets were coming in thick and fast of everything that they were selling out of. London Pikachu crest pins sold out within the first 20 minutes of trade. Keeping my hopes up for my Mimikyu...
Tumblr media
Playing Pogo kept me entertained for the majority of the queuing. During the wait, I got enough coins to buy the new Mimikyu backpack which I had to own.
Tumblr media
@runeandmoon was playing Pogo to pass the time, too, and got this cutie for her trouble. Lucky!
Tumblr media
The final furlong! 3:19 PM. Just shy of seven hours later, we’d made it.
Tumblr media
We did it! We got inside! There was still a lot of stock, but the lion’s share of the exclusive stuff had already gone. No Londonchu hoodies, socks, plushies or pins. Shelves and shelves of Ludicolo, though. Who even wants Ludicolo? We did overhear a small boy being absolutely thrilled they had Alakazam plushies, though, which was really sweet. Every Pokémon must be someone’s fav.
But to my absolute dismay, there were no giant Mimikyu plushes left on the shelf. The only ones were already in other peoples’ baskets, waiting to be purchased. The staff said they had no more. I was devastated.
Tumblr media
I’m smiling, but I’m about to cry here. It’s crazy, but I’d been up since 4:30 AM, queued for an ungodly amount of time and seeing other people with the one thing I wanted and couldn’t have was just too much.
But then. A miracle happened. Just as I was queuing to pay, a member of staff came out of a side door. They’d just had a delivery...
Tumblr media
MY CHILD.
I absolutely bolted out of the till queue, elbowed past the people standing around the shelf that was being re-stocked and was like ‘I’M SORRY I NEED this’. I took one from the staff member and marched back to the till with my prize held high, shouting ‘WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER’ because I was so sleep-deprived and a little bit insane at this point. But look how happy I am!
The staff in the store were all really friendly and doing their absolute best to make people happy. When I initially asked about Mimikyu stock, the guy who said they had none seemed genuinely gutted I’d missed out on my chosen item. The lady who eventually served me on the till was particularly sweet and clearly loved her job. Everyone was clearly trying their best and I’m not sure how they could have done anything better with the way things have been set up. The people working there can’t control the stock deliveries or do much more to deal with the huge, huge demand. The only thing they could do is put a time limit on how long you’re allowed to browse in the store, but I suppose that would be hard to police.
Tumblr media
The rest of my swag! Since a lot of the Dapper Pikachu stuff had sold out I had to get other things from what I initially wanted. I did want a crest pin for myself and a plush for a friend who had missed out on when he went, but neither were there. The only had one size left of these shirts, too. I hope it fits!
Tumblr media
#TeamScorbunny.
Tumblr media
How could I not? Scorbunny is super duper cute.
Was it worth it? Yes. It’s really weird how I don’t feel frustrated or upset about how long I queued. I did get a little bored, but not as much as I thought I would. I’m super happy I got my Mimikyu, so I guess that made it all worth it. Would do it again? Not this particular shop during the rest of its run, but a similar one in the future, sure. Because I’m apparently insane. I’d probably book a hotel the night before so I could go queue extra-extra early.
For anyone planning on going, I have some tips:
Get there as early as you can. The queue closes off well before the shop’s official closing time, often even before the shop opens. Unless you’re starting to queue at like 1 AM and you’re first in line, you’re generally looking at at least a six hour wait to get in. Basically, if you can’t get there early to mid-morning, don’t even bother.
Go with a friend. Company makes the wait so much better. Also, chat with the people in the queue around you. They’re stuck in the same situation, they’re Pokémon fans too and are probably cool people with interesting stories.
If you need the toilet, there ones near the queuing area. If you let security know, you’re able to leave the line to use the facilities. It’s even easier if you have the aforementioned friend to more easily keep your spot in line.
Bring snacks and drinks. It’s a long wait. You can slip out of the line to buy things, but the less you have to leave the line, the better. If it moves forward when you’re not in it, it’s easy to lose track of where you were.
Bring something to keep you entertained. Games console, phone, book, whatever. Again, it’s a long wait.
Watch the Twitter feed for the shop - they give a running update on stock levels, whether the queue is still open, etc.
And that was my crazy PokéCen adventure! Now I’m going to sleep for the next 3000 years.

Had a great time at HYPER JAPAN yesterday I dressed as a Team Rocket Grunt and was called a monster several times because of the severed Slowpoke tail I was carrying around, but I think they were just jealous ‘cos of how valuable they are... >:3 I met up with a bunch of other Rocket members who were pretty cool guys and we had a fun in-character conversation. I bought a lot of really pretty things from the artists there and got to play Link’s Awakening and Pokémon Shield early. One of the staff at the Pokémon booth liked my cosplay for being on point.
I went with my bestie runeandmoon. Her look was ‘Team Plasma’s Day Off’, but she had a really cute N-themed itabag which I’m hoping she’ll post a picture of on her blog.
We had to take a photo of the guy with the amazing Pokémon TCG costume. What a legend.

Me and my pal Kay are RP buddies. I don’t draw a lot, because I’m shit, but ever since we wrote this scene I’ve wanted to draw it. On the right is my character Daimonion (Dai), and her character Parody (P) is on the left. They have known each other for years, and have run the gamut of being deadly rivals to lovers. Now, they are the BFFs to end all BFFs and I just love the pair of them ;w;

And the results of the First Official Termina Horse-Off are in
Further to fulfilling the Fierce Deity’s dream of riding a smoll horse, I decided to see what happens when you put the other forms of Link on Epona. Can they ride Epona? The Fierce Deity didn’t work out so well, after all.
Let’s find out together in the First Official Termina Horse-Off with my guest judge, Kayru, from over @runeandmoon ! Kayru: Ohh, good luck! Don't kill her!
Tumblr media
First up is Deku Link. He’s so small, he initially sort of sinks into Epona. Kayru: He was already having a bad day, and now this.
Tumblr media
But you can right his position, and he actually rides her properly! Kayru: Aww!
Tumblr media
He has all the correct animations and sound bites. Bless him, all he needed was a stepladder to get up on Epona! Kayru: I’m glad he can ride the horse, though. Deku Link deserves a break from being so small and flammable.
Okay, so that would appear to tip the scales in Deku Link’s favour for now. Let’s see how Zora and Goron Link score.
Tumblr media
Zora Link has the same problem as FD Link. You can either stand...
Tumblr media
...Or if you want to sit, it’s floatin' time. Kayru: Lmao that second picture. He looks so confused! Zora Link: What am I DOING?? Kayru: In the 3DS version - no one fucking knows, it’s uncontrollable.
Tumblr media
Actually, that’s not entirely fair. Since I did my FD joyride, I’ve found you can improve the positioning of the larger forms of Link. Here’s Zora Link properly seated:
Tumblr media
...Sort of. He kind of wedges Epona between his boots. Interestingly, as with Deku Link (and Fierce Deity Link for that matter), Zora Link still has the correct animations and voice clips for riding Epona. You can make him smack her to speed up, and he pets her mane when left idle.
Tumblr media
Here’s FD Link ‘properly’ aligned, to give him his due. Since he’s pretty much the same model as Zora Link, it’s the same problem. Epona’s stuck between his ankles.
And next, Goron Link. The others have really tried, but somehow, I don’t think anyone’s going to beat Deku Link at this point. Kayru: I think Deku Link really will win this one. I think it's just gonna be like: Epona: x____x Goron Link: *Sad Goron noise.*
Tumblr media
Again, like the other large characters, Goron Link initally stands on... or in Epona.
Kayru: That one, it’s like: Goron Link: ???? Epona: fml
Tumblr media
When you make him sit, he floats above Epona like the other bigguns, but somehow looks less ridiculous than the others.
Tumblr media
If I apply the same fix to try correct his position, it looks a little something like this:
Tumblr media
Hey! Actually, that’s not bad at all! But just so we’re all on the same page here, what does Deku Link look like with the positional fix?
Tumblr media
Hahaha, oh my god. The reverse happens. His stance gets worse. Kayru: Think like the horse. Be the horse.
Tumblr media
As an addendum, before you make them sit down, all the characters can be ‘broken free’ of Epona, allowing you to control Epona semi-independently of Link.
Tumblr media
See ya, loser. I’m gonna save Termina on my own!
Okay, time for the contest results! Taking everything into account...
Kayru:  I think Goron Link should get second place, 'cos he looks the most like he's actually on the horse.  Out of the larger Links, he does. That’s fair. Kayru: Zora Link and the Fierce Deity are so similar, I would rather call a joint third.
I agree! So that means... Kayru: In the First Official Termina Horse-Off, I think we can safely declare Deku Link the winner! Hooray! Well done, Deku Link! Kayru: First, and maybe only.

Sailor Moon Crystal Review: An Outsider's Perspective
Tumblr media
After the break is my Sailor Moon Crystal review. I’ve tried to keep it free of spoilers, but there’s some very light, vague allusions to things that happened, so I decided to play it safe. Anyway, I’m probably the only person in the world who didn’t know the story of Sailor Moon, but still. Ya never know.
I have a guilty pleasure, and the name of that is magical girl. For years, I told everyone – and myself – that I didn’t like magical girl anime. Sure, I appreciated the ones that did something a little different with the genre. I enjoyed Revolutionary Girl Utena, for the most part, and Puella Magi Madoka Magika remains one of my favourite anime to date. But for the series that played the tropes straight, they just weren’t for me, and is there any magical girl franchise that gets trope-straightier than Sailor Moon? I’d never seen Sailor Moon, outside of one or two out of context episodes of the 90s anime. I’d never read the manga, aside from the first few pages. I hadn’t seen any of the musicals or the live action adaptation. I was a Sailor Moon virgin. All I knew about the series were the things that had been absorbed into the zeitgeist. Teenage girl meets talking cat, becomes transforming heroine, has to save world. Yada yada. Nope. Definitely not for me.
Enter my best friend, unashamed fan of all things magical girl and card-carrying ‘Moonie’. (Moony? What even is the fandom name for you people?) Over the years I’ve endured her telling me all about the franchise, its merits, its shortcomings, its weirdness and I’ve smiled politely and pretended not to be interested. Part of me was interested, though I was too proud to admit it. What I had no time for was having to sit through a sprawling mess of an anime with hundreds of episodes, lousy dubbing and filler, endless filler. The manga wasn’t an option either, because I find sequential art difficult to read. Imagine her joy when Sailor Moon Crystal was announced, a new anime adaptation of the manga with a stricter adherence to the plot. Now I had no excuse. I said I’d watch it for her, because it’s about time I indulged something she likes. Goodness knows I’ve been subjecting her to endless details about video games she doesn’t give a fig about for far too long. But really, it was for me. I’d been hiding in the closet too long. It’s time to come out wearing ribbons and a short skirt.
I suppose being new to the franchise gives me a unique perspective on Crystal. I don’t have any ‘canon baggage’ as my friend so lovingly puts it. Having watched the whole of the Dark Kingdom Arc, it surprised me how much I enjoyed it. To me, Sailor Moon Crystal wasn’t a magical girl series, it was a love story. It was a love story between Usagi and Mamoru, of course, but also Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion; Princess Serenity and her Guardians; Usagi and her friends; Prince Endymion and his Knights; and the tragic, unrequited love between Queen Beryl and Prince Endymion. It was the love story that kept me hooked, not the twirling around and magic sticks. That’s how I’m justifying watching the magical girl when I supposedly don’t like the genre, I suppose. I’m not too big to admit certain scenes had me in tears.Kotono Mitsuishi’s emotional, believable performance had a big part in that. Usagi and Mamoru’s relationship maybe could have done without the tired old cliché of having them hate each other to begin with, but I can’t complain too much. I’ll never get enough of seeing Mamoru hit in the face by things, and Usagi griping about how he’s a massive jerk was very cute.
What I appreciated about the arc the most was its pacing. As I alluded to earlier, I cannot stand pointless filler and repeated footage makes me grind my teeth. You bet I was fast-forwarding through Utena climbing those damn stairs each time. Crystal seemed to hit the balance just right. Aside from the transformation sequences every episode – par for the course for the genre, though – the pacing was perfectly tight. It dribbled me just enough information each episode to keep me interested (and bug my friend for answers to questions that were forthcoming in later episodes). My only concern was with Act 4, Masquerade. Usagi and the gang hear about something they think might be the Silver Crystal, they go after it, oh no, it was a red herring after all. I was painfully reminded of the Clair Bible thing in Slayers NEXT, and was afraid more episodes would follow in a similar vein, and was most pleasantly surprised when they didn’t.  The sole time I did wish they stopped to let the story breathe a little was right at the end, when the Dark Kingdom Arc gave way to the Black Moon Arc, but at least it gave us a cliffhanger ending.
The whole arc was full of surprises for me. Usagi, upbeat, cheery, overwhelmingly nice, is often a character archetype I loathe with a passion. Sora from Kingdom Hearts comes to mind. ‘This ship runs on happy faces!’ Ugghhh. Usagi also had the added disadvantage of being female. I usually give female characters a harder time because of my inherent hatred of my own gender, or more likely because they’re so often poorly portrayed in fiction. I found it impossible to hate Usagi, though. She was just a good character, in both meanings of the word. Nice, but not insufferable. Not perfect, but willing to give everything to help the people she loves. Again, Mitsuishi’s voice work had a lot to do with endearing me to Usagi.
On the whole, the support cast were characters I found myself liking as well. Normally with teams, there’s one or two characters you don’t care for, but not the case here. Ami could have been stuck-up, but she wasn’t. Rei could have been standoffish, but she wasn’t. Makoto ended up being my favourite of the Sailor Guardians because I think she had the best introductory episode, telling you so much about the character in such a short time. My only disappointment was with Minako; I felt we knew comparatively little about her by the end of the series, as by the time she was introduced, the plot was in full swing and there was little time to develop her. Even the bad guys were interesting characters. The Four Heavenly Kings had a really satisfying arc that redeemed them and Beryl’s backstory gave her believable motivations. Queen Metallia, not so much, but I let deep character subtleties slide when you’re an amorphous cloud of evil.
I’ve heard that other people dislike the art of Sailor Moon Crystal and there have been complaints about off-model jankiness. If I’m honest, I never noticed any when I was watching it. I only did when I was linked to an article with screencaps, and I think other people would only notice if they were looking out for these things or watching on a frame-by-frame basis. I thought the art was rather lovely to look at. All of the characters had attractive designs, if a little matchsticky. I liked how the Guardians’ attacks were redrawn each time, so I didn’t have to watch too much recycled footage. My only issues were minor aesthetic things. I didn’t like the 3D used during the transformation sequences, because it sticks out so much against the 2D art used in the rest of the show. I didn’t like how Usagi had her mouth open like she was trying to catch flies in so many scenes in early episodes. The music, on the other hand, I entirely dismissed. The choral chanting during transformations was epic enough, but generally I didn’t notice the music at all. It served its purpose. The opening and ending themes were rather by-the-numbers anime songs. The opening theme reminds me of two different songs, and the ending theme could be swapped out to a dozen different shows and no one would bat an eyelid.
What did my journey into the rabbit hole of sparkles and henshin phrases teach me? That I actually do like magical girl? Yes, perhaps. It’s more of the fact that I like shows that respect its audience’s time, have an engaging plot and likeable characters. Sailor Moon Crystal did and if more series in the genre were like this, and less formula-driven, monster-of-the-day, cut-and-paste trash, I’d be less cagey about admitting my like of them. Would I recommend this show? That’s a difficult question. I enjoyed it for what it was. It wasn’t the worst show I’ve seen, but it’s not the best. If you like love stories with girls with super powers, sure, you’ll love this. If you want a show that really challenges the genre tropes, this isn’t it. There’s a lot to swallow as for how things work in their universe, as well. There were a number of things that happened and I wanted a rational explanation for why or how and the answer was pretty much ‘because love’. I suppose that’s what’s keeping me from going all out and saying Crystal is a great show. It has got me more interested in the franchise as a whole, though, and I’m going back and looking at the other adaptations I’ve passed over in the past. It had to be doing something right, then. Most importantly, it’s taught me that it’s okay to like short skirts and ribbons.

DC: 'Lance has... issues'
Context for this one: in our comic/RP universe, the Blackthorn family have a history of mental instability, not helped by marriages often being arranged between cousins to ensure the Power of Dragons runs strong in the bloodline. Also, Lance likes pretzels.
Lance: Lance thinks you guys should have moar pretzels. Dan: Don't look at us. Your gramps ate em all. Lance: That bastard! Lance is not impressed! Kayru: Lol at family meet ups, Lance wouldn't get the cheek pinching. Instead, Drake would be like 'Yarrgh, are ya still taking yer medication, boy?'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Renza: Watching Lance eat is probably akin to watching a lion savaging a zebra carcass. Kayru: Messy and there's always bits everywhere and more ends up on his face than actually in his mouth? Renza: Yes, and those spiky teeth dont help. Kayru: Either that, or paradoxically, he's INCREDIBLY civilised. Renza: I doubt that. I can imagine him destroying Tokyo.
