The dynamic fusion of painting modern art with interior design brings out an exceptional elegance to contemporary decor. Creating A Visual Impact: Incorporating Modern Paintings In Contemporary Decor
Incorporating modern paintings in contemporary decor adds not only a sense of artistic touch but also creates a stunning visual impact. Explore how integrating modern paintings can breathe life into your contemporary decor and reflect your style.
1. Paint And Palette: Choosing The Right Colours For Your Art Display
Warm colours such as red, orange, and yellow can evoke feelings of happiness or anger, while cool colours like blue, green, and purple can evoke calm or sadness. A painting modern art with a sunset may benefit from warm, bold colours while a seascape might work best with soothing blues and greens.
Pay attention to the balance and contrast between colours. If you want something to stand out, contrast it with its complementary colour. For example, if you are painting a tree, using dark greens against light blues or paintings such as Luminous Oasis Resin Art Painting that can make the wall paintings for home stand out.
2. Centric Concept: Building A Theme Around Modern Art
A common characteristic of wall paintings for home is the use of geometric patterns. A great example is where squares and rectangles are arranged in an asymmetric balance. This could be replicated in design concepts or architecture.
A commercial using paintings for living room styles and themes, such as abstract expressionism or pop art, can give an edgy, innovative look.
3. Abstract Art: Making A Bold Statement In Modern Decor
Instead of placing traditional landscape wall paintings for home as items for room decoration, why not hang a vivid piece of paintings abstract art that features colourful triangles, circles, or hexagons? Paintings such as The Royal Blue Thames Abstract 100% Hand Painted Wall Painting (With Outer Floater Frame) instantly transform the room into a modern space and act as an impressive conversation starter.
Play with the idea of negative space in your paintings for living room. Use the absence of colour or a subject to make your focal point stand out. For instance, a red circle on a blank white oil painting can instantly draw the viewer’s eye.
4. Aesthetics And Exhibits: Constructing A Gallery Wall
Measure your wall and using a design app, software or paper, plot out where each painting for living room will hang, taking into consideration the shape and size of each artwork.
Do not forget about the space between oil paintings. A common thumb rule is to keep about 2-3 inches between larger paintings such as Mystical Moment 100% Hand Painted Wall Painting (With outer Floater Frame), and 1.5-2.5 inches for smaller pieces. This helps each piece to stand out on its own.
5. Illumination Integration: Blending Art And Lighting In Modern Decor
Consider installing wall lights around your artwork as items for room decoration. This can be as simple as track lighting or spotlights directed towards the art, or more elaborate like integrating LEDs directly into the piece’s frame.
When mirrors are used together with artwork, it not only amplifies the artwork but also multiplies the lighting effect uniquely and dramatically.
Emerging Artistic Evolution: Trends In Modern Painting
Modern painting is undergoing a revolutionary shift as contemporary artists push boundaries and experiment with new techniques. These bold explorations are redefining artistic standards, giving rise to fresh trends in modern painting. Listed below are the evolving modern painting trends and how they are influencing the modern artistic landscape.
1. Hyperrealism: Redefining Modern Art Aesthetics
Hyperrealism is a modern art trend that seeks to create paintings or sculptures that mimic reality to a degree that they often appear clearer than photos. Using high-resolution cameras and digital images for guidance, artists employ painstaking detail, vibrant colours, and layered techniques to achieve lifelike effects. This unique genre blends precise technical skills with conceptual depth, presenting a sharp commentary on the nature of reality and perception such as Amalfi Coast Framed Canvas Print.
2. Graffiti Revolution: Street Art And Its Place In Contemporary Decor
The graffiti revolution trend brings street art into contemporary décor. Street art, previously confined to public spaces, is now increasingly popular in home and office designs. This art trend blends modern aesthetics with edgy graffiti designs. Featuring vibrant colours, bold strokes, and often politically charged themes, graffiti-style artwork makes a powerful statement. It provides a way for individuals to express their identity, making their spaces uniquely theirs while adding an urban edge to the interior décor with paintings such as Streets of Manhattan Hand-painted Wall Art (With Outer Floater Frame).
3. Beyond Imagination: The Power Of Conceptual Art In Modern Decor
Conceptual art focuses on ideas and intellectual content, as it subverts the traditional understanding of art, pushing the boundaries of imagination. It has grown increasingly popular in modern décor due to its abstract aesthetic and unique ability to provoke thought. Bold use of colours, asymmetric designs and innovative textures are notable trends in this genre. Whether it is sculptures, paintings, or installations, conceptual art infuses modern décor with a distinct edge and sophistication, while stimulating critical thinking.
4. Mother Nature’s Canvas: Exploring The Rise Of Eco Art
Eco-art is a contemporary trend involving the integration of natural elements within artistic creation, gaining popularity as environmental consciousness grows. Artists utilize materials like soil, plants, and recycled materials to emphasize the beauty and fragility of canvas paintings. Some incorporate climate change themes or promote sustainability through their work. It challenges conventional gallery aesthetics, often existing outside in the environment, where elements like weather continually reshape the piece.
5. Illuminating Creations: Neon Art Spectacle
Neon art represents a trend in modern art featuring vibrant neon lights. Artists sculpt dazzling, illuminated structures to evoke specific emotions, deliver powerful messages or express artistic views. The distinctive glow and hue of neon create immersive environments, pushing the boundaries of creativity and conventional visual aesthetics.
Modern paintings significantly impact contemporary decor by introducing vibrant aesthetics, versatility, and uniqueness. They influence design elements, personalizing spaces and acting as central pieces that shape the colour palette and overall ambience of rooms.

Colour Psychology in Interior Design: Choosing the Right Palette for Your Space
When it comes to designing the interior of your home, the colour palette you choose can profoundly impact the overall ambience and atmosphere. Colour isn't just about aesthetics; it also influences our emotions, moods, and behaviour. This is where colour psychology in interior design comes into play – the art and science of selecting colours that resonate with your personality, needs, and the purpose of the space. In this blog, we'll explore how to choose the right colour palette for your home based on colour psychology principles.
The Power of Warm and Cool Colours
Warm colours like reds, oranges, and yellows evoke warmth, energy, and excitement. They are often used in spaces where socialisation and stimulation are desired, such as dining or living rooms. However, excessive use of warm colours can be overwhelming, so balancing them with cooler tones is essential.
Cool colours like blues, greens, and purples are calming and soothing. They are often used in bedrooms, bathrooms, or areas where relaxation is essential. Cool colours can make a space feel more open and airy.
Choosing the Right Colours for Different Rooms
1.Living Room: For a welcoming and vibrant living room, consider earthy tones like warm browns, rich oranges, and deep reds. These colours promote conversation and energy and are ideal for those looking for apartments on a 200ft radial road.
2. Bedroom:  Create a tranquil and restful bedroom using cool colours like soft blues, calming greens, or lavender. These colours promote relaxation and better sleep and are perfect for Flats for sale in Kovilambakkam.
3. Kitchen: Kitchens can benefit from warm, appetising colours like reds, yellows, and oranges. These shades stimulate appetite and conversation.
4. Home Office: Choose neutral colours like whites, greys, or light blues to boost productivity and concentration. These colours help maintain focus and are suitable for a workspace in TVS Emerald Kovilambakkam.
5. Bathroom: Choose serene colours like soft blues, greens, or neutral tones for a spa-like atmosphere. These colours promote relaxation and cleanliness.
Personal Preferences Matter
While colour psychology provides valuable guidance, it's important to remember that personal preferences play a significant role. A colour that evokes positive emotions for one person may not have the same effect on another. Before finalising your colour palette, consider what makes you feel comfortable and happy in your home.
In conclusion, colour psychology is a powerful tool in interior design. By understanding the psychological impact of colours, you can create beautiful spaces that make you feel comfortable and aligned with your desired emotions and activities. So, when you embark on your next interior design project, consider the psychology of colour and let it guide you toward a space that genuinely resonates with your lifestyle. If you're searching for apartments in 200ft radial road or Flats for sale in Kovilambakkam, consider these principles to create a space that truly feels like home.

By carefully selecting colors that align with the desired mood and function of each room, you can create a space that enhances your well-being and complements your personal style. Remember that color is a versatile tool, and with the right choices, you can make your home a reflection of your unique personality and preferences.

CHAPTER 3: Without Armor
RATING: Explicit (18+ ONLY!!!)
WARNINGS: sexual content, violence
SUMMARY: “You’re an excellent leader. Tell me what to do.”
“Nova—”
“Prove it,” she whispers, her voice barely air. Her blood is pumping so heavily in her ears that her own words sound distorted, like they’re under a waterfall. “Show me you’re a good leader. Because I believe you are, but I know you have to prove it to believe it.”
“This isn’t what this place was made for.”
Nova stops, her forehead pressed against his. Everything in this strange arena is quiet except for their breathing, an urgent pulsing in the cold, dark night. “So fighting is sacred to Mandalorians,” she breathes, feeling the airlocks that keep Din’s helmet secure around his face hiss. He doesn’t move, letting her lift off his helmet, to have him without his armor. “You’re sacred to me. Every inch of you.”
If you're a newcomer, my fic "Something More" is the first installment of this story! <3
AUTHOR’S NOTE: hello hello my friends!!! this is where i offer a deep, massive apology for Chapter 3 coming out a week later than it was supposed to. i was traveling to visit my best friend who lives states away, then my family had a slew of emergencies and crises, then i was too drained with a flareup of pain to write a single word. writing SD is literally my happy place, and being forced to take an unplanned break was painful and hard. this chapter isn't as long as i wanted it to be (i'm so sorry for that as well!!!) but i think it's as fleshed out as i can get it, because, as usual, Big Things Are Coming. thank you so so much for being patient with me in my hasty, largely unexplained absence, and i hope you LOVE this week's chapter!! <3
*
Hoth really shouldn’t feel warm and welcoming. The climate is horrible, temperatures that drop to dangerous lows, the ice that breaks and shifts and opens into the gaping maw of the planet’s icy interior. It’s a wasteland, white-blind and horrible, but the small Rebel base located in the heart of the planet is enough to keep Nova’s heart anchored here, even when she’s parsecs away.
Landing Kicker isn’t an issue. The second they descend onto the landing pad, a small crew of the mechanics Nova spent most of her brief stint here with racing towards the underbelly. Nova waves at them, pointing over the noise at the makeshift patch on the mainline of fuel, and they nod, enclosing on the issue in a matter of seconds.
Din’s tense. Nova’s eyes roam over the silhouette of his impressive, taut body, knowing that most of what’s underneath the beskar is in fighting mode, ready to expel energy like a hurricane whenever he faces the opposition. He tilts the visor over at her, and Nova offers a tiny smile, her heart kicking an arrhythmic beat against her chest. She’s trying her best to not look relieved that she’s here and not on Mandalore, but she knows she’s a horrible liar and that her body is full of betrayal. When the airlock doors hiss open and the two of them are beckoned into the insulated hollow of the Rebel base, Wedge is there waiting. Behind him, like a silent sentinel, stands Bo-Katan, her owl-painted blue helmet obscuring the expression on her face.
“Rebel girl,” Wedge calls, and something cold in Nova’s heart thaws. His arms are strong and purposeful, and he envelops Din’s hand with that same warmth and vigor, nodding at him. Bo-Katan doesn’t move an inch, her pristine hands folded behind her back, every muscle in her body the same kind of tight and purposeful as Din’s are, Mandalorian strong. “Welcome back.”
“It’s—” Nova inhales, eyes flicking, uncertain, over at Bo-Katan, “good…to be back. I wish it was under better circumstances, but—”
“You’re Andromeda Maluev,” Bo-Katan interrupts, and the mention of her old name sends a spike straight through Nova’s chest, puncturing on scar tissue that’s never fully healed. “Aren’t you?”
Nova swallows, running her tongue over her bottom lip. “I was,” she answers, finally, voice far away and small. “Why do you ask?”
Bo-Katan gestures with her head, a tiny movement, and then she’s turning on her beskar heel to move towards the war room. Silently, Nova and Din follow behind her and Wedge, Nova’s heart still hammering, erratic. The space is smaller than the giant one on Mandalore, but because it’s empty except for the four of them, it seems massive. Dangerous. Lonely.
Nova steps up to the holotable, twisting her tongue behind her teeth, trying to remain calm. The mention of her old name, twice in less than a week, feels like shrapnel. It reminds her of everything she’s been running from for a decade—her parents’ deaths, Jacterr Calican, the Empire, the resurrected evil in the First Order—and it sits sourly in her stomach as Bo-Katan presses buttons on the holotable. When the image of Nova comes up—so much younger than she feels now, dark hair long against her back, her features glitched and glittering in the hologram projected towards the ceiling—she winces at it. Beneath her portrait, her name is written in Basic: ANDROMEDA MALUEV. AGE: 26. CRIMES: EVADING CAPTURE, MURDER, AIDING AND ABETTING CRIMINALS. It’s bold and terrifying and Nova can’t look away. The word MURDER, screaming at her in capital letters, is too much to bear. She swallows, throat dry, blood rushing in her ears. It’s such a dangerous, horrible thing that it takes Nova a minute to read anything beneath the portrait of a girl she hasn’t been in years, but when she finally gets past the roadblock—MURDER, MURDER, MURDER—she sees a price on her head.
“Five million credits?” she asks, her voice rocketing through three octaves in her disbelief. The word credits cracks down the middle, incredulous. She presses a hand to her mouth, flattening her fingers flush against her face, trying to steady herself. “Why—why is the bounty so high?”
“That’s not from the First Order,” Wedge starts, gently, but he’s interrupted by Bo-Katan’s knife of an arm, cutting up between him and Nova. She jabs a long, gloved finger at the script underneath Nova’s image and her bounty, and Nova blinks hard, trying to get her brain to focus on what the words say.
“Novalise,” Bo-Katan says, her voice clipped, “you’re wanted alive or dead. Do you see that?” She enunciates her point with her finger again, stabbing it on the shimmering blue words reflected in front of them. “This is from the fucking Guild.”
“Easy,” Din cuts in, the word hard in the air. He steps forward, knocking Bo-Katan’s angry hand out of where it’s shaking in Nova’s face. “Take it the fuck down, Bo-Katan, or I will do it for you.”
“The—Guild?” Nova asks, trying to make all of the moving parts fit right in her brain. “I—I don’t understand. The Bounty Hunters’ Guild? The one that Greef Karga runs? I—I’m wanted? Why?”
“You’re not,” Din interrupts, his voice clipped and intense. Nova shuffles to the side as Din steps towards the holotable, magnifying the strange text. “It’s not Karga’s Guild. And you,” he adds, shoulders tossed back, facing Bo-Katan, “had no right to yell at her with those theatrics. Save that for the enemy.”
Nova can’t see Bo-Katan’s face, hidden under the blue beskar of her helmet, but she knows that Bo-Katan is glaring daggers at the both of them. Nova swallows again, trying to keep her heart rate steady, her racing mind calm, but she just keeps seeing the word MURDER flash before her eyes. Din’s saying something else, and she can’t concentrate, turning her body away from the three of them, staring off at the ice that makes up every corner of this room, clear and dangerous. She closes her eyes—MURDER, MURDER, MURDER—and opens them again, just as rapidly.
Inhaling shakily, Nova starts counting the deaths she’s been responsible for on her long, shaking fingers. Her skin, usually so warm and radiant, is fallow and pallid in the low light. Her thumb sticks up first, wearing Jacterr’s name. It wasn’t intentional, she tries to console herself, but her hands are still quivering. It was an accident. She didn’t mean for the lightsaber to ignite. She didn’t even know she had the power to do that, let alone use it as a weapon. It was self-defense, killing him before he had the chance to kill her. And then there were all of the faceless troopers in the TIE fighters she shot at when trying to get out alive. For years, hordes of them, shooting back at them before they had the chance to blow her to smithereens or capture her for something worse. You’ve never shot first, Nova tries to reason with herself, eyes focused on the outline of her boots, old and worn, warm against the icy floor of the room she’s standing in. It was all self-defense.
Except, that tiny little voice in the back of her mind whispers, insidious and awful, you killed Xi’an all on your own. Nova’s heart hangs heavy in her chest, like it’s on trial. She tries to inhale, but there’s no air in this ridiculous ice block of a room, and everything is purple and wounded, the imprint of Xi’an’s cold, dead body embedded on the back of her eyelids. That could be argued as self-defense, too, Nova tries to rationalize, but the reminder of the bullet that hit her wicked body head-on is still so horrible in her head. Logically, Nova knows that the only reason that she shot and killed Xi’an was because Din would have died if it weren’t for that bullet, and that Xi’an hurt her husband in ways she’d never felt fully comfortable asking about, but it’s still a dead body on her hands. Her gorgeous, terrible, radiant, shaking hands.
“I g—I gotta go,” Nova mumbles, and then her feet are carrying her out of the war room, into the hallway. They’ve put up more insulation since the time she lived here for a few weeks, when Din and Grogu left her and the world stopped turning, but the recognition of it barely registers in Nova’s mind as she sprints through the empty hallways, picking up her feet so that they don’t tangle in the loose generator wires curled across the floor. It only takes a few more turns, and then she’s through the airlock, back out into the frozen climate of Hoth’s exterior, her heart hammering something horrible, her pulse erratic, her blood pressure high and dangerous. Slowly, she sinks onto the frozen ground, right outside of the door, pressing her bare hands into the snow, trying to calm anything back to its usual resting place.
It’s freezing out here. Nova’s still in her outfit from Ahch-To, and even though her pants are lightweight and the cold cuts straight through, she’s not getting wet from the snow. Her upper body is slightly warmer, fabric of her shirt protective, the shawl wound tightly over her shoulders, flapping slightly in the wind.
“Nova,” a voice behind her cuts through the silence, and Nova turns at the sound of her name, breath stuck somewhere between her chest and her mouth. Din’s standing there, tall and stately. “Are you okay?” he asks, and the timbre of his voice makes it very clear that he knows full well that she’s not okay.
“Why?” she manages, and then she’s being hauled to her feet, Din’s gloved hands warm and steady around her waist. “Why is there a bounty on my head—alive or dead?” She blinks against a loose lock of hair blowing in her face, and before she can react to it, Din’s already tucking it gently behind her ear. “I thought the Order wanted me—”
“I don’t know,” Din interrupts gently. “I don’t know why you have any of these charges on your head, or why there’s a bounty at all. Gideon and everyone we’ve interacted with associated with the First Order always insisted that you would work for them, not that you were to be eliminated. I don’t know who put the charges out there, but we’re going to fix it. I’m never going to let anyone touch you.”
Nova looks straight up at the visor, swaying slightly in the frosty breeze. Her head hurts. Her scar aches. The pressure that’s constantly blossoming on her shoulder blades feels incredibly heavy, and even though the wind is frozen through, it makes her heart burn for Ahch-To—its gorgeous greenness, its holy ground—and Nova just stares at her own, unhinged reflection in Din’s helmet.
Her teeth press down onto her bottom lip before she can muster up the strength to speak. One of Din’s gloved hands is pressed protectively against the small of her back, and the other is holding her right cheek, a fortification, a promise. Nova looks desperately into the visor, trying to see straight through to Din’s brown eyes. Her voice is barely there when she’s able to talk. “How?”
Bo-Katan’s helmet is off by the time Nova feels stable enough to walk back inside. The airlock door hisses shut behind them, and Wedge is the one that Nova catches first. He’s outfitted in his regular orange jumpsuit, but the spark that usually burns behind his eyes is replaced by a sadness that Nova’s never seen before. He offers her a small smile, beckoning into the room, but she knows his mind is racing just as quickly as hers is, and when she looks at the holotable, the horrible image of her isn’t projected anymore. She inhales once, exhales, and tries to coax her heart back to a normal rhythm.
“Novalise—”
“It’s okay,” Nova whispers, nodding in Bo-Katan’s direction without looking at her. “You—you were right to call us here. I’m just…” she trails off, a small glint of light catching the stone on her ring finger, and she sighs. “I was taken by surprise. That was—I wasn’t expecting it. I know the First Order wants me. I know that my…powers, however mysterious as they are, make me valuable, and that makes me dangerous. But I don’t understand who wants me dead if it’s not the people we’ve been running from for the last year.”
Bo-Katan steps forward, uncrossing her lean, muscled arms. Silently, she pulls up the shimmering holograms again, but this time, Nova’s bounty doesn’t come up. It’s not anything recognizable until Bo-Katan points to a blue, rotating sphere. “I think,” she finally says, her tone unreadable, “that whoever put this bounty up on you wants your face out there in a bigger capacity than what it already is. You’re known in the Alliance, obviously, and now you’re known on Mandalore.” She stabs her finger at the hologram of the planet, rotating in silence. “And you’re wanted by the First Order, for whatever horrible plans they have next. But whoever this other force is—”
Nova holds up a hand, and, miraculously, Bo-Katan stops talking. “They want me to be a martyr,” she whispers, and all three of them look over at her with various expressions of disbelief. Din’s face is still hidden underneath his helmet, but Nova knows exactly what the contours of his features look like right now. Wedge’s worry lines deepen, dark and troubled. Bo-Katan raises one sculpted eyebrow, but her eyes focus on Nova’s like she knows it’s the truth.
“What did Luke say?” Wedge asks, finally.
“I don’t see how that’s relevant right now,” Bo-Katan interjects, but Wedge holds up a hand. It’s so sharp in contrast to his usual easygoing demeanor that her mouth snaps back shut.
“Nova’s a Jedi,” Wedge continues, eyes drifting to the lightsaber hanging off her belt. “Or at least she’s going to be,” he amends, “so she’s rare. One of three still existing that I know of, so that makes her incredibly important. Luke has been off on his own the last few years, trying to piece back the history of the Jedi that got lost or erased in the war. And that’s the Skywalker family lightsaber she has right there,” Wedge continues, nodding again at Nova’s belt loop, “so I know she went to go see him. What did he say, rebel girl?” he asks again, and Nova exhales lowly through the tiny gap of her open mouth.
“He knows something is coming,” Nova manages, finally. “He wanted—he wanted me to stay and train. He’s trying to locate all of the remaining Jedi in the galaxy, to try and rebuild what got destroyed. And,” she continues, exhaling, “he told me that what died may not stay dead.”
“Well,” Bo-Katan interjects, huffing, “that’s incredibly cryptic and entirely unhelpful.”
“Don’t start,” Wedge snaps, an edge to his voice. “Did he mean Gideon?”
Nova slowly shakes her head. It’s the truth, even though, to Bo-Katan’s point, Luke was being cryptic when he gave her that particularly sage warning. It’s not Gideon. Luke was talking about something deeper. “No,” she whispers, finally. “He meant someone—or something—much worse.”
Bo-Katan raises another eyebrow, a scorn so distasteful it makes waves on her face. “Yet another cryptic and unhelpful point, Novalise.”
Din steps forward before the expression on Nova’s face even changes. Bo-Katan Kryze doesn’t cower much, but she sure as hell shrinks underneath Din’s stance. He’s all anger, electric wires running currents throughout his entire tense body. Even the beskar pales in comparison to his rage. His hand slips to his own waistline, and Bo-Katan’s startled eyes glaze over the Darksaber before she backs down.
Nova has no idea how to diffuse this situation. Maybe Din’s right, maybe she is an expert at getting out of things, but the mountain crushing down on top of her shoulders just keeps growing bigger and bigger. Soon, it’ll be the size of Mandalore, and then she’ll have two planets to try and keep balanced on her already aching back. Nova rubs at the sore spot between her eyebrows, trying to worry out the knot that’s been growing in intensity there.
Bo-Katan’s talking again. Nova registers it, faintly, in the back of her mind. She’s long since grown tired of running, but right now, all her legs want to do is make a break for it. She’s exhausted and frozen in place and so unsteady on her feet. All Nova craves right now, this very second, is to lay back down in the piles of frigid snow outside and let it cool down her body right to the core. Din’s voice is angry, direct, curling in waves through the modulator, and when Nova whips back around to face the three of them, somehow, miraculously, they all grow silent.
“They want me to be a martyr,” Nova repeats, her voice barely anything in the chill of the chamber. Wedge’s thick eyebrow raises, his careful eyes searching over her face, trying to find her angle. “I’m not going to be. But I’m also not going to sit and wait on Mandalore for them to come find me, whoever they are. I’m not going to make it easy for them. Besides,” she finishes, eyes locking on Din’s, even under the obscurity of his helmet, “I’m a Rebel. Laying low isn’t in my blood.”
“Maybe,” Bo-Katan says, and there’s a razor’s edge to her already sharp voice. Something is wrong, Nova knows that, because underneath all of that icy venom, there’s a tremble that ricochets through her words. “But you’re forgetting something. You aren’t just a Rebel anymore. You’re the queen of a planet—”
“I’m a figurehead,” Nova spits back, exasperated. Maker above, her head is seriously killing her. Somewhere, distantly, she aches for the quiet crush of hyperspace, the dazzle, the glimmer, the flair of it all. Out there, running didn’t feel like running. And out there, home actually felt like home. “I’m nothing. I’m married to the Mand’alor, that’s it. I don’t rule. I don’t interact with anybody but the two of you. I wear Mandalore colored clothes, sometimes I’m in the war room, but most of the time, I’m staring up at the sky, and I can’t see the stars. I cannot see,” she continues, her voice unhinging into something desperate, “a single star from the planet’s surface. Bo-Katan, Mandalore is a ghost town. There’s only a handful of people left. Why did you battle Din for power in the first place,” she finishes, tears gathering in the corners of her eyes, “if this was all that it was for?”
The room is silent. Nova can barely see straight, her eyes burning with the tears she’s trying to hold back. Bo-Katan looks like she’s been wounded—not pissed off, not royally wronged—wounded. Hurt. It’s written in the fracture lines of her face, and even though she’s been cold and hostile and a pain in everyone’s asses, Nova aches knowing she put them there. “Because,” Bo-Katan says, finally, and her voice isn’t icy anymore. It’s flat. Monotonous. “I love Mandalore. And I wanted something more.”
Nova inhales shakily, letting her shoulders round, clutching her arms around herself. The shawl wrapped around her upper body has fallen down to her shoulders, her loose hair flying in curls around her face. She’s exhausted. Behind her, she can feel Din stepping forward, his presence like a locus, an orbiting star. She staggers backward, mouth struck open, unable to conjure any words to fix this. “Bo-Katan—”
“Maybe I was wrong,” Bo-Katan interrupts, and her regular permafrost is back. “Maybe I was wrong about you. You’re right. You’re not a ruler. You’re a figurehead, Andromeda.” Nova recoils as if Bo-Katan slapped her. Slapping her would be better, actually, because the gut punch that comes with the stab of her old name is almost too much to bear. “And you’re sure as hell not a Mandalorian.”
Nova closes her eyes at the impact, but Din shoves his body forward, the whoosh of the Darksaber igniting in his hand before Nova can react. When she finally opens them, Din is standing like the warrior he is, like the bounty hunter he used to be. The horrible, flickering blade is up in front of Bo-Katan, an inch from her throat.
“I agreed to do this job because you insisted. I only promised to follow through if you were in my corner.” Din’s hand doesn’t waver once. Nova watches, horrified, as the terrible blade crackles and hisses in the low, cold light. “You intentionally disrespecting my wife is the opposite of being in my corner. If you ever,” he continues, and Nova can hear the grit of his teeth through the modulator, “use that name to refer to her again, those words will be your last. Do you understand me?”
Bo-Katan stares up at him, all malice. “You’re playing with fire.”
“Believe me,” Din spits, voice even and dangerous, “you haven’t been burned by me yet.”
Finally, she steps down, jutting her chin downward in a very reluctant nod. “Maybe you’re not a Mandalorian,” she concedes, staring back at Nova. Nova’s frozen to the spot, arms hugged tightly against her chest, knees shaking from the proverbial impact, “but Mandalore is still your home. For now, at least. And until we figure out who’s after you, that’s where you’ll stay. No Rebel missions. No alone time out in the stars.” She stares up at Din. “You wanted me in your corner? Fine. But your corner is on Mandalore, and Mandalore only.”
“I can’t do that,” Nova manages, quietly, her teeth aching in her mouth. “I need to train, Bo-Katan, I—I need to go see Grogu, I’m a commander in the Alliance, I cannot be grounded on a planet indefinitely, not with the entire galaxy on the brink of another war, not while there are two groups of people who want me dead or to be their slave—”
“Your home,” Bo-Katan interjects, her eyes dangerous behind her solid voice, “is on Mandalore now. What better place to protect you than a planet full of born and bred warriors?”
Nova’s heart is in her throat. It aches, pulsing and twisting and waning, like she has a knife lodged in her esophagus. “I can’t stay there indefinitely, I—I’m a Jedi—”
“No,” Bo-Katan interrupts again, “you are not. Not yet, and not until we figure out what danger the Order and these bounty hunters are to the rules of Mandalore. Besides,” she tacks on, leaning back on her heels, “Mandalorians and Jedi do not get along.” Her glance that flickers over to Din’s intimidating, awful silhouette, the Darksaber a ruthless weapon in his capable hands, is the only thing that gives away all the fear she’s tucked away under all that venom.
“Ahsoka Tano,” Nova manages, and something painful runs through the hard lines on Bo-Katan’s face. “You led us to Ahsoka. So no matter what you’re telling us right now, I know that you get along with at least one Jedi better than you think.”
Bo-Katan stares back at her. For a horrible beat, nobody breathes. Nova’s almost forgotten Wedge is still in the room until he lets out a quiet, exhausted sigh. “We’re going back to Mandalore. Wedge will run the Rebel operation from here, with people who aren’t responsible for a planet and the next collective fight of the galaxy. You leave Mandalore,” she says, and this time her gaze is trained expertly on Din’s visor, “you’re on your own.”
“Stop,” Wedge says, finally, and the singular word shatters through the tension, bringing everything down to the icy floor in one fell swoop. “Stop it. You,” he says, pointing at Bo-Katan, “were in here less than a month ago talking about unity, wanting to build something better, to protect the galaxy. I never thought we’d be close friends, Bo-Katan, but I at least thought you were on our side.” He lets the intention hang there, before turning to Din. “You are an incredible warrior, Din. I think Nova was right about you being a good leader. I think you have great potential. But I’ve seen power easily go sideways, and if you keep fighting against your own, you’re going to end up in another war. And you,” he enunciates heavily, turning on Nova, “you’re the best person I know. Kindest heart I’ve ever seen, except maybe for Luke. You’re an incredible pilot, a fantastic Rebel, and I don’t doubt for a second that you can save the galaxy from whatever evil it brings. But you’re not immortal, Nova. You’re not a saint, or a god, or anything bigger than a human being. Bo-Katan is right about one thing, and that’s you being in danger. They want you to be a martyr? Don’t let them make that a reality.” He pauses, and there’s something ancient in his eyes. “Go back to Mandalore. Work with each other, in whatever capacity that means. And when the three of you realize that we’re all in this together, no matter what threat we’re facing next, then you get to call the shots again.” He lets that hang in the air too, and it’s so heavy with genuine care, Nova’ heart breaks over itself again. “And I don’t make a habit of saying this, but may the Force be with us all.” His gaze roams over the three of them again, and Nova swallows, nodding against Wedge’s words. “We’re certainly going to need it.”
Mandalore is deadly and quiet.
It doesn’t welcome the three of them back in open arms. Bo-Katan’s ship is so much sleeker than Kicker, but Nova revels in the groan and tumble her starfighter makes when it touches down on cool, ashy earth. Her teeth are still shaking in her mouth. She has a headache, one she can feel in her jaw, right down to the bone. No one has spoken since Wedge gave his rebel rousing speech back on Hoth, and Nova knows that nothing she can manage can top that one. She’s silent in her flying, her disembarking. Slowly, she and Din trail Bo-Katan up the marble steps of the palace, and Nova can barely remember to offer her usual smile at the guards before the tall, impressive doors snap shut.
“I meant what I said,” Bo-Katan offers, finally, and there’s a wicked set in her jaw. “I can’t protect you out there. Mandalore is my home. I’m not abandoning this planet to run after the two of you and your masochistic need to save the galaxy. It’s been through enough, and I’m not going to let either of you ruin that. I meant it.”
Nova stares at her. She wants to snap back, to repeat what Wedge said, to shake some sense into Bo-Katan’s tense shoulders, but she doesn’t. She left all of her vitriol and fire back on Hoth, and she’s so incredibly tired. It’s nearly impossible to remember that DIn only took the throne a little over two weeks ago, that the ragtag group of their collected rebel fighters seemed so confident that they could stop the First Order, take down the evil lurking there, and restore peace to the galaxy. “So did I,” Nova whispers, finally, and Bo-Katan blinks uncharacteristically, a tiny slip in her usual armor before she opens her mouth again.
“We’ll talk more about this tomorrow,” Bo-Katan allows, and then she turns on her beskar heel and walks off somewhere in the dark haunt of the castle, her steps receding into nothing but dread.
Nova’s scar hurts. These days, it always seems to hurt, this horrible sucking wound that still aches, an aftershock of a trauma long gone. She sighs, long and heavy, wanting to sink into bed for a day or two and sleep all this responsibility off. She wants to be back up there in the stars, moving from planet to planet with purpose. She wants to use the lightsaber hanging from her belt. She wants to hug Grogu to her chest, to feel his tiny green body give off that special kind of warmth. She wants to lay with Din without armor, the rest of the world falling away.
When she finally manages to pull her heavy head up, Din is staring at Nova in the silence. There’s only a small strike of moonlight cutting across the strange, blue floor. He’s still wearing his helmet, but she can practically cut straight through the shield by the way she can feel his eyes piercing hers. This aches, too, such small hurts that accumulate across the map of her body.
“Come with me,” he says, finally, and when he reaches out his familiar, steady hand, she takes it.
It’s quiet in the palace, as per usual, but something about the moon striking through the windows as they move through the empty halls feels loud and haunting. Quietly, Din and Nova walk, hand in hand, past the throne room, past the staircase that leads to their massive bedroom, into the maze of corridors in the yawning belly of the beast. The amphitheatre is massive, something holy in its own right. Mandalorians treat battle like it’s divine, and the giant stadium built into their palace is made of marble and blue stone, the sky open and glittering above the arena.
“Why are we here?” Nova asks, finally, breaking the silence holding the both of them captive.
“Because,” Din answers, his voice level, leading her to the center of the ring, “this is where I won the Darksaber.”
Nova raises a dark eyebrow at him, and even though Din’s face is still obscured by the helmet, she can feel his face softening. “I know, mighty Mand’alor,” she deadpans, her own voice gentle, “I was there for the fight of the century, remember?”
“Stop it,” he interjects, but there’s no venom in his tone. She smiles, relaxing slightly, letting her aching shoulders drop. “I meant this is where it started. When we stood here, you said you thought I could be a good ruler. A fair one. Someone people would listen to.”
“I still think that,” she echoes, and Din’s fingers flutter over the makeshift hood of her shawl, dropping the blue fabric so that her hair falls loose. There shouldn’t be a breeze in here, but something rustles Nova’s long curls, letting them spiral over her right shoulder. “Actually, I know it—”
“I’m not,” Din interrupts, and Nova watches his movements, how calculated they are, how he’s pacing back and forth in the pit around her. It’s empty in here except for the two of them, but there’s some strange sense of exhibition, as if they’re being watched. “I’m not a good leader, Nova, because I’m not a leader. Bo-Katan told me Mandalore doesn’t take kindly to outsiders, but you were right earlier. This place is a ghost town. Besides the people who live and work in the palace, I’ve never seen anyone in the village. I’ve spent hours in the war room just looking at the maps, trying to figure out where all of the Mandalorians are.” He sighs, and Nova chances a half-step forward. “There aren’t any. They’ve either fled, been killed, or have left Mandalore to hide on other planets, like my covert.”
“Din,” Nova starts, but when he holds up a single gloved hand, the words die on her tongue.
“There’s nothing here left to rule,” he says, finally, like the words are both an incredible burden and the truth that sets him free. “Mandalore is gone. Whatever it used to be, whoever used to live here, what we see is all that’s left. Maybe I am meant to rule this planet full of nobody, I don’t know. Maybe this is some sort of strange...riddle that I can’t figure out. But I can’t understand why it’s so imperative for the two of us to step into these roles, to follow rules that make no sense, to try and be a leader for a planet that’s barely anything.”
Nova stares at him. A small smile winges across her lips before she even realizes why. “You don’t want to stay here,” she whispers, which is an echo of the same sentiment she’s been saying for weeks, but this time it feels like the truth laid bare. “You want to be where the fight is.”
Din’s quiet. His shoulders are still rigid. “I don’t run from things.”
“True.” Nova steps another foot towards him, her head cocked to the side, trying to puzzle out what’s happening in his head without seeing a glimpse of his face. “That’s usually my M.O.”
“Stop it,” Din whispers, but there’s no fire left in his voice. Nova studies him—his stature, his stance, the Darksaber hanging off his hip, the proverbial crown balanced over his helmet—but there’s nothing hardened there, nothing sharp, regardless of how regal he is, how his presence cuts through every room like a knife. When she’s finally close enough to touch him, her hands immediately go to his helmet, pressing her palms against the smooth, cold beskar, an invitation and a question all at once. “Novalise,” he tries, and her name sounds like something more, something deeper, something holy. Quietly, she presses her body against his, letting the coolness of the armor heat up against the soft curves of her skin. “We can’t do this in here—”
“You’re the one,” she breathes, hooking her fingers under the rim of the helmet, “who said this is our place to desecrate.”
Din’s breath comes out sharp and wicked, like he’s been impaled on her words. “And I meant it then,” he manages, as she starts to pull his helmet off, “but now all I want to do is be back out there in the stars. Not be this figurehead. Not being the leader of a dozen people who all hate my guts and want to slaughter me for the throne.”
“You are a leader,” Nova continues, pressing her body closer to his. Even through the armor, she can feel him harden against her touch, stiffening against her trousers, a sign that she’s pushing the both of them closer and closer to the edge. “You’re an excellent leader.
The sound that erupts from Din’s mouth is even more wicked as the modulator cuts off in the middle of it. Nova pulls the rest of the helmet off of his face, her eyes roaming over every single pore, trying to memorize the way he’s staring at her, half-frenzied, his eyes fluttering somewhere between pleasure and pain.
“Novalise.” Her name still sounds like a prayer. Nova doesn’t break Din’s eye contact, just drops the helmet with a clatter against the floor. It’s loud, deafening almost, but he doesn’t flinch at the sound. “You can’t say things like that to me—”
“Then stop me,” Nova counters. Her heart is hammering. She’s being a brat, she knows she is, a whiny, wheedling baby that only wants one thing, but she can’t help herself. Din’s gloved hand closes around her wrist, squeezing lightly, and even though it makes her heart skip a beat, she’s unhinged and dangerous right now. Silently, she unhinges his hand from where it’s gripping her arm and places Din’s fingers against her throat, leaning into his touch, eyes wide, inviting. “I know you. I know what you want. I know that I made a Rebel out of you, Mand’alor, but I also know that when you give people orders, they’re helpless to do anything other than follow them. You can have whatever you want. You just have to prove it.”
His eyes glint for just a moment. It’s in a flash, over almost as soon as it starts, just a nanosecond, but something glittering and dangerous sparks up behind Din’s measured brown eyes, and Nova barely has time to inhale before his grips tightens around her throat, his other hand anchoring her hips in place. It’s an exact replica of the way he’s held her a million times, but his touch still feels brand new. “I want you.”
Everything stops existing. The war, the ghost town of a planet they’re supposed to rule, the First Order, the insidious war that’s gearing up in the underbelly of the galaxy. The pressure for Din to be a ruler, the urgency of Nova becoming a Jedi, every single piece of their lives fall away. It’s devastating and divine, vivid and vivacious. “Then take me,” Nova breathes, feeling Din harden against her leg, hot and heavy even through her pant leg and the beskar that’s protecting him. “Take me, but do it without armor.”
He stares at her, just for a second, and despite knowing that she has her husband wrapped around her pinky finger, Nova’s own eyes widen, heartbeat quickening, worried she took it a step too far. When Din’s hands disappear from her body, a panicked apology is already trying to hurtle its way out of her mouth, but Din doesn’t break eye contact. His hands pull the armor off of his body, letting each piece clatter at his feet like it’s nothing. Nova’s breath has barely been returned to her lungs by the time that Din’s finished undressing, standing in front of her with nothing but his underclothes, Mandalorian blue, and then he slams himself into her, knocking both of them back a few steps with the centrifugal force. Her knees buckle as she lets herself be swept away, wind knocked right back out through the hollow of her open mouth, Din’s hands purposeful and intentional.
Nova’s pretty sure she’s seen Din this vibrant before, this full of desire, but the way he devours her means something deeper. It’s desperate, and yearning, and haunting, leaving his mark all over her body to be worn as a prize later. His lips trail down her jaw, his teeth sinking into her skin, tongue licking out a symphony on the pulse points he’s expertly mapped over the last year. “Din,” she manages, before his name is sucked straight out of her mouth, and his hands twist and writhe underneath the clothes she’s wearing.
Almost as immediately as he started, his mouth disappears. Nova’s eyes flutter open, trying to find where Din retracted himself to, and his large hands, suddenly bare of the gloves he was wearing just a second ago, grasp onto her face. She inhales sharply as he grabs her, the force of his grip puckering her lips up. Nova feels like putty in his hands, like she’s buzzing. “You want me without armor, cyar’ika?” he asks. Din’s voice is so low, it rumbles straight through her, everything between her legs a hurricane. “You want me to be a ruler?”
Wordlessly Nova nods, trying to coax air back into her lungs. “Yes,” she manages.
There’s something torrential in the low blaze of Din’s eyes. Nova thinks she’s still standing, that he’s keeping her upright, but honestly, she can’t tell. The only thing she’s focused on is the darkened outline of his gorgeous face, the flash of his eyes. “Then I want you like that, too,” Din breathes, yanking the shawl right off of her shoulder. Nova’s hair springs out from underneath it, ricocheting against her face as Din grasps her cheeks, pulling her forehead against his. “No armor. Submissive to what I say.”
Nova gasps, nodding against Din’s touch, and when he tears her clothes off of her, she doesn’t even try to tell him she needs them intact. It’s just fabric. It doesn’t matter, not when his hands can burn against her. When they sink down to the floor of the amphitheatre, kissing so hard their teeth knock together, nothing else exists anymore. It’s just Nova and Din and the stars they’re under, just like always.
The ground is cold against her back, but the second Din pulls his pants down and gets on top of her, the chill is immediately forgotten. Nova stares up at Din, trying to map every single inch of his face, even though she’s already memorized it, even though he’s shown it to the rest of the planet, it still feels so incredibly divine. He’s inhaling sharply, and when she flutters his eyelashes up at him, she nods. Permission. It’s just a second, wordless, but he understands. Usually, Nova wants foreplay, to be kissed, to have every single inch of her body blessed by the man she loves, but that’s not necessary tonight. When he pushes inside of her, hard and warm and huge, she gasps against the pressure. It’s devastating. It’s perfect. It’s hot and heavy and loud, and the force of how Din’s fucking her makes her head slam back agaisnt the floor. Before she can mutter a single word, one of his hands comes up underneath her skull, creating a barrier against Nova and the marble. She lifts her hips, locking her ankles around Din, trying to keep herself in the place he needs her, eyes rolling back in her head.
Somewhere, something devious whispers to her that she’s being used, but right now, Nova doesn’t even care. Every inch of her body is screaming out for Din’s, and every place where he’s touching her feels sacred, complete.
“Nova,” he whispers, and she’s a hymn, a prayer, something deeper than herself in this strange, makeshift place of worship. She wants to talk, to reassure him that she’s here, but then Din’s mouth is back against her lips, ravenous, unyielding. It’s everything. It’s dark in here, and still eerily quiet, and for the first time, she’s unabashed about filling this space up with their noise. It feels like a rite of passage, something divine, especially when Din licks his vows into her mouth, murmuring in Mando’a, swearing in Basic, and his other hand finds the curve of Nova’s hips, lifting her up so he can fuck deeper into her. Suddenly, every single insidious thought evaporates, her hand fluttering down across her stomach to reach her clit.
“Din,” she manages, breathy and disconnected, and immediately, his expert hand knocks hers away, replacing her touch with vigor. Before Nova even has a chance to adjust to his pressure, he’s pushing her over the edge, her oragasm quick and loud, deafening and ecstatic.
“Wait for me,” he grunts, his mouth back on her neck, and Nova’s eyes are flooding with collapsing stars, her ears buzzing, and she wants to apologize that she’s beating him there but when he’s touching her like that, she doesn’t even care. But then Din breaks away from her, angling his hips to slam deeper and deeper into Nova, and his lips tear off her neck, knocking their foreheads together. “Now,” he orders, and his voice is low and commanding, and that alone sends Nova through the roof.
Din grunts as he’s about to cum, writhes into her like it’s the last time that he’ll ever get to touch her. Usually, he pulls out soon afterward, rolls over on his back beside her, but tonight, he just grabs onto Nova’s jaw and stays pulsing in her. Every time his cock twitches with the aftershock, it extends Nova’s own orgasm, and she lets herself be held there, not wanting to move.
“I could,” she starts, panting.
“Stay here forever,” Din finishes, his voice barely anything at all. “I know.”
For what feels like lightyears, they stay together, a tangle of limbs and warmth, trying to catch their collective breaths. Slowly, the rest of the world filters back in, and the quiet, starry darkness of the amphitheatre doesn’t feel desecrated. It feels used, for something better than it was designed for, at that, and Nova feels her heartbeat pound down to a regular rhythm before she lets Din lay down beside her, both of them exhausted, staring up at the ceiling.
“I meant it,” Nova finally says, closing her eyes to feel the hum of her own voice in her throat. One hand is tracing the outline of her scar, the other is tangled up in the discarded shawl that Din thankfully did not eviscerate. “When I said you were a good leader. I think you’re a great one, Din Djarin, and even though I want to be out there.” Nova trails off, gesturing at the ceiling painted with stars, “if staying put means you get to do that, I’ll stay right here. I’ll be a Mandalorian.”
Din’s quiet. Nova doesn’t dare to move, because she knows the significance of what she just said, the crushing weight of it. “I meant it, too,” he whispers, finally. “When I said I’d follow you anywhere.”
Nova inhales sharply, finally turning her head to search her husband’s eyes. “I know,” she murmurs, eyebrows furrowing down the middle. “And I believe you. But what do you want?”
Din’s face is entirely unreadable. Nova counts the beats of her heart as they sit there in the silence, trying to encourage him without saying a single thing.
“You.”
Nova inhales, wetting her mouth with her tongue. “What else do you want?”
Din stares at her, moving only to press the open palm of his bare hand against her cheek. “I want you without armor, too,” he whispers, and then pulls both of them to their feet. Nova knows there’s more to that sentence, but she’s fighting sleep, and she doesn’t want to put pressure on more points than either of them can take. Wordlessly, they redress, and Nova follows Din out of the eerie amphitheatre, out of the maze of tunnels, back to the first floor where the giant war room sits, beskar throne impenetrable at the highest point. She wraps her shawl tighter around ehr shoulders, all the warmth that sex gave them blown away by the startling reality of the situation. Without a word, Din presses the ignition to the holotable, and the strange, blue, fractured image of Nova ten years ago illuminates.
She inhales sharply, her old reflection a sucker punch. Din grabs her hand, and Nova squeezes it, trying to stare at herself head on, without flinching.
“I want to kill off Andromeda Maluev and everyone who’s after her,” Din breathes, his voice so much louder without the barrier of the helmet and the modulator. “I don’t want to rule this planet and ignore the war that’s coming while there are people out there who want you.”
“Din—”
“Listen to me,” Din whispers, grabbing Nova’s face in his hands, and she turns away from her painful reflection, letting him become the only thing she orbits, even if it’s only for a second, even if it’s only for now. “You are Novalise Djarin. I’m not going to let anyone take that away from you.”
Nova’s green eyes flood with tears. Above them, above the mist and fog and haze that hangs over Mandalore like an omen, her stars are sparkling and clear. She inhales, focusing her blurry gaze on her husband, something concrete, something real. “What does that mean?” she whispers, and Din’s right hand goes to her right hip, purposefully knocking into the Skywalker family lightsaber, and Nova’s sharp inhale comes out stuttered.
Din’s eyes are a promise, a prayer. His bare hand smoothes back over her cheek, and something dangerous and pulsing inside of Nova suddenly quiets. “It means,” he says, guiding her own hand down to the weapon hanging from her hip, “that we do what Mandalorians do best. We’ll take it one day at a time,” he continues, and Nova nods, “but we’re going do what we do best. All of us.”
“What are you—?”
“I’m saying,” Din sighs, pointing up through the domed ceiling, and Nova strains her eyes to look through the clouds to the stars above, pulsing and flickering with the promises they’ve made to each other, “that Bo-Katan is going to protect Mandalore, Luke is going to train our kid, Boba and Fennec are going to avenge, Cara’s going to forcefully keep the peace, Karga’s going to figure out who put the bounty on your head, Wedge is going to rally the troops, and you and I are going to save the galaxy.”
There’s a smile on Nova’s face before can register everything Din’s saying. “Din—”
“You’re the only one who gets me without armor,” Din whispers into her ear, and Nova feels the giant door sliding open behind them. She’s going to turn around to yell at Bo-Katan that it’s not the morning yet, and that she just wants one tiny minute of happiness before returning to the weight pressing down on all of their shoulders, but multiple voices filter into the throne room, and Nova lets Din pull her up the steps onto the dais, watching as the space fills up with the people who still make up Mandalore. Bo-Katan raises her chin at them, but something’s replaced the fear and vitriol in her eyes. Din lets his helmet clatter on the floor, the noise loud enough for the rest of the hushed noise in the room to fall quiet. Nova swallows, staring out to the scene of people gathered in front of them, trying to look like a leader, like someone trustworthy. “We’re going to fight,” Din promises, his voice full and honest, a vow, and then he turns to face the people he rules in the center of the room. “Let’s get started.”

Take Me To the Planetarium Chapter 3 - Shawarma
AO3 Chapter 1 Chapter 2
warnings: none
summary: Din has to pinch himself a few times during this chapter.
When Din arrived at Boba’s place he was ten minutes early. Of course, he was. He either gets somewhere too late or way too early, there was no in-between. He didn’t want to rush Boba, he probably wasn’t even ready to go yet, so Din drove round the block. When he arrived again he was only five minutes early. That was okay, he could do that.
He parked his bike on the sidewalk and set back. Din knew the street where Boba lived, it was near the centre of the city. Boba lived in an older apartment block with beautiful architecture. Din took off his helmet and looked at the trees that were framing the sidewalk. He liked being here already. Though, his gut was twisting inside of him like a snake. He was so excited to see Boba, but on the other hand, he was scared. Scared that Boba realised that Din maybe wasn’t how Boba thought he was. That Boba was disappointed by the show, that Din fucked up at keeping a conversation. That Din infodumped all the shit he knew about space and that Boba wouldn’t like that. That Din got too excited and wouldn’t stop talking...
Din got off his motorcycle and took off his gloves. It was pretty cold outside so he had to wear them, at least for the ride. He went over to Boba’s front door and raised his hand to ring the doorbell. Before he could actually press the button the door swung open and he was greeted with Boba’s always so welcoming smile.
“Hi, Din!”
Din didn’t even have time to be surprised because he immediately felt better. Boba had waited, he had been ready a long time ago. Also, he didn’t even try to hide it, because he didn’t need to. Boba didn’t try to act cool and uninterested. He showed Din that he was excited and had been looking forward to this whole...date (?). Because somehow, he knew that Din kept overthinking and he knew how to deal with that.
Din released the air in his lungs that he had been holding and smiled back at his date.
“Hi.”
He realised that Boba looked pretty good. He had put the effort into his outfit, just like Din had. He wore black jeans, that was ripped at the knees, together with a button-up that was also black. Though it had a white and grey print all over. Din couldn’t see what it was, the light wasn’t bright enough at the front door. Boba also wore a silver necklace and his hair looked like it had been styled at least a bit. The longer parts of his mullet were long enough to lightly brush his shoulders.
He held a leather jacket in his hand that was lined with a fluffy and warm looking fabric on the inside. It had a few patches sewn on it.
“Your knees will be freezing,” said Din awkwardly. Wow, what a great way to start a conversation.
Boba laughed and ran his gloved hand through his curls.
“You can keep me warm. Anything for the look.”
Din joined the laugher.
“Okay, I can do that,” he replied and gestured to the jacket. “ Also, I bet this is warm enough. Though, the ride isn’t that long.”
“That sounds good,” Boba nodded and stepped through the door and closed it behind him.
“It’s been so long since I’ve been in a planetarium. I’m pretty excited!”
Din watched Boba fumble with his keys and noticed the badass leather gloves he wore. Fingerless. Oh boy, this did something to him.
“I’m happy to help,” answered Din and walked over to his bike. Boba followed him and eyed up the vehicle.
“That looks cool. I wanted to get one too but I need money for that,” he laughed awkwardly, “My car costs so much since it’s pretty old.”
“It didn’t seem original to me. Is it tuned?”
Boba nodded and put on the huge leather jacket.
“Yeah, a friend of mine offered me to change a few things.”
“It suits you,” Din replied and watched Boba close the zipper of the leather jacket. “Ready to go?”
They both put on their helmets and Din sat down on his bike. He prepared for Boba to sit behind him. He felt the weight shift and Boba’s smaller body sitting down behind him. Boba made sure not to get all up behind Din immediately, which found Din very polite, though, he would’ve loved to feel the man pressing up behind him. He registered that Boba was already lightly resting his hands at Din’s waist. A shiver ran through his muscles which he luckily hid very well.
“Please don’t fall during turns,” said Din, his voice a bit muffled by his helmet.
“I know how to ride a bike you dingus,” Boba slapped Din’s waist and snickered.
“Well then, off we go.”
The bike started rolling, the engine started roaring and they both started to feel the wind on their bodies. The street lights began to blur and everything seemed far distant. While Din still watched the traffic, he realised how they undocked from the world and entered the wormhole where just the two of them existed. It was dangerous to start daydreaming while going 50km per hour through the city, so Din stopped hyper-focusing on Boba and concentrated on his bike.
As much as he’d love to enjoy the man’s presence behind him, there was no way he could do that for now without getting them both in trouble. Maybe, when he got used to Boba a bit more, then he’d be able to do both things all at once. But for now, he had to stay in reality.
As Din had mentioned before, the ride wasn’t long. Boba lived near downtown, which means they arrived after fifteen minutes. Din was already able to see that planetariums dome from the last traffic light. He already felt safer and way more grounded. The engine beneath him was rumbling like a sea monster in a horror movie, but the leather-clad hands on his waist felt angelic. He realised how happy he was to experience this whole situation. Planetarium in sight, on his bike, with the man he was crushing on. He made sure to remember to pinch himself when they arrive so he could make sure this wasn’t a dream.
The Moons of Iego was already greeting them with its bright lights that were nearly illuminating the whole street. The trees were touched by blue and purple, the dome of the building was brightly lit with yellow and orange. It looked like the sun.
The light show never failed to amaze Din.
The bike slowly rolled into the parking lot and through that neon sign that stated the name of the location. The sign gave Din the weird vibe of a romantic gothic style that went to a cyberpunk world. It had crooked metal bars that held the neon lights up, giving the whole entry a roughed up feeling. He was so in love with it.
There were already a few people entering the building, though, they still had plenty of time before the show started. Din liked to be early, the planetarium had an amazing interior with many cool pieces of art and items on display to learn about. Also, he wanted to buy Boba a drink.
They parked the bike and slowly got down from the seat.
After lifting his helmet Din turned to Boba and had to take a calming breath. The man was immersed in the purple light, threading through his curls and over his cheeks. A few spots of blue were on his lips and run down his neck, catching in his leather jacket. Din made sure to keep at least his mouth closed.
“What an amazing place,” he heard Boba whisper.
Din swallowed the rose that had just grown in his throat and tried to give Boba a good answer.
“I agree,” he got out and distracted himself by fumbling his keys into the pocket of his heavy biker jacket. It dreaded him a little bit to think of all the times he will have to make sure today not to let his true inner feelings show to not appear too creepy. Even if Boba was very relaxed and open-minded, Din still had to make sure. He had to go slow.
“You ready to go inside?” Din gestured to the entrance of the building that was decorated with beautiful ornaments and statues of angels and aliens.
Boba said yes to that and they both made their way to the entrance.
Din hadn’t told Boba, but he had reserved two tickets for them. he just had to be sure to get the best seats. When they entered the first big hall of the planetarium he heard Boba gasp beside him. He related to that, the first hall never failed to amaze.
It seemed like it had no ceiling because of the light show, together with the way they decorated the whole room. Din didn’t quite get how they made the effect of the endless hall but somehow they did. In the corner’s of the room were bar’s made out of silver metal and plastic to appear like space stations. The menus were hung up high up in the air, also made out of neon signs. About four meters above Din’s head were moons and space shuttles hung from the ceiling. Soft ethereal music was playing and somehow, the voices of the other visitors were muffled by the architecture of the room. It was strangely quiet in here, all the time. Just like outer space.
“This is unreal,” he heard Boba beside him and turned to look at him.
“I know what you mean.”
They both just quietly stood next to each other for a while, soaking up the relaxing energy that the room was flooded with. After a while, Din turned back to Boba.
“Do you want a drink?”
Boba met Din’s eyes and gave him a smirk.
“Sure.”
They walked over to one of the bar’s and leaned against it.
“What do you want? I’m getting a ginger ale for myself.”
Boba scanned the menu and his eyes fell on the wine.
“I love drinking alone. I’m going to take that red wine.”
“You sound like a single mom on pinterest.”
Boba started to laugh and threw his head back.
“That’s my duty. I am a single mom on pinterest. Live laugh love”!”
Din joined Boba’s cackling and realised that they were probably the loudest people in the room. He didn’t mind….and that was strange for him. With Boba, all his urge to hide from society just fell from his shoulders and out of his pockets. Boba was so confident, he took Din with him.
“Make sure that you’re still able to get on my bike after the show.”
Boba raised his eyebrows.
“I think I’ll be fine. Also, you can help me get up there. And then I’ll just hold onto you.” he leaned a bit forward and took the wine glass that Din handed him.
Din got flustered at first, his instincts were telling him to run. And then...he realised that there was no need to hide or run. He was able to play along with Boba’s flirting. He was capable of actually leading this date somewhere. He was sick of letting things happen to him. He was going to make things happen.
“Is that so? Then maybe I should buy you more drinks, huh?” Din leaned a bit closer and watched Boba take a sip from the glass. It had been a while since Din had taken control in a situation like this.
“Yes you should, because that wine tastes amazing,” replied Boba with gleaming eyes. It felt like the whole room around them had gone into a blur.
“Only the best for you.”
Boba raised his chin a little and a smug smile spread on his lips.
“What’s your goal here, biker boy? Getting me into your bed?”
Din’s inner self huffed. It was hard to keep up with Boba’s confidence and fearless flirting. He wanted to scream “Yes, kinda! Let’s go home and let me throw you on my Star Trek sheets!”
But of course, he couldn’t do that. Also, he was still very happy to be here.
“Well first, you’re going to watch that show with me and you better pay attention because there will be a test tomorrow!” Din raised his index finger as a teacher would.
Boba picked up his joke and laughed after taking another sip of wine.
“Okay, I’ll try my best, sir.”
For a few seconds, it took all of Din’s self-control to keep himself from throwing Boba over that damn bar stool next to them. He looked away for two seconds, a soft smile on his lips. Then he remembered what he actually wanted to talk about this night.
“Boba, tell me about your band. I completely fucked up asking last time.”
Boba looked surprised at that question. He then looked a little flustered, Din liked that.
“We’re an alt rock band. I play bass. Uhm...we have an EP released but the quality sucks because we don’t have the money for a good record studio.” he took a sip of the red wine and Din could see a small blush forming on Boba’s cheeks. He wasn’t sure if it’s the wine or the conversation.
“And how many people are in that band? What’s the name of the band?”
“We’re four people, the name is Spying Neighbors. We have a guitar, drums, bass keys and vocals, our guitarist also does the vocals.”
Din chuckled at that name.
“Spying Neighbors? That’s a sick name. How did that happen?”
Boba chuckled too and emptied his wine glass.
“We started rehearsing years ago at our guitarist’s parents’ house and the neighbours kept watching us and sometimes they even called the police.”
“Let me know when there’s a show! I wanna come.” Din also emptied his ginger ale.
Boba looked surprised. Probably because Din didn’t seem like a person who would go to rock shows. Which was kinda right, but he loved music and for Boba, he would go to a fully crowded club, just to see the man on stage.
“I definitely will!”
A signal from the speakers let them know that the show will start soon, only ten minutes left.
“Should we go inside?” Din placed his clas on the bar and gestured to the theatre’s entrance.
Boba nodded and picked up the jacket he had placed on that barstool next to him.
They walked over to the entrance. As they stepped through it everything turned dark. The theatre was still dark on the inside and the way to the seats was only shown by small lights on the floor. They found their seats pretty fast because Din knew the way. He had been here many times. When they sat down, Din realised that the seats weren’t even that far from each other that he remembered. Maybe he had never paid attention to it because he had never been here with another person.
“Remember the test tomorrow,” whispered Din in Boba’s direction and got a small giggle as an answer. He wasn’t able to really see Boa’s features because it was so dark in the room. But that gave him the opportunity to really listen to his voice as he talked.
“I am always amazed by all that technical stuff going on here. Like...how does this even work? Amazing!”
His voice wasn’t super deep but it wasn’t high either. It wasn’t rough, it had a smooth undertone that Din had never heard anywhere before. Also, the way he spoke gave Din butterflies in his stomach. Boba said everything with so much meaning and honesty like it was just permanently edged in his voice. It made Din happy just listening to it.
“I know what you mean. Even if someone would explain it to me, I’d still have no clue how they make it so realistic.”
“Nah, you’re smart. You’d get it.”
Din snickered at that and shook his head.
“I’m not smart Boba, I’m just interested in certain things. If I’d be that smart, I’d be working at NASA, not as a web designer.”
“What about as a web designer for NASA?” replied Boba smugly and giggled. “No for real,” he continued, "I'm kinda glad you work at Smith's, if not I'd have never met you."
Din felt his chest tickle as he heard Boba's words. At first, he didn't know what to say, and when he finally wanted to answer, the dome-like ceiling above them lit up in bright colours and music started to play. The show began.
Din already knew the show, they changed a few things from time to time but overall it was still the same. But it still didn't fail to amaze him every time. He kept his eyes glued to the projected sky above them and followed the star signs with his eyes. He wanted to look over to Boba, but he was too afraid that Boba might notice him staring.
So he kept looking at the show and leaned back in his seat, taking some time to relax and think about his next moves. The show wasn't very long, maybe about 60 minutes. He didn't want to say goodbye to Boba so soon, so he decided to ask him what he wanted to do after that. He would offer him to go to his place. He even had cleaned it up, so he kinda had to invite Boba. He was sure Boba was up for it.
He realised that being around this man made him relaxed and so confident. He felt like interacting with Boba was easy. He didn't know if it was the way Boba made sure to listen to every word Din said. Maybe it was the confidence that Boba held that washed over Din too. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, it was a strange connection he had never felt before. Din had to make sure to hold onto that.
The show had been playing for a while now and the screen showed a gigantic nebula that formed right above Din and Boba. The seats were reflecting the yellow and pink lights and Din saw that it was really bright. Before he realised he looked over to his date. Boba was leaned back in his seat, hands clasped in his lap, eyes up to the fake sky.
The colours shone beautifully in his eyes and Din couldn't stop watching him. The way his tanned skin interacted with the yellow of the nebula, the way his eyes looked more precious than diamonds. The way his lips were parted was only slightly in awe.
Din had to pinch himself, for a few seconds he was sure he was dreaming. This whole situation felt off. As if he, Din Djarin, ever had the chance to buy this human being a drink. But he wasn't dreaming. Boba was real. Real, and he was locking eyes with him.
It should've felt unnatural or weird but no, it felt like it was meant to be. Boba looked at Din, obviously liked that Din was staring at him. He smiled kindly, head slightly cocked to the side. Din felt like the gravity of the room went out and he rose up from his seat. They were floating through space, long gone from the theatre and the other guests. It was quiet, though a soft humming sound was vibrating through the void, embracing them in its fluid waves, dancing on their bodies. A look around themselves showed that they were somewhere floating in our solar system, though the earth was not in sight. Din could see Saturn and Uranus from afar. The planets were easy to recognize due to their special characteristics. He looked back at the man across from him who was holding out his hand for Din to take.
They grabbed each other's hands softly, Boba's hand the same size as Din's, fitting between his fingers so perfectly. No words were spoken, there was no need for that. It was just floating, enjoying. Looking at each other and feeling each other's skin. The colours of the Nebula were dancing on their bodies just like the humming sounds did. Din had never felt so good in his life. He could stay here forever. But he had to go.
He was brought back to reality by the voice-over of the show saying something about flying back to earth and going home. Although he didn't want to, he let go of his imagination and found himself in his seat again. He and Boba were still looking at each other as if Boba had experienced the same. Din was sure that he didn't but it still felt amazing to keep that connection.
It took them a while to realize that the show had ended and the first few guests had stood up and run to the toilet. Din had to snicker at that.
Boba was still recovering from that weird Out-of-body experience he just had. For a short moment, that world around him had been gone and there was just Din. He kinda knew that Din had experienced something similar. Something had clicked between them.
Boba looked over to Din who sat in his seat back hunched over a little, watching the people exit the room one by one. He needed to thank him for that experience.
"Should we leave too?" Din looked at Boba calmly and stretched his back a little.
Boba nodded and stretched out his legs. He hoped that this date wasn't over yet. He had to make sure it wasn’t. Din probably wanted to do something else too.
They both got up slowly and walked next to each other to the exit.
They entered the big hall again, greeted by the spaceships that hung from the ceiling. Boba looked around and watched mothers and fathers fumble with their kids' jackets. They were in a rush, the kids needed to go to sleep.
Boba was sure that Din didn't want this night to end but he also knew that, perhaps, Din had problems communicating that. He prepared himself for asking. But he was surprised when Din just looked at him, completely relaxed and…
"Do you wanna go to my place? I even have wine at home."
Boba was taken aback at first at how simply Din stated the offer. Then he smiled and nodded. Of course, he wanted to.
"I'd love to do that," he responded with as much honesty he could find, which was probably a lot because Din gave him a big smile and ushered him to the exit.
They walked over to the exit, faster than they had when they entered and stepped through the door into the cold November night.
"Don't worry I'll make sure to stay sober to drive you home." Din zipped up his thick jacket that was layered with protection. Boba had to admit that he liked the way Din looked in that jacket. It made him look pretty broad and tall.
"A true gentleman, aren't ya?"
Din shrugged and fingered the keys out of his pocket then he put on his gloves.
"Only if I want to."
Boba shook his head in amusement.
"Are you hungry? We can get Shawarma on the way," added Din.
Boba loved Shawarma so he instantly said yes. He knew which store Din was talking about, he had been there a few times.
They reached Din's bike and both put on their helmets. After they both climbed up the vehicle Din started the engine and it roared through the whole parking lot. Boba felt really comfortable behind Din and he loved to be this close to him. He leaned in a bit, wrapping his arms around Din a little tighter than he should. Din seemed to notice but he didn't say anything. There wasn't much to say about it anyway.
They rode down the road and passed many bars and clubs. Loud music was playing everywhere and the people were laughing. The streets were alive, even if it was cold as hell outside. It was a magical experience, Boba could see so much more than when he drove with his car. It felt more real.
He was still warm due to his jacket but he realised that Din had been right, his knees were freezing a bit. Maybe he should've worn pants that weren't ripped. But this one looked so good on him.
They kept driving down the streets downtown and watched drunk people partying, Then they stopped at the Shawarma place. It wasn't crowded yet so it didn't take long to order. Din paid for Boba, again. Although Boba could pay for himself, he felt good getting spoiled, it made him feel special.
Din turned way more confident than Boba had expected before and he loved it. He kind of knew that Din wasn't a very shy person, in particular, he just needed time to adjust. Boba didn't think that Din was introverted either, he just waited for the right person to talk to. He had chosen Boba. The way Din drove the two of them through the traffic safely, still with a few extra turns. He wasn’t driving wild in particular you could just sense that he had fun.
He stopped the bike in a smaller street that was filled with small bushes and trees. There was nearly no space left for car’s only a few spots were for parking. Din turned off the engine and they both got off his bike. Boba could hear the leaves rustling in the cold November winds, and as romantic as this may sound, he started shivering. His breath was fogging the air in front of him and his knees nearly fell off.
“Let me put my bike in the garage, then we can go inside. You’re freezing,” said Din immediately and opened a big dark garage door next to a (probably his) front door.
“Yeah, okay,” responded Boba and wrapped his arms around himself. He couldn’t wait to eat his Shawarma wrap and talk to Din.
Din rolled the motorcycle in his garage.
After doing that he closed the garage’s door and hurried up to open the front door. They stepped inside and Boba found himself in a small hallway with stairs leading upstairs.
Din lead the way upstairs to the second floor, where he had his apartment. He opened the door while Boba stood behind him holding the small bag with their food.
“I can hear your teeth chatter, do you want a hot chocolate or tea, coffee, a blanket?”
Boba smiled at Din’s offer and took a moment to think about it as they stepped inside.
“Tea sounds good,” he replied and looked around the living room they had just entered. It wasn’t very big and looked quite comfy. A dark blue couch, big enough for maybe three people was placed in the centre of the room with a rather big TV across from it. A few shelves filled with DVDs and books and records were nearly everywhere. Though the shelves weren’t very big, it was just a lot of them.
What Boba liked, in particular, was, that there were also things just randomly placed on the coffee table, the TV stand and the floor. He saw small and big stacks of books and random stacks of paper, drawings, in the corners of the room. A record player that was rested on a vintage-looking stool, attached to a pretty high end looking hi-fi system.
There were also posters on the wall, Boba recognised movies like Mad Max and The Matrix and a few horror movies. He also saw a painting of an artist he didn’t know. He slowly got rid of his jacket and Din took it from his hands and place it over an armchair that seemed to function as some kind of wardrobe. The same with their helmets.
Din walked across the room to switch on some lights. He didn’t switch on the big overhead light, only the smaller ones that were placed around the room. They were shining in different colours like yellow, green and a lot of red tones.
“I can’t stand bright lights, I prefer those dimmed ones,” explained Din.
Boba nodded, he understood that.
“So tea?” Din gestured to a door arch that probably led to the kitchen.
“Yeah.” Boba started walking over to Din and realised that the warmth of the room was already seeping into his body.
“I see a lot of books,” said Boba.
“Yeah, I read a lot. That’s probably no surprise. Gimme the food real quick, I’ll put in on some plates,” said and placed and turned on an electric kettle. He turned to Boba and took the bag from his outstretched hand.
Boba watched Din place the still-hot food on two plates while the water got heated up.
“So, did you like the show?” asked Din.
“It was amazing. Thank you for that experience. I really enjoyed it. The nebula was probably the best part.” Boba thought back to the moment they had when they both met their eyes during that part of the show.
Din smiled as he listened to Boba’s answer.
“That’s great to hear. I am amazed every time I go there. It’s never the same. What tea do you like? I have apple or black tea.”
“Apple.” said Boba and leaned against the door frame.
“Are your knees still working or should we replace them with robotic ones?” joked Din and brewed the tea for Boba.
“Yes, probably. I can’t feel them anymore…” said Boba. Well, that might be a bit too dramatic.
“You can sit on the couch and I’ll give you a blanket. C’mon, the tea needs to brew for a while.”
Din walked over into the living room again and took a fluffy looking, mustard yellow blanket. Boba followed him and sat down on the velvet couch after Din ushered him to do so. Without a warning, he threw the blanket over Boba.
Boba wrapped it around himself, touched by the kind gesture. He looked at the pillows that lay on the couch next to him. They were brightly coloured a few had stars printed on them. It felt like Din bought them at many different stores and didn’t like to follow a consistent aesthetic. Also, the count of the pillows revealed that he probably spent a lot of time on this couch. The coffee table in front of him was made out of glass, it was shaped like a kidney. An Ipad was laying on top of it, together with a few magazines about robotics and design. Next to them stood a Funko Pop of Loki Laufeyson.
Din had picked a record he wanted to listen to together with Boba. He turned to Boba who was curled up on his couch scanning the coffee table.
“Do you know this record?” he asked and held it up in Boba’s direction “It’s Visions, by Grimes.” It was one of Din’s favourite albums.
Boba shook his head no.
“Then I will enlighten you now.” Din put the vinyl in his record player and the music started playing softly.

 _____________________________________________________________
Doomsday shook the whole SMP. Dream going to prison didn't help much.
On his end, Ranboo was happy with where he was, as long as he wasn't being evicted that is, but he was good at keeping out of people's business so he was safe. He spends most of his time away anyway, lonely long mining trips and treasure hunts were slowly becoming his favourite activities. When he wasn't waking up in random spots. Aside from that, he was okay being alone. Ranboo wasn't lonely.
On the other end, Tubbo was also okay. Being away from people, alone in Snowchester, as he named the frozen patch of land he decided to live on, was good for him he told himself. He had all the freedom to practice magic and alchemy... All on his lonely own... Back in the day, Dream would visit to see his experiments and compliment him on his good work... He just missed old days, not Dream and his scheming. Tubbo wasn't lonely.
On some level, they both knew they were missing something. They were just unsure what...
Usually, Tubbo would stay in reading some old book in long gone language, making his skeleton's bring him food or fiddle with alchemical formulas or spells. Anyone would want a bit of a break from time to time, so on one a bit less cold day, just after a snowstorm he put on a heavy coat, heavy shoes and went out for a walk.
Ranboo wasn't a fan of his sleepwalking habits, especially when his sleepwalking would deposit him in the middle of snowy nowhere, snowy nowhere that wasn't anywhere near home. At least that was what he thought until he saw smoke in the distance. With that little ray of hope in a slowly dying down snowstorm, he forced his legs to move forwards. Even if he was a bit more okay with cold than most as a part enderman, extended stay outside in the cold still wasn't a good idea. How long was he walking? Was the world always spinning that much? Was the ground always this clo...
Out of all people he used to know Tubbo didn't expect to see Ranboo passed out in the snow barely outside of his land. Alone. Didn't he live with Technoblade and Philza now? Crouching down he poked the enderman hybrid. "You okay man?"
No answer.
With a heavy sigh and a glare to the side, he took control of a couple of skeletons hiding among nearby foliage, probably since the storm and commanded them to carry Ranboo for him. There was no way he could carry him, he was too tall and lanky. There was no urgency in Tubbo's return. Ranboo would be okay, he knew what he was capable of better than anyone, he was usually fixing him for Dream back in the day after all, despite Dream being better at healing magic. It was rather funny how their magic was so opposite. Dream with healing and Tubbo with necromancy. Dream always explained it with healing magic not working well on endermen, and it wasn't like Tubbo was using magic, just heavily advanced, mostly forgotten alchemy he picked up out of boredom.
At home Tubbo went right to work, sending all skeleton's away as soon as his guest was safely tucked away into only bed in the small house. With how tall Ranboo was it was rather hard and looked very funny with how much of his legs were out of the bed. He didn't need Ranboo freaking out right after waking up.
With them alone, he got to work mixing a very familiar formula he didn't do in a while, a specialised ointment for endermen water burns. Even though it sounded easy to make it was a while since he had to make something on that scale so he didn't mind. It was fun to stretch his abilities from time to time.
When Ranboo woke up he was warm and he could hear a familiar low humming. "Tubbo?" he muttered trying to sit up, It was indeed Tubbo who was humming, in simple overalls and a thick yellow sweater, fiddling with alchemical stands. "Your horns got big," he noticed before a jolt of pain forced him to hive upon sitting up.
"No moving for you big guy," Tubbo said turning around, left side first so his good eye could see his guest properly. "You were pretty messed up when I found you."
Ranboo just smiled weakly. He missed Tubbo, more than he realised. "Tommy said you died. He told us Dream got you."
"Maybe he did, maybe he didn't, either way, it was an out from all the conflict." Tubbo said walking closer and passed him a small bowl with some sparkling ointment, "put this on your water burns, should make it better faster than regen potions. You hungry?"
"Yes?" Ranboo wasn't sure what to answer after that.
Tubbo's cottage was nice, not big but Ranboo was used to small spaces living with Techno and Philza. He was sure they made interiors cramped for defensive purposes, it wasn't like they lacked space to build bigger. Soon Tubbo was back with two steaming bowls of some sort of soup.
"But why hide? I'm pretty sure no one would bother you all that much," he asked with a nod of a thank you...
"I didn't like the idea of hiding my horns forever, and who knows how people would react... Everyone saw that Dream has horns and instantly started drawing connections to Schlatt and... I don't need to be involved in that, prison doesn't sound fun."
Ranboo could agree with that. He saw the prison a couple of times and it wasn't a good look, he'd rather didn't need one. Techno and Phil didn't seem to care much. "Yeah... So, Dream also has horns... is that a..."
"Older, he's my older brother. I'm pretty sure he's the only reason I'm still alive because Schlatt shouldn't be trusted with a pair of old socks, not to say a child," Tubbo said looking at the sun setting over the cold bay.
That was a good reason to avoid people. Ranboo knew from previous talks with Tubbo that the glamour he used to hide his horns took a lot of energy to keep up if he didn't want anyone bumping into invisible horns. With both Dream and Schlatt's reputations, nothing would keep people from being weird about Tubbo's family tree. People tended to be weird to him about Techno and Phil and he was just living with them, and they weren't as hated as Dream.
"So you hid amongst snow like Technoblade?"
"It worked until Philza left his compass outside his ender chest. And I probably should add that I can do some necromancy."
"Necromancy? Like raise and control undead?"
"Yeah, that's how I brought you here. Even more reason for people to lock me with Dream," Tubbo shrugged. Ranboo just nodded turning his full attention to his bowl. He was going to die. There was no way Tubbo was letting him go with all that knowledge. He was either going to die or be locked here to keep Tubbo company, undead couldn't be good company.
Ranboo didn't die. He and Tubbo had a lovely evening catching up on what happened since Tubbo 'died', he seemed satisfied hearing he's got a monument dedicated to him and a proper funeral. "Wilbur never got a funeral, maybe Phil did something but I don't know."
"He's got a picture of him in his house but that's all I know. He doesn't like talking about Wil."
"I get it. We should probably figure out sleeping arrangements, I don't get many guests here. Only Foolish ever visits me, to bring some supplies and check if I'm still alive and not undead. He's my cousin actually, through Puffy adopting him."
"Wha? Isn't he like a millions of years old god?"
"Puffy's crazy like this. She sees a sad god in conflict with himself after aeons of destroying and adopt him as her son, unfortunately, Schlatt was good at avoiding his sister so Dream and I had to take care of ourselves. Now, where will we be putting you to sleep..."
Ranboo looked at his hands. Could Tubbo know about the possible connection between him and Dream? How closely was he working with Dream during his presidency? Was Tommy's exile really for the good of L'Manburg? How much of that argument in the blown-up community house was honest and how much was acting?
"I know what you're thinking. Did I exile Tommy because of family relations or because I thought it was a good choice for Manburg, and all the other times I had to confront Dream," Tubbo broke him out of his thoughts "I haven't spoken to Dream as my brother, I was angry at him for a lot of that time, ever since... Schlatts presidency was coddling me and trying to push me to stay away from it all. We had our first decent conversation the evening before the final battle, he proposed this whole fake death thing and at that point, I was okay with that 'we'll make them think we're dead and move far from the server, leave looking after every one to XD...', I was looking forward to it you know. Just me and my brother like in the old days, he didn't think the whole server would show up" Ranboo was sure Tubbbo was about to start crying. He had no idea what to do, he saw Tubbo cry a few times during his presidency but it wasn't this direct, he was usually trying to be a tough Mr President people could depend on. Vwoop Awkwardly Ranbbo dragged his friend closer into a hug. He had no idea why, it was an instinct of some sort. To hug Tubbo and let him cry until he's done. Neither of them mentioned the soft purr-like sound Ranboo started making. It was something along cat purring and a much calmer angry enderman noises. "Sorry," Tubbo muttered between soft sobs. Ranboo just purred more and dragged Tubbo to sit on the bed. Soon they both unknowingly fell asleep. Tubbo crying about what could have been and Ranboo purring softly, purple creeping into the edges of his vision.
Just as Ranboo was falling asleep he could swear he heard Dream somewhere in his mind. 'Take care of him for me, beastie.' followed by a slow humming of a lullaby, both familiar and alien to him (A/N: check Ranboo's Lullaby by Hator).
Ranboo got woken up by the sun right into his lidless eyes. Tubbo was still sleeping so he let him be...
"Morning hot stuff," Tubbo muttered from somewhere around Ranboo's chest "We should probably get up and bring you back to Techno and Philza before they notice you're gone," he added with a hint of sadness in his voice.
"I tend to disappear for long periods of time so I think we have some time, you better?" he asked as Tubbo began attempting to get himself out of the cocoon Ranboo became overnight.
"How often does your communicator ping on those days? Every hour?" Tubbo asked pointing to the thing which, as to give his point some weight pinged at that exact moment.
"Should have written to Phil last evening," Ranboo muttered letting Tubbo go, and just as Tubbo went to the other room to start breakfast did he look at his communicator. Fifty messages from Phil and five from Technoblade, all along the lines of 'where are you?' and 'you good, mate?' With a small smile Ranboo replied:
"I'm okay, communicator died for a while on me. Be back home by evening or tomorrow depending on the weather."
"I think we'll have to get me back to Anarchy Town soon, Phil's freaking out," Ranboo said as Tubbo came back with two steaming cups of tea.
"That's too bad, I was hoping to keep you for a bit longer," he was trying to joke but it was obvious he wasn't.
"I can come by from time to time," Ranboo offered with a meek smile, "as long as no one follows me here we should be okay."
"That would be nice, skeleton's aren't very talkative..."
"Whatever you say handsome," Ranboo said smugly,  remembering how Tubbo addressed him earlier.
"You better not be hitting on me, mister," Tubbo feigned being offended as a skeleton brought two identical plates of breakfast with beans, bread, egg, ham and tomatoes. Ranboo looked at Tubbo in distress over the amount of different food on his plate.
"You started flirting first," Ranboo said seeing no sympathy for his weak, brought up on potatoes self.
For a moment they were quiet until Tubbo couldn't stand it anymore. "I'll need more beds if that's the case, and don't bring last night up, that was..."
"That was last night and that's it?" Ranboo proposed with a pretend glare at his food, it was good but he'd never admit it.
"Yes, at least that's something to do. How far do you think your place is from here? You're with Techno and Phil, right? They're also in some snowy hellhole so it can't be all that far, right?" Tubbo agreed.
After a quick check-up with Philza, it was about half a day way in good weather so Tubbo gave Ranboo a lovely tour of Snowchester as he called his one-man colony, and they set out on the long trek to the Anarchy Commune. When the roof of Techno's house could be seen in the distance Tubbo and two skeleton's he dragged with them along the way. "I guess I'll leave you here." As much as they had fun on the way this was suddenly very awkward. "And I'll see you sometime, handsome."
Ranboo laughed awkwardly at the compliment, "I... are you tactically flirting with me?"
"No, I'm going home. So bye, remember to write to me or I'll send an army of skeletons to drag you back or whatever." Tubbo said turning around as not to show how distressed he was.
"Oh, I will call you so you better answer when I do." All seriousness of the statement was lost as both of them burst out laughing.

Wonderland Ball (2/4)
Chapters: 1  2  3  4
previous chapter   next chapter
featuring several characters from other fairy tales!!
-----
The door opened to a maid with a curious face on, “Is everything alright..oh! Miss Audrey, Where did everyone go? I heard something and everything started shaking.”
“Isabella,” she said, “Um...yeah. Everyone just left.”
“Pardon?” she asked, still confused.
Audrey shook her hand, “Nevermind that, we’re spending Christmas Eve without them. So what should we do?”
Deciding not to press on the matter Isabella asked, “This is your first Christmas here in Golden Goose is it not? Last year you all traveled.”
Audrey nodded, “What do you guys usually do around here?”
Isabella smiled “There’s a lovely festival organized by the townspeople! Food as a far as the eye can see, music, children getting presents, colorful lights and trees to decorate...oh my lady, you really must see it, it’s wonderful!”
Audrey thought for a bit before nodding, “That sounds amazing, Isabella. How about a change of location?”
Meanwhile on the far end of the Island the group had resurfaced to a large room. As the purple smoke cleared the group were in their original positions, just in a different setting.
“Were we just transported here?” Merlin looked around. “Is everyone alright?”
“Yeah,” Goldie said, fingers on her temples, “Just a little hazy..”
“This interior looks like the Wonderland Palace.” Gretel said looking around
“So the cat really did bring us all here.” Arthur said.
“All our stuff seems to be here too.” Kio walked around.
“Wait, where’s Audrey?” Jack looked around. The group indeed saw that all of them were here except for her.
“Do you think she got left behind?” Gwen looked left and right.
“That Cat was very particular in singling her out when he was greeting all of us.” Pino thought, “Do you think he left her behind on purpose?”
Jack frowned at that response, to which Pino raised both his hands “I’m just saying that’s a possibility.”
“The doors are locked too.” Briar shook the handles.
“You must first change to your proper attire!”
“Eep!”
Briar jumped back as soon as she saw a little white mouse appear from the keyhole. “Hurry! Quickly! Hastily! The ball is soon! Please change to your highness’ formal attire!” As soon as the mouse had left, thirteen closet doors had opened with their old gowns and uniforms that represented their Kingdom. They always had to wear those whenever there was an audience or social obligations.
“Uh oh..” Peter frowned at his uniform.
It took a bit but they were all able to fit in their outfits. The triplets had matching blue, yellow, and brown uniforms, as did Hans and Gretel with their green, yellow, and brown colors. Merlin’s donned blue as well as a red sash. Snow had blue, yellow, and red. Jack had blue, purple and brown. Arthur had red and orange, Goldie had blue white and yellow, and Peter’s was green and brown. Briar Rose’s dress was interesting as it often changed between pink and blue, depending on how you looked at it.
“Wow, you look like Mama.” Hans looked at Gretel. She looked at him for a bit before looking at herself in the mirror, twirling occasionally,
“Thanks, you look nothing like Papa.”
Hans playfully rolled his eyes as she laughed. On the other end of the room stood Goldie helping Peter with his cuffs. “I don’t understand, what’s not to like? I love my dress, always have.” she said.
“Makes me feel stiff,” Peter told her.
Jack usually looked for any excuse to bring out his uniform, but he wasn’t feeling it very much around this time. And the others could tell once they started making their way to the ballroom and he didn’t gawk at the jewels and roses they had on display.
An uptight looking man donned with a white suit stood beside them as a pair of twins held their hands on the knobs of the double doors. “Ah, finally! You know just because you’re the Island’s greatest heroes, that does not mean you get to be late! Time is of the essence!” the man scolded them. He took out a pocket watch and wiped his forehead, “You just barely made it..” he muttered.
“Get ready,” he quickly made his way to the door as one of the twins opened it for him. The F7 heard his loud voice through the doors.
“Here ye, here ye!”
“Told him his voice was too loud.” one of the twins holding the door handles said.
“Honestly, never listens.” The other responded.
The man's voice continued, “Announcing the arrival of Fairy Tale Island’s greatest and bravest heroes. Who suddenly disappeared but have now resurfaced. The princes who heroically protect this land from danger with their strength, prestigious backgrounds, and talents. The princes’ we have all been awaiting, The Fearless Seven!”
“Let’s go, boys.” Merlin told them.
The twins had opened the door on cue, and as if they were used to this, the F7 had walked in the ballroom with an overwhelming amount of presence. Their perfect formation and aura as a group lived up to their reputation. And the fact that they have been gone for years only made their entrance bigger, as this was their first formal reappearance.
“Prince Arthur, Prince Hansel, Prince Kio, Prince Noki, Prince Pino, Prince Jack, and their leader, Prince Merlin!”
Familiar faces to them were around the room, faces they had only seen occasionally but knew each other from previous balls. Faces that were now in awe, some princes and princesses looking at them with lovestruck gazes, some that were much too happy with their reappearance, and others who couldn’t believe they were in the same room as them.
And although they knew better now, they would be lying if they said they didn’t miss this just a little bit.
Once they had reached the altar, they knelt on one knee, put their right hand on their chests, and bowed their heads in perfect synchronization to the woman sitting on the throne.
“Queen Alice, it is an honor to be here. You have my gratitude for extending the invitation to us.” Merlin said with his head down.
Her Majesty warmly smiled, “Nonsense, it is my honor to have you here at my party. I’m glad Cheshire convinced you all to be here, I wasn’t sure if he’d be successful!” she lightly laughed. To her right was the gentleman Chesire Cat who only grinned at her, and to her left was the person who everyone knew to be the Mad Hatter, who rolled his eyes at the man. “Please, raise your heads.” Alice told them.
They did as she said and stood up from her throne. “Everyone! Please join me in giving a warm round of applause to our Island’s greatest heroes. The Fearless Seven!”
After the formalities were over, the F7 had made their way back to their friends. “Wow, some introduction they gave you guys.” Gretel rolled her eyes.
“Oh don’t be jealous, Gret.” Hans handed her a drink.
“I’m not jealous.” she frowned at him.
“She is, she looks at me the same way whenever I finish repairing something faster than her.” Pino laughed.
“Gretel? I’ve missed you!” a woman with the longest braid they had seen walked up to them.
“Rapunzel? Wow, it’s been so long.” Gretel greeted her former neighbor.
“Aw Hans look at you!” Rapunzel cooed at the ginger haired boy who sheepishly rubbed the back of his hair, “You’re so big now! I remember when me and your sister used to dress you up in my old clothes when you were a baby. We used to put all sorts of accessories on him,” she then suddenly remembered, “We called him Princess Hannah!”
Gretel gasped and grinned at her brother, “Oh my god, Princess Hannah. I forgot about that!” Hans’ smile had only morphed in disapproval when he heard the name. Briar Rose listened in to the conversation, a mischievous gleam in her eyes.
“Wait is this why I get scared when I smell freshly made leather bracelets? And why I hate the sounds of corsets? Gretel that caused me trauma.” he told her.
She scoffed, “Yeah, you're the one who has PTSD between the both of us.” to which Hans frowned at, “Kidding, kidding,” she told him, “So are you here with anyone Raps?”
“Yeah, my cousins are here. The Snow Queen and her sister.” she gestured to the other side of the room.
“Look at all the royalty here,” Jack said in awe, “I almost forgot what it feels like.”
Arthur took a sip of the champagne, “Ten o’clock. Snow Queen is approaching you.”
“Hm?”
Jack looked towards the woman with the white gown who curtsied in front of him, “Prince Jack, a pleasure to see you.”
Jack returned the gesture by kissing her hand, “Your Majesty, I am honored by your presence.”
She smiled and averted her gaze slightly, “Forgive me for being so blunt, but I want to ask, have you met a man that goes by Jack Frost?”
Jack humored her by rolling his eyes, “I want to tell you I haven’t, Your Majesty. Unfortunately the opposite is true.”
The Snow Queen let out a giggle as her eyes began to quite literally sparkle with tiny snowflakes, “Do you see him often? What is he like? Oh! Does he do that thing where he balances on his staff then pretends to fall, only to surprise you from behind?”
“I would be mortified if he ever did that to me. Do you know him?” he asked her.
“A little,” she bashfully tucked her long white hair behind her ear. It was a sight for Jack and Arthur as they had always expected the Snow Queen to be serious and formal. “He comes by my castle sometimes, and oh, we have the loveliest conversations but they’re always cut so short.”
“If I may be so bold, Your Majesty, I’d say you fancy the lad.” Arthur smiled.
“Fancy? Me?” At Arthur’s suggestion she laughed and accidentally froze his drink with her hands, “Oh, sorry. But I don’t know what you're talking about, Prince Arthur. What a silly imagination you have. Excuse me.” she bowed smiling. But not soon before she mumbled to Jack, “Please mention me next time? Thank you, Your Highness.” and she ran off to her sister.
“I wanted to tell her ‘run away’.” Jack sipped his drink.
“Arthur!” Merlin called out from behind, “You remember these buffoons don’t you?”
“Shut it, Merlin. I’ll throw you off the balcony again.” Edmund laughed as he gently pushed the wizard.
“Arthur! You’ve gained weight!” Peter punched his chest, “Oof, nevermind.”
Arthur laughed and pulled him in for hugs, “Oh I’ve missed you jackasses too.”
“Hello, Prince Arthur,” two ladies stood beside Merlin.
Susan smiled, “You and Merlin are still getting along well, I’m glad.”
“We caught up with Gwen earlier, I’m so happy for you two!” Lucy beamed.
“Ah, meeting the two fairest ladies in all of Narnia, and now their brave and heroic sisters Susan and Lucy. Seeing all four of you brings tears to my eyes.” Arthur dramatically said, followed up by an angry Peter and Edmund trying to bring him down.
“Well look at that. I’m not surprised to see Arthur being beaten up by a bunch of princes at a ball.” Goldie noted.
Peter Pan laughed, “I’ll say, it wouldn’t be a shock if he got kicked out early by destroying Queen Alice’s tea set.”
The triplets let out a loud laughter and spilled their drinks on the carpeted floor.
“Boys, I am quite disappointed.”
The familiar voice that reached the triplets' ears immediately made them stand up straight as they quickly removed their hats.
“Honestly, making a scene like that. Your father was right to send me here.” a man in a black coat and blue top hat held his head high as he examined the boys one by one. “Good posture, clear skin...oh your hair is a mess, Kio.” he rubbed Kio’s blind hair with his hands. “Mind your manners, boys.”
“Yes, Jiminy...” they let out a dragged response to which Jiminy eyed them and they said a clearer response, “Yes, Jiminy, sir.”
“Good, I suppose these are your beloveds, Noki and Kio.” he looked at the pair, “Princess Goldilocks and Peter Pan.”
“Oh thank god you got my name right.” Peter sighed in relief.
“I hope my boys have been treating you well. I did not raise them to act otherwise. Thank you for blessing them with your affections”
Noki and Kio flushed a bright red when they heard that, “C’mon, Jiminy. Stop that, nobody says that anymore!” Noki frowned at him.
“Afraid I’m embarrassing you in front of your girlfriend, Noki?” he raised his eyebrows and proceeded to whisper to Goldie, “When he was younger he had problems wetting the bed at night. Use that information however you please.” to which she let out a laugh.
“Oh I will definitely use that as ammunition.” she told him.
“Have you met Gretel, Jiminy?” Pino asked.
“Oh, red hair, glasses? I met her earlier along with Princess Snow White. Lovely woman, polite manners, well done.” Jiminy responded, “If I’m not mistaken that's her and Princess Rapunzel chasing Prince Hansel, am I right?”
Pino raised eyebrows before putting his hat back on, “Should probably see what that's about…” and ran off.

Tips on how to Choose Canvas Artwork On your Household
Tumblr media
large canvas wall art
The keys to achievement are determining what type of canvas art you like, the way it will compliment your present-day interior layout, and how to exhibit the
art print to the most effective influence in your house.
There are several essential aspects you require to take into consideration when choosing canvas artwork; Colour Dimension & Shape Style & Subject
Colour
Picking art that is color coordinated with your own home.
When selecting a canvas art print to match an existing colour with your room, select one or two of the boldest, most prominent colours within your room and look for artwork that has those colours in it. You’re not looking for an exact colour match here. Simply picking up one or two similar colours will send a message that the canvas belongs in this environment. The psychology of color.
Color is very powerful. Psychologists believe it can influence our moods and exactly how we feel about spending time in a particular room. When picking your canvas think about what mood or feeling you want the art to create…
Brown and shades of brown (beige, coffee, coco etc), is neutral, warm, and homely. Brown instils calm, comfort, tranquillity and harmony. All great moods for any room in the property, but especially good for adding a relaxed feel to living rooms and bedrooms.
Red is sexy, chic, warm and modern. It symbolizes passion, activity and excitement, it catches the eye and stimulates the mind. Great for brightening up dull, dreary rooms, rousing appetites in dining rooms and kitchens, and quickening the pulse in the bedroom…
Orange is young, sunny, happy and carefree. Bold, warm and energetic it uplifts the mood, inspires activity and promotes well-being. Ideal for brightening kitchens, hallways and children’s rooms or for adding a wow-factor to a living or dining room.
Yellow is bright, clean, warm and cheerful. It increases energy, promotes happiness and stirs the creative juices. Good for adding light and energy to bathrooms and kitchens, as well as being a great colour for a bold canvas to lift the mood of a dull, poorly lit room.
Green is soothing, reassuring, and natural. It refreshes and rejuvenates and instils a feeling of vibrancy, cleanliness, health and well-being. Ideal for rooms to relax in – such as bedrooms, bathrooms and conservatories.
Blue is calming, clean, soothing and cool. The world’s favourite color represents sky and water. It relaxes the mind, refreshes and produces tranquil feelings and peaceful moods. Ideal in any room to promote relaxation and peace.
Purple and violet suggests grandeur, glamour and opulence. Modern, rich and indulgent it encourages creativity, and adds luxury and comfort. Deep purples are rich and dreamy whilst lighter violets are feminine and chic . Superb color for the modern bedroom, living room or snug.
Pink is feminine, romantic and luxurious. It lightens the mood and encourages affection. Adds a tranquil and calming feeling to a room. Ideal in bedrooms.
White and cream is pure, stylish and goes with everything. It amplifies the effects of other colours as well as radiating peace, purity and clarity. An ideal choice for any room.
Black is sleek, strong and elegant. The ultimate timeless, neutral color, it implies strength, authority and boldness of character. A classic colour choice for the modern hallway, living room and dining room.
Other types of mood setting colours. The following colour schemes also invoke particular moods and portray a certain style….
Greyscale and Sepia is the subtle, aged look found on old and black and white photographs. It’s used in modern art and photography to remove the impact of colour, allowing the subject of the canvas to take centre stage. Great for interesting and thought provoking pieces of artwork.
Good conversation started in dining rooms, kitchens and living rooms.
Multi-coloured art gives a bold, bright and modern look. Rainbow colours can add a feeling of fun, humour and boldness to a room.
Hard to miss, bright multi-coloured artwork is a great centre piece and conversation starter. It also portrays a certain confidence of character of its buyer…
Dimensions & Shape
The second thing to look at after colour is measurement and shape. Get this wrong and even a canvas print that perfectly matches the decor and style of your room can look totally out of place.
Getting the measurement right
Your canvas art should look in proportion to the wall space it occupies and the surrounding furnishings. If its too big it is going to overwhelm, if it’s too small then it is going to look lost.
Its a good idea not to pack your art into alcoves, or narrow walls. Try to always leave at least 20 to 30cm (8″ to 12″ inches) gap around the canvas and the surrounding walls and ceiling. Your canvas will usually look good when placed centrally (horizontally) on a wall with the vertical centre of the canvas at eye level. If your canvas is large then it’s often not possible to have the centre at eye level, but you should still be able to gauge a good height for maximum outcome.
A big canvas can look great above a sofa, or fireplace. Small canvases look great in small alcoves, in bathrooms, kitchens and hallways.
Smaller matching canvases also look great hung together in 2’s, 3’s or 4’s.
Getting the shape right
Basically, if you want to play safe, go square. A square print, if the right size shouldn’t look out of place no matter where it’s placed. If you want a rectangular print then you’ll need to contemplate a few other factors. A landscape style print (one that’s wider than it is tall) goes well above a bed, a fire place, sideboard, or sofa. Portrait style print (one that’s taller than it is wide) goes well in alcoves, hallways, stairways and narrow walls between doors and windows.
A basic rule of thumb is; match the canvas height and width ratio on the height and width ratio of the wall. For example if you have wall space
above your fireplace that’s 2 metres wide and 1.5 metres high then a landscape print will look good, but a tall print on this space may look out of place.
You can also use multiple prints to create a landscape or portrait effect. For example you can hang 3 coordinated square prints closely together above a sofa. This is often a great way to give your canvas art a real ‘wow factor’.
Style & Subject
Styles of canvas artwork To be honest when selecting the style and subject of your canvas print then it’s all down to personal taste. But here are a few guidelines;
Think about the style of your furniture and decor.

Nightmares: A Frit oneshot!
I decided to do a little writing! This is just a simple Fritters piece, but I hope it’s alright, lol. ;3
It was a peaceful, calm summers night. The sky was cloudless, the moon was glistening against it, and billions of blazing ambers danced around the dark sheet. And the air was warm, bringing about dry throats for some and comforting slumbers for others. It gave a sense of bliss, a sense of change.
But for some people…. change wasn’t always expected. Which brings us to a small, two story house within the confinement of a small woods. It was a nice place, nothing exotic or cabin-like. But it sat on a small hill, just a couple miles away from a bright city. The city was visible from that hill, but only if one were to venture to edge and peer over and across a wide landscape littered with trees and grasses, which sat underneath a canvas of glowing stars. It was like the Gods of each and every generation over the trillions of years of the universes existence took turns, and blasted a twinkling speck into space that would forever shine brightly for all to see and admire. It truly was a grand, luminescent night.
But that brings us back to the main focus of this small story. Because sometimes, the night doesn’t always feel so grand and luminescent for everyone. Instead, it can be dark and haunting, like reoccurring nightmares. Which is what one being had to experience on this summer night.
His name was Frost. He was a short fellow, not as tall as you might imagine him. He wasn’t overly complicated but he didn’t express everything he had to show about himself. When he did show certain attributes to his personality or talents, they weren’t always what most would expect. And if he were to tell you a story of his own, it may be a tale from his past. Whether it be a short experience or an entire book, he’d be sure to add at least a little sugarcoating. Which is why he doesn’t normally tell stories anyway. So, we’re here to read about a certain one that happens to him now and again. A story about his unfortunate nightmares. But this involves a specific nightmare in particular, and the way he overcomes it.
It begins inside the small house he calls home. The interior of such a place is rather fancy, but it’s not extreme or thrown out there. Instead, it’s cozy and rustic. A little urban, but that’s only natural.
Frost was headed to bed. He took a relieving shower to tenderize his sore muscles he had earned for the day. He allowed himself to bask in the warmth and wetness of the shower head, his skin getting pelted by soaring water droplets. When he emerged from his washing off, his body dripped. He instinctively retrieved a towel from the bathroom counter, which he had folded and set out for himself. And he chose to wear that towel on his way to his bedroom, which he shared with an unlikely fellow. Although, the term fellow is a bit of an understatement.
The mans name was Hit. He held an intimidating stature, and he was much taller than Frost. He wasn’t very social, but he always held a sense of intensity and intrigue in his red eyes. He was an assassin though, so go figure. And being an assassin, he had work almost 24/7. But not tonight. Tonight, he took the day off to spend time with his significant other, who’s name was no other than Frost. The space pirate himself, who shared a bed with a guy that kills for a living. Luckily, Hit was actually pretty docile for his choice of gaining payment. Frost however wasn’t as much so, but he knew better than a lot of people so that’s a plus.
And so, Frost let himself into the bedroom casually, glancing to the side to see Hit lounging in bed, waiting for his arrival. They smiled at eachother once the lizard entered their room. Frost didn’t bother with changing out into anything though, he hardly even wore much each day. The main thing he usually wore was a pair of black spandex pants, which he used constantly. But they weren’t necessary for bedtime, see he tossed the towel to the side and stepped over to the bed. He sighed as he slipped himself underneath the soft, plush fabric covers. The blankets were almost like quilts, but they didn’t have any fancy or colorful designs on them. Which was okay, Hit and him didn’t mind. And the assassin himself didn’t mind it when his partner moved to snuggle against him, purring with tired affection. It made Hit feel happy to have someone to live with after all his years of working alone. Now he had someone to care for and be around. And he was grateful for that.
The two of them simply layed there together. They didn’t exchange many words, and if they did, they were whispered. But that didn’t bother the couple.
And so, Hit held Frost close to his chest, his strong arms wrapping around the others slim frame. Frost was a little feminine in appearance, but he rarely got called out for it. If he was, Hit would surely punch a man. He loved the Ice-jins huggable body, it was so small. At least, it was to the hitman. And being a hitman, it was obvious that he had strength. But Hit never let his power get the best of him, he was able to control it. If he was incapable of taming his strength, the small male in his grasp would surely get crushed in his sleep. But that wouldn’t happen, thankfully.
And so, after a while, both Frost and Hit found themselves sleeping soundly, side-by-side. This wasn’t anything new, they enjoyed sleeping together. And, it was expected anyways since they were involved with eachother romantically. Their relationship was a bit of a strange one, what with Hit being someone who kills criminals for a living and Frost being a criminal himself. But, Frost was slowly learning to forget his street life days, having been on the run for almost an entire year. He had managed to survive on his own for a good while, before Hit found him alone in a dark alleyway during a frightful rainstorm. They quickly got use to eachother, although Frost was simply acting docile out of fear at the time. Later on afterwards, they developed an understanding and respect for eachother, until feelings began to emerge. That was when the two fighters chose to settle down and adapt to a new life together. Now Frost doesn’t have his fears of the assassin, but he still remembers faint moments when his life wasn’t always the best. And a painful memory surfaced on this night, as the Ice-jin was snoozing quietly with soft snores.
It happened in a dream. His vision was fuzzy at first, a blank space of emptiness. The lizard couldn’t tell what was going on at first. But then, slowly but surely, the white space began to tear. Like paper, it split in half, seeming to rip apart before Frosts eyes. And it seemed to happen so fast and unexpectedly, before Frost found himself falling into a black void of endless dark and silence. He couldn’t find his voice to scream, as he stared up at nothing. But even with his reflexes muted, the pirate could still feel invisible walls caving in, and he had the sense that something was coming closer. He could hear his heart ramming into his skull, as a sudden ringing invaded his ears. He winced like it was an audible dog whistle.
Suddenly, he felt it. It was almost instant, but his back soon collided into the ground. The collision knocked the wind out of him, and if it were any harder of a hit, he would’ve been knocked out for sure. But now, he layed motionless, his eyes shut as he slowly let his senses return to him. He could’ve sworn he heard something crack when he landed, but perhaps it was the surface he was now sprawled out on. And as he layed there momentarily, he heard distant voices. Familiar distant voices, roaring out like battle cries. He couldn’t make them out but he recognized them. And it was after what felt like a few minutes of listening to them, did he finally open his eyes and glance around. He found himself staring up at space, but once he managed to turn his head, he realized he was on a planet. A small, red planet. He soon came to realization of where he was, causing him to sit up slowly. He bit his lip as his shoulders ached and his arms shook to support his upper body until he could stand. He groaned as he forced himself to his feet, wobbling on his legs before he found his way of balance.
He panted lightly, looking around to get a better idea of his location. He was back at Champas tournament. And those voices he had heard from before were the calls and yells of fighters from both his team and Universe 7, fighting for the ownership of Earth. And for a small second, Frost forgot about his dramatic ordeal during his current moment, as he stood in front of Champas cube, seeming to be intent on stealing it for himself. Champa was a fat cat God of another universe, Universe 6, and to this day Frost still liked to address him as that. Especially since it was true. The purple feline never had much sympathy for anyone but himself, he was spoiled and greedy. And looking at his cube now made Frost grimace with distaste. He could care less about stealing it now, he didn’t want it anymore. But not everyone knew that.
As the pirate stood there, staring, he couldn’t help but feel like he was being watched. And he quickly found out that his feelings were right, when he heard the sound of approaching footsteps. Caught off guard, he turned around in their direction, narrowing his eyes. Suddenly, a tall, intimidating, and all too familiar figure appeared in front of the Ice-jin. Frosts eyes widened. “….Hit?” He whispered out in question, staring at the purple man. He took a step back as he noticed the intense stare he was receiving from the assassin, who’s hands were in his trench coat pockets, as he stood there quietly. For a moment, Frost wasn’t sure how to act. He knew why the man was there, but it had been so long since this moment happened between them that the lizard couldn’t decide if he should let it play out or not. All he felt was fear and confusion, as he watched Hit step closer. Frost bit his lip. He attempted to speak with the male, but it was as if Hit couldn’t hear him at all. “H-Hit, it’s me! Look, I’m not interested in the cube, I swear! Listen, you don’t have t-” but he was cut off from his statement, as the hitman wasted no time in activating his time-skip. Within a second, their surroundings became coated in colorful, crystal-like patterns that swiftly moved to cover everything in sight in just the blink of an eye. Frost gasped as he felt his body suddenly freeze for just a split second, before Hit launched himself towards his smaller form, striking his pressure points. When it was over, Frost cried out in shock, as his limbs soon became useless, his mind thinking frantically as everything, his body, his heart, all of it seemed to become paralyzed before he collapsed to his knees. His eyes were on the visible verge of tears, as he slowly succumbed to darkness. “H-Hit….” he muttered breathlessly, before his body fell to the hard earth.
Frost woke up instantly in a cold sweat, as he screamed out in distress. Anxiety took over, as he was urged awake by the horrific nightmare. But he wasn’t the only one who was stirred from sleep. Hit instinctively yelled in surprise, quickly springing up and looking around. But he was met with the unfortunate sight of a scared, clearly disturbed con-artist, who sat in a ball next to him. Hit looked at Frost with concern, his eyes filled with worry. “Frost?” He said slowly, placing a hand on his partners shoulder. “Are you ok?” He asked. Frost sniffled a light sob, wiping his tears before turning his face to look at him. He stared at Hit for a short moment, doing nothing but holding his eyesight to the assassin. Then, he let out a shaky sigh, as he nodded slowly. The dream he had shook him and made him feel vulnerable, but he soon managed to relax his mind to settle down. He tried to catch his breath, his heartbeat calming. But, he couldn’t help but dig his hands into the blanket, as he stared down in deep thought. Hit watched him closely, making an assumption on what happened. He looked at Frost softly. “…did you have that dream again?” He asked, his voice low and caring. Frost always found it to be filled with a sense of sympathy and comfort, so low and reassuring. The assassin always sounded like he knew what he was doing, and it made Frost feel safer just to hear the sound of him. Just as it did now, as the Ice-jin listened to the calm words that Hit spoke to him. He glanced up at the other man weakly. “…Yeah.” He answered, sadness in his tone. And that answer was all Hit needed to reach over and pull Frost into an affectionate, loving embrace. He let the pirate bury his face into his chest for warmth and safety, before coiling his arms firmly around the smaller males practically trembling form. He began rocking back and forth slowly, his eyes closed. “Shhh, it’s ok. It was only a nightmare Frost, you know that. It wasn’t real.” He muttered. Frost clung to him tightly. “It hurts…” he responded almost helplessly. And it was true, it was painful. The idea of dreaming about the one he loved most almost killing him without a problem, without any words, as if he didn’t matter was heartbreaking. It was his most hated nightmare, and despite the fact he’s had it more than once, he somehow always got caught by surprise at the outcome of it. Which was scary for him, obviously.
But, he was thankful that he had small solutions for it. It was temporary, but it helped a lot mentality wise. The feeling of big, warm hands gently caressing his back, as he was held in a protective embrace was greatly reassuring that his nightmare wouldn’t come true. They helped him to overcome that feeling of loneliness, sadness, and the feeling of being exposed or vulnerable. Because if he was capable of feeling the fingertips of a man like Hit against his skin each night, why should he have to feel such insecurities? He was loved by someone much stronger than he was but never took it for granted. And Hit cared for him despite their differences, so he was happy and content. Which is why Frost stopped over thinking his nightmares as time went by. They were just ways of his criminal self trying to stab him in the back for falling in love with someone who could kill him, someone he use to dislike enough to attack and try to poison in an alleyway. But now he was in a position to do that, as his thinner frame was tucked away in the assassins arms. He could poison him if he wanted, or he could at least try with a higher rate of success. Hit trusted him not to, so how hard could it be now? And that’s the question that caused the Ice-jin to stay true to his emotions. He finally had someone who trusted him after all this time. He had someone who loved and respected him, and out of all the people it could be, it was the universe 6s Legendary Assassin! Frost couldn’t act against that fact, it would be a downright pathetic and idiotic idea. He liked Hit just fine, so it’s not like he’d WANT to intoxicate him now anyway. And he never would, he’d make sure of that.
So now, he sat here. His head was rested calmly against Hits chest, as he listened to his lovers heartbeat. The slow, intense beating acted almost like a type of lullaby for the lizard. It helped him to be put at ease and forget his worries. He listened to it, the sound of a strong heart inside of a strong man. It was perfect. Just the known fact that he was still alive to experience a bonding moment like this was great. It was relaxing and a little bittersweet. He felt snug and cozy in Hits hug, as his body was now being pretty much held in the larger mans grasp. Hit had moved into a crisscross position, so he could have Frost sitting in his lap like it were a nest. He was pleased to find that his little strategy worked, as the con-artist was now purring softly into him.
The assassin smiled, looking down at his partner with bright, alerted eyes. He loved to watch when Frost slept. The pirates face just looked so innocent and tender when he was resting. Hit always found it so nice to look at, and he wondered now and again if Frost had watched him when he himself slept. If so, he hoped that the short male liked his facial appearance as much as he admired his. Although, looks rarely mattered to the hitman. He was the type of guy who always figured that personality was worth more than good looks. But to him, Frost was the full package. His body was curvy and cute, his big, ruby colored eyes were like mini sunsets, and the way that the Ice-jin seemed to look up to Hit filled him with a warmth that no burning fire could match. He thought the man was stunning, and he was glad he took him in from the streets. Frost needed the assassin as much as he needed Frost. It was like an odd, yet uniquely cooperating connection they both shared.
Finally, after a few long minutes, the purple fighter carefully slid Frost back under the confinements of the blanket. He delicately covered himself back up as well, before scooching in to remake his embrace around the crafty lizard. He sighed out in pleasant serenity, as the sounds of the night continued on outside. There was a ghostly fog that seemed to have laced the prickly grass in an eerie sheet, which took its time to spread across the surrounding hill. Hit knew it would be gone by morning, but there wasn’t anything to be concerned about anyways. So, he planted a feathery kiss on Frosts forehead with a grin, before resuming his late night fatigue. “Goodnight Frost…” he whispered, as his subconscious began to drag him into the realm of dreaming. And from that moment on, it was a goodnight indeed.

Light Me Up | Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Pairing: Vernon x OFC featuring S.Coups & Jeonghan
Genre: angst, fluff, humor
Word Count: 4539
[ Chapters: 1 | 2 | 3 ] + Moodboard
Summary:  Just as the moon had her scars and imperfections, so did she. And he loved every bit of it. To him, she was the moon that shone brightest in these rare moments. The moon who’s light had been dimmed. To her, he was the sun that would eventually, light her up in every way. Only she hadn’t accepted it yet. She hadn’t yet accepted the light slowly growing inside her chest, but it wouldn’t be long until she did.
“If you can love the wrong one so much, just imagine how much you can love the right one.”
A/N: I don’t even know how to start this note lol. It has been too long since I posted chapter 1 and I apologize greatly for not posting this sooner. I had the worst writer’s block! I would like to thank my lovely secret admirer Vernon anon for giving me that little spark of inspiration that I needed. A huge, enormous thank you to my @kaviea ! You are the best! This would be nothing without your help. Thank you! Once again, forgive me for not posting sooner, so here’s basically a double chapter for y’all. I hope you enjoy!
By the time she got up to her apartment the morning light had already crept into her living room. The light shone through her window, making her realize she’d forgotten to pull down her blinds.
She kicked off her boots and hung her coat by the door, making her way into the bathroom. A warm shower was exactly what she needed right now.
Her makeup needed to be washed off first. Applying makeup was something she’d do every weekend, and sometimes she really hated the trouble that went with it. She mostly hated having to look into the mirror in order to remove it and seeing a bleary-eyed reflection of herself. She was tired of washing off the same unyielding eyeshadow and mascara over and over again. Although taking the makeup off was a pain, it wasn’t as hard as applying it, and it was worth it, as the makeup did make her feel prettier. But it was still something that she’d rather not do routinely.
Eventually, she got out of the shower, put on her PJs and walked over to the window to roll down her blinds. Taking a look outside, she saw Vernon. He still sat at the bus stop, wearing his red cap and rubbing his bare hands together frantically.
She opened the window and called out to him, “Hey! What are you still doing there? The bus should’ve come and gone a while ago.”
He looked around, shrugged and was about to reply when she noticed how he was shivering. Decided, she beckoned a couple of times for him to get up and told him to make his way across the road.
“Apartment 3A.”
He stopped warming his hands together and went completely still. “What?”
“Get up here,” she added before closing the window and pulling down the blinds. She never considered that he might not come up into the apartment of an older woman who he had just met.
He hesitated for a bit, surprised by the fact that she had popped her head out of a window and invited him up to her apartment like that. As cold as it was, though, he eventually got off the bench and crossed the road.
She scanned her living room, making sure it looked presentable, but her eyes, in their mad dash around the room, crashed to stop on her coffee table.
It was a mess of bills for the club, so she kneeled down and frantically started gathering them up.
“Shit!” she hissed, jerking her hand away. Of course, she’d managed to get a paper cut now of all times. The doorbell rang and she quickly shoved the papers into the first drawer she saw, closed it hastily, and made her way to the door.
When she unlocked the door, both of them unconsciously ran their eyes over each other from top to bottom.
He stood in the doorway, his hands shoved into the pockets of his bomber jacket. She noticed how his nose and ears were slightly pink from the cold. The cap wasn’t doing a good job of keeping him warm, and neither was the jacket.
He, on the other hand, noticed her completely different outfit. It never occurred to him to picture her wearing something other than her chic black dress. He was pleasantly surprised that she owned anything as comfy-looking as those PJs, but now that he had seen her in them, it somehow fit. It pleasantly surprised him and he couldn’t help but smile. Was this what she was really like beneath her controlled professional appearance? He found that he desperately wanted to know.
His smile grew even more when she tucked that same lock of hair behind her ear. Only now, her hair wasn’t in a neat ponytail, but in a messy bun. Her locks were dripping with water and her face was bare.
“You coming in?” she asked, as she pushed that stubborn lock of hair behind her ear yet again.
He nodded a couple of times and shuffled into her apartment, mumbling an apology.
“Were you a dollar short again?” she teased. “Or did the bus not come at all?”
He ran his fingers through his brown hair and admitted with a sheepish grin, “Both.”
His grin softened something in her expression, and she chuckled quietly. He felt a little strange, standing in her living room like that, not knowing where to go, but strangely feeling like he very much wanted to belong there, until she pointed to the couch.
“You can sit down there. Just take your shoes off here,” she said. “You can stay until Coups answers his phone if you like. You look like you could use some sleep and the bus certainly doesn’t look like it’s coming anytime soon.”
“That’d be nice, thanks, but I wouldn’t want to overstay my welcome. The bus ought to be along any minute now,” he replied.
She didn’t mind him staying. It was just a gesture of kindness in her mind. She wouldn’t be able to sleep if she thought he was freezing to death outside waiting for a bus that was never coming.
“Don’t worry. You’re not,” she shook her head and extended a hand to take his jacket from him. Their hands brushed and she gasped, “Oh my God! Vernon, your hands are like ice!”
He ignored what she said, as his eyes had dropped to her finger with the paper cut, “You’re bleeding!”
“Shit, I forgot.” Instead of going to find her first aid kit, she hung up his jacket on one of the hooks near the door and went into her bedroom.
He was still staring at his jacket next to her coat when a minute later she came out holding a soft purple blanket. It wasn’t folded but rolled into a mess of a ball. She awkwardly dropped it onto him where he was sitting and hurried to her drawers that stood near the window. “I’ll make you some tea in a minute,” she added.
He watched her as she carefully rubbed ointment on her finger. Then, she neatly wrapped a band-aid around it, tucked the first aid kit back into the top drawer and peered out the window. The wind outside was stubbornly pushing the trees back and forth and the streets were empty.
“I don’t think the bus will be coming anytime soon and the wind just got worse. Why don’t you wait this out and get some rest? I’ll get your tea now. Make yourself at home.”
The way she talked to him, it was like he was her longtime neighbor and friend. There was no awkwardness or typical fear of a stranger. He felt warm and welcome. It was something he hadn’t felt in a long time.
She handed him a cup of warm tea, wished him a good night (morning) and shuffled away into her bedroom nonchalantly.
He watched her take those couple of steps towards her bedroom door, smiling to himself. She looked so comfortable and happy. A huge contrast to the girl he met at the club. That girl was a polished piece of perfection, but this one, this girl was clumsy enough to injure her finger while picking papers off her coffee table at 5 am in the morning and then treat the tiniest wound like she was a nurse in training. This girl openly invited him into her home and made him tea, keeping him warm and comfortable.
What was astounding, was that she was the same girl. He wondered which side was the real her and why she appeared so different from the first time they met. There were a million questions in his head, but he tried not to think too much. Regardless of which girl was the “real” one, he liked them both.
His eyes were shutting and his body was filled with drowsiness, but, he pulled out his notepad and scrawled down a couple more words before sleep overtook him.
Does she love me Does she love me not I am counting flower petals all day long Does she love me Does she love me not What will the petals answer to me?
In a few hours, he woke up. Now that he was wide-awake, he rose from the couch and took a few steps around the living room.
The place smelled like freshly ground coffee and chocolates. It must have been the scented candles, which were neatly positioned on the shelves, he thought.
It was a small, but comfy space. There were two doors. One that led to her bedroom and the other, which he assumed led to the bathroom. The way to the kitchen was just an opening in the wall.
In contrast to her dark clothes and makeup, the interior of her place was much lighter. In a corner, there was the bright blue three-seater couch that he’d just slept on. It stood next to an ever brighter pink armchair. The drawers that’d she’d rummaged through earlier stood next to her window, which had its blinds pulled down. Amongst the many shelves filled with books, boxes, and DVDs there was a TV positioned right across from the seating area.
One shelf particularly stood out, as it was wrapped in fairy lights. Stepping a little closer, he noticed that it was stacked with movies, some dating back to the 90s. He lightly ran his fingers across the endless boxes, mouthing the titles of the movies that he recognized.
He stopped at one particular spot, reading the words on the box to himself, “School of Performing Arts - Seoul.”
As if struck by a sudden realization, he decided to pull the box out and take a closer look. It was a simple black DVD box, labeled as “SOPA. Annual Talent Show.” There were a couple more similar boxes that stood next to it on the shelf, dating back two years.
The sudden creak of the door made him turn his head towards the noise. She was awake. She wore the same clothes from early morning, but now, a silky lavender robe hugged her shoulders. Groggy from her sleep, she mumbled, “Hey.”
“Hey,” he echoed.
“Find anything interesting?” she asked softly, pointing at the box in his hands.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to snoop, but...” he hesitated, but continued, “...you didn’t say you attended.” He held up the DVD. It was more of a question than a statement, as he remembered the things he told her a few hours ago. She never mentioned that she had attended his dream school.
“So that was the dream school you were talking about,” she replied with an ever softer voice. One that was barely heard. “I didn’t realize.”
“I dropped out anyway,” she added, lowering her gaze.
His eyes widened, “You dropped out?! Why?!”
To him, it seemed like something almost impossible. He couldn’t comprehend how someone like her would leave something like that behind.
“It doesn’t matter. I just left and didn’t go back,” she sighed and shook her head, refusing to tell him anything else.
She’d met Jeonghan at that same school. It was her first week there along with Seungcheol. They’d both applied and had been accepted for showing exceptional talent. Most of her breaks were spent with Seungcheol in the cafeteria or roaming around the campus.
One day, when Seungcheol had to stay home, she decided to wander the corridors of the campus. It wasn’t too long until she heard the sound of someone singing through the thin walls.
The noise came from the auditorium. She made her way towards the door and quietly went inside. The lights were dimmed and the only one who stood on stage, was him, Yoon Jeonghan, the talented senior that everyone talked about, the one with the voice of an angel.
He didn’t notice her at first, so she chose to sit down in one of the comfy chairs at the far back. She sat there and listened for a while. His voice had hypnotized her, but it wasn’t the only thing that caught her attention.
His hair stood out the most. It was onyx black and pulled into a short ponytail, with not a strand out of place. He wore an elegant white button-up and sleek black pants. His patent leather shoes were polished to perfection. He had the aura of a sleazy rich boy, or so everyone said.
When the music came to a halt, she found him directly looking at her. Despite the distance between them, she felt his gaze to be piercing and yet gentle. In that moment, she somehow knew that this young man would be the end of her.
It was love at first sight, a true fairytale. “Prince Jeonghan,” she’d call him. She was overwhelmed with feelings towards him and much to her joy at the time, he’d soon returned them without hesitation. Looking back, she knew that their relationship consisted of late night drives and dates that lasted hours. Some nights they’d lay on the bed in his apartment in Seoul, talking about little nothings including what their days were like in college.
It was everything she’d ever wanted. It was perfectly perfect. But it wasn’t.
And in another year, she would quit her school, move to New York, and become a completely different, secluded person. She would hide away her traitorous heart that she once so eagerly wore on her sleeve. She would forget about ever performing again.
But for now, she lived her fairy tale happily, unaware of the near future.
The way Vernon talked about attending that school, made her feel guilty for quitting. But she’d never let him know the real reason why.
They stood in silence as the memories ran through her head. Vernon looked genuinely shocked but didn’t try to ask any more questions. Somehow, he understood that it wasn’t money that held her back. It was principle.
Her ringtone cut through the awkward silence. S.Coups finally called back.
“Heeeeey,” he said in the most innocent tone he could before she could flip out on him. “I know you’re mad. I’m sorry, but--”
“Don’t ‘but,’ me Choi Seungcheol. Where were you all morning?!” She snapped, turning sideways to avoid direct eye contact with Vernon, who was very grateful that she wasn’t yelling at him, as she was barking curse words at Seungcheol.
While she was on the phone, Vernon slowly put on his boots on and slipped the notepad into the pocket of his bomber jacket that still hung on the wall hook.
“That’s all,” Seungcheol finished, “I just got a little carried away and completely forgot about Vernon,” he abruptly stopped, “Vernon! Shit! Did he get home alright?”
She glanced back at Vernon who flashed a small smile at her from across the living room.
“Well,” she lingered.
“It’s okay, just tell me when I get there. I’m coming up now,” he said cheerfully and dropped the call.”
“Wait--”
Get there? Oh crap. Her best friend had a key to her apartment, of course. What would he want at this hour? Couldn’t he just call me as always? She thought.
The sudden noise of a key turning startled Vernon just as much as it startled her. They exchanged wide-eyed looks and she reluctantly made her way to the door.
Just as she thought he would, Seungcheol froze when he saw Vernon in her apartment. After a moment, he gave her the most accusing wide grin and he pushed past her to stand between her and Vernon, who uneasily sat back on the couch. Seungcheol looked back and forth between them as if fishing for words to say.
She hoped he wouldn’t find them and glared at him with denial in her eyes. No, Cheol this is so not what you think it is, she told him mentally.
“Vernon!” he finally said with a grin and greeted the boy. “Wait, are you two..?” He was gesturing with his hands in a way that made her want to crawl into a hole somewhere and hide.
Vernon scratched the back of his neck in embarrassment and she slapped Seungcheol’s shoulder, “Cheol,” she barked, “really?”
“That’s true you haven’t had a guy over since you broke up wi--”
“CHEOL!” She practically shrieked. Unbeknownst to her, Vernon tilted his head to the side, as if curious.
“Well, it’s about time,” Seungcheol protested.
She threw her hands in the air and muttered, “you try to do a nice thing--I don’t know why I bother.”  Exasperated, she gave Cheol another look and he gasped as if he was remembering that he was not actually there to mortify her, and made his way to her bedroom.
“Jacket! I forgot my jacket here the other time!”
Vernon, surprised, realized just how familiar Seungcheol with her place. He seemed to stroll around like he owned the place. But what he didn’t know was that though they didn’t live together, Seungcheol would often spend weekdays watching movies here and just lazing on her couch.
Vernon couldn’t help but wonder if there was something between them. Unaware of what the sudden feeling in his gut was, his eyes darkened with jealousy.
Seungcheol came out of the bedroom, with his jacket in hand and beckoned to Vernon, “Let’s go then, if you two are done,” he mockingly grinned at her expected angry expression, “we’ve got things to do.”
Vernon snapped out of it and nodded in agreement. He quickly got up and flashed a polite, more reserved smile in her direction. She hesitated at the change, but returned it and gave a slight wave of her hand as both went out the door.
Before she closed the door, Seungcheol leaned in and said in a lower tone, “Do me a favor, come to the club an hour earlier tonight. I’ve got something to show you.”
Not having a single idea what it could be, she hastily agreed to get him out of her apartment and shut the door.
Tonight she wore her black ripped skinny jeans and a striped crop top with long sleeves. It was exactly an hour before opening time and Seungcheol was on stage, fiddling with the mics. For some reason, there were two of them.
She still didn’t understand why until Vernon came in through the doors. Were they practicing something? If so, why did she have to sacrifice another hour of her free time to be here? Making herself comfortable at her usual spot at the bar counter, she gave Cheol half a wave signaling that he had her attention.
He smiled and spoke through the mic, “Thanks for coming, boss.” He tapped both mics with his finger, but instead of staying on stage like she guessed he would, he strolled over to her and stood right behind her.
“You gonna sing from here now?” she joked.
He shushed her, cupping her ears and turning her head to the stage, “Just listen.”
The music started up and Vernon pulled the mic from its stand. His cap was off, letting his brown locks bounce freely as he bopped his head to the beat. He took a breath and started rapping.
Lean on me Lean on me
If I am in your heart If I am really in your heart Wherever you are I will follow you
Even if we’re so busy That we can’t see each other often If we get drunk on each other and fall asleep In the dreams, don’t hesitate Lean on me
We are doing well So have strength Even if you wake up from your dreams If I’m really in your heart Wherever you are I’ll be there
As the words left his lips, hers parted in awe. She couldn’t believe how talented he really was. The fact that he wrote these lyrics himself was impressive, but that was not just it. The way he carried himself on stage was incredible. He was the complete opposite of the shy, polite boy that she met less than a day ago. On stage, he was a confident, charismatic young man.
When he stopped, he pushed his hair back with his fingers and humbly smiled, bowing his head.
Seungcheol started clapping at a ridiculously fast pace, but she could only nod in agreement.
She turned to face Seungcheol, raising an eyebrow in question.
“Hire him,” he said simply.
“What?” she snapped. “You know I can’t do that, for a multitude of reasons.”
“Those being?” he shrugged.
She glared at him, “You know more than well that I do not own the club. And he’s only nineteen! Uncle would kill me.”
“No, uncle will listen to you,” he protested.
As they distractedly whispered to each other, Vernon got off the stage and walked over to them, ceasing the whispers.
The three of them exchanged little smiles. She and Seungcheol looked like concerned parents talking about their only child. Vernon seemed relatively unphased and like he wasn’t really waiting for any kind of opinion or answer. She wondered if Seungcheol told him about his hiring plans.
What confused her most was why Cheol would let anyone rap beside him on his stage. She thought about it all night, and then remembered that he would be going back to Korea next year, which was very soon.
Seungcheol had moved to New York with her that one summer, dropping out of school as well to be there for her. Somehow, he never really left and decided to stay with her for a year. Just one year, he said, for reasons he changed each time, but she knew it was until he was convinced that she was truly okay.
Faster than she liked, her time with the last person on the earth who could actually bring a genuine smile to her lips, was coming to an end. She realized that even though he was leaving, he was still trying to look out for her. A part of her wished she could ask him to stay, but she knew he would, and after all he had done for her, she owed it to him to at least pretend she was okay, which sadly, she wasn’t.
The sun was slowly rising once again as she stood at the club’s entrance, with her knuckles curled up in the pockets of her navy coat.
She didn’t just wait for Vernon this time, but Seungcheol as well. Vernon walked out first. The wind blew his hair all over the place and she could clearly see that he regretted not wearing a cap today.
Seungcheol came right behind him, with much more enthusiasm. He wrapped his arms around both their shoulders and they started crossing the road.
The walk to the bus stop was shorter than expected, with small talk, most of which was from Seungcheol, here and there. He talked about going back to SOPA and how he’d miss rapping on the club’s stage. His tone wasn’t sad in any way. Honestly, it never was. Seungcheol was always the positive type, keeping the atmosphere far from gloomy.
Vernon, though, was a little too quiet, forcing a laugh every once in awhile. Seungcheol didn’t seem to notice and kept chattering on about anything and everything, not leaving her any time to interject and ask Vernon what was on his mind.
Once they finally got to the bus stop, Seungcheol gave her a hug and whispered in her ear, “Hire him.”
She gave him another one of her glares and waved goodbye.
“You okay?” she asked Vernon, who had sat heavily on the same bench she saw him on last night, as soon as Seungcheol was out of sight.
She walked over and sat down next to him. This time, she decided, she would wait for the bus to come.
His face lit up, almost like there wasn’t a hint of worry in his heart, but that wasn’t the case. She could somehow tell, which surprised him.
“I’m good,” he lied with an unconvincing smile.
“Then why were you so quiet all the way? Is it because I didn’t hire you right away?” she asked.
His eyes widened and he shook his head a couple of times, “No! Nonono! That’s not it! I promise.”
“Look,” she started, making sure her tone wasn’t too harsh or overly sweet, “You’re so talented, why would you want to waste your time rapping at a club like that? Why don’t you just get on a plane and go live your dream?” She made a lot of hand gestures while she said those things. It was a mystery to her why he’d waste his time like that.
He silently looked at her and then said, “Well, I'm kind of a few dollars short...” He paused, “Few thousand actually.”
All she could blurt out was, “Oh. I see.” He could make it seem like a joke. Somehow that boy always had a smile on his face, no matter how serious the subject was. He was always so positive about things, it was astounding. But after tonight, she knew there was more to that smile than it seemed and despite herself, she was intrigued.
In a few awkward moments of silence, he finally decided to ask her what was bothering him the entire day.
He blurted,“So, are you and Cheol...?”
She immediately understood what he meant and the entire night flashed before her eyes.
“Oh! No! Nononono,” she laughed. “Cheol and I aren’t like that. We grew up together. I guess we give off that vibe sometimes because we have known each other so long and even work together, but no, we’re not a couple. And we never have been.”
She could see the relief wash over him like a cold bucket of water pouring over his head. At the same time, she wondered if he thought she was afraid he’d “outshine” her “boyfriend” on stage. That was clearly not the case in her head.
“Ah, I see,” he nodded awkwardly, catching a quick glance at her and then glancing away.
It was cute that he thought Seungcheol and her were a thing. It was even cuter than he cared at all.
The bus pulled over just in time. They both got up at the same time and exchanged casual goodbyes.
As he took that one step to get into the bus, she grabbed him by his sleeve. “Hey, you know what? You’re hired,” she heard herself say, with shock. She couldn’t believe she’d just hired him! Her Uncle would kill her! There was something about this boy that was always making her do unexpected things!
He turned around and grabbed her hand with the both of his. He shook it a couple of times, thanking her more times than she could count. That’s what finally made her chuckle and as the bus driver called Vernon in, he finally had to let go.
As soon as the bus took off, she crossed the road and continued making her way to her apartment as usual. To her surprise, she couldn’t seem to control the smile that tickled her face. She rubbed her hands together over and over again. Her cheeks burned crimson.
It wasn’t because of the cold, and this time she turned around.
