Happy 75th anniversary of Scrooge McDuck!

On November 14, 1947, a comic called Christmas on Bear Mountain was released and although it was a Christmas comic, Donald’s uncle named Scrooge McDuck will appear for the first time. At the beginning a big grumpy and bastard man, and at the end a happy man and an adventurer who only loves money. And yes, that comic was invented by Carl Barks, a genius comic artist and writer. Barks is also credited with creating the character Scrooge McDuck. So thanks Barks.

Scrooge was modeled on Ebenezer Scrooge in a Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and was a real antagonist at first and cruel to his nephew Donald. However, he will later change and become a great legend not only for his great wealth, but also for his adventures, which he will later write about the making of the Indiana Jones movies. In addition, although he appeared as a forerunner in Donald’s classic propaganda short “The Spirit of ‘43” as Donald’s Good Spirit, he will have a real role in an educational classic short called “Scrooge McDuck and the Money” (1967), to become 20 years later the main character for the legendary Ducktales series (1987).

Apart from Barks, there were other writers and artists who worked for Donald Duck comics. Especially Don Rosa, who wrote and drew, around his collector’s comic, related to Scrooge’s life “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck”. Of course there are other authors who have worked a lot on Scrooge comics such as William Van Horn, Marco Rota, Romano Scarpa, Giovanni Carpi, Guido Martina, Giovanni Cavazano, Arild Mildthun, Kari Korhonen and others.

Of course, Scrooge McDuck will also appear in other cartoons, comics, video games and other Disney franchises. He becomes the first richest duck in the world, having over a trillion dollars and becoming a hilarious legend and thus together with Donald and Daffy Duck, he becomes one of the most famous and best fictional duck characters ever.

Now there are pictures of the richest duck in the world, together with his friends and enemies and his family from the beginning until today, in its various versions. And sorry that this is going to be a long post and that not everyone will be able to stop at this post.

So Weird and its fandom have come a long way in 20 years because of that outreach and we’re all not so alone anymore.

Goodbye & Broppy

After the song was released, I felt the need of doing something I haven't done in a while for the Trolls fandom: an in-depth analysis.

The lyrics of the song were a real tearjerker; the separation, the longing, the sadness, the impression of giving up as the only option... And, considering it said Justin Timberlake was supposed to sing it, and the mentions of "My queen", "My love"; it totally sounds like a Broppy song.

Now, I know @georgebeard mentioned they'd talked to an animator who confirmed the scene was indeed deleted from the film. However, as a loyal and experienced member of the Miraculous fandom, I know better than to cross out the possibility of being misled in order to avoid spoilers (I'm looking at you guys, Chloé redemption, Félix , and Chat Blanc). So, there's that.

And even if the song did not make it in the end, we must not forget the first movie and its extra content.

If you purchased a DVD copy (like myself), or were obsessed enough to search for every possible Trolls-related video on YouTube (like myself), you must have surely found the deleted scenes from the film.

"Bringing Back Happy."

And that's what I wanna talk about!

Bringing Back Happy was a, rather early (considering its storyboard stage), villain song that Chef was supposed to sing. So, even if Goodbye doesn't make it into Trolls World Tour, the chances of it appearing as extra content are pretty high, considering it was even mentioned before the release of the movie.

If that weren't enough for ya, there's more. Don't worry.

As I mentioned earlier, if you're familiar with the deleted scenes, you'll know 2/3 were in a very advanced stage of animation before being scrapped. Not to mention, the one major change we got no info about: turning Poppy's coronation party to the 20 year anniversary since they escaped the bergens. Again, a scene so advanced in its animation stage that even made it to the trailer!

Moreover, there's this detail in the very first trailer of Trolls World Tour that stuck with me: Branch's quote "This is a terrible idea that will blow up in your face!"

Which, if we compare it to his supportive attitude in the latest trailer ("I'm coming with you"), is completely different and even unexpected.

And that leads me to this: there are many reasons why a scene would be deleted; it gives a character a quality they didn't want, Chef didn't get to sing because it made her too funny, while Poppy didn't wear her dresses because it made her look spoiled; it becomes longer than they expected, another reason for the dresses and, I think, for the storytelling; or it changes the vibe of the movie greatly (if you guys knew the original script for How to train your dragon 2...).

On a side note, I remember a post from long ago that explained that one of the reasons its OP liked trolls so much was because, unlike the vast majority of films, Poppy and Branch never really had a fall out. They were always together.

What do I mean with this?

What if their fall out happens in this movie? What if Branch says that line out of frustration and Poppy and him, both devastated, are forced to go their separate ways?

That would be the perfect cue for a song as romantic and heartbreaking as Goodbye.

Not to mention, it would also explain how on Earth Poppy could be captured by Barb, alone. Because there's no way Branch wouldn't go down with her otherwise, and you know it.

Now that the song analysis and theorizing is out of the way, let's move on to the deeper part of the analysis: Broppy itself.

As someone who's been a hardcore Broppy shipper even before watching the movie, you can believe me when I say that it'll devastate me if they killed Broppy.

Even so, I also consider myself as someone both highly emotional and analytical, hence, why I create such analysis on the things I love. Trolls being no exception.

Something I want to talk about to make you all understand my point of view is the way Dreamworks works (as I see it). And for that, I'd like to compare Trolls, HTTYD, their tv shows, and their main ships, Broppy and Hiccstrid; respectively.

If there's something I've noticed about Dreamworks and Disney, that's that Disney movies have a much greater stand-alone value than Dreamworks'. That's why 95% of its films end with an extra-official couple or why their sequels are either shitty compared to the original (Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Mulan...) or a fucking masterpiece. I mean, take Frozen, for instance. The film made a major point on criticising Disney's "I get together with someone I barely know and we live happily ever after" trope. And yet, even if it was much subtler and less intense than usual, that's exactly what happened with Anna and Kristoff. Maybe they weren't married, but they got officially together. And as for Frozen II... I haven't seen it, but I've been told it's very, very different than the first one, and very, very good.

So, yeah. Stand-alone value.

But Dreamworks... Dreamworks manages to reach beautiful conclusions that, at the same time, let the plot perfectly open for more stories to be told.

Seriously, just watch How to Train your Dragon!

Every film had its ending, but it also made you wonder what was gonna happen next. It made you understand that the saga wasn't over, just a part of it. And I think that's what they're trying to achieve with Trolls.

I mean, sure. The plot of the sequel wasn't what we expected at all and made many of us think about the astounding amount of fanfics that delved in the possible existence of different kinds of trolls... But it left us all with one question in our minds, "what now?" And, at the same time, the film had reached a beautiful conclusion.

See what I mean?

I wholeheartedly believe this is something Dreamworks aim to achieve with its pairings. They don't want them to be rushed, they want to develop them. Sure, they want us to see there are ships, but they strive to form deep, strong relationships with much more meaning behind than just sharing an adventure together.

And that, that is something I can clearly see with Hiccstrid and Broppy.

If we take HTTYD, the hints on the romantic relationship between Hiccup and Astrid were even greater than Poppy and Branch's. Heck, they even kissed. And you know what was their official description for Riders of Berk to half of Race to the Edge? Not-so-platonic best friends.

But that's because they took the time to naturally develop and strengthen their bond!

Which is what I think is supposed to happen to Poppy and Branch.

Sure, they are close. Sure, they were on a life-changing adventure together. Sure, they are countless hints on their romantic feelings.

But they still spent 20 years being practically strangers.

They still need to learn how to be a team together. They still need to learn how the other works. They still need some basic ground.

If we keep on comparing the two films, we must not forget that HTTYD 2, despite having Hiccup and Astrid as betrothed, wasn't as heavy on their romance as the first and third movie were.

Because the focus of the film was Hiccup becoming a leader. Not becoming Astrid's husband.

And, considering the plot of Trolls World Tour, it's still very possible that it won't be as heavy on Broppy as it was the prequel. After all, TWT is more about diversity and harmony than happiness, which is what made the contrast between the optimistic princess and the cynical survivalist so important for Trolls.

But, please, fear not. This does not necessarily mean that Broppy is dead. It just means we might have to be careful about letting our hopes up and, more importantly, in case nothing is conclusive about these two in Trolls World Tour, that we just have to be a little more patient.

After all, a good written ship never disappoints.

It certainly wasn’t the first time Stensland had thought this (or even attempted to put the thought into action soon after), much less the first time he had thought it the moment he had woken up from some batshit crazy trippy dream.

The Ocean Under the Moon (2019!Aladdin/They Call Me Jeeg, 1525 words (and counting)) Fabio had a weird, mostly unknown love for thrift stores.

Love is a Battlefield (The Old Guard, 1328 words) There was an excitement in the air as they all stood in formation. Syrus pawed at the ground, his hoof kicking up grass and dust that hung around his legs.

when push comes to shove (2019!Aladdin/Trust, 1371 words) It had started with Jafar grabbing fistfuls of Primo’s ass and a mocking comment about how thin his pants were, which somehow had led to Jafar assuming Primo wasn’t wearing anything under the blue trousers. He assumed correctly.

play us an encore (2019!Aladdin/2017!Beauty and the Beast, 2400 words) “Open your robe.” Jafar didn’t move from where he was standing in the bathroom doorway. Dressed in only his silk red robe, he stared back at Adam, who was smiling in a way that Jafar couldn’t read.

break the bubble (2019!Aladdin/2017!Beauty and the Beast/2015!Cinderella, 1092 words) “Love is like a bomb, baby, c’mon get it on…” The lights flashed as three gorgeous men walked onto the stage, lip synching with the loud lyrics of Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" playing over the speakers.

Analysis:

First of all, the fact that 11/20 of these are crossovers is pretty telling of what my favorite thing to write is. Most are either Aladdin crossovers or Marvel crossovers (and involve either Jafar or Loki, respectively) so there’s that.

This list goes back about two years, which is interesting because in the past two years I’ve been working on bigger projects most of the time. Notice how most of these fics are under 2k? Most of these started as small fic prompts or 2am spur-of-the-moment ideas and the longer ones are the more self-indulgent fics.

5 of these fics start with a line that’s mostly used to catch a reader’s attention before a tag, which is then followed by a bit of exposition or action. Twice I use song lyrics as a way of grabbing attention because the POV of the character is also having their attention grabbed.

Several times I just jump right into a character’s POV and begin with them thinking about something or essentially telling the reader “what is happening is normal” or “what is happening is not normal” depending on the situation. It’s also sometimes a quick recap or the statement of a fact about our POV character.

Most of the time, I just jump right into the action to get the story moving. I’ve noticed I prefer to do this over giving a description of where we are. If I do give a description, it almost always comes after the opening line. With the exception of Shadows, none of these opening lines are a setting description.

I really do have a thing for crossovers, especially the weird ones LOL I just love the idea of two different worlds connecting in some way and having the characters themselves connect on another level. D*sney’s been crossing over their stuff since well before I was even born, so while it’s not surprising to see a disney crossover fic, I do think there’s something to writing that odd lil ship I’ve written about 7 fics for (dang!)

I tend to deal with themes of forbidden love in various ways and how the characters make those connections despite the fact they shouldn’t be together. Whether it’s as simple as unrequited romance, or they’re enemies, or they’re not necessarily enemies but they really shouldn’t be together... and yet they always find a way. IDK maybe I’m just a romantic at heart who loves seeing love stories about love conquering all. But that being said, the obstacles these characters face aren’t typical ones?? Like, from this list at least, love triangles aren’t something I’m interested in, but if there is a third party (like in Violet Skies) the third party is never really considered to be a “threat” to the main couple.

That’s probably another reason why I dig crossover ships, because they inherently shouldn’t be together. they’re from vastly different worlds with maybe one or two things in common (like genre or setting or a character detail or just a vibe).

Or I’m just here to have fun and I’m dragging these characters into the fun zone whether they like it or not :P

But really, all of these are love stories in some way or another. Not that I’ve never written gen fic and I love reading gen fic! But I guess my fave fics to write are the shippy stuff. I just enjoy exploring these types of relationships, despite whether or not they “should” be together. Heck, a couple of these do not have happy endings nor should they. It’s really interesting seeing exactly how drawn to that stuff I am.

FAVE OPENING LINE This is kind of a weird thing to say, but I really don’t care a lot of my opening lines most of the time. I think they are what they need to be, but they don’t hit me the way they should? Some of these I kinda wish I could go back and change, though that’s mostly cuz out of all the lines in each of these fics the first lines I’ve read and reread the most. So it’s mostly me being my own worst critic, but I think my best writing comes more in the middle and ends of my fics, not the beginnings.

That said, I gotta go with Violet Skies: Another day, another suitor. This one was from the far west with flowered silks and bright pastels. Prince Adam from France.

This is one of those opening lines I’d never change. The fic starts off from Jafar’s POV and he is bored of these princes coming and going and starting this big fic off with him being like “here we go again” with this basic description of Adam is exactly where the fic needed to start, so by the time the reader gets to the end of the first chapter, we know this is definitely not “here we go again” with Prince Adam~

Reflecting on 2020

The strangest thing about 2020 was how familiar much of it felt: Working from home, extended periods of isolation, weeks and months blending together. To a much lesser degree, those are things I experience each year as a freelancer. And while I suspect it will take awhile before the full extent of the trauma we’ve all lived through this year fully sets in, right now I’m mostly focused on gratitude. I’m grateful for the health of my loved ones. Grateful I already had a work-from-home routine to maintain during the pandemic. And grateful that I was able to quarantine with my family for much of the year—which had its challenges but also its rewards too.

In my 2019 year-end post I wrote about feeling like my career was finally on an upward trajectory after several years of plateauing. This year obviously offered some new wrinkles in that regard. I made significantly less money and felt familiar fears about how sustainable this career actually is. But having less work also gave me more time to focus on the actual craft of writing. I feel like I reached a new level in terms of voice, clarity, and the ability to self-edit. I'm the sort of person who constantly (arguably, obsessively) strives to be better, and it’s rewarding to feel like that hard work is finally slowly starting to pay off.

In addition to devoting my quarantine time to mastering a favorite curry recipe, getting really into the Enneagram, finally learning to French braid hair, and rewatching all of New Girl, I also had some really cool opportunities scattered throughout the year. I interviewed John Barrowman about his surprise return to Doctor Who, which felt like a real milestone for me. I also contributed to the Los Angeles Times’ list of TV shows to binge-watch during quarantine, which appeared both online and in print. And thanks to everything going virtual this year, I was able to attend a press panel for the fifth season of This Is Us, which is the sort of thing I’m not usually able to do as a Chicago-based critic.

My career is always a juggling act between film and TV, and this year made me appreciate how valuable it is to be able to move seamlessly between both worlds. I took on new TV assignments covering the first season of Stargirl and the second season of The Umbrella Academy, both of which were a blast to write about. And while I didn’t watch quite as many films as I did in my insane catch-up year last year, I did fill in some more major blindspots. I also contributed to The A.V. Club’s list of the best films of 2000 and shared my own ballot over on Letterboxd. Oh, and I set up a Letterboxd this year too!

Elsewhere, I made my debut on Bustle and The Takeout, and ended the year with a Polygon article about “Kind Movies” that pretty much sums up my entire ethos on storytelling. I was also named a Top Critic by Rotten Tomatoes, which was a real honor. But the pride and joy of my career remains my rom-com column, When Romance Met Comedy. I devoted a whopping 49,000 words to analyzing 25 different romantic comedies this year. And I’m really pleased with how the column has grown and with the positive feedback I’ve received.

I have to admit, I sometimes worry that year-end highlight reels like this one can make my life seem easy or glamorous in a way that doesn’t reflect what it’s like to actually live through it. I'm tremendously lucky to get to do what I do, but I also struggle a lot��both with the logistics of this career and with bigger questions about what value it brings to the world. My goal is to approach 2021 with a greater sense of intentionality. I want to be more thoughtful in my career choices, more purposeful in how I use social media, and more active in my activism and politics. I’d also like to do 20 push-ups a day everyday for the whole year, but we’ll see how long that resolution actually lasts.

Finally, on a sadder note, one other defining experience of the year was the loss of my dear internet friend Seb Patrick, who I’ve known for years through the Cinematic Universe podcast. Seb created a wonderfully positive nerd space online, and was a big part of my early quarantine experience thanks to the Avengers watchalongs I did with the CU gang in the spring. I’m so grateful for all the fun pop culture chats we got to have throughout the years, several of which are linked below. Seb is tremendously missed, and there’s a fund for his family here.

bro, Tolbert (Patty Tolan/Erin Gilbert from Ghostbusters 2016 for those not in the know) ARE A VERY UNDERRATED SHIP.

Understandably so. The Yatesbert and Toltzmann was STRONG in the movie and my canon-wired brain definitely has trouble ignoring it. (and as co-founder of this ship, my Tolbert tag is only a SHAMEFUL 3 pages long - so like I Get It.)

And yes there's polybusters to get both the canon ships AND the fanon ships in one -- but Holtzmann has Many feelings and Zero skills to communicate them, Abby's instinct is to lock her own feelings up so tightly she sometimes avoids asking other people about their own, Patty has only been monogamous, partly because that's what she prefers and partly because she's only seen poly ships crash and burn, and Erin has WAY too many unaddressed issues with being excluded thanks to her childhood. She will get jealous af and she will be hurt over every perceived slight. Like..??? I don't know how to get them past that, sorry.

BUT IGNORING THAT and jumping straight to our fanon AUs - Patty and Erin are really fucking adorable and perfect and upset me greatly with how cute and perfect they are.

To start any new/newly curious fans off with a primer:

Patty Tolan is a certified Disney Prince. (LINK - I still stand by this opinion I posted in 2016)

She can DANCE!!! as Rory Gilmore stated in S1 of Gilmore Girls, Disney princes who can dance are the best. Now, Rory may not know anything about life, but she is an expert in all works of fiction, so we can be assured this is nothing but Genuine Truth.

Patty is swoon-worthy tall. Like the kind of tall people weak for height differences dream of. Add this together with the dancing skills and what do you get? DIPPING! Now, it's 100% true that when you're actually dipped while dancing in real life, it is super weird and awkward and for a full 60 seconds you think you're going to die (even if the dip only lasted 2 sec) - but that doesn't stop us all from wanting to be dipped in the first place! So this is still a massive positive.

also after you’re pulled back up from a dip, you get to use the momentum to tuck yourself closer to your partner’s chest. See this headcanon and below section on Cuddles for why this is Very Important

Patty will 100% have your back at all times even when she completely disagrees with what you're doing. You want to release a ghost in the lab? That's such a bad idea. I'll get my proton pack.

TANGENT: Erin will also 100% have your back (those 20 years she spent away from Abby are trauma induced and should not be counted against her loyalty record) but she does it in a completely different way. Patty offers strong defense. She'll block the bullshit from getting inside when you need a shield, and when you're out fighting, she'll be right there by your side watching your blind side. Erin takes the offensive route. She's very "WTF did you say about my wife?!" and then come for your throat kind of protective. I stan both of these types of protective.

Erin totally dreams of meeting her own Disney Prince (again reference that first link). She is the most disgustingly alloromantic person you've ever met and wants to be spoiled with love. BUT DID YOU KNOW THIS GOES BOTH WAYS? When Erin is in a relationship, she will spoil the shit out of her partner. She will do any little or large thing she can think of that makes the other person happy. Morning coffee? Erin has Patty's order ready without being asked. Flowers at the office for their anniversary? Done. Because Erin has always always always wanted flowers delivered to her office, but it turns out being the flower giver makes her just as ecstatically happy. Erin gives Patty a book on a topic Patty talked about for two hours last week - not for a special occasion, just because Patty was super passionate about it. (She hands it over nervously because while she triple checked both the lab and home libraries for it and came up empty, there's still only a 50% chance that Patty hasn't read it already.) (Patty has NOT read it already and she's so thrilled she starts reading it immediately.) (*immediately meaning after kisses and hugs of gratitude.) LINK - these tags do not lie

Yes, admittedly, Erin's need for approval and affection is also a lingering response from her childhood trauma, but it only crosses into unhealthy territory when her acts of affection go unreciprocated. Her acts of affection with Patty definitely do not go unreciprocated.

Disney Afternoon characters on the poster as a video game commercial at the end of the movie Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers movie (cameo roles). Also at the end of the movie Darkwing Duck appeared to say that people want Darkwing and I agree with him. It's time for the Darkwing Duck reboot! Let's get dangerous!

Although the end of the year is approaching, here are the results of this year's review. Yes, I was absent in certain periods because of my problems and that there were problems, but all in all it was a good year. I hope that next year will be even better and yes, I will also start franchising as soon as I have more free time. But yes, I will open some new pages as well.

Jonathan Groff is not, he says, “a serial killer sort of person”, which will probably come as a relief to the millions of adoring families who know him best in wholesome animated form, as the voice of mountain-dwelling ice harvester Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen.

What drew the 34-year-old actor – nominated for a Tony for his Broadway performance as Melchior Gabor in Spring Awakening and his scene-stealing turn as King George III in Hamilton – to the dark, murder-heavy Netflix drama Mindhunter was, he says, precisely what a radical departure it was from his previous roles.

His FBI profiler Holden Ford is, as he puts it: “This corn-fed, all-American, earnest Midwestern guy, having an existential crisis, finding meaning and purpose while talking to incarcerated sociopathic murderers.” Groff tells me all this, it should be noted, with an enormous grin. Apparently, the only major note that David Fincher, Mindhunter’s director, ever has for his leading man is to stop smiling so much. “[Fincher] would be like, ‘We’re rolling, and, Jonathan, stop smiling. And you’re still smiling, you’re still smiling, and… action.’”

Television, of course, hardly needs another FBI drama, but what elevates Mindhunter above the procedural is not only Fincher’s precision direction, but also the tension inherent in Ford’s mission. Set in the late Seventies and based on the career of real-life FBI profiler and “serial killer whisperer” John Douglas, “Holden is pushing for understanding and curiosity, rather than simply dismissing these killers as crazy,” says Groff. Using the emerging social sciences of criminology and psychology, he hopes to gain some understanding of what motivates these apparent monsters.

The first series saw Ford interviewing notorious murderers Richard Speck, Ed Kemper and Jerry Brudos; season two, which begins this week, will delve into the Atlanta Child Murders (in which an estimated 28 children were killed between 1979 and 1981), and see the protagonist land an interview with “the rock star of the serial killer world”, Charles Manson.

There is also the added layer of Ford’s personal development; over the first season, he grew from a buttoned-up boy scout (literally drinking milk from the bottle in an early episode) into a skilful manipulator of his subjects; some critics have gone further and accused him of sociopathy.

“I never saw Holden as a sociopathic character, but he definitely wants to win,” says Groff. I agree about the sociopathy but, I suggest, Holden is perhaps guilty of wielding empathy as a weapon. “Yeah, I love that – weaponising empathy!” Groff cries, excitedly. “That might be the title of my autobiography.”

It’s early on a Friday morning in Los Angeles and, in spite of the unusually anti-social call time, Groff, boyishly handsome and sipping on a Diet Coke, is infectiously bouncy and Tiggerish. During the filming of Mindhunter, he has, he tells me, been listening to the audiobook of Fosse, Sam Wasson’s bestselling biography of the legendary Broadway choreographer and film director, on which the current show Fosse/Verdon was initially based. After finishing the book, he went back and watched all of Fosse’s films.

“He does such a good job of capturing that drug of being on stage, and the sadness that you get when you come off stage,” he says. “The huge rush of performing and the let-down afterwards. I get both happy and depressed about it. I don’t want to love it this much, but then I do, but I want also to have perspective.” He waves his hands in the air as if to bat away his only apparent torture: loving this job, which he is incredibly good at, a little too much.

Groff grew up in Pennsylvania, in a conservative, Methodist family, but his parents encouraged his theatrical ambitions, driving him several hours each way to audition for musicals in New York City. He won a place in a touring performance of The Sound of Music and deferred his spot at Carnegie Mellon University. At 20, he was cast in Spring Awakening, earning his first Tony nomination at 21, in 2007.

Television roles followed in Glee, The Normal Heart and Looking, the critically acclaimed but short-lived HBO drama about the lives of gay men in San Francisco. His parents, he tells me, “didn’t watch that one”.

Openly gay himself, in Mindhunter Groff is playing straight, in a role that features a solid amount of sex scenes as well as psychosexual content. Ryan Murphy, his former showrunner at Glee, and the creator of Pose and The People vs OJ Simpson, was so moved to see this, Groff tells me, that he rang to congratulate him.

“He got really emotional about it, partly, I think, because when he first met me [Groff made a pilot with him during Spring Awakening, which was never picked up] I was still in the closet. Then I came out, owned my identity and, thankfully, still get to play all different kinds of parts. Ryan said: ‘I know that it was something you were scared about, but you worked through your fear, and now here you are, getting to do this amazing show, and not being defined by your sexual orientation.’”

Did he really worry that if he came out he’d never be given a “straight” role again? “Totally,” Groff cries, slapping his thighs. “No agents or producers had ever said: ‘Don’t come out of the closet, it will ruin your career,’ but it was an unspoken thing. And there were no out gay movie stars as examples. But then I fell in love, at 23. And I thought, ‘OK, if I come out, and I only do off-Broadway plays for the rest of my life, I am totally happy with that – that’s what I moved to New York for. So maybe I won’t be a romantic lead in a movie – who cares? I would rather be doing cool stuff with people who don’t give a f--- than pretend to be someone I am not.’”

Happily, that couldn’t be further from the case. While filming the second season of Mindhunter in Pittsburgh, he’s been simultaneously reprising his role as Kristoff for Frozen 2, due out in November. “It was the dream,” he beams. “To be able to sit with Charles Manson, and then drive to New York to pretend to be in a blizzard, singing a Disney song.”

But, in truth, he’s never really stopped being Kristoff. “I make Voice Memos for kids,” he reveals. “I sing for them and do the reindeer voice, which they get really excited about. I do a lot of King George Voice Memos too, actually.”

He was in Hamilton for only two months, in the spring of 2015, but made enough of an impact with his campy, knowing performance, to earn another Tony nomination.

“It was like being in the eye of the storm,” he says of his spell in the Broadway phenomenon. “I listened to the Bill Gates Desert Island Discs the other day; he has My Shot from Hamilton as his final song. And I thought, ‘Oh my god, that’s right, I met Bill Gates – he came to the show.’ You really can’t take it in, in the moment, but looking back, I’m like, ‘Wow, I really met Beyoncé?’”

Given his experience in voicing Frozen, one might assume Groff would be a dab hand at recording audiobooks. Not so, he says. When he was asked to record the audio for John Douglas’s latest non-fiction book (his 13th), The Killer Across the Table, “it was SO hard,” he says. “So much harder than I thought it was going to be. I never made it through one page without f------ up.” It did mean, however, that he finally got to meet the legendary FBI agent in person. “We’d emailed before, but getting to meet him was a great moment. He loves the show, and even talks about it in the book that I recorded.”

This second series is launching at a moment of renewed obsession with Manson, thanks to the 50th anniversary of the murder of Sharon Tate, and the release of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I wonder out loud whether the period that Mindhunter explores, when serial killers began to be studied seriously, was also the moment that they also began to be glamorised in popular culture.

“Yes, David and the writers try to address that question. You have Holden, who is a sycophant and obsessed with Manson, and you have the Bill Tench character [Ford’s FBI colleague, played by Holt McCallany], who is like: ‘Dude, these people are disgusting and deplorable.’

“David is uninterested in creating conversation in which any one person is right and any one person is wrong,” says Groff. “He likes to hold a bunch of different perspectives at the same time. That’s what makes it worth working on, that’s what makes it worth watching.”

TRON LEGACY [9th Anniversary] by FotusKnight

“This artwork is dedicated to the 9th Anniversary of TRON: Legacy, my favorite movie of all time. 9 years ago this movie was firing on all cylinders throughout the world and making more fans all across the globe. This movie is very special to me. When I first watched in back in December 23rd 2010 I was about 11 years old. This movie blew me away. It was really Star Wars for my generation. I can pretty much guarantee that I would feel this level of emotions if I watched A New Hope back in 1977 in theaters. I bought a huge popcorn and a bottle of cola. Half through the movie, it was empty. lol. I still remember the awesomeoness happening on the screen for the first time like it was yesterday. I wish I could erase my memory and re-watch this again. God I despise Disney for not making a sequel 9 years later while milking the absolute fuck out of Star Wars and doing a terrible job at that too. On the other hand, I like telling myself this is for the best. At least they will not infest TRON too. Let the franchise lay to rest. And in 20 years from now, when I will be 40 years old, I'm gonna watch TRON 3 and it's gonna be excellent. Well, fingers crossed. And Happy New Year people.“

I have a cat, with which I have a love-hate relationship... I guess that makes me a cat person ?

Hum, the only celebrities I like are the ones who have a talent that I think is very valuable and whom I admire for it ? Like musicians for example ! So Normal Celebrities !

3. If u could choose to live anywhere, where would that be ?

I guess I would be happy to travel in any English speaking country, but to live I'd go either for an anglophone town (Seattle or Liverpool or maybe Cardiff), either for a place near Archachon Bay, in France, where I grew up... I miss France sunsets ! ❤

4. Disney or DreamWorks?

Disney (favourites are : The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Brother Bear, Pocahontas, Mulan, The Lion King, Lilo and Stitch), even if DreamWorks made one of my favourite childhood movie, which is : Spirit!

'Les Cités d'Or', a French TV show that my mom watched when she was little, about a little boy going to South America to find the Aztec Cities of Gold!

rory pearson was born and raised in fairhope, alabama. his parents were teenagers when they had him and lived with his grandma scarlett. his mom jean marie was ousted by her parents when she told them she was pregnant and his dad’s mom took her in with open arms.

of course his grandma wasn’t going to let them live in the same room in her house without being married, especially with her grandbaby on the way. so after talking with them, and his parents agreeing, they went to the courthouse and got married three months before rory came into the world.

rory was born on april 20th, 1996 and he was without a name for six days. his parents couldn’t decide so they named him rory wyatt vincent pearson. he was always told that since his parents couldn’t decide on naming him after jean marie’s grandfather or greyson’s father, they picked a third name and gave him both of their names for middle names.

when rory was two and a half years old ( not really half, it was june ?? ) his parents graduated high school and went out for a party. unfortunately their designated driver wasn’t so sober and the group of four recent graduates crashed into another car.

his father was in the passenger’s seat and died on impact, his mother was pronounced dead in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

scarlett legally adopted rory after that and raised him. she always told him stories of his parents, but avoided telling him anything about what happened to them for as long as she could.

he was ten years old when he saw the memorial and recognized his parents from their yearbook photos and came home asking about it.

honestly this is jumping ahead a bit but rory didn’t learn to drive until he was twenty years old. and even now, esp now, since he lives in nyc he doesn’t drive often.

okay when he was seventeen years old he met bethany in an airport. he was on his way to a college interview on a connecting flight that got cancelled due to weather conditions. they were both sitting in the same terminal so they got to talking and !!! hit it off

anyway flash forward to he’s in college and he’s moved away to be closer to bethany. which should not have affected his life but when he was looking at colleges fr fr after acceptances the boy chose one closer to his girl

and at the airport he was like all jittery and nervous bc in his pocket he had an engagement ring but he did his bEST to hide it all from beth bc surprises

not that he planned the whole thing ( he did ) but it just so happened they were in the same restaurant waiting for their flight as their first date way back when

and in the middle of dessert, the waiters singing happy birthday this boy attempts to be sly and gets down on one knee. but didnt realize there would be someone coming up behind him to keep up the singing and he ..... kinda caused a mini avalanche of people

and he apologized and is like still on one knee and now he’s looking at bethany with a BRIGHT RED face and he had had this whole speech worked out in his mind ok but all that comes out is, “i love you, please marry me?” in like an awkward stutter because he just TOOK OUT AN ENTIRE WAITSTAFF

somehow bethany said yes ??? and they’re engaged ???

oh and someone got the whole thing on camera and like that happened

the video skyrocketed to the most viewed video entitled “i witnessed an awkward proposal???? and she still said yes?????”

okay so fast forward and rory’s graduated college with a degree in history education bc he wants to be a teacher and he’s got to fly back to alabama and miss his graduation because he got a phone call and grandma scarlett had a stroke

so the boy is freaking out but it’s fine !!! grandma goes home and he winds up staying down and now he’s trying to figure out how to be with beth, find a job in ny, but also take care of his grandma

for a while he toys with the idea of moving grandma up to new york and helping her find a place. so he goes back to new york to talk to beth about it and he’s freaking out and he gets home and she tells him she’s pregnant

of course he never expected to be like 20 and having a baby but ??? whatever. now he’s freaking out because his grandma is not doing good and he’s worried about her and now he’s got to figure out what to do with a BABY ???

and bethany then tells him she wants to get an abortion and rory’s already stressed and so he flips bc of emotions and they get into a huge fight and it just winds up with him leaving and heading back to alabama and bethany in their apartment

so rory goes home to alabama and he keeps getting notifications on social media about bethany so he just shuts his phone off and i’m talking like he goes days without touching his cell phone. he takes a hiatus from youtube because he’s freaking out and

two months after he’s home he seemed like scarlett was doing better so he took her to a party in town to see some of her friends and at the party scarlett had another stroke.

she died six days later, never waking up from the medically induced coma they put her in.

flash forward a couple more weeks after he’s working with lawyers for his grandma’s estate and rest assured scarlett pearson had nothing but her house, her garden, and her beat up corvette that her deceased husband wyatt bought her for their anniversary one year

so its a shocker to find out that scarlett pearson was worth 43.7 billion dollars

and now that money all goes to rory because he’s her only living heir ???

so rory gets this BOATLOAD of money and the local newspaper picks it up which brings it to the national news and somehow it made international news

so he kept his grandma’s house in alabama because ..... he can’t seem to let that go and why should he ?? its a good house and holds a lot of memories

1: A movie you enjoyed as a kid that you don't now

-Probs some comedy I'd find awfully sexist/racist/homophobic etc. now. But of course, I can't recall a specific one, probs because the experience is so deeply squicky and traumatic. Oh, wait, I know. I adored The Great Mouse Detective as a kid, but have heard so many "bleh" comments about it later that I don't want to ruin it by rewatching it as an adult. Why take a happy, cherished, pure and joyous memory away, especially as there are so few of those in my life anyway in proportion to the bad memories?

2: A movie you disliked as a kid that you like/love now

-Not a movie, but I was literally too fucking terrified to watch Doctor Who as a kid on cable, because the Tom Baker repeats they were showing terrified me with the title sequence alone. That empty stare and howling, diddly-duming music were enough to give me nightmares. So I only got into Who in my late teens!

3: Your favorite movie as a kid

-Define "kid." I went through several. I loved the Disney Robin Hood, of course, and at puberty, Wayne's World (yes) and The Princess Bride were my own cult movies, before I had anyone to fangirl them with. Ah, the pre-Internet era.

4: An actor/actress it took you time to warm up to

I remember being weirdly terrified and disturbed by Jeremy Brett as a kid, but then I felt the same about Bowie, and... well. Clearly it was my baby self not knowing WTF to do with all this stirring, restless energy that later turned out to be my skinnyandrogynousbisexualguy orientation thingy. And while I'd first seen Caligari and Casablanca as a teen in the early 90s, I wasn't ready for Connie until he pounced me in 2012. I would not have "got" him the same way and as hard until I was a grown-up, with a wide variety of experiences from many areas of life and a boatload of books/learning behind me. Just... no way.

5: A director it took you time to warm up to

-If anything, I've cooled off various directors I was impressed by when younger. So much of the auteur stuff gets wanky and self-imposing, in this Arrogant Artist Guy "look at my GENIUS big VISION and also insecurity about my penis size" kind of way. I like directors who can be warm and have fun and who show some real humanity (not wanky anvilly/kitchen sink-y sort of "humanity" either). Maybe Branagh? I found him a bit annoying as a kid, but now fap all over his stuff because now I'm old enough to Get It. He is the best kind of fanboy director; his geekiness is catching. Listening to his Thor commentary was a real eye-opener into my realising just how massive a nerd he is, and in a good, "one of us" kind of way.

6: Top five favorite soundtracks of your favorite movie composer

-There isn't just one! But Clint Mansell and Debbie Wiseman turn to gold everything they touch. Debbie especially is hugely unknown still, but she has this most amazing, swellingly Romantic music full of sweeping emotion that I just can't rec her enough. Do check her out; she'll give you goosebumps.

7: Three movies that defined your teen/childhood years

-I think I mentioned those already! But as a teenager, Bram Stoker's Dracula, La Reine Margot and Heavenly Creatures were formative. There were others I obsessed about way more than those, but they weren't as influential--it's more like they were massaging buttons I already had.

8: Sci-fi or westerns?

-Blake's 7! AKA "The Dirty Dozen in Space."

9: Are there any movies you own more than one copy of?

-Ahhahaha. AAAHHAHAHAHA! Of The Thief of Bagdad, I own: The Criterion clusterfuck with the awful clumsy cover someone had their 5-year-old draw, the Nordic DVD, the German Blu-Ray because I live on the edge (what with those Veidt Eye Closeups in HD being a hazard to any uterus) and at least three different digital copies. Because I'm me. I also own two digital copies and one DVD of Casablanca, three digital and one DVD of A Woman's Face and don't get me started on the British telefantasy I have on both DVD and VHS. I have spare copies of both the Caligari Masters of Cinema release and the ITV DVD of The Spy In Black, so I guess I should throw them at somebody.

10: Physical media or streaming?

-Neither. Video files firmly saved onto and run from my hard drive. Fuck streaming with its choppiness (ruins the viewing experience for me) and physical media are usually beyond my budget (unless I save up for a Connie DVD). Besides, I rip my favourite movie discs onto my HD anyway. I want to be able to gif that shit, dammit!

11: Are there any movies you watch on special occasions every year (Christmas, Halloween, birthdays, your mother's aunt's wedding anniversary, etc.)

-Used to do Nightmare Before Christmas on Halloween, but not any more. I still attempt ToB every Christmas. And I used to do All Through The Night with wine on my birthday, but as I can't tolerate alcohol anymore, the experience of Watching ATTN Drunk is no more. Someone start a Halloween tradition with me where we watch either The Student of Prague or Eerie Tales (or both) every year?

12: What movie do you most associate with your best friend(s)?

-Gosh, so few have stayed, so it's more like "movie that reminds you of a broken friendship," yay...?! I've learned to try and not associate movies with people that way any more, because it's more painful than it's worth. Connie is my best friend. He's like Krishna that way.

13: Name a movie adaptation you thought was better than or equal to its source material.

-LOTR put in more facial features and characterisation than Tolkien ever did, and did the tales far less fucking tediously. Imagine if you'd had to sit and watch hobbits walking through the countryside for 6 hours with barely anything happening?! Yeah...

14: What genres do your favorite movies tend to be?

-Historical, fantasy, Gothic Romantic, just Romantic stuff on the whole. More old than new movies these days. Why watch shitty modern chick flicks when I have far better characterisation and far less narrowly defined female lives in old-timey "women's pictures?" And guys who actually fucking shaved, dressed in clothes that were tailored for them instead of rented and saggy, whose bodily expressions weren't frozen for fear of "fagginess," and who weren't pumped full of 'roids.

15: Are you a fan of period dramas and if so, what era do you enjoy best?

-Yes. I love me some costume dramas, but I am seriously picky about them--most post-90s ones have been fucking awful and tend to feature shitty costumes and unkempt hair that would've sent real historical people to Bedlam, wobblycam from hell, vomit-inducingly excessive modernisation to be "edgy", and that one painfully skeletal bint they shove into every period drama ever these days, so it's... slim pickings for a history nerd, these days. There aren't many good ones set in the 17th century/Baroque era, which I love the most: the two Baroque dramas I wholeheartedly love are both series. (The Devil's Whore and By The Sword Divided.) The Angeliques and Musketeer adaptations are riddled with flaws, but there are some glowing bits within. As for The Golden Age of Islam... bloody hell, there really aren't that many good ones out there, are there?! ToB and Jodhaa Akbar and Disney's Aladdin, obviously. La Reine Margot isn't "my" period but it's great, as is Dangerous Liaisons (also not my period)--those are so fucking perfect. And the Connie period dramas, well... I think of them as primarily "silent movies" or "old movies," actually. Of those, The Student of Prague, ToB and The Wandering Jew are the best "costume" ones, IMHO. (I'd probs enjoy Lucrezia Borgia and Carlos and Elisabeth way more, were the copies we have not so smudgy.)

16: Name a movie you love that you would recommend to just about everyone.

-Ah, but we know there are always cynical cunts out there who'd give even Casablanca two stars, so what's the point? I'd still recommend it, though. And The Lion King, I guess.

17: Name a movie you love that you consider an acquired taste.

-Honestly, I'm thinking of telly rather than movies again. You will pry my cherished copy of The Time Monster from my cold, dead hands. Does The Devil of Winterborne count as a movie or TV? That's how far back my love for Mark Gatiss goes. Um... Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood makes me fucking cry with laughter (the comedic timing is what does it. *beat* "Ain't dat some shit!"). Of Connie's oeuvre, yes, I know Bella Donna is rubbish, but Connie and Mary are SIZZLING and horny and juicy and it's Valid as a BDSM porn movie. And the novel is actually good.

18: Name a film you like directed by/starring a filmmaker/actor you normally don't care for.

-Not so much actor/director, but I did *not* expect to love Thor as much as I did, because I expected a dumb popcorn movie but got great adventure cinema with a touch of Shakespeare instead. I really am not the right audience for regular Marvel features at all, before or after. Fuck Marvel up its dumb macho Republican ass. But Thor is fucking beautiful and operatic and poetic and majestic and Pagan and shit. Branagh knows what I like.

19: Name a movie that blew your mind.

-A Woman's Face (1941). Because. Holy. Fuck. How can I keep on finding yet more details in it six years after first watching it, having watched it countless times by now?! And obvs all the other stuff, like the shockingly good female POV, amazing and complex woman protagonist, amazing writing, amazing ensemble cast, amazing direction, amazing lighting, amazing evil Torsten Slinkypussy Barring and The. Goddamn. Attic. Scene.

20: What genre mash-up would you most love to see that either hasn't been done yet or hasn't been done enough?

-Feminist-savvy historical romance with fantasy elements and hot explicit sex that's not shit. Basically, like the stuff you see in my fics, but better paced and woven into coherent adventure movies.

21: The coolest movie you've ever seen

-Too, too many. But Bogie was the coolest. And Claude Rains had the best acting skills. And Conrad Veidt was Conrad motherfucking Veidt. So what with those three mountains of coolness all converging under the Moroccan sky, I'm sure it's safe to say "Casablanca."

The Fox Sci-Fi Universe - Julian Darius

Fox owns several venerable sci-fi franchises, most of which have struggled to one extent or another. Fox’s attempt to combine Predator and Aliens produced a couple lackluster movies, which were then contradicted by Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels. In sum, these properties are mostly languishing (to one degree or another), while Fox had problems managing continuity within franchises, let alone in its one attempt to combine two franchises.

The “Fox Sci-Fi Universe”, listed below, is an attempt to combine these Fox franchises anew, along with other Fox material. Fox has an extensive catalogue of classic films and series which would fit well, many of which haven’t gotten the attention they deserve. I think ,erging them into a single continuity would reinvigorate each film or property, making it part of a tapestry that encourages fans to draw connections and to explore material they otherwise might not.

In addition, Disney’s acquisition of Fox would permit Disney to merge some of its own sci-fi films, including franchises that have struggled on their own. Tron might not be successful on its own, but it could now be an interesting segment of a larger universe, with its world and technology available to characters from other stories.

Key to this strategy is to merge as much compatible material as possible, with special attention to quality material and material produced from the 1980s onward (which looks modern enough). Some quality movies are incompatible, for one reason or another. We can reject any movie we want, and the below list is subject to change. But in general, we don’t want to be purists, only incorporating the very best. We want to incorporate the best works, but we also want to be as all-encompassing as possible, so as to produce a grand tapestry spanning centuries of history.

An impressive body of work containing multiple beloved series and characters, the Fox Sci-Fi Universe contains material directed by Steven Spielberg, Joss Whedon, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Cronenberg, Guillermo del Toro, and David Fincher.

One key franchise here might not be obvious: The X-Files, which retains a certain cache and which is perfect for such an expansive sci-fi universe because of its expansive scope. If you think about it, there’s no reason why Mulder and Scully couldn’t have investigated the VR world of Tron, the teleportation technology of The Fly, or reports of the murderous alien from Predator.

Chronologically prior to The X-Files, the Indiana Jones franchise fits well. Like The X-Files, it’s episodic and less concerned with a single, coherent version of the supernatural or of extraterrestrials than creating an exciting, all-encompassing world in which fantastic stories can be set.

Moving chronologically into the future, the dominant franchise is Aliens, which has the benefit of rarely depicting Earth, permitting us more freedom in terms of a consistent depiction humanity’s future. Beyond Aliens lies Firefly, which is also largely vague about Earth.

Moving forward, material set in the Fox Sci-Fi Universe can incorporate characters and ideas from other properties. Companies should be connected to one another; for example, Bartok Science Industries (from The Fly) could be purchased by Weyland Corporation (from Aliens), and we could learn that the Bartok teleportation technology was an important predecessors to Weyland’s own technology. Similarly, various government agents can be retroactively seen as predecessors or successors to the X-Files program.

The following is a timeline of the Fox Si-Fi Universe. As previously stated, it’s subject to change; movies can be added or removed relatively freely, at least until new installments explicitly place them in continuity. To help set them apart, TV series appear in red.

Era 1: Indiana Jones (1908-1962)

This era essentially contains all material set in the past, relative to its actual date of production.

Stuff that Doesn’t Fit

The two Alien Vs. Predator movies (2004 and 2007) aren’t very good and are incompatible with the Alien prequel movies.

Predator 2 (1990) has been excluded for a few reasons. First, it is set in 1997 and guesses at future technology in a way that’s incompatible with the real world. Second, it features a Predator in Los Angeles and doesn’t limit those who are aware of its alien origins. Third, it briefly features an Alien skull on board a Predator ship, which is incompatible with the origin of the Alien species in the Alien prequel movies. Finally, Predator 2 isn’t great and is widely regarded as a weak film.

Material depicting public encounters with extraterrestrials in the (then) present must be excluded as incompatible with the rest of our material. This excludes material such as The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) and Independence Day (1996). Although a closer call, Flight of the Navigator (1986) has been excluded for the same reason.

Other material is excluded because it presents a future that is incompatible with that of Alien. For example, Planet of the Apes could not be included for this reason (even if that franchise did not include copious incompatible material set in the present day). Post-apocalyptic material such as Zardoz (1974) must similarly be excluded (even if we were inclined to ignore that film’s tonal inconsistencies).

Other material is excluded because it’s incompatible with the rest of the material’s depiction of Earth’s state of technology. This is a subjective criterion, because The X-Files has plenty of technology and knowledge that isn’t referenced later, and this can be used to justify the inclusion of material such as Tron (1982) or The Fly (1986). However, it would be hard to reconcile the miniaturization technology in Fantastic Voyage (1966) with the rest of our timeline. Similarly, Tomorrowland (2015) features advanced androids that are incompatible with later development of androids as depicted in the Alien prequels.

Other material is excluded due to incompatible tone, another admittedly subjective criterion. It’s one thing to include The X-Files in the same universe as Alien, but it’s another to include Buckaroo Banzai (1984) or Idiocracy (2006). While Indiana Jones and The X-Files contain supernatural elements, the tone of Buffy the Vampire Slayer makes it incompatible, in my view. Similarly, the Kingsman franchise feels incompatible with the tone of The X-Files. The exclusion of some older films, such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) or the original The Fly (1958), may also be attributed to their tone.

Some material isn’t included but might be. For example, I’m not sure if James Cameron’s company doesn’t co-own Avatar (2009), and its sequels (in production) might contradict our timeline. Were Avatar to be cleared for inclusion, it would be set between Alien and Aliens. Similarly, because The Martian (2015) is an adaptation of a novel, it’s not clear that Fox retains all rights in perpetuity.

LUCKY PARTNERS

September 25, 1944

“Lucky Partners” was a presentation of Lux Radio Theatre, broadcast on CBS Radio on September 25, 1944.

It is based on a 1940 RKO film of the same name directed by Lewis Milestone which in turn was based on the 1935 French film Good Luck. Lucky Partners the movie starred Ronald Colman and Ginger Rogers in their only film together. The radio script was adapted by John Van Druten from the screenplay by Allen Scott.

This is the second radio adaptation of the film. In April 1941 The Screen Guild Theater broadcast a 30 minute radio adaptation with Ginger Rogers reprising her film role. In this adaptation, the role is played by Rogers’ friend Lucille Ball.

Synopsis ~ A man and a woman go partners on a winning sweepstakes ticket. In return for partnering, the man insists they go on a platonic honeymoon, despite the woman’s engagement to another man. When things get more than platonic, the man’s past is exposed and everyone ends up in court.

Lux Radio Theatre (1935-55) was a radio anthology series that adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films (”Lux Presents Hollywood”). These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences in Los Angeles. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand.

CAST

Lucille Ball (Jean Newton) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. “My Favorite Husband” eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.

Don Ameche (David Grant aka Paul Knight Somerset) began screen acting in 1935 and was immensely popular with audiences. He had a career resurgence in 1985 when he won an Oscar for Cocoon at age 77. Ameche was supposed to be featured in 1970′s “Lucy Competes With Carol Burnett” (HL S2;E24), but he withdrew and the script was rewritten for Dean Martin, who also withdrew. The role was eventually played by Robert Alda. Consequently, this radio production is the only time Don Ameche acts opposite Lucille Ball. In 1973′s “Lucy’s Tenant” (HL S6;E7) Mary Jane says she remembers seeing a movie starring Mary Astor, Jack Oakie, and Don Ameche but the three stars were never in the same film.

Arthur Q. Bryan appeared with Lucille Ball in Look Who’s Laughing (1941). He is best remembered as the original voice of Elmer Fudd in the Warner Brothers cartoons.He also was an accomplished radio actor appearing for ten seasons as Doc Gamble on “Fibber McGee and Molly.” In 1952′s “Ricky Loses His Voice” (ILL S2;E9) he played Mr. Chambers, new owner of the Tropicana, a former vaudevillian looking to return to the stage.

Verna Felton (Aunt Lucy) made her professional stage debut at the age of 10 as ‘Little Verna Felton,’ working extensively on stage. Felton was one of the most successful performers in radio, and soon went on to television. She played the persistent Mrs. Day on “The Jack Benny Show” (1955). She memorably played Lucy Ricardo’s maid, Mrs. Porter, as well as making one other appearance on “I Love Lucy.” She received two Emmy nominations for her role in the Desilu series “December Bride,” playing Hilda Crocker from 1955 to 1959 opposite Spring Byington, who, coincidentally, was in the original film of Lucky Partners playing the role she assays here, Aunt Lucy!

Carlton Kadell (Frederick ‘Freddy’ Victor Harper III) starred as “Sky King” for ABC radio. He also was heard in the “Tarzan” serials.

Leo Cleary was primarily known as a radio performer, but did two films in 1940 with Lucille Ball: You Can’t Fool Your Wife and Dance, Girl, Dance.

Norman Field began screen acting in 1945, just a few months after this radio program first aired. On radio, he was heard in hundreds of programs, including “Chandu the Magician,” “Mystery is My Hobby” and many installments of “Lux Radio Theatre.”

Noreen Gammill was a radio performer who voiced Catty the Elephant in Walt Disney’s Dumbo. She was later on screen as a background player in “The Andy Griffith Show,” filmed at Desilu Studios.

Leona LeDoux was a radio actor in the 1940s, specializing in children's voices for such shows as, "One Man's Family," "Blondie," and "Baby Snooks." Here, she is part of a live commercial for Lux.

Eddie Marr was born on Valentine’s Day 1900 in Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1938 he was seen with Lucille Ball in The Affairs of Annabel. Along with Lucille Ball, he was in the 1966 TV special “Bob Hope: 15 of My Leading Ladies" playing Joan Caulfield’s chauffeur. He was also with Lucy in “The Bob Hope Show: Bringing Back Vaudeville” in November 1970.

Charles Seel was a former vaudevillian and radio actor who acted in early silent films. Regularly on screen after 1937, he usually played small roles such as clerks, bartenders, and shopkeepers. From 1961 to 1974 Seel was a recurring character on TV’s “Gunsmoke”.

Harry Tyler did four films with Lucille Ball from 1937 to 1950. He appeared in more episodes of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” than any other actor.

John M. Kennedy (announcer)

ACT ONE

The episode is introduced by producer Cecil B. DeMille, who asks the audience to help pick the play and stars for the show’s tenth anniversary by submitting a postcard. He tells a story about Adolph Menjou in London that acts as a message about Lux Soap.

Our story unfolds in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City with the casual meeting of David, a care-free artist (Ameche) and a girl delivering books (Ball). He wishes her “good luck” and they go their separate ways. The girl, Jean, goes home to tell her Aunt Lucy (Verna Felton) that after a man wished her good luck - she was given an expensive dress that was headed for the trash after a marital squabble.

Jean spies David on the street and rushes out to offer him a business proposition. She asks him to meet her at Nick and Nick’s, a neighborhood bar and grill.

David gets a visit from Wendell, his lawyer and friend who begs him to come back to Chicago, despite his checkered past there.

At Nick and Nick’s Jean buys the last sweepstakes ticket. She is feeling lucky because of the dress and feels David may be her good luck charm. Jean is hoping to win enough money to marry her sweetheart, an insurance salesman named Freddy. David will go in on the ticket with Jean under the proviso that she let him pay for their honeymoon, which he calls “our honeymoon.”

Angry about the “our honeymoon” insult, Jean introduces David to hot-head Freddy, her future husband, who hauls David into the back alley, presumably to avenge his sweetheart’s honor. Instead, however, they return laughing instead of bruised. David has convinced Jean that they will honeymoon as brother and sister and offers that Freddy can tag along. Freddy holds on to the sweepstakes ticket for safekeeping. They have to figure out whether to wager it all on a horse or play it safe for a smaller cut of the winnings. David and Jean listen for the results of the race on the radio. They do not win. Freddy calls and it reveals that he sold her half of the ticket for $6,000 before the race! But he only sold her half, not David’s, who has lost it all. Jean gives David half anyway and David insists on the full terms of the agreement: to take her on a platonic honeymoon. Jean agrees to the ‘experiment’.

End of Act One.

A live commercial for Lux Soap consists of a letter from a consumer, Mrs. Willett, presented by Sally and Mrs. Kennedy.

ACT TWO

DeMille introduces the second act.

Jean and David are off on their ‘experimental honeymoon’ in a car David bought in her name. Jean wants to stop at a Western Union office to send a wire to Aunt Lucy and Freddy.

They arrive at a hotel in Niagara Falls, honeymoon capital of the world. Checking in as brother and sister, they go to their separate hotel rooms. They have breakfast together. David has sent Jean flowers. The hotel has taken it upon themselves to move them to adjoining rooms! An angry Freddy arrives to check up on his future wife. After finding no hint of misconduct, Freddy agrees to leave but is still not satisfied that everything is on the up-and-up. He checks in at a nearby hotel, asking for a 2am wake-up call.

In the evening, David calls Jean from his bedroom. He asks her to meet him in the hotel lobby and to wear her ‘lucky dress’. An older couple unknown to them asks them to join them on the terrace garden. They lead them to a bridge and the old man asks David to carry her over the bridge and to kiss her. The older couple performed the same ritual 50 years earlier and, thinking Jean and David are a romantic couple, want them to have the same happiness.

Rather than risk any further romance, Jean decides to go to bed. At 2am, Freddy loudly knocks on what he thinks is David’s door, but Jean answers it. They have swapped again so that Jean can have the room with the fireplace. Freddy uses a fire axe to get into David’s room, but he’s nowhere to be found. Freddy calls the front desk and is told David has checked out, but left a note for Jean.

Speeding away from Niagara Falls, a policeman pulls David over, who is driving the car he put in Jean’s name. They go off to find Jean to explain. End of Act Two.

Pause for station identification. During the break DeMille announces that the National Safety Council’s Colonel Stillwell (in New York) is presenting Lever Brothers and the show with an award. [Archival recordings do not present Stillwell’s remarks, just DeMille’s.]

ACT THREE

DeMille catches us up that Freddy, David, and Jean are facing a judge in a small town outside Niagara Falls. David reveals that he is really named Paul Knight Somerset. They are put in jail till the judge can make some sense of things.

Next morning, the case is tried. David’s true identity has the town abuzz. David’s lawyer and friend, Wendell is there to represent him, but is dismissed so that David / Paul can represent herself. Aunt Lucy testifies that David gave her an expensive dress and bought the ticket. The hotel clerk testifies that David wanted adjoining rooms for illicit purposes. Freddy testifies that David’s newfound celebrity has changed his view of David. Jean takes the stand and explains the ‘experiment’. She is cross-examined by David, addressing himself as “my client”. The judge asks some questions that make David look like a scandalous womanizer.

David cross-examines himself to clarify his true intentions and feelings for Jean. It turns out that some paintings he published in a book got him sued for libel and was put in jail on principal.

The judge convicts Freddy of being a dope and destroying a hotel door with a fire axe.

The judge acquits Jean for being naïve and too trusting.

The judge is not happy with David’s record and conduct in court. Jean objects to the judge’s comments. The spectators cheer Jean’s defense of David.

The judge makes Jean and David admit that they are in love and throws the case out of court.

David and Jean are driving back to New York. He proposes a new ‘experiment’ involving a gold ring and a local justice of the peace. They are not headed to New York City after all, but to Niagara Falls! End of Play.

CURTAIN CALL

A live commercial for lux involves a little girl and mother hanging laundry on the line.

DeMille returns to talk to Lucille Ball and Don Ameche.

Lucille reveals that Don Ameche is forming his own motion picture company and making the story of Doctor Wassell starring Gary Cooper and Laraine Day. This turns out to be a disguised promotion for the 1944 film The Story of Dr. Wassell, based on the life of real-life Navy Officer, Corydon M. Wassell, directed by DeMille himself.

DeMille announces next week’s show will star Walter Brennan, Jeanne Crain, and Charlotte Greenwood recreating their original screen roles in Home in Indiana, a film released in July 1944. The studio audibly audience gasps!

DEMILLE: “Goodnight to you, from Holly-wood!”

The story opens in Greenwich Village, a bastion of bohemian artists and romantics that thrived in the 1940s. It was the setting for My Sister Eileen, a 1938 book that inspired a 1940 play and 1942 film. It also was the setting of Don Ameche’s 1944 film. The above pulp novel was published in 1943.

Acting as his own lawyer, David cross-examines himself in court, something Lucy Carmichael later did in a 1964 episode of “The Lucy Show.”

Honeymoons and Niagara Falls have gone together for nearly two centuries. In a 1964 episode of “The Lucy Show,” Lucy’s daughter wants her mother to think she’s eloping so she leaves out a travel brochure for Niagara Falls!

In 1949, Lucille Ball desperately wanted to do Cecil B. DeMille’s The Greatest Show on Earth, but when she asked Columbia’s Harry Cohn to loan her out to MGM, he sadistically cast her in The Magic Carpet, thinking that it was such an awful script that Ball would refuse to do it, then he could suspend her, and refuse to loan her out. Instead, Lucille called his bluff and cheerfully accepted the film, knowing that it was a quickie that would be wrapped by the time The Greatest Show on Earth started filming. Fate intervened and Lucille got pregnant with her daughter Lucie and never got to make the film. It was her husband Desi Arnaz who went into business mode and told Lucy to “grab her $85,000 fee and run.” DeMille is quoted as saying,

“Congratulations Mr. Arnaz, You are the only man to ever fuck his wife, Cecil B. DeMille, Paramount Pictures, and Harry Cohn, all at the same time.”
