Reviewing New Year Sale Outfits in Twisted Wonderland

In Japan, New Year's Day (お正月, or "Oshogatsu") is the biggest holiday of the year, and it is also my favorite. That being said, the TWST artists never disappoint when it comes to the art for this event, so let's review all of the cards!

Spoiler warning for upcoming ENG and JP sever event cards, including some Groovy art!

Round 1: 2021-2022

Kalim Al-Asim (SSR)

Look at him, he's so festive and cheerful

This Kalim, as well as Deuce's SR, have a special place in my heart. I started playing TWST the summer it came out, but I wasn't a "serious" player until around New Year. Kalim and Deuce were my first "duo magic" pair, and I love their interactions in the story as well.

I love his headband ribbon and how it matches his obi. The sparkly hakama also suits him. I'm excited to see Jamil's version of this outfit as well, but we all know it'll be a very long time until Jamil volunteers to work retail during the peak season.

12/10 he's so cute

Deuce Spade (SR)

I was surprised that this was just an SR, and that you could get him by finishing the event story. His outfit is so detailed!

I chose his Groovy art so you could see that he's wearing sneakers with his outfit, which I found funny. Cater is wearing similar shoes in his own SR, so it must be part of the Heartslabyul New Year attire. It still feels very in-character for Deuce.

The silhouette of his outfit is interesting. His jacket is short like a suit jacket, but has the sleeves of a haori. There are lots of elements of his dorm uniform, like the pins and sash around his waist.

Not only does he look awesome, but he chose to work during the New Year's Sale to buy a present for his mother.

12/10 very cool and wholesome

Round 2: 2022-2023

Ruggie Bucchi (SSR)

HIS HAIR!!!

Aside from Vargas Camp and his birthday cards, Ruggie doesn't have a lot of SSRs, so I'm happy for him. I look forward to getting him in the English server soon.

I love how Ruggie seems to have picked up a lot of merchandise from around the store. Aside from a fan, which all the boys are using as their "weapons" for battles, he has a little koi bag, which I love so much (I have a similar one). The little toy he's holding is called a den-den daiko (でんでん太鼓), which is popular for young children.

11/10 congrats on getting the job, Ruggie!

Cater Diamond (SR)

I chose to show his un-Groovy art, because it's easier to see his outfit.

His clothes are similar to Deuce's, except that his "vest" is red, and he is wearing a button-down shirt underneath. The mix of Japanese and Western influences reminds me of Taisho-era clothing. He looks like Kazushi Tatsuishi in the anime version of My Happy Marriage, which also happens to be set in the Taisho Era.

It's hard to see in this picture, but he has a hairpin in his hair!

10/10 he slays

Sebek Zigvolt (SSR)

He looks so dramatic with his gloves and fur collar, but are we surprised? He's a Diasomnia student, after all. I wish they had given him a different hat, though, because it looks almost identical to his dorm uniform.

This one makes me laugh, because he poses like my dad. Not seen in this image is Sebby's neon-green geta, which I think my dad would love (he likes having shoes in unusual colors).

10/10 who needs fireworks on New Year's Eve when you have Sebby?

Vil Schoenheit (SR)

He stole the show.

At first glance, his outfit may bear too heavy a resemblance to the regular Pomefiore uniforms, since they're already inspired by kimono.

With his fascinator hat, netted gloves, and black nail polish, though, Vil adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to his outfit. He looks like he is playing the role of a Taisho-era socialite who poisoned their lover and is now actively avoiding the police.

Either that, or he got divorced from Rook. After all, it looks like he is wearing a furisode (a type of kimono meant for single women) rather than a tomesode (worn by married women), like in his dorm uniform.

11/10. The storytelling potential is limitless.

Round 3: 2023-2024

Trey Clover (SSR)

I love his scarf and hat. His coat looks longer than Deuce's and Cater's, and more like a haori. Overall, it looks like a cozy combination.

Like Cater, he is also wearing a button-down shirt under his kimono, and his vest is green. Heartslabyul is the only dorm that gets a character in this event every year, so it's nice to see that the outfits are personalized for each character.

He looks like he could be someone's uncle, but you know for sure that he'd spoil his nieces and nephews.

10/10 very classy, if he was working at the store and I came to visit, I'd trust him.

Ortho Shroud (SR)

ADORABLE.

Something I've always found interesting about Ignihyde clothing is their use of sharp shapes and geometric patterns, especially in Ortho's case. I wonder how Idia's version of this outfit would look.

Ortho and Idia must've had so much fun creating this outfit together!

Infinity/10 if Ortho were trying to sell me anything, I'd buy it, regardless of whether I actually need it.

Rook Hunt (SSR)

He's wearing RED EYELINER!

His outfit is quite different from Vil's. While Vil is wearing a furisode, which is traditionally worn by women, Rook's outfit seems to have a more traditionally masculine silhouette (of course, this is just my interpretation). This probably means that Epel will get to wear an outfit similar to Rook's next time as well.

The peacock feathers on his red hat is also a nice touch.

His pose and expression remind me of Wen Kexing from the C-drama Word of Honor. They also have similar personalities.

10/10, he looks like he just stepped out of a period drama. I look forward to seeing the fanarts of him with Vil.

Jade Leech (SR)

Jade's card has to be my favorite from this year's lineup. I just love how they translated Octavinelle's suits into kimono, while keeping details such as the purple bow tie.

I'm obsessed with his haori--it looks fluffy. I'd like to buy five.

His pose is so...

Like Trey, he looks like someone's uncle (it must be the fedora). However, unlike Trey, he looks like someone's uncle who may or may not be part of the Yakuza. Instead of giving you money on New Year, you owe HIM.

He also looks like he goes door to door selling products, and is about to sell me what he guarantees is a genuine Toshiba toaster oven and absolutely not an overpriced knockoff that will short-circuit and cause my entire neighborhood to lose electricity.

11/10 I will buy that toaster oven anyway.

Listen to the silence!!

|°Rumor:Jamil works so hard but you seem to be able to drag him away from planning kalims 2022 Christmas party! |°Rumor warning:fluff, gn!reader,sfw,overused words(?), Grammer/spelling errors,this was written at 10pm last night....It's 7am the next day. |°Keys:1,527 |°Ads: I'm so sorry if this is ooc it was rushed and I really wanted to get this one done bc I found it so cute;;I love Jamil but I can never fully write his character because he is just so rahhhh.[Event list here!]

Take a moment to imagine alone time with Jamil. Something this man hardly has, imagine how he would make a snarky comment but still lay beside you, imagine how close he is, how you can feel his hair tickle your fingers and cheek, how his breath is fanning your ear.

Jamil never has a moment's peace; no matter what time of the day he is always busy with something and today he was especially busy because kalim had asked jamil if he could hold a christmas party tomorrow. Jamil would have denied it, but he knew kalim would keep asking. With that said, you were very unsure if you should tell him to take a break. I mean– you did really want to and you knew he needed it. But then again you didn't want to disturb him and give him a sour attitude by mistake. Now look at him, with darkness under his eyes and his battery at five percent. He was hardly even there, he would space out and always was seen with a coffee or something that can give him energy- It was strange!!! Nobody ever saw Jamil like that before so it took the school by shock when they caught him dozing off in the middle of conversation.

“Hey Jamil…..” you were testing the waters to see if he was in a bad mood, Jamil who was sitting in the lounge was scribbling things down on lots of papers. Just standing there awkwardly you waited for him to answer, “Jamil?” No answer.. You took it upon yourself to just tap his shoulder instead of trying to talk to him. 

“Oh y/n, what are you doing here?” he asked, hardly taking his eyes off the paper. “I was wondering if you wanted to hang out. You seem like you need a break!” Jamil let out a long sigh, “I'm sorry y/n but I'm bus-” before he could finish his sentence kalim chimed in: “That's a great idea y/n!!” 

Jamil felt a headache coming when he heard kalim, “Kalim there is far too much to do for the party.” kalim sat there for a moment and began to think, “But you've been working too hard Jamil! How about I finish up for you!” The white haired boy was practically beaming at this point, meanwhile the black haired one tried to think of something to keep kalim away from his hard work. But he stopped when he realized it would end up useless. Kalim would always do as he pleased no matter what Jamil said, like when he tried to give Jamil a pet tiger on his birthday or the time Jamil told kalim he can't invite the music club to a asim family meeting. All those times ended up useless. “Fine.” Jamil said reluctantly, ``you were quite surprised when Jamil grabbed your hand and started taking you somewhere.

You just sat there.  Is he mad at me? You thought to yourself. Jamil hadn't spoken to you once this whole time, you felt pretty upset since you wanted to hang out but here he was sitting at the desk filling our more papers. You thought he was much kinder to you as-of-late and he would try to make conversation with you in the class or halls maybe even at  parties that you always seem to be invited to. But no, he still is the same distant Jamil viper. Or that's what you think: Jamil is a lair if he says he doesn't wanna talk to you, because he sure as hell does. (But he is rather busy at the moment so you have to wait) He actually likes talking to you, the way you say the most random yet enduring things makes his smile on the inside. He liked it when you were around him because it make him feel all happy on the inside even though you give him grey hairs from the dumb stuff you do. You can even go as far as to say he cares about you. Alot. But what was the strange feeling he felt now? It felt like an arrow just flew into him, it wasn't painful. No. It actually felt really nice. What was this feeling?

His feelings fell into shades of reds, violets, blues and yellows. But, he didn't want them– he tried to blow away from how he felt about you. But every time he blows them away like the winter wind it always seems to come back. Some called it puppy love, that kiddy hope for love that lots of children outgrew with time– but Jamil? No. Oh no, Jamil never got to experience that as a kid. So this was a foreign feeling to him. It made him wonder why a feeling danced its way to his heart when you were around and how he would subtly take care of your health or worry for you. What was that funny feeling when yall locked eyes? That same feeling returned for its encore when you had asked him a question, a phrase so simple yet so complex at the same time. “Do you wanna take a nap? With me that is.”

How was he meant to reply? Would he really stoop so low? Do you think he would fall for those glorious eyes you have? Yes. Yes he did, he fell for it all. You held such sincerity in your tone he didn't know what he wanted to do, for a moment he just looked at you with blank eyes. When he came to his senses he didn't say anything, all he did was walk over to the bed and look down at you. “.........” Silence filled the room as your thoughts began to race, “why is he just standing there????” ……….….… ………….“jamil?” You muttered, he just kept staring at you and it was creepy- well not exactly creepy just uncomfortable because it looked more like a glare. Finally he stopped staring and moved, in fact he only moved closer. You felt your face warm up with the sudden close proximity. 

Thump! 

      Next thing you know he was in your grasp, turns out Jamil moved too fast and fell, likely from the lack of sleep he was getting.  Now here you are, having Jamil in a holding position trying to keep him from leaving. “Y/N LET GO OF ME!?” Jamil screeched, “NO!? JAMIL YOU NEED TO REST!” you yelled back keeping the same energy, Jamil kept thrashing around and you kept holding him. There were some close calls when yall almost fell head first on the floor but you managed, Jamil though was fighting for his life like a rabid animal– yes after sometime he calmed down but it was still hard to make him stop moving! When he stopped moving you began your process of helping him relax.

Your hold felt like he had been graced by a warm patch of sun on a cold day. (Completely different from the choke hold ten minutes ago) It almost felt reassuring. How you whispered words of affirmation and praise in his ears, letting them rock around his head. He was praised alot so it normally wouldn't matter to him– he grew accustomed to not taking the words of others too seriously. But your words were different, your words were filled with thousands of different spices. With you, Jamil could be himself. Your words made ripples in his ocean of thoughts and caused a disturbance; it wasn't an unwanted disturbance– in fact it was welcomed with open arms! For a moment he wanted to praise you as well, he wanted to tell you how courageous you are, how much of a help you are. He wanted to explain how much he appreciates you.

Yet he stayed quiet. He didn't mutter a single word, letting the silence engulf yall two on the bed. He laid there completely devoted to relaxing, but how could he when he is so close to you, he can hear the soft thumps of your heart and your soft breathing. He continued to listen to your heart, his ears left no room for any other noise.

“Maybe just this once I can be selfish..” He mumbled just above a whisper, it took you by surprise– to hear him voice his idle thoughts like that; normally he would let them sit in the corners of his mind but just now he sat them upon the pedestal for all peering eyes to see. You hummed, letting the vibrations catch up to his ears. You saw how he turned his face away when it finally caught up to him. But you paid no mind, you took off his hair tie and slowly untied his braids. He slowly tried to raise his head up to give you a questioning look but before he could you started messaging his scalp. (You can't tell me he wouldn't like it bc he would)  He rested his head back on your torso as you started playing with his hair, rubbing his scalp and loosely rebraiding some strands, slowly but surely he fell asleep in your hold.

Kira’s Birthday!! (11/03/2022)—No Longer Accepting

Kira was perfectly prepared for the day. She was ready for her classes, as usual, but also prepared for the interview later that day. Tonight there would be a party in the Diasomnia lounge to celebrate the day of her birth. Honestly, it was all a little excessive to the young mage, but she wasn’t bothered by it. All she really needed was a small cake--a cupcake at that--and a few well wishes and she would be overjoyed. Regardless, she mentally prepared herself for all of the activities she would do on the day of her birth...but forgot to factor in her boyfriend. Her rich boyfriend who loved to spoil everyone, not just her.

“Gods...” she breathed out when she saw all of the gifts upon his bed. There wasn’t a single item there that Kira could afford with her own money, and putting them all together... It was all more valuable than her life!! She took a few slow steps closer to the bed. In a daze, she accepted the flower that was placed in her hands. It was all so sweet and her heart felt so warm, but all of this... She couldn’t take it. 

Kira looked at Kalim with her turquoise hues wide with surprise. “I-I can’t accept all of this... These gifts are all so wonderful, but it... It’s too much..!! I couldn’t afford a single thing here, and you getting me so many valuable things... It makes me feel like I’m using you to get these treasures... I want to be with you because of who you are, not because of your money. Simply getting to spend some time with you would be enough to make this my best birthday yet.” She placed a soft kiss to his lips. “If you insist it, I’ll be happy to accept the cloak and the rose... And I’ll be sure to make the most out of the items.!! But I don’t need all of this treasure. Just having you is worth more than any gold~”

Desperate pleas (Yandere Overblot Kalim x reader)

Happy Birthday to Ana! (@yandere-romanticaa) take this sunshine boi angst for both your birthdays as a present from me!

Edit on August 19, 2022: So there's this wonderful drawing the artist tagged me in, so I thought I'd link it here, it's of Kalim right before his overblot!

He was losing himself, he could feel it. Having Jamil betray his trust, he didn't want to believe it. He couldn't believe it. Though Y/n was comforting him currently it didn't help either. This was probably the first time throughout break she paid attention to him.

She was usually standing by Jamil's side. He tried convincing himself it was fine, she liked the servant instead of the one who could give her anything she wished. That's fine.

Who wouldn't like Jamil? He's smart and responsible two qualities Kalim himself knew he lacked. His magic was stronger than his. The same magic he used on him to scare everyone including her.

Ah, this wasn't good the aching pain in his heart had worsened. His vision was blurring, and he felt the tears stream down his cheeks.

Within the room fog had started to form. Y/n looked around and then she looked down at Kalim. This despair radiating from him, it was about the same as Riddle's. He looked so sad and she could see the tears. A complete contrast from his usual cheery demeanor. It made worry build up in her for him.

"Kalim-" Before she could provide any words of comfort he started laughing, it sounded forced.

"Ah, why? What did I do? Jamil's so smart, he's amazing, it's no wonder he has you too."

As a form of response rain suddenly poured down drenching them both. She instantly realized it as Kalim's unique magic. He said it only took a little mana but this downpour immediately started flooding the area.

"Kalim! You have to calm down, it'll be okay!" She had to yell over the on coming storm the water reaching her knees while it had already reached Kalim's waist considering he was on his knees already.

The coldness of the water started to bring upon shivers, she was sure she heard splashing coming from down the hall where the others had went to confront Jamil.

"I'm such a fool, but that's okay, you'll accept me like that right Y/n?" As calm as he said it the look on his face exhibited an empty feeling, it was scary to see that on him.

"Your always so nice to me, and you look out for me too. So you'll accept me that way? Ah, who am I kidding it's no wonder you fell for Jamil." He plastered that forced smile back on his face this one was twitching from smile to frown though.

Those last words were laced with spite too. Never something ever to assumed to came from Kalim, NRC's most cheerful student.

She couldn't answer him. The water started to swirl around him and her causing her to take a couple of steps back, but before she could get too far her wrist was grabbed.

For a second she almost felt as if the water swallowed her whole, she had to close her eyes. When they opened the person in front of her was no longer the Kalim she knew, this was much worser than anything Jamil had made him do under snake whisper. All of this was of his own accord.

The sultan's hat placed on his head and the new garbs he was dressed in symbolizing royalty but it didn't hide the fact that the ink floating about him wasn't dangerous and a reason to feel fear.

He seemed far more excited despite the despair that had loomed over him a moment ago. When his eyes met hers that excitement flared in his eyes a considerable amount.

"Y/n! This'll be so much fun! Just you and me! We'll dance till the night's at its end! No more traitors in the sultan's kingdom! You'll join me right?" He looked rather intense with glowing eyes and a veil of sorts covering one of them.

He had spun her around floating a bit higher in the air of the Scarabia common room. Pure joy as he held her bridal style with his newfound strength he gained. He hadn't experienced this much joy since he first realized he loved her.

To her all she had to manage was Kalim's clingyness. His insistent invites to the go on carpet rides and feasts without accepting a no. Not to mention trying to feed her at said feast. Ever since the magical shift tournament he couldn't get her radiance out of his head. This is finally his chance he always said Jamil was so much better than him in more ways than one. This was his chance to be better and finally appeal to you!

So caught up in his own head that he didn't realize she had yet give a response to him. She however was far too focused on something else entirely though as the splashing that got extremely louder since the last time she really honed in on it had entered the room.

Jamil and the others had arrived in the water logged room. Their shock more apparent then anything. Seeing someone whose demeanor had nothing but positivity be driven to overblot was unbelievable. They saw her being cradled by the dorm head smiling happily at his new found partner even though she never agreed to such a title.

A call of his love's name snapped him from his thoughts as he saw Jamil was the one who called it. It made envy and hatred bubble up in him in the form of aggression. With a wave of his hand he sent Octanivelle and Grim away a tsunami only the dorm head and his vice head left. Master and servant.

In this new form his glare seemed much more volatile when she had turned his gaze toward him at least. Different from when Jamil controlled him especially appearance wise. She could actually begin to understand how Jamil's plan was successful with the excuse of mood swings defining the dorm head's odd behavior. Now though he actually appeared more intimidating the blot had transformed him into something sinister not a facade especially with this being the real him.

He waved his hand but the effect was different this time. Jamil who had been glaring at him was surprised to find the water trailing up and forming a bubble of sorts around his head.

With a single yell of his name worrying for the safety of the person you actually loved Kalim had his attention drawn back to you. The tears that were welling in your eyes from anxiety were wiped away by a slick blot covered finger.

Jamil was starting to lose air more and more the bubbles that came from his lips were becoming more apparent. There was a pleading look in his eyes she'd never thought she'd see from him in her life. Her head was turned when Kalim grasped her chin and made her look into his ruby red eyes.

"You shouldn't feel any sympathy toward him, he doesn't deserve it. He tricked you too, what's stopping him from using his magic on you too Y/n!" His voice had gotten louder toward the end of the statement. The echoy god like tone had dripped with malice when he spoke of how the vice head could treat her.

"The world is full of dangerous people Y/n! Backstabbing traitors and assassains, I just want to protect you from all of it, please let me do that for you!" With pleading eyes it gave no room to answer him without a positive response. It would probably be the only way she could convince him to let Jamil go. Octanivelle would have to come back eventually and Grim as well. She had to have hope that the sunshine child would return from his love sick blot daze.

Gawd I love you Mal, but ffs this is ridiculous! Exactly 100 pulls for your 2022 birthday card and 62 for your 2021 birthday card.

I'm used to only pulling 10 or 20 times for a banner card and I'm not usually a lucky person. Before today I think the absolute most pulls before I got a banner card was maybe 41?

I am very happy I got both of my dragon SSRs though, but also annoyed that he played so hard to get, lol. I feel like that would be in character for him though. Like, even if Mal liked you, if he knew you liked him, I could see him playing hard to get just to mess with you and tease you. I mean he's fae and they like playing games and messing with humans per the lore so . . .

Ultimately, it was worth it because I've seen the groovy for the new card and he's so adorable and looks so happy! I also really love the groovy for his 2021 birthday card where he's on the balcony. He's so beautiful and he looks so content and serene.

It makes me really sad that after wearing all these different colors and styles of clothing he's going to go back home and presumably go back to never wearing anything but black. And not having the time to travel or enjoy all these new things he's discovering.

He seems so happy at times I'm NRC that it absolutely breaks my heart that he's likely to go back to being nearly alone in his castle and constantly busy and working all the time.

In order to not think about future possibly miserable Mal, I headcanon that he and Yuu fall in love and get married and she can help him in his duties as king so that he has time for himself. She'd also force him to relax when he overworks himself and would take him on a day trip or for a picnic or even just a long walk. I'd hope he remains friends with Cater and Kalim and I think Jack and Deuce would also be good people who could be trusted not to want to take advantage of Mal. He mentions that he wondered if someday he would find someone he could trust to be by his side the way Maleficent's crow was for her and I think he really wants that. Someone who could be his friend and be there for him who would never betray him and who would love him for who he is--not because he's a prince and famous. Not because he's one of the most powerful magic users in Twisted Wonderland and presumably also wealthy, but because they love him for being him. Just being Malleus, a normal person who just wants what everyone else wants and what some people already have.

And I headcanon that Yuu is that person. I mean this is Disney and it's not an otome game . . . but I do wonder and it gives me hope that the game says "let us show you the real happily ever after?" Disney, please give these characters their happy endings. Especially Mal because he's my favorite of course.

And full disclosure, the Yuu discussed might actually be me. Or not. Don't judge, I'm just really in love with this fictional dragon fae ok? 🐉💚🖤💚🖤💚
