Rating: E Word Count: 9.6k As Carlos returns to work after the death of his father, he tries to navigate grief with one of the simplest parts of marriage--sharing a bed with his husband.

Six minutes before midnight, TK Strand is dreaming. Carlos’s first shift back ended at ten, but by the time he’d finished processing the drunk driver pulled over on a cursory sweep, it was closer to eleven. Everything went slower at the precinct today, took him longer, like muscles readjusting after an injury. His long day of paperwork was punctuated by sympathetic gazes from colleagues, by a back to work meeting with his sergeant at the start of the day and her periodic check-ins through the afternoon. Some of his superiors sought him out to offer condolences anew, while a few of his fellow patrolmen could barely meet his eye as they passed. He spent most of the day behind a desk, guilty and grateful and readjusting slow, grey with grief and vibrating with anxiety in a way he’d thought he was past ever feeling again. His hands have been shaking a lot lately. A day spent like the resetting of a bone, longing to be whole and painless already.

And she’s paid for a brand-new dress to be made so I’ll ‘stand out’, as she put it, and new shoes, and she complained about how I look in it—my posture is off, the cut of the dress doesn’t flatter me, that sort of thing. She even said the year I spent at bloody finishing school was wasted.” Her shoulders sagged. “My mother wants me to be the best of the best and I’m afraid I’m just really not.”
