#WorldStop 1908: There were race riots, lynchings, "picnics" (pick-a-nigger) and KKK meetings. In the mist of it all We saw the light at the end of the dark tunnel and strived to make a better life for our future generations to come; through community uprisings and education. We were nothing equivalent to those so called savages and monkeys they addressed us as in the news papers. Our men were educated hard workers and well spoken. In the same breathe Black women were equally or more educated, talented and strong, but were down played because of our curves and what doesn't fall between our legs. BUT in a male dominated world of the 1900s, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle had a vision to change that; to create an organized network for women with like minds and stature to unite and uplift, enlighten, educate and serve those who were deemed inferior during that time and the years to come. Out of around 25 women who were enrolled at Howard State University during 1908-1911, Ethel along with Anna Brown, Beulah + Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Diggs Slowe, Marie Woolfolk Taylor, Joanna Berry-Shields, Norma Boyd, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Sarah Meriwether Nutter, Alice P. Murray, Carrie Snowden and Harriet Josephine Terry combined their passion, talents and scholastic abilities and founded Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. on January 15th. Thanks to them, along with its incorporation in 1913, their vision and legacy still lives on today; 107 year Later. #HappyFoundersDaySorors #J15 #AKA 馃挆馃挌馃挆馃拹馃尫馃尯馃挌馃挆 #CarryOn
