Been watching the Harley Quinn show lately. Gotta say that I personally like the third season a lot more than the first two and it just got me thinking... How much does sincerity help and contribute to humor? Because season 3 is probably the most sincere out of the seasons so far, and I genuinely think that's one of the things that makes it good.

Maybe I've just been craving something with genuine sincerity and maybe I'm just a sucker. But I really like sincerity and the new sincere direction of the latest season was very welcome in my book.

Finally caught an episode of Harley Quinn season 3, and I've been a huge fan of the whole show but... am I missing something, or has the animation quality fallen directly off a cliff? Like almost unwatchably bad? Like I could almost literally count the animation frames bad?

I'm really confused? I watched all of season 1 and 2, and remember it looking great, but I'm searching online for answers now, and no one even seems to acknowledge it at all? Did the TV channel I was watching get sent a corrupted video file or something? I'm just super confused here.

Spring 2024 served up a full season of Ava & Deborah in Hacks S3, the always delightful Abbot Elementary for its S3, and Ncuti Gatwa Fifteenth Doctor kissing Jonathan Groff on Doctor Who.

Summertime delivered Poolverine in Deadpool 3, a season of excellence with Interview with the Vampire S2, the killer finales of Umbrella Academy and Star Trek: Discovery, the continued successor to She Ra & Steven Universe in My Adventures with Superman S2, a taste of a future queerer Bridgerton in S3, the interracial interabled lesbian wedding of the year in The Dragon Prince S6, and House of the Dragon blowing up the internet for two months gay with its wonderful shenanigans—from the sept scene, to GNC-coded Rhaenyra kissing Mysaria, to Alicent going full Virginia Woolf on a MF & then proposing elopement in a 4 AM break-in.

Spooky season has the return of Jac Schaeffer to the WandaVision fam—Billy Maximoff, Teddy Altman (who he’s explicitly dating) & a bevy of PEAK lesbian activity in Agatha All Along, coming out (ha) within a month of Heartstopper S3, and the series finales of What We Do In The Shadows and Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Then, we’ll close out the year with Harlivy in Harley Quinn S5, Lady Gaga as Harley in a musical in Folie a Deux, and MF-live action WICKED PT. 1.

And this isn’t even it, y’all. This doesn’t include countless anime, cartoons, and queer shows that are gaining ground now that they’re streaming (Kevin Can F**k Himself, ILYSM).

No, it isn’t perfect. Yes, I want more and better representation. (Especially for sapphics, BIPOC queers, disabled queers, trans and GNC folks.)

But there are reasons for hope. We are moving in the right direction. 🏳️‍🌈❤️

one thing i’m really realizing about tv-watching lately is that i’m reaching a point where i can’t hold all these shows in my head. it takes so long to have a new season come out that i’ve forgotten all the details of what happened in the previous season unless it’s a show i’ve watched multiple times, which it’s usually not. then i feel like i’m doing wrong by the show by not rewatching the previous season(s) so i can watch the new one as the creators intended it to be watched, with all the emotional threads from the previous season getting picked up and returned to. like, i want those things to HIT the way they’re intended to, but usually they don’t for me in this tv-watching model because it’s been so long that i don’t remember the details of what’s going on or how i was feeling about everything going on on the show where it last left off. i can’t shake the feeling that i need to rewatch the whole show before the new season so it can register with me correctly ... but there are only so many hours in a day, i can’t do that for every single show i watch that drops a new season every year or every couple of years!

tl;dr this is why i am dreaming of majorly cutting down on the amount of tv i watch. my brain just can’t take it in this current format! there are already so many new seasons of shows i loved that i just haven’t seen for this reason. i find myself actively craving, like, limitations to my viewing so i don’t feel like my brain is going to explode. often i daydream of canceling all my streaming services except pbs passport and getting really into antiques road show and this old house.

ngl I thought GRRM's post was fake at first because it reads the exact same as like... every single reddit post that's been made since the season 2 premiere.

I'm also confused about the Helaena killing herself stuff because George states he has very little involvement in S3 beyond some conversations with Condal? It feels like he's assuming that Helaena must kill herself for no reason because Maelor isn't present, when the reality is they could've come up with another reason tied to the framework they've already set out.

I feel like he's in crisis over his legacy and going about "correcting" it in all the wrong ways.

i agree with your reddit post comparison and made the same myself. i just don't feel that it is interesting or constructive to lay out the changes from book to screen in terms of how a missing baby will impact the timeline of westerosi events. that is uninteresting to me. discussing how changes to the source text betray a fundamental ignorance/misunderstanding of its core themes is interesting (ramsay's knock off harley quinn sidepiece, giving jeyne's (and by extension, arya's) plotline to sansa, replacing jeyne westerling with a lowborn common girl robb fell in puppylove with, eliminating lady stoneheart, etc.) and worthwhile. but that isn't what this notblog did. it was a venn diagram of book vs. show with frequent pauses to say "many are saying the way i wrote it was better. and i can't help but agree."

i also agree re: his framing if helaena's show suicide. i think to say that helaena kills herself in the show "for no reason" is.... dishonest. a dragon dreamer ignored and ostracized her whole life and forced to bear her older brother's rape babies has plenty of reasons to throw herself out of a window. losing one less child doesn't make her life amazing when compared to book!helaena.

i'm not comfortable speculating over george being in crisis over his legacy but i will say that if preserving the integrity of his work in the public eye is his chief concern, he should stop selling the adaptation + licensing rights to it 🤷 if he wants his story represented accurately then he needs to be the one to bring it into being, no one else. i don't blame him for being mad that his source material wasn't stuck to, because if i wrote a book and sold the rights to it and was told hbo would produce a very book-faithful adaptation, and then hbo produced an adaptation that was widely loved but very NOT book faithful, i would be pissed. george is far from the only writer this has happened to i mean look at the southern reach trilogy vs. that total dogshit nat portman adaptation. jeff vandermeer is publicly vocally angry on twitter about that all the time.

but it was just. an odd move. to post this blog entry... i am certain george is much more upset about much more significant changes to his book than maelor the toddler being written out. and i think he decided to pull his punches and nitpick about something stupid because he's upset. but imo he should have pulled the punch all together and just not. posted this. IMO!!!

I think that, in a lot of ways, Harley Quinn s4 is mirroring the plot of s1 but with Ivy this time.

In season one, Harley was still chasing after Joker. She was so focused on him and what she wanted that she sort of forgot about everyone else. She didn't show up to help Ivy with her plan, she didn't help Clayface and the others out with the Bane thing, and she was just overall a pretty shitty friend until Ivy pointed it out.

Then we've got the statue, which symbolizes the old her, who she thought she was and wanted to be. She destroyed it after seeing the error in her ways and promised to do better, which she did.

This season, we've got Ivy so wrapped up in the Legion of Doom and what SHE thinks she wants that she's doing exactly what Harley did in s1 and forgetting that other people exist. Frank pointed it out! I think that Ivy is so focused on being such a big "villain" because she misses Harley and that part of her. She needs all this approval and validation from everyone else because the one person whose opinion she cared about is gone.

This is sort of where the statue metaphor comes in... she's trying so hard to be someone she's not because she wants approval. She wants validation. She wants what Harley wanted from Joker.

Ivy was the one to save Harley last time, but now it's Harley's turn to save her. Maybe once Harley does Ivy will destroy that statue, destroy the old her. Maybe she'll even become a hero... because honestly, I mean she's hanging out with all of these villains but has she done anything EVIL recently?

As mentioned before, Ivy's taking this route because she misses Harley. When Harley sleepwalks, I don't think it's as much her missing being a villain than it is her missing Ivy. They were so close in s3 and now they've barely exchanged words in s4! I'm a little disappointed in this season so far, but I do hope I'm right and Ivy sees the error in her ways and patches things up with Harley. (Also, let's remember that Ivy never even classified herself as a real villain before this! She's helping the environment!)

anyway this was poorly explained lmk what yall think
