Harm wakes up to the sensation of your fingertips trailing over the scars that line his back and shoulders. The sun is streaming through the gap in the blinds warming his skin as the lightweight sheets drape over his hips. He sighs contently, revelling in your touch. He’s missed mornings like this, ones where he wakes up along side you.

The worst part of the deployments are the mornings that he forgets. When he rolls over half asleep in his rig and reaches for you, only to find you absent.

Nobody has ever made him feel the way that you do, he’s never felt so loved or revered. He longs for that when he’s away.

“How long do I have you for?” You ask him.

There wasn’t time to talk about that last night, he’d got distracted by other things, undressing you, making love to you.

“Forever.” He says half seriously as he turns to face you.

He’d marry you tomorrow if you’d have him.

But you’re not ready for that yet.

He’s not sure you ever will be.

Your last husband had put you through the ringer, he’d manipulated you, cheated on you, made you think it was all in your head. That marriage had been a noose around your neck, slowly choking you to death. You’d barely escaped intact.

You’d both fallen into an easy pattern of landing wherever the other ended up until that point. He barely spent any time at the loft in Union Square, he was always wherever you were. New Orleans, LA, Hawaii, a memorable few months in Sydney.  You’d been together three years when you’d decided to settle in Washington. Harm had never asked for it, it was a choice you’d made on your own volition. Washington was his territory, the place he called home. You’d ended up staying with him for a few days, that had turned into months and before he knew it the two of you were living in domestic bliss.

“Why don’t we look for a place together?” He had asked you one night when you were working at his desk, the one that had very quickly become yours.

It was then that you’d pulled out the listing for the house in Georgetown. You’d been trying to figure out a way to ask him about it for over a week. It was a sign that you wanted to take another risk with him, that you were willing to make a commitment.

“You don’t have to hide things like this from me.” He’d reassured you as he’d drawn you into his lap. “I want everything with you, as much as you can give me.”

“A house in Georgetown is the best I can do for now.” You’d told him, your fingertips ghosting along the line of his cheek. “I don’t know if I’ll ever…”

He’d kissed you then because there had been such uncertainty in your eyes and he’d wanted to chase it all away.

“It’s enough for me.” He’d promised you, his forehead coming to rest upon yours. “You’re enough for me.”

He’d meant it then, and as he lies in bed with you and looks into your eyes, he wants you to know he  still does now.

Whatever you’re willing to give, he’s honoured to have.

The crop duster and the cow farmer

Hi everyone! I haven’t really been inspired to write a Harm/Mac ficlet in a while - I was hoping that the appearance on NCIS: LA might inspire me, but it didn’t. Then @choosingyou and I started talking about Harm working as a crop duster and how we needed more Harm and Keeter on the show - and this little ficlet happened. It actually has nothing to do with Harm’s time as a crop duster on the show - it’s completely AU!  @choosingyou​, this ficlet is for you - thank you for the ideas!!

Just as the sun began to sink below the horizon, an elderly woman leaned against a cane on the front porch of her old farmhouse, watching two youthful figures make their way along the winding dirt path that led from the barn.

The work never ends on a farm, Sarah Rabb mused, so it certainly doesn't hurt to have some help.

Her grandson’s lean, six-foot-four frame was easy to spot.  Harmon Rabb, Junior, wore faded jeans and a white tank top with his favorite leather flight jacket slung casually over his shoulder.  His friend, Jack Keeter, nearly matched him in height, but Jack had a bulkier figure that filled out his own well-worn jeans and T-shirt.  Both men were sweaty and well-tanned from spending time in the summer sun, looking more like a pair of country farmhands than U.S. Navy fighter pilots.

Harm and Jack were both spending their summer leave on the farm, helping Sarah with the chores and crop dusting in Harm's prized Stearman.  The little yellow biplane had belonged to his father, and Harm had taken extreme care to restore its condition and add a crop dusting mechanism so it could be used on the farm.  He had spent so many hours working on the plane out in the barn that Sarah had finally started calling it an airplane hangar.

“Did you boys finish that corn field on the far edge of the farm?” Sarah called out as Harm and Jack approached the porch.

“Sorry, Grandma,” Harm said. “We didn’t make it there before the sun went down.”

Sarah eyed her grandson suspiciously.  “I see,” she said.  “Too busy flying those fancy stunts over the MacKenzie cow farm?”

Harm cringed guiltily.  “You saw that, Grandma?”

“I didn’t need to see it,” Sarah informed him.  “Joe MacKenzie’s cows were making such a ruckus that I could have heard them in the next county over.”  She sighed heavily.  “Well, it's getting too dark for you to fly now.  You'll have to get to it after the sun comes up tomorrow.  Why don't you boys come on inside?  Dinner is just about ready.”

“Nothing like downing a cold beer after a long day’s work on the farm,” Jack declared, taking a long swig of his frothy drink and reclining lazily in one of the chairs on the porch.

After a hearty dinner, Sarah had retired for the evening, leaving her grandson and his friend to share a drink and relax on the porch as the harsh heat of the summer day finally cooled down.

"You know it," Harm agreed, clinking his bottle against his friend's.  "Crop dusting is a real glamorous business."

"Well, you just need to put some missiles on that Stearman and pretty soon they’ll be asking you to land it on a carrier next to the Tomcats."

Harm rolled his eyes and took a sip of beer.  "I told you, Keeter, I'm done flying for the Navy.”

“So now what?  You're just gonna dust crops for the rest of your life? I don't buy it,” Keeter said, shaking his head.  “That ain’t you, Harm.  Your grandma says you just got accepted to law school.  You ever decide if you’re going or not?”

But Harm didn’t get a chance to reply as their conversation was interrupted by the loud rumbling of a truck engine and the sound of tires crunching on gravel.  In the fading twilight, Harm had to squint a little, but he quickly recognized the rickety old truck sputtering up the driveway.

"Mac?”

Harm was surprised to see the pretty brunette jump out of the truck and hurriedly pull on a baggy sweatshirt over her dusty blue coveralls.  Sarah MacKenzie ran the cow farm next door with her father, and she and Harm had known each other for years.  As Keeter so bluntly put it, Harm had ‘fallen hard and fast for the girl next door.’

Mac gave Harm a warm smile. "Hey, Harm.  Welcome back to the farm.  Sorry I'm so late with your grandma’s milk delivery.  Hello, Jack."

Keeter’s eyes brightened. "Well, what do you know?  The little lady remembers me.”

Mac laughed.  "Now how could I forget the guy who dumped me in the cow trough last time he was here?"

"Jack Keeter would never do such a thing," he swore solemnly.  "That was all Rabb...oof!”  Jack let out a loud grunt as Harm punched him solidly in the arm.

Harm set his beer on the step and hopped off the porch to help Mac bring in the milk.  "So how have you been, Mac?”

“Busy,” Mac replied.  “My father got a few new cows last week, but they're not producing any milk.  I think they're terrified by the new crop duster who’s been buzzing their pasture.  You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?”

The knowing smile and the mischievous twinkle in her eye instantly kept Harm from making up any excuse.  Mac simply knew him too well.  Instead he just flashed her an innocent grin and reached for one of the milk crates, accidentally bumping into her arm.

“Ouch!”  Mac gasped and jumped back, clutching her arm and grimacing in pain.

“Mac, are you okay?”

When it took her more than a moment to catch her breath, Harm quickly reached for her arm, pulling up the sleeve of her sweatshirt until he found a dark purple bruise with an ugly yellow tinge developing around the edges.

Mac immediately yanked her arm away and pulled her sleeve down.  "I'm fine, Harm."

“That bruise doesn't look fine, Mac,” he argued.  “Did your father do that to you?”

He expected her sharp tongue to fire another nasty retort back at him, but she surprised him when she just shrugged silently and turned away, refusing to meet his eyes.

It was no secret in town that Mac’s mother had abandoned the family years ago due to her husband's heavy drinking and abusive behavior.  Although the authorities could never prove that Joe MacKenzie inflicted the same abuse on his daughter, Harm had always suspected it – and feared it.

"Mac..."

"Let it go, Harm."

Mac’s tone was flat, and her brown eyes clouded over with sadness as she snatched the milk crate from his hands. She made her way up the steps and into the farmhouse, letting the door slam in Harm’s face behind her.

The last trace of daylight was completely gone by the time Mac emerged from the house, but even in the dark, she could recognize the silhouette of a familiar figure sitting on the porch steps.

“You’re waiting for me,” she said accusingly.  “What happened to Keeter?”

“I sent him down to fix the plane so it’s not as loud next time we fly over the cows.”

Mac scoffed.  “Something tells me the problem has more to do with the pilots and less to do with the plane.”

“It’s possible.”

Mac could just picture the smug look on his face, and she could feel her lips starting to form a smile. There was just no way to ever take the fighter pilot out of him.  And when he made her smile like that, she couldn’t stay mad at him for long. Finally relenting, she lowered herself onto the porch steps next to him and leaned in to give him a gentle nudge with her shoulder.

“Hi,” she said softly.

“Hi.”

“How’s the crop dusting business?” she asked.

“Not bad considering my career as a naval aviator is over,” Harm admitted.

“Night blindness,” Mac said. “Your grandma told me.  I’m sorry, Harm.”

He didn’t have a response for her, and they were quiet for a few minutes, both lost in their thoughts while enjoying each other’s company underneath the stars.  When Harm reached over and gently ran his fingers up and down her arm, tracing the jagged purple bruise, Mac sighed just a little, deciding that she liked the pleasure that coursed through her arm at Harm’s touch rather than the searing pain that had shot through it when her father had twisted it so violently.

“I’m going to law school in the fall, and I want you to come with me, Mac.”  Harm broke the silence in one rushed breath.  “We’ll get as far away from here as we can and get away from your father.  Make a life somewhere else.  There has to be more to life out there than crop dusting and cow farming for you...”  He took a deep breath and then added softly, “...for us.”

Harm threaded his fingers through hers and caressed her palm with his thumb, feeling his heart beat a little faster as Mac squeezed his hand and rested her head against his shoulder.

She didn't say anything for a long time, and the nerves were beginning to knot inside Harm’s stomach when he felt her pull back just enough to gaze at him with wondering eyes.  "Every time I think the pieces of my life are jumbled beyond repair," she said, "you always show up to put them back together.  Will you always be there?”

“Yes.”

There was no hesitation in his answer, but Mac still sighed a little sadly.  “Harm, don’t make a promise you can’t keep,” she warned.

But Harm’s resolve didn’t waver and his reply was strong and sure.

“I haven’t yet.”

Fic Writer Questions!

 1) How many works do you have on AO3? I’ve got 40 so far (of which 25 are SPN fics). There’s more to come! 

2) What’s your total AO3 word count? 486,667, apparently. That tells me each of my fics has an average wordcount of 12,166.675… Seems about right. I was never any good at keeping things short.

3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? Uhh… On AO3 I’ve written for Supernatural, Supernatural RPF, X-men (Cherik) and McFassy (James McAvoy/Michael Fassbender). But I’ve written a lot when I was younger that has never made it online, including NCIS, Pirates of the Caribbean, and lots of weird one-shorts starring everyone from Michael J. Fox to Kevin Sorbo from “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys”. 🤨  

4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos? “A Lesson to be Taught” – an SPN Wincest pwp fic where a dominant Dean fucks (and spanks) Sam and they discover that Dean apparently has a daddy!kink. Comes with a photo manipulation too! There be dick.    

“Taking Game” – a semi-dark medieval Cherik (Charles Xavier/Erik Lehnsherr from X-men) AU. Basically, Charles is a poacher hunting on king Erik’s land to his great dismay. And so, he’s captured and gets the choice between losing his life or serving the king for a bit… Dubcon and smut ensues.   “Only Like This” – a little SPN Wincest dub-con fic about hopelessly pining Dean doping Sam just so he can touch and kiss his oblivious little brother. It’s okay. Sam won’t remember when he comes to.   “It’s Only Carnal” – A dark SPN Wincest noncon fic where soulless!Sam needs to blow off some steam. And when it comes to carnal activities his brother isn’t exactly a novice – so why not use Dean’s body to make them both feel good?   “Demonized” – a long and dark af SPN noncon fic written in collaboration with the awesome @palishere. Sam is captured by some nasty demons who use him to lure in his brother. At first it seems the demonic scumbags are just really perverted and have a weakness for sexual torture, but they turn out to have ulterior motives…  

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not? Yes, always. I think it can be a bit demotivating for a reader to leave a comment and get zero response – and so, they might not bother to comment on the next fic. At least, that’s how I feel personally. And besides, I really want to let readers know that I appreciate them taking the time and effort to actually tell me what they think.  

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? Oufff… Seriously? How can I possibly pick just one when 99.8 percent of my fics are not only dark af but have gut-wrenching ambiguous endings as well? I, err… I’m gonna have to think really hard about this one, hold on… *Insert buzzing cicada sound*… Uhh… Well, I guess it might be�� “Play or Pay” – a dark female!reader-insert Wincest fic where demon!Dean has you and Sam trapped somewhere underground. Sam ends up being on the receiving end of the demon’s cruelty when he tries to save you. Using Dean’s body the demon ends up raping Sam while the reader tries to escape to get help... There’s a little twist in the end. Loads of dead dove here, including death (not Dean or Sam).     “The Orange Hour” – where undercover inmate!Dean has to rape CO!Sam in order to save both of their lives and get them out of the jail in one piece. It doesn’t go completely as planned. (Comes with an nsfw photo manipulation).  “Demonized” – loads of bottom!Sam torture, full of hurt and absolutely no comfort... It’s just… I dunno, I think I and @palishere had a collective meltdown in the noncon and angst department. Sorrynotsorry.      

8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? Nope, I’ve never in my life written a crossover. Usually, I’m too laser-focused on 1 obsession at a time. I can’t multitask, okay?   

9) Have you ever received hate on a fic? Yes, the fandom purity police has visited me on AO3. The usual self-proclaimed know-it-alls vomiting their bullshit all over the comment section about how “problematic” noncon is and how “sick” I must be. I thought about moderating comments for a while, actually – but I just deleted their follow-up comments until they left me alone. 😤

10) Do you write smut? If so what kind? Yes!! Gimme! Usually, I write noncon smut or just good ol’ pwps that feature some sort of dominance. That’s it. That’s my jam. In general, the only smut I don’t write is the cute, fluffy, feel-good, cuddly stuff… My smut’s usually pretty rough and/or some sort of dub/noncon.

11) Have you ever had a fic stolen? Yes. Someone stole “It’s Only Carnal” and posted it as her own on some Portuguese fanfiction site. She even replied to comments, answered questions and talked about how much she loved writing it, etc… Luckily a sweet mutual on Tumblr let me know about it and I reported her for plagiarism. The stolen fic was taken down shortly after and the account deleted. Goddamn thief. 😡  

12) Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes. Honestly, I can’t remember which fic(s). But people have contacted me on AO3 and asked for permission to translate my stuff into Chinese. I have - of course - happily allowed them to. It’s such an awesome compliment to get, I think!  

13) Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, 2. “Demonized” and the fluffy Ficfacers prompt fic “The Masks We Wear” starring Sam and Dean taking their pranks a step too far. Basically, the brothers get angry with each other and they need to talk it out… No smut in this one, can you believe it?!! But that was kinda the prompt we received. The prompt was literally: “Sam and fluff”. Anyways, both fics are co-written with the lovely @palishere. You can find her AO3 here. 😊

14) What’s your all time favorite ship? Wincest!!! Definitely. Gimme all the brotherfucking, please. No contest. And coming in on second place I guess there’s Samifer – never paired consensually, though. I just love Lucifer messing with Sam’s head and torturing him in all kinds of cruel ways.    

15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? Oh, that’s a mean question… I have a noncon WIP where Sam and Dean are in prison. I wrote a whole story outline, gathered my own little dictionary of prison slang, etc… But I never made it past page 10 or something. Sam was supposed to get jumped by a gang of inmates and then Dean was supposed to helplessly watch from the sideline, offering to trade places if they’d just leave his little brother alone… And after that it’s all about a mix of healing and vengeance… But the story has been lying on the shelf for more than a year and I doubt I’ll ever continue it. Oh, wait! I almost forgot – I have a long Cherik WIP sequel to “To Have and to Hold”! Just checked, its wordcount is 18,729! Holy crap…. What a waste, huh? But I honestly don’t think I’ll ever finish it, because I’m not into Cherik anymore. That ship has kinda sunk for me…. So, now I’m hyperfixating on Supernatural, yeah?     

16) What are your writing strengths? Description, I think. I just love details and setting the mood. I like to think I’m pretty good at writing in English too even though it isn’t my native language… I wish to be better and expand my vocabulary but I’m doing okay nonetheless.

17) What are your writing weaknesses? Description, I think. Yes, you read correctly. I often describe things TOO much. Sometimes to the extent where the pacing gets so slowed down that I feel like the scene loses its ‘feel’. I don’t know if it’s just in my head, but that’s my major concern about my writing. That and my signature ambiguous endings, lol.

18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? Love it. It can be difficult to pull off, but if you get it right it can be magical. Just don’t overdo it and make sure that the reader can follow. I don’t think I have any fics online where I do it, but I’m not a complete stranger to it either.

19) What was the first fandom you wrote for? Ack, my poor brain trying to go back to when I was friggin’ 13… You know how many years ago that was?! 25!!! Okay!? *Huffs*…. Anyway, I THINK it might’ve been Keanu Reeves’ character in “Johnny Mnemonic”. Or maybe David James Elliott’s character as Harmon Rabb in the early seasons of “JAG”. I dunno. Either way this question makes me feel really old and I don’t appreciate it. Don’t @ me. 😅   

20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? That’s probably a tie between “The Orange Hour” and “It’s Only Carnal”. They’ve both got nice pacing and that’s my biggest challenge, I think. Also, I love the whole Morse code thing in “The Orange Hour”. I don’t even know what happened or how I came up with it, but hey, I can surprise myself if I want to, I guess! And of course there’s the smutty noncon and all of the hurt… So, those two fics are my personal faves. 😏

Under the cut, because my history of shipping, or multishipping (because you know me, but I only put in gifs of single ships, b/c tumblr gif inserting function hates me), is a bit long even with only hyperfixations.

1. Victoria Hughes/Lucas Ripley (Station 19)

Ah, yes, I’m back in this hellhole, rereading fanfic, because Grey’s & 19 are back and easy to watch legally without jumping through hoops and I know I’d said I wouldn’t but then I was bored and now I have all these feels again. (I’ll say a few things on it in a separate post when the season’s done in three eps.)

Anyway, this one slammed into me last spring out of the blue, but how could I not ship it when it checks all the right points? 

2. Garcia Flynn/Lucy Preston (Timeless)

Another Kripke show, and third time being the charmed, Kripke and co. actually learned from their past mishaps and actually made a good show (except the finale, but what finale? I don’t know it.)

So, there’s this tall, dark, brood, and bad (or maybe not) and lil’ miss goody two shoes (or maybe not) who get each other, what’s not to ship?

3. Bellamy Blake/Roan (The 100)

(No gif, b/c it’s a minuscule ships with maybe 5 gis and tumblr is a bitch, nothing shows up in search and apparently now you can’t save & reupload gifs - which is a good thing, finally, should’ve done it sooner.)

Oh, boys! My boys. I love(d) them so much. The last ship I have written extensively for - even the most extensively after Revolution (I, mean I only published one short oneshot, but the 35K monsterfic that is 3/4 done is still there in my drafts and I still think about it and them, because dammnit.)

Also very good with Clarke thrown in, or just Roan and Clarke (which I also managed to publish a fic for and kudoses that still come on the regular keep my writing heart at least hibernating and warm - here’s to hoping it wakes up from hibernation one day and I can write again.)

4. Shelby Wyatt/the Haases (Quantico)

Yes, all of them. Even Claire, because why not. And I’m sure if they had had the sister on the show, I’d have shipped her with her, too. 

(I mean, I’d say I only shipped Shelby separately with each of them and I didn’t think of also poly shipping them, but that would be a lie and hardly the worst thing I’ve ever thought of shipping.

I hardly said anything about it on here because that was the peak of Moral Purity Wars time on here and Shelby was wildly hated across fandom, ugh, so I jsut squealed a lot inwardly. 

5. Grant Ward/Leo Fitz & Jemma Simmons/Sunil Bakshi (Agents of Shield)

Ugh, then there was this shitshow I loathe. But for a while there, there were good things. And now we’re really getting into my multishipping tendencies. 

I started with Fitzward, surfed Skyeward, and then hurled straight into Bakshi/Simmons, also managed to write a ton of fic for the first and the last, but none for the middle. 

(That was also the era when I was into highly questionable stuff, like I may or may not have half a notebook of a Ward/Simmons/Rumlow fic somewhere, oops. But I have no regrets, so we understand each other. And that isn’t the worst thing that’s ever come across my shippery imagination, either.)

6. CM2 or Charlie/Miles/Bass (Revolution)

The best fandom had the best ships! 

Who even got me into this show? It may even have been @lglorien​ who mentioned the new Kripke show when we were both binging SPN that summer. And then she didn’t even watch all of it and left me to suffer on my own. 

Well, not on my own, because I found the best fandom along the way, so yay!

Anyway.

If you think knowing Miles was Charlie’s uncle stopped from shipping them from the moment she stepped in The Grand in the pilot and he was an asshole to her, you don’t know me. Then Miloe flashbacks happened in ep. 3. And I simultaneously started shipping that and noticed Charlie and Bass have things in common (mainly, Miles being an asshole to them, as it turned out later.)

But there were so many other good ships (Jeremy x everyone, yes?) and some random minor ones, including one or two of only my own concoction. 

And nobody hated anyone for shipping. The best of times, really. 

7. Elijah Mikaelson x everyone (TVD/TO)

Elijah is very shippable with anyone, but Elijah/Elena - there’s a lady who’s not on tumblr anymore (Hazel) that got me into this, and Elijah/Elena/Klaus - the fault of Sandrine_Shaw on AO3′s fics - were on top of my faves (and still are, TBH.) 

You know, when itsy bitsy vulnerable human dares (the nerve! negotiate with a big bad original? Elijah was impressed. And so was I. The rest was history. 

And for the second, well, when the two Original dumbasses keep falling for the same version of one woman, the solution is rather obvious. 

8. Dean Winchester/Sam Winchester & Dean Winchester/Castiel (SPN)

Yes, I was a Wincest shipper, that shouldn't surprise anyone. Because the early seasons had their charm. And then Cas showed up and jumped onto a Destiel bandwagon as well. So, yeah. 

9.  Buffy Summer/Spike (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) 

There were a few years when I had to much work and studying to watch things, so now this trip into shipping history brings us to early 2000s/1990s. 

I liked Buffy/Angel well enough, but Buffy/Spike was it! I mean, he went to get his soul back for her. That scene when he’s hugging the cross haunts me to this day. Enough said. 

10.  Harmon Rabb Jr./Sarah MacKenzie (JAG)

Oh, god, Harm and Mac! Ship of all ships. The show tried to throw three different women at him and the third stuck. And we had to go through 8 seasons of slowburn then. A+++++

And, um, yes I shipped Mac with Webb for a while, too, because it’s me. 

But yeah. As far as I’m concerned Harm and Mac are happily married and managing their careers and NCIS: LA can bite me with their BS in last season finale. . 

11. Xena/Gabrielle (Xena: Warrior Princess)

Back when my very catholic grandma watched Xena and Hercules with me and also shipped Xena/Gabrielle, because ‘sometimes girls like girls, it’s nice’. Good times. 

I also crosshiped her with Herc, a bit. and definitely had a thing for Xena/Ares. Yep, my ship type started showing early.

Conflict in Relationships

I think that a lot of us have major pet peeves when it comes to relationship conflict, as a lot of writers (especially with TV and movies) do conflict for the sake of drama. There’s nothing that’s more annoying than watching characters who are great for each other break up over a minor inconvenience or a conflict that doesn’t make sense (*cough cough* Hodgela and Willoz *cough cough*).

Now, I’m writing a ship that’s canon x oc, and there are many reasons why it’s among my favorite canon x oc ships. It’s Harmon Rabb Jr./Riona Gallagher, taking place in the world of “JAG”. Harm and Riona are the typical friends-to-lovers, mutual pining, slow burn that we all love. And adding Riona into the show changes very little of the overall canon story lines other than the romantic relationships.

And the conflicts that arise between them come from who they are as people.

Example 1:

Harm’s brother is a POW. He makes a snap decision without consulting anyone else to resign his commission with the Navy and go deep into Russia to try and save him. (His father was shot down on Christmas Eve when Harm was 6, and Harm never got the chance to save him.) Harm has had communication issues in the past with previous relationships. He and Riona argue about him doing this, because Riona’s worried about him doing something that could quite easily end with him dying. 

Riona knows that Harm has a tendency to make a decision without totally thinking about it, sticking to it, and not talking to people who should be talked to (ie. her, his girlfriend). But she’s not really mad about that as much as she’s upset about the fact that he is hard pressed to go to certain death. She’s got abandonment issues, and she doesn’t want to lose him. Harm gives her an out, and she just kind of looks at him and goes “My feelings aren’t going to change. I love you. If we break up, and something happens to you, I’ll just have a dead ex-boyfriend instead of a dead boyfriend.”

Harm doesn’t end up going anywhere, as a CIA friend of his manages to secure Sergei’s release. Harm goes to see Riona, and he apologizes for not telling her before hand, and he hopes that she knows how much she means to him. He doesn’t want her to ever feel like he’s abandoning her.

AND HARM LEARNS FROM THIS. 

About five years later, he basically goes to do the same thing when Mac finds herself in trouble. And he talks to Riona first. They’ve just gotten engaged, and he talks to her. She agrees and tells him that he better bring Mac home. Because she knows how important Mac is to him, and she knows that he’s the kind of man who will do whatever it takes.

Example 2:

Their close friends, Mac and Brumby, get engaged. Harm had asked Riona to move in with him about the same time. He asks her a little after if she’s upset that he hasn’t proposed, as they’ve been romantically involved about the same amount of time as Mac & Brumby, but they’ve known each other for far longer. 

This leads to a good long talk about their feelings and how just because they may not get married for a while doesn’t mean that they don’t have just as good of a relationship. She knows that his job keeps him very busy, that his career is not slowing down, and that she doesn’t need to have a ring to know he loves her. She tells him that their relationship is just that theirs.

And this becomes a common theme!!! They talk about their feelings! They work through their insecurities! They make sure that the other person feels loved! 

And, when Harm finally proposes, he is basically like “I don’t know why I waited this long, because my career is probably never going to slow down, and it’s always been you. It may have taken me a long time to figure that out, but I didn’t need another five years to figure out that I want to marry you and be with you for the rest of my life.”

And it’s good!!!!!

Conflict in relationships should stem from who the characters are and should be natural!!! Conflict in relationships should help build them to be a more solid couple (or whatever amount of people is in the poly group)!!!! 

Don’t make conflict just to have drama! Don’t do that! It’s horrible and often makes the characters act wildly out of character!

Crime drama shows have a bit of everything fans want to see. The drama of solving crime, the gallows humor, and getting attached to the main characters. But there's another aspect to some popular crime dramas that made them memorable: the romance.

As the main characters go through the trial and tribulations of solving cases and costly being around each other, there's likely some romantic tension between them; one that evolves into love. Thus becoming partners in crime-solving and life.

10 Grissom & Sara (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation)

The CSI franchise gave audiences new insight into solving crime by steering away from the detectives and instead toward the inner workings of the forensics lab. In the original series, Grissom (William Petersen) has feelings for his teammate Sara (Jorja Fox). Their on-screen romance was even nicknamed by fans as GSR (Grissom Sara Romance).

Sara was brought in to join the team by Grissom after meeting at a lecture. It was clear they had some sort of relationship early on, but this became more obvious in season four before finally being revealed in season six. Their relationship was rocky throughout the show, yet they always came back to each other.

9 Healer & Young-shin (Healer)

Fans have easily fallen in love with the romance story in the K-drama thriller Healer. The show has gotten rave reviews as it partnered a mysterious "night courier," with impressive combat and hacking skills, with a second-rate reporter. What had fans rooting for the couple was their unconventional romance in the midst of solving murders.

Young-shin (Park Min-young) uncovers the truth behind her dark past leading her to suffer from panic attacks. The night courier codenamed "Healer" (Ji Chang-wook) becomes her protector after being assigned to her by his boss. As they try to solve a 1992 incident along with present-day murders, they fall in love.

8 Shawn & Jules (Psych)

USA Network's Psych became one of cable television's most popular detective comedy-dramas. It strayed away from traditional shows and had a unique storyline. Shawn Spencer (James Roday) posed as psychic and becomes the SBPD's consultant. In reality, he really only has keen observation skills he passes off as psychic.

Juliet, or Jules (Maggie Lawson), is one of the main detectives in the show who at first is skeptical of Shawn. She finds his unconventional ways of investigation bizarre but believes in his ability to help. It soon turns into a romance. Shawn and Jules finally start dating in season five. Their relationship gets messy when Jules learns he's not really psychic; Shawn even considers throwing his gimmick away to get her back. By the end, he proposes.

7 Mac & Harm (J.A.G.)

Fans of NCIS know the show was originally a spin-off of the popular show J.A.G. It revolves around Harmon "Harm" Rabb Jr. (David James Elliot) and Sarah Mackenzie (Catherine Bell) who work to prosecute those accused of military crimes. It was no surprise the two characters would end up developing feelings for one another.

Throughout the show, there was obvious tension but also denial. Towards the end, they finally open the flood gates. They decide to get married but are at odds end of who would retire from duty. The show ends with a coin toss and fans still don't know the outcome.

6 Maddie & David (Moonlighting)

Moonlighting was one of Bruce Willis' claims to fame as an actor. The comedy-drama was about two detectives solving cases through their Blue Moon Detective Agency. The show starts with Maddie (Cybill Shephard) losing her assets and money and almost selling the agency. David then convinces her not to and instead, they become business partners.

The show was driven by sharp dialogue and sexual tension between the characters. The dynamics were interesting to watch as Maddie was a former model who has a drastic career change; David was rougher around the edges. They would sometimes clash, but they still made a good team.

5 Chloe & Lucifer (Lucifer)

Despite Lucifer being tagged as a fantasy show, it still includes police procedural and comedy-drama elements. The show created one of the more unconventional partnerships that had fans hooked. Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) is through with playing the King of Hell and now lives a lavish life on Earth.

When his friend is murdered, Lucifer meets Chloe Decker (Laura German). He becomes a consultant to the police department and aids Chloe in solving murders all while using his looks, connections, and "what do you desire" trick to solve cases. Their relationship stood the test of time as Chloe learns Lucifer really is the Devil.

4 Jake & Amy (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

Fans were enthused to see Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero) get together rather quickly in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. They have had their memorable moments on the show that were crucial in their relationship. Like when Jake realizes he likes Amy after winning a bet.

The two detectives were opposites who were somehow perfect for each other. Amy was neat, organized, and by the book, while Jake liked to have fun and wing it. Their love for each other blossomed even in the most difficult situations. Like when their wedding is sabotaged but ended up being the most perfect display of what's important to them.

3 Fox & Dana (The X-Files)

While The X-Files was all about debunking and battling the paranormal, it still counts seeing as the main characters went through death-defying situations together to uncover the truth. The show's format inspired plenty of crime series. Alongside the bizarre cases was also a developing romance between Fox (David Duchovny) and Dana (Gillian Anderson).

The characters were on opposite ends of the spectrum as Fox truly believed in the paranormal while Dana stuck to her scientific guns. There was always tension between them, but it took a while for both of them to admit their feelings for one another. Nine seasons, to be exact.

2 Castle & Beckett (Castle)

Who knew a mystery writer and an NYPD detective would make a good pairing? Castle was a popular crime drama starring Nathon Fillion and Stana Katic as Richard Castle and Kate Beckett. Castle is a mystery writer with a serious case of writer's block.

He's brought in for questioning when there's copycat murder using his stories as inspiration. At first, Beckett dislikes Castle's charm and eagerness to help in solving cases for inspiration. Along the way, his abilities as a writer prove useful, and they soon start to have feelings for each other. Their relationship is strained at times due to their stressful and dangerous work, but they make it through and even get married.

1 Temperance & Booth (Bones)

Bones was another crime drama with a unique spin on solving murders. Instead of the traditional forensics team and the local police department, it took a different route. It focused on Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel), a forensic anthropologist and her team at the Jeffersonian. Along with the aid of the FBI and special agent, Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).

The two characters don't exactly hit it off as Temperance speaks her mind and bases her opinion on facts. Booth is more inclined to the human emotional side of things. As the season progressed, they have a deep understanding of each other beyond being just friends and colleagues. They finally admit their feelings and have a profound relationship. One that even rattles the cage of a certain criminal.

K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?

Hmm... come up with that I’d never write is probably the sporadic “what if you killed off all the people your fav character loves???” ideas that pop into my head.

That I would write/have written? Probably a tie between my entire fic based around Harm being captured and tortured and a planned angsty fic for Alex involving doing some extremely questionable things in the mission to bring down Cadmus.

Ladies and gents we got ourselves a crossover! Refs to both Ally's career in JAG and Beau being a flyboy.

It’s in a park by The Naval Yard that Mac first sees Harm again. It’s been nine years since she last laid eyes on him and he still looks as handsome as the day he packed his bag and walked out the door.  He’s standing alongside the coffee kiosk, hands tucked into the pockets of his dark overcoat as he surveys the menu board fixed the outer wall.

She doesn’t expect to see him back in Washington DC, the last she heard he was seeing a girl down in New Orleans, spending all his shore leave celebrating Jazzfest and Madri Grais. That man, she’d thought at the time, he’ll never grow up.  

She hasn’t had a single successful relationship since she left Harmon Rabb and she blames him for that. She blames him for a lot of things. The two of them had made a pact when they’d flipped that coin, he was supposed to stay out of the service, live life as a civilian in San Diego. They’d get married, have a couple of kids.

It had worked for a while but then he’d run into Ally again and it had all started to fall apart. The Admiral's Wife, Mac calls her, because she’d married Beau Simpson a decade ago, the rear admiral in charge of the Top Gun program.

Harm had been her mentor when she was coming up through JAG. He’s walked her down the aisle when she had married Beau at sunset in Cape Rey. Mac remembers she’d been a ferocious little thing, tenacious and fierce in the face of adversity. She packed a hell of a punch in the court room. Mac should know, she’d run up against her a couple of times since taking the promotion in San Diego.

“She’s as good as you.” Mac had told Harm over dinner one night. “And just as infuriating.”

“No.” Harm had responded, sipping from his beer bottle. “She’s better.”

It was Ally that had urged Harm to rejoin the Navy, her and Beau. Mac couldn’t see how unhappy he was at the time, she hadn’t understood it, not really. She remembers the day he’d come home from the airfield, eyes bright with exhilaration. He’d been out flying again with Beau, the two of them were like boys with toys once they got up in the sky. Testing boundaries, playing wargames, showing off. He always ended up at their home afterwards, talking cases over dinner with Ally or swapping war stories with Beau. He would come home with a smile on his face, smelling of cigar smoke, tasting of whiskey.

“I’m re-enlisting.” He’s told her that night after he stepped out of the shower. “It’s a different commission from JAG, it won’t mess up our agreement.”

He was wrong, it had been the end of everything. The posting that Beau had offered him meant he was away on aircraft carriers for six months out of the year, flying jets and sailing ships, the two things he loved most in the world.

Mac had hated him for that, she hated Beau and Ally for giving him that option because now she was the one left behind. The lonely one, the sad one.

It had lasted one deployment.

By the time the next one came up, it was over.   

It was a way of punishing him at the time, she’d expected him to resign his commission, come back with his tail between his legs, but he hadn’t. He’d packed a bag instead and gone to stay with Ally and Beau before shipping out to the USS Allegiance, she hadn’t seen him since. She’d heard stories over the years from mutual friends, places he’d been, women he was seeing. He’d become the Harm she used to know, the one without ties or commitments.

She had always believed they would find their way back to each other. Nine years and thousands of miles later, it’s finally happening on a rainy day in Washington DC.

She doesn’t realise how wrong she is, not until she sees you. You’re hurrying towards him, gesturing with your hands, your voice full of apology. He smiles then, and it’s that smile that completely obliterates her. She’s never seen him smile like that, not in all the years she’s known him.

You’re nothing special, not really. She’d call you pretty as opposed to beautiful, a step down from the women he usually covets. You aren’t military, she can tell from your walk, but you carry, she can see it in the way your coat drapes. Law enforcement then, she assumes. Most likely NCIS.

Strong women, she recalls. That’s what Harm’s attracted to, strong capable women.

It’s when he kisses you, she knows that it’s real. When he cradles your face between his large hands, there’s such tenderness in his expression. He looks at you as if you’re the most precious thing in the world and her heart just breaks. He’s loved before, she realises in that moment but he’s never been in love, not until you.

Her eyes start to sting because for all these years she’s clung to this hope, this stupid ridiculous dream that the two of them were meant for each other. She’d imagined that they’d bump into one another, their eyes would lock and it would be like it was back then. Nights filled with fire and passion, their days adventure and laughter.

That life, it isn’t a reality anymore.

It’s clear that Harm’s moved on and it’s time that Mac does too.

Everyone has a case that gets to them, one that claws it’s way into your thoughts, keeps you up at night. Harm’s had a few of them over the years, he knows what it’s like to lose yourself, become obsessed, which is why he recognises the behaviour in you.

You’ve barely been home over the past couple of days and when you are, you’re irritable, distracted. You pick at your food before excusing yourself so you can dig through the boxes in the garage, the ones the two of you haven’t managed to unpack yet. He tries to help but you shoo him away. You need space, he guesses and for the first time in the history of your relationship he goes to bed without you.

It's a couple of hours later that he wakes up, he reaches for you only to find you’re not there. The sheets are cold and there’s no indentation in your pillow. He checks the time on his phone.

3:45am.

You haven’t been to bed yet.

He finds you at your desk in the lounge, your head in your hands as you study the dog-eared notebook in front of you, the one with the faded ink and messy handwriting.

“Savanna.” He says quietly, his large hands coming to rest on your shoulders. His thumbs chase over the nape of your neck, massaging the space where you hold all your tension.  “Sweetheart, come to bed.”

“I can’t, I’ve got to get through these notes.” You mutter, your fingertips massaging your temples.

“How many times have you re-read the same page?” He asks you, his lips brushing over the back of your head.

Your silence speaks volumes. He sighs as he crouches down in front of your chair, altering the trajectory until the two of you are face to face. You won’t meet his eyes, your head is tilted away, your jaw clenched. He can sense there’s something going on underneath the surface, something you’re not telling him. It prickles at you like a barb scratching at your skin

“Talk to me.” He says quietly, using his fingertips to guide your gaze back to his. “What is it about this case that’s keeping you up?”

He can see the exhaustion in your features, the dark circles, the red rimmed eyes. Your complexion is stark, pale. It’s been a long time since he’s seen you like this, not since the shooting back in LA.

“I was the lead on this one, ten years ago.” You tell him, your palm coming to rest flat upon the notepad. “It was my first assignment after the separation, Robbie was fighting the divorce, everything was messy…”

“You’re worried you missed something.” He says knowingly.

“I didn’t give it my full attention.” You admit, toying with the sleeve of your sweater. “I thought she’d deserted, I didn’t think we’d find her in an unmarked grave almost a decade later.”

You haven’t given him the details of the case not until now but he’s seen flickers of it on the news. A mass grave found in a contractor’s yard, six women including a naval officer in various stages of decomp.

“Her sister works for the Cold Case Unit in the basement, her reaction when Nick told her…” You trail off, your lips pursing together grimly. “I don’t blame her for giving it to me with both barrels.”

“She’s grieving.” He says softly, his forehead coming to rest upon yours. “Sometimes as investigators we don’t have the experience, the knowledge to make the pieces fit.”

“I just want to make it right.” You whisper.

He understands that drive, he’d had it after Diane had murdered. He hadn’t been there when she’d needed it and it made him feel culpable. He had run himself into the ground on that case, he couldn’t see what was right in front of him until years later when he’d finally confronted her killer.

“You can’t do that if you can’t function.” He reminds you before he gently tugs you to your feet. “You need to rest, get some sleep.”

“Just a couple hours.” You concede, his fingers entwining with yours as he leads you towards the bedroom.

“Uh huh.” He says non-committedly as he draws back the covers for you.

Harm has no intention of setting the alarm. You’ll sleep for as long as you need to. You’ll be spitting mad when you do wake up but in this case it’s better to ask for forgiveness instead of permission. He doesn’t want you out there, hunting down a killer if you aren’t at your best.

He climbs into bed alongside of you, gathering you up in his arms and you tuck yourself against him. Already he can feel you settling, the tension slipping from your body. His lips brush over your forehead as he whispers.

“Goodnight sweetheart.”

Harm’s used to your phone ringing in the middle of the night, it’s one of the concessions that come with your job as an NCIS Special Agent. He doesn’t begrudge you for it, it’s a part of your life the same way the deployments are a part of his.

It doesn’t matter what time it is, Harm always gets up with you. There’s a camaraderie in it, the way he sees it the two of you are a team and it’s his job to support you, morning, noon and night. He usually has a cup of coffee to go ready by the front door, along with your car keys and a snack for the road. It’s his way of making sure you’re fully prepared for whatever you walk into, that you come back to him in one piece.

Tonight though, the phone call is different. He can tell from your reaction. Instead of slipping from the sheets and talking to dispatch, you’re gripping the device so tightly that your knuckles turn white. Your timbre is agitated, harsh, your sentences clipped.

It takes Harm a second to realise who you’re talking to. There’s only one person you reserve that tone for and that’s your ex-husband Robbie. The man who calls you when he’s town because he still wants to fuck you.

You’ve been with Harm for almost four years now and Robbie still can’t get it through his head that you’re not interested. It doesn’t matter that you’ve put down roots in Washington because that’s where Harm is based, as far as Robbie’s concerned you’re still fair game.

He’d told Harm as much when they’d run into each other in the Navy Yard a couple of days ago.  

“She may be sleeping with you.” He’d said, using his thumb to hook the gold chain around his neck and show Harm the wedding ring he still wears. “But she married me.”

He’d wanted to wipe the smug smirk right off the bastard’s face.

The fact that Robbie still carries the ring around that bothers Harm. You think he does it just to piss you off but Harm knows that Robbie still has feelings for you.

He’d fought you every step of the way with the divorce, begging for your forgiveness but you were resolute. There’s some things you can’t forget and discovering you’d caught an STI from your husband was one of them.

“He’s at the hospital.” You inform Harm, tugging on your robe over the dark blue NAVY t-shirt you’re wearing, the one from his days at the academy.  “He was injured in a training accident. He wants me to go down there.”

Harm bites his tongue because he knows what this is, Robbie’s way of trying to force his way back into your life. Harm had told him that you were settling down, that you’d bought a house together and this was his response to the news.

It’s easy to believe your ex may still be in love with you if she’s bouncing around from city to city, even if she is in the company of another man. It’s much harder when she’s moving in with him, and talking about getting a dog.

“What are we doing here?” Harm asks as he climbs out of the bed and stands before you.

His large, warm palms come to rest upon rest upon your shoulders as he looks into your eyes. He can’t read the expression on your face, he can’t tell what it is you need from him. Your hands come to rest on his hips as you lean in close.

“I’m not going.” You say firmly. “It’s just another way of trying to control me.”

The thing is Robbie has done this before, a couple of times. It’s always a bad case, a minor injury, a loss, anything he can think of to garner your sympathy. It always ends the same way, him telling you that he can’t live without you before he tries to get you into bed.

“Yea.” Harm says simply, cradling your face between his hands. “It is.”

Harm kinda gets it. It’s the desperate act of a desperate man, one who is finally starting to understand that you’re moving on without him. Harm knows what it’s like to be loved by you, how every kiss makes it feel like the sun is shining, every touch a gift. Robbie, he squandered your affection but Harm, he appreciates it, treasures it.

“You should go back to bed.” You say softly as his thumb chases over the apple of your cheek. “I’m too pissed off to sleep right now. I’m going to go downstairs, make some nighttime tea and try to forget he even called.”

“Or we could both get back into bed.” Harm suggests, his lips brushing over yours as he guides you back towards the mattress. “And I can help you forget all about him.”

Your robe slips from your shoulders, leaving you clad in his shirt and it does something to Harm. He would never try to possess you, you’re a woman in your own right but seeing you wear his clothes, knowing that you choose to be a part of his life, it ignites a passion in him, one that plays out over the next couple of hours as he loves you with every single fibre of his being.

You’re fast asleep when your phone chimes again, your face buried into the curve of Harm’s throat, limbs entangled with his. He glances over at the charging station, the text preview glowing in the dark.

He can’t love you Savanna, not the way that I love you.

He’s right, Harm thinks as he holds you close. He loves you better than Robbie ever could.
