Something about how Haymitch continues to drink. That he never ‘fully’ recovers, even though there are plenty of opportunities through and after the series when his access to alcohol is cut off. Something about him perhaps seeing the act as pointless because the damage to his body has been done, but being content with the time he has left.

Something about Haymitch being able to care about people again; allowing himself to care about Katniss and Peeta and not having to fear losing them or anyone else ever again. That he finds a hobby, a constructive and meaningful way to spend his time that not only reminds him of Lenore Dove, but was prompted by the people he has around him. That he finally feels safe enough to open up about and remember everyone who was taken over the years. That he’s able to heal some through this.

Something about how Haymitch’s pain doesn’t go away, but he’s able to find peace with it through these practices and people, and is able to forgive himself and feel forgiven by those he lost.

Haymitch might have never had the opportunity to be Uncle Haymitch to a little Katniss but you better believe he was to her and Peeta's children when the day came

In Catching Fire, Peeta tries to convince Katniss that she's the one who should make it out alive because she's got a whole family waiting for her while he's got nothing. She refuses, says that he's got her and she can't live without him.

One year later, Katniss's family is gone. Prim is dead, her mom has left, Gale isn't someone she can love anymore. Still, there's Peeta. They still have each other, and they still make each other's lives worth living.

I was not an Hayffie shipper since thg so maybe I am a bit biased, but you know what? There is a "better" ship, for me, if you really want to give everyone the best result in some sort of happiness.

Haymitch/Asterid.

And listen, listen. I know. But they both know how to feel to lose your soulmate. They both had unhealty way to cope for years. They both didn't do anything until at least the end of thg, because Panem was... Panem. Then a war, everything else going on.

But.

But.

After everything settle down, after Asterid process her own trauma and guilt etc about losing Prim, and realize that she still have a living chil out there... After Haymitch fulfills Lenore Dove's last wish, after Katniss gives him the geese, after he can feel Lenore Dove forgave him (for what? Like, he lets go his own guilt) and sees her old and happy and ready to find him again the sweet thereafter...

Maybe Asterid can go back in 12, ready to ask Katniss for forgivness - for everything.

Maybe Haymitch will be there. Not involved in their mother-daughter drama, but still there.

Maybe she remember how much Burdrock was Haymitch best friend, how much he never actually gave up on him.

Maybe he remember how much Asterid meant for Burdrock. How their love was so strong that she really followed him to the Seam.

Maybe there will be a time when Haymitch apologise to her for the rock he threw. Maybe Asterid will make a joke about Burdrok knocking down Otto Mellark to save him from the shitshow that was that reaping day, and now look at our children, together and in love.

Maybe they could remember Maysilee together. Maybe, time after time, they will grow close.

And maybe they will find peace togheter. Without forgettin who is not there anymore. With the mutual knowledge that their love is not a flame who will burn for the eternity, but a quiet warm fire in a fireplace in the middle of the winter. One of the first sunny day of spring, the first smile after long time.

Maybe they will be the best grandparents together. After all, Asterid made amends and Haymitch is already an honorary grandfather since he was an honorary second dad to Katniss.

So, listen.

If I have to see Haymitch with someone else, someone I can actually see having a peacefull future with, she will be Asterid.

I just finished sunrise on the reaping and I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS

but my first being, when does the epilogue take place? I was thinking after Mockingjay but it didn't seem to specify (it might've and I need to go back) but I just wanted to better visualize it in my head

late night thoughts: hypothetically if there were more pets in thg…like hamsters….*insert everyone has a traumatic childhood hamster story here* what would each characters hamster story be? Full transparency (from Jersey, spent summers at the shore, and got a got hermit crab once, put it in the fish tank, and quickly learned that they don’t survive in water) and I still feel so bad to this day

Katniss/Prim: Prim begs for the hamster. Katniss is Not happy because hamsters aren't useful, Prim, they're just another mouth to feed, but also she loves Prim and one of the Town kids at school's got a hamster that just had babies so. Prim gets the hamster. the problem is, of course, that Prim also has Buttercup. doesn't take long before the hamster "disappears" (Katniss finds Buttercup chewing on it and quickly hides the evidence before Prim wakes up)

Peeta: Peeta has such a horrible home life and is looking for something, anything, that he can call his own to get him through. so when the kid at school says he's got hamsters and wants to know if he wants one, he doesn't think twice, just hides it in his bag and takes it home. He keeps the hamster hidden in his drawer and sneaks it seeds and some water every day. it all goes south when one of his brothers slams the drawer too hard.

Gale: Gale isn't the one who gets the hamster, it's Rory. Hazelle freaks out and tries to get rid of the hamster, but the idea upsets Rory so much that eventually Gale talks her out of it. They build the hamster an elaborate cage with lots of tunnels and things to climb, it's a project they spend days on, and Posy is in charge of making sure the hamster has enough food and water. the hamster outlives every other one on this list and dies of old age.

Finnick: someone thinks that Finnick needs something to occupy him (which is probably true) and so he ends up with a hamster. Finnick does not want a hamster. Finnick has absolutely no interest in pets or animals, so he immediately tries to pass the hamster off on one of the kids of the other victors. this does not work. he continues to try and get rid of the hamster, and then eventually on a really, really bad day gets so frustrated that he "accidentally" leaves the cage door open. this backfires because it gets stuck in the wall somehow and dies. they then have to take the wall apart to get the hamster out.

Johanna: Johanna does not like hamsters. Johanna ends up getting a hamster as a gift, or at least she thinks she does, because she walks into the house one day and the telltale signs of Blight Meddling (for example, the house is much cleaner) are there, as well as a hamster in a cardboard box on the counter. but Johanna's also not heartless and doesn't want it to die, so she tries to take care of it for a while. she brings it outside and lets it play in the grass because she thinks that's probably good for it, except one day while they're outside before she can do anything, one of Blight's dogs runs over, grabs the hamster up in its mouth, and runs away. Johanna swears off pets after this and will deny it but cries for a couple days over it.

there are many other hamster stories waiting to be unlocked here but i didn't want to make this Too long so i guess we could do like. hamsters part two if people are compelled by this
