For real tho, he struggled with guilt for a while after Nemesis but since then, he's finally been able to own that part of himself. Yes, he's killed Masters, plural. No, he doesn't think he should feel bad about it anymore. (Maybe, he can even allow himself to feel proud of it.) (I played motr and was like oh this is really f'ed up actually!) This is a dark world that doesn't understand diplomacy or mercy. One must play by its rules if there is ever to be widespread change. Ruthlessness isn't a moral failing. He isn't unnecessarily cruel and never has delighted in causing suffering, but he does believe that a measure of violence is necessary in revolution. (I the player know the statistics that ~nonviolent~ revolutions are more likely to be successful longterm, but this is fiction, and my boy deserves to go ape shitt)

rewatch, ep 4x19 "jump the shark"

1) the secret brother reveal! the writers have enough self-awareness about it in the episode title, too, but it's also not totally out of left field. we've seen sam & dean hook up with enough civilians that john sleeping with someone (esp a woman who looks so much like mary) after a hunt make sense. and still cackling over sam's "must have slipped one past the goalie."

2) speaking of sam, we're seeing more shades of "mystery spot" sam for real now. ruthless, pragmatic, using a civilian as bait, he's becoming like the worst of his dad. sam's compassion shines in season 1 - 3, and season 4 is a lot about sam twisting that compassion/morality to be more in control, efficient, & get revenge. (he says drinking demon blood is about being strong enough to exorcise demons, but he also likes feeling power & in control, too, beyond just using his powers to help people.) and then the ghouls, going after the people who killed their dad, get themselves killed for it. revenge ends up destroying those who seek it

3) pretty basic visual storytelling but i do love this shot:

i couldn’t figure out how to make a gif of it, so the basic summary is the camera moves left to right, starting with sam & dean in focus and then moving to adam in focus in the foreground. because sam & deam are stuck in the background and blurred out for the focus on adam’s profile, adam feels like his looming over them. ominous, even before the ghoul reveal. sam & dean are diminished - they still don’t know everything that’s happening - and adam is prominent and highlighted - he knows far more than he’s letting on. a great spooky shot.

Hornet

First impression

Extremely cool lady who personally bullies me by being a scary boss fight.

I remember feeling an incredible sense of momentum about it, though- when I first played Hollow Knight I spent a very long time stuck at the crossroads and made it through the toll gate into crystal peak without ever really understanding where I was going, then dropping to the resting grounds. Actually defeating the false knight and going to Greenpath was a big deal; and then following Hornet through it to the boss fight gave me such a powerful sense of momentum, purpose, here's the plot.

Impression now

both missing and being entertained by back when I thought Hornet was a super difficult boss because now I'm stuck on other bosses and crying about the idea of Radiance when I can't even get to her ;v;

Hornet is... honestly I think she's really interesting for how confidently she presents but how brittle her actual living situation is. Her vulnerability is something the player really has to earn; her loyalty can be made and broken, and when, if you do listen to her, she potentially dies on your behalf... it's a lot.

I think she deserves a nap and an opportunity to not feel personally responsible for everything. Maybe a pretty dress but only if she's into it.

Favorite moment

I always structure my gameplay so as not to kill Herrah before getting the King's Brand, because it's extremely important for me that Hornet gets to say goodbye, and talk to anyone about what this means. Part of it is the emotions of the scene in general, but a close follow-up is this particular poetic line that always haunts me:

Allow me a moment alone before this bedchamber becomes forever a shrine.

It's just such a line, drawing this distinction between a place someone lived and slept, that is suffused with the sense of them as a real person with feelings, and the alternative- as somewhere that is only a shining, idealized memory. It's kind of a perfect statement on the fate of... really, if you go with the "Three Queens" theory that Team Cherry proposed- was kind of the fate of everyone who either loved Hornet, or could have but didn't. Herrah, the White Lady, the Pale King, and Hive Queen Vespa. In the most distant of those number, the Pale King was kind of a person becoming a shrine before Hornet was ever even born; there was never even the chance for them to close that chilling emptiness.

Hornet is a strong, principled fighter, but she was given ideals and paragons instead of people to emotionally relate to.

Idea for a story

SO I don't know if anybody's picked this up yet but in RFR, I actually wrote Hornet out of the story- ironically because I wanted it to be Silksong compatible. (Relatively early in the story, PK gets glimpses of several places- one of them is the caravan from the beginning of Silksong) This may or may not be shooting myself in the foot, but, I have a vivid idea of a sequel of Hornet making it back home and having to deal with everything that happened in her absence.

That, obviously, will depend a lot on Silksong in its time- but I definitely feel like she deserves at least PK consenting to be extremely awkward about it considering their nigh-total absence of a relationship when- in RFR- he's ironically her only surviving caretaker besides his wife.

Unpopular opinion

I'm interested in the potential of Lacenet and I understand people are having fun about it / absolutely don't judge them but just for me personally I'm intrigued by the possibility of like. fucked-up-progressing-towards-something-more-supportive Anthy and Utena vibes. I think both of them have immense amounts of problems rattling around and as invested as I am in the notion of Hornet getting to have a soft gentle break, I'm also really invested in both Hornet and Lace having the right to go absolutely ape shitt

Favorite relationship

I REALLY wanna know more about Herrah's POV in her relationship with her daughter. Give us your secrets, giant terrifying spider woman. There's not even much prototype text with her- they seemingly were planning her to be pretty secretive from very early on.

Honestly also I want to know how close Hornet was to the Midwife, as well.

Favorite headcanon

Hornet is a horrible demigod spider and everybody has to deal with it, including herself, because she was seemingly removed from the weaver culture before she was able to have much to do with it, and her genetic sire was not about to even try to start having something to do with another wyrm, even a half-wyrm, so everything Hornet knows about her own body and health is kitbashed, most of it alone in caves. Some day she's going to encounter an actual doctor and make medical history in several directions at once.

Both of Hornet's parents were kind of horror movie monsters for this setting (which is already pretty spooky by our standards) and the one of them Hornet wanted to relate to couldn't and the one she didn't want to relate to may or may not have contributed more problems.

anon i hope you realize how happy this makes me. and YES. literally the whole 'we're the same' thing is such bullshit like one of them is a hyper-privileged powerful nationalist social darwinist bastard who doesn't give a shit about the weak and the other is a heavily traumatized socially and systematically ostracized deeply caring man whose entire goal is to protect the weak. They are not the same. not to borrow from a vocaloid song but this is literally just the entire way i feel when armstrong says that

they're nothing alike. it's ridiculous. raiden would NEVER follow in his footsteps--just because he has that one line in the ending doesn't mean he's suddenly become an armstrong devotee or something. this has been a theme throughout all the games he's in, the idea of fighting for causes you don't believe in or understand--it's a subset of the free will themes, i mean that's what happened to him as a kid and it's what's been happening to him ever since, always being forced to fight other people's wars. revengeance is him fighting for a cause he believes in, and that cause is absolutely antithetical to armstrong's belief system. people who think otherwise evidently missed the entire point.

and yes his identity thing IS part of the character study but also as i don't know when that will be out i'm happy to talk about it now too (plus after the amount of smiles i've gotten out of interacting with you. you've earned the info)

okay so the thing about raiden is that as i said before a lot of people characterize him as having DID or something along those lines but i highly disagree. i mean for one that's a bullshit hollywood 'mentally ill people are SO SCARY AND DANGEROUS' stereotype and for another thing it just doesn't fit with any of what we've seen. he does, however, absolutely have at least one dissociative disorder, and his identity is heavily fragmented. the thing is it isn't separated into fully distinct identities--it's all still him. you know how people have different 'facets' of themselves for different situations? you behave one way at home, a different way at school, another with your friends--things like that. i think raiden's deal is that, due to the amount of trauma he's been through, the various facets of his identity are far more separated than the average individual's. however, they are all still him. there are no separate identities, just different parts of an unintegrated yet singular identity. point is, even raiden doesn't deny that it's all him. he refers to 'the ripper' as a separate part of himself, but never as a completely distinct entity. so here's my analysis on what the real deal is with raiden's identity issues. (this may not all make sense; i put it best in narrative form, but i'll try to make sure it at least sounds somewhat coherent. bear with me.)

i have identified four 'facets' and there's frequent overlap but they are as follows: jack (child), jack (man desperately trying to live a normal life), raiden (basically the soldier/weapon dichotomy personified), and, of course, jack (the ripper). which is where it all started.

i mean, it only makes sense. if you toss a little kid into a war zone and make him kill people, he's going to try to detach himself from that, because it's fucking horrifying. so we end up with the part of him that doesn't want to do any of this repressed because he doesn't have a choice. all the brainwashing and manipulation have forcefully created this new persona, and that's the only part of him that can cope with anything that's happening. so jack, the little kid who's scared and alone, is forcibly pushed aside, repressed so he isn't being constantly tormented by the things solidus is making him do.

then after the war's over, when he starts really realizing how fucked up all of that was, he starts to feel that self-loathing and fear. becomes horrified with himself. he has to start from scratch--has to be someone 'normal.' (this is the term i use because i believe this is how he thinks of it. do not take it to mean anything else.) so this time, the part of him created to deal with the horrors of war is what's shoved aside in favor of a new persona, a jack who can fit in with everyone else, who can view himself as a person instead of a monster. i think the memories of the war went along with it--a clean slate, basically. a version of himself he doesn't completely despise.

and that's what we get for a while until he winds up fighting again, at which point we get the 'soldier' persona. willing to fight, but not ENJOYING it. he doesn't clearly remember his past at this point, but he still pushes away all his emotions ('my personal feelings have no place in a mission'). although he isn't called raiden yet, this is what i consider the 'raiden' facet--the quintessential 'good soldier'... and to the patriots, a perfect weapon.

and then mgs2 happens and shit gets fucked. suddenly he knows. suddenly he's understanding the nightmares, the terrifying intrusive thoughts, all of the things that he's been fighting so hard to suppress all this time--with the 'perfect soldier' behavior, detached yet still fully capable, with the 'normal' man he tries to be. so many of the walls he's built to contain 'the ripper' crumble, and now he can see it. the part of himself he's been running from for so long, the part that's still trapped in the war, the part solidus forced into being. the part of himself he hates most and is most afraid of, because it's the part of himself that wants to fight. that loves it. everything he tries so hard to not be.

so now he's aware and actively working to suppress the unwanted sides of himself again, which is obviously just not good for his mental health... and he spirals.

then in revengeance he just... stops trying. monsoon and sam push him to the breaking point and he reaches the conclusion that 'the ripper' is who he is. is the real part of him, when the truth is that every part is real. the point is, he stops fighting it. he embraces it, all the terrifying emotions and urges he's been suppressing for over two decades now. his identity is still fragmented, but he's not trying to hold any of it back anymore. (which i think is a good thing.)

now i'll back my claims up with some examples. different games more clearly showcase different facets--mgs2 mostly displays the 'normal' and 'soldier' personas, with a little bit of the child mixed in there too. mgs4 is a mix of the soldier and the child, although the former takes up the majority of the time. and revengeance, of course, is a fairly even mix of the 'soldier' and 'ripper' facets. like i said, examples.

mgs2. i think this one is pretty obvious. he's in a mix of modes for most of the game, although 'normal' tends to be more obvious. he hasn't yet undergone the horrific dehumanization in his future, after all. he's still largely thinking of himself as a human being, not a weapon. the child side isn't super evident, but some examples of where i think it shines through are lines like 'i feel like some kind of legendary mercenary' and of course, the infamous 'we've managed to avoid drowning!' like i've said before, he didn't get the chance to mentally and emotionally develop the same way as the average individual, and i think sometimes that can be seen in this game, largely in the moments where he seems somewhat unreasonably proud of himself. i mean, come on. 'i feel like some kind of legendary mercenary' is adorable. he's just having a good time! and let's face it, the nerd-node exchange and the little 'oh.' at the end of it--he sounds so disappointed. i love his little moments like that. it's a nice experience before the hell on earth that is the next game.

because mgs4 really is hell on earth in terms of what we see of raiden's personality. after all the dehumanization and horror he's experienced, he's cast aside the 'normal' facet entirely. 'i am raiden. jack is no more.' to him, that part of himself is dead. in his mind, all that's left is the perfect soldier and weapon that's been demanded of him for so long. and that one is painfully obvious--look at the way he treats himself, like he's purely disposable. part of this is because of the other mental health issues he's dealing with at the time, but the dehumanizing tactics of the patriots definitely got to him.

the child jack also shows up a fair bit in this game, but the appearances are very different. one key example is the scene on the nomad before shadow moses island--i see a lot of people calling that pathetic, but honestly, it's nothing of the sort. once snake denies him what he sees as his purpose, he panics, and what i see there is the echoes of the past more than anything else. a terrified little kid, clinging to snake's leg as if that can keep him from leaving, begging not to be left alone. it breaks my heart. another moment i see it is in the sudden shift from being ready and willing to die at the end of the game to pure terror. in revengeance, being hurt the way he is in that scene provoked 'the ripper', but that's not an option at this point, and what we get instead is a 180 degree turn from quiet confidence and lack of care for his own life to nothing but pain and fear. these kinds of shifts are so abrupt and so unusual for him as we've seen him so far that it draws my attention--it wasn't until mgs4 that this theory started forming, just because of these scenes.

aaaaaaaaaand revengeance just cemented it. i don't think i really have to explain my thoughts on this one. it's pretty obvious.

my friend you’ll have to forgive me because the only season i remember the best is the first one because dexter S1 was fiVE STAR television and it really impacted me and i know i watched a couple more but my brain went kaput. so....take into account that all of these have to do with what i remember from S1 dexter when everyone was still alive and having a blast.

RUST: i loved your meme reply and these two absolutely need a verse where they work together. rustin is the complete opposite of dexter on how he interacts with the world around him; while dex makes an effort to fit in and display tenderness, rust is nothing but sharp edges. he is blunt and painfully honest and i’m not sure if he’d get weird vibes from dexter ( like a much softer doakes ) or if he’d just see a man who is as alien as him but still tries to make others comfortable. that little freak out about the blood? 100% rust would just offer him a glass of water and go “you should quit”.

that’s not to say cohle doesn’t have his fair share of problems too. not sure if you’re into this idea ( btw feel free to delete / edit any of these ideas because what even is plotting ) but maybe they do have a weird unspoken tension in which they’re trying to figure out just what is off about each other while, at the exact same time, valuing their respective skills and all the work they do in order to catch killers. rustin has on several occasions used violence against suspects and even applauded marty for killing one of them. not entirely sure how he’d feel about dexter’s more....unethical tendencies. either way, would love to see 2 angrii sweaty boys talking it out.

MEMPHIS: probably someone who deserves to be in dexter’s little blood collection box. but alas, this bastard won’t die. mr. memphis would be a big fan of his work but he wouldn’t like that there’s still somewhat of a moral compass to what dexter does. you know that meme “are you tired of being nice? don’t you just want to go ape shitt” that’s memphis. he wants dexter’s soul, he’ll give him anything he wants and if he can gently guide him into become a worse person, then he will and he’ll have a good time doing so.

it could also be interesting if, at some point in his life, dexter did kill mr. memphis ( he’s done plenty of horrible things, he had it coming ). the years pass and then, one day, when he’s having a drink or driving around or just at the supermarket, mr. memphis shows up, same suit, same age, same burnt hand and pats him on the back like they were old friends. tells dexter he missed him! idk, we can get supernatural with it or just stick with the “weird guy who keeps talking about killing” scenario, either way is fine x

HANNIBAL: aaaa these two can interact in many ways. does dexter need some psychological evaluation? maybe someone recommends hannibal. maybe dexter doesn’t open up fully but his doctor seems patient and, although he advises some unethical exercises, he’s genuinely trying to get dexter to open up. maybe at some point they do make a little progress or dexter lets something genuine out. maybe one day, while at work, dexter finds something about the crime scene that references something NO ONE should know or something he only said in lecter’s office. maybe next time they meet for therapy, it’s different. they’re sizing each other up. they’re trying to find out how much the other knows. and if hannibal ever finds out that dexter’s pathology is a tiny bit similar to his, he’ll be excited to have someone to play games with.

or maybe dexter, for some reason or another, gets to visit hannibal while he’s incarcerated. and lecter can smell the sweat and plastic and cleaning products on him and he can tell what he really is. and, in exchange for advice on work related things, hannibal gets to live out his violent tendencies through dexter, asking him details on his hobby, how it makes him feel...you know. weirdo shit. many thoughts, up to anything honestly.

B.PHILLIP: i always have a harder time coming up with interesting scenarios for this one. he has more or less of the same objectives as mr. memphis but he’s much more interested in getting young women to join his coven. it could be that there’s some killings connected to the occult happened around the area. maybe phillip is a suspect, like, he does look very cult leader-ish. maybe he will only speak to dexter and say some creepy things in old english. reach out to hold his hand with his dirty ones. claim that he was there with him when he was born, not the first time, but the second time. he’s creepy, he will creep, but i’m not sure how he would be able to relate to mr. morgan beyond making him deeply uncomfortable. 

WOODY: i think dexter would only need to spend half a second with woody to realise how painfully insecure he is. he essentially works for a mob boss who belittles him, he doesn’t appreciate anyone remotely connected with law enforcement and he definitively doesn’t appreciate being around anyone who is clearly smarter than him. but woody is also very sad about it all...no one remembers his real name, no one gives him the respect he deserves so he prefers to strike fear into the hearts of others...but any kind gesture is enough to make him crumble. not that any of this is of any help to dexter....i think he’d see woody as someone worth putting on the slab. he’s a bit of a mobster, people have died because of him....i’m a bit stuck on how these two would work on the long run but yeah. big stronk angrii man will beat dexter up but only because he feels very small next to him.
