STRAY KIDS: NO EASY
Stray Kids had their comeback today with their album, No Easy, and title track Thunderous. It’s doing big numbers already, so congratulations to these guys. It was a surprising listen actually.
1) Title Track: Thunderous. This is straight up God’s Menu 2.0 x BTS’s Not Today but not as good as either. I really like how it starts, Changbin should start all their songs because he’s pretty much a guarantee I won’t turn it off, but that chorus bro. It’s not a good chorus. It’s weak and structureless, instead relying on this trend to throw words for the tiktok crowd. That’s the impression I get. This is still a fun song and it would be fun at a concert. It reminds me of the Blackpink-Formula: just words set to punchy music with the sole purpose of creating an MV to pose and look hot in.
2) Changbin is hard carrying this group in terms of performance. This album made that really so obvious. They are a rap heavy group on main and they’re extremely lucky to have him. The first 4 songs come across as The Changbin Show. I’m not mad about it. I don’t understand why he’s so musically important and prominent to them but he doesn’t get as much attention at any other times. Maybe he prefers it that way, I don’t know.
3) Jisung. Okay so he co-composed and wrote lyrics for Secret Secret? And Gone Away? And Thunderous, Domino, Ssick, Mixtape....He will make bank with this album. Good for him. Secret Secret sounds like a sequel to Sunshine and Changbin’s ‘EX’. He has a big talent for slow jams like this with soaring choruses, I would call this type of style his speciality. I hope he has the chance to do more things like this, that big softie. I always knew this about Jisung. He’s so good at hiding it but I see right through you mate.
4) Red Light is excellent. Elegantly Slutty. This is a pole dance song, ever I heard one. Not that I would know about that life but there’s no shame in it....should you be so inclined. Haha. How do I get out of this conversation.....Anyways, I just do not understand how they have the capabilities to do a song like this but then release things like Thunderous and Wolfgang. I question if this is the same group because Red Light has a lot of restraint and minimalism to it, which makes the ChanJin performance the primary focus. You shouldn’t be sorry that you’re dirty Chan, if anything, please lean into it bro because it suits you.
5) The Sub-Units did a really great job. I’m glad they did that, it made for interesting listening and gave everyone a project. I didn’t watch much leading to this album and I’m pleasantly surprised how they weren’t all shitty haha. The only problem is, apart from Red Light, I’m not sure I’d reach for any of them. I’m almost obsessed with that song because it’s been so hard to move past it.
6) Hyunjin. Since when did he learn how to serve actual good vocals? Since when? All men do is lie. I knew he would lie to me. I knew it. I bet he and Chan will lie about that song being about waiting at the traffic lights. You can’t even drive, don’t be telling fibs and fables.
7) My favourite tracks: Red Light | Secret, Secret | Sorry I Love You (predominantly for Changbin’s blame verse | Domino | Star Lost (it’s cute, it reminds me of something Young K might have written when he’s in a good mood)
8) Overall, I like the album. It’s a good solid album with an understandable but irrelevant title track which does not represent the album vibe at all. The most ironic and surprising thing about No Easy is that it’s the slower, less noisy songs that really stand out and show their maturity and talent. It’s really amusing that they’re known for party noise. I wonder if they’re ever planning to change their name as they mature but then again, The Beach Boys and Spice Girls are legendary so hey, maybe we can have Kids.
