Heaptober 2022!! Details under the cut

Welcome to the second ever heaptober!! Its one of those events where you can make anything - moodboards, fic, fanart, pottery, poetry, do whatever you want. As long as it fits the promt well enough that you can explain it then you're all good.

Feel free to mix and match prompts!! There's no pressure to do every day or even most days, and if you want to combine some then thats totally your decision :]

Please tag your posts with "#septimus heap" "#heaptober 2022" and "heaptober" so that I can find them and reblog them here (and on my main!!) there's no real limit to how late you can post after the event ends but I'll probably stop checking the heaptober tag after a week or so. Images without an ID might not get reblogged so please describe your images. DM me here or on my main (@septimus-heap) and I'll either describe it for you or link you to a discord that will do that

That's all I think? I don't know if anyone wanted to be tagged so I'm only going to tag @septimusheapheadcanons in hopes of attention since this was posted so late but anyway!! I hope people actually participate in this and I hope anyone who does enjoys it :]

There is something about Ouroboroi in the Septimus Heap books, no? Septimus' dragon ring, Tod's intertwining snakes - and the Marsh Python in book 1.

I was always fascinated by the enormous snake reaching all the way around Keeper's Cottage. Despite the fact that it's described like just another one of those idle curiosities that dot the books, it almost feels like a protective circle around the characters. After all, the snake is only there because it got caught by the Big Freeze, and as soon as the ice melts, DomDaniel can come after them.

I don't know why I was convinced that it's another purple python. I reread the scene now; it's not. But I kind of like the association with Marcia - as if, even once she gets captured, she's somehow protecting Jenna and the boys.

Todays prompt! ExtraOrdinary wizard! So I wanted to do Marcia doing something Extraordinary, so it’s the raising of the curtain! As well as I remember it from the book at least. Haven’t sketched out anything for tomorrow yet but will do v soon

Summary (to be read directly after title): Probably. The Witch whose curse traps Marcia is never actually described/seen onscreen. In any case, breaking the curse likely has nothing to do with recognizing inner beauty, because neither Jenna nor Marcia are a cruel prince needing to be taught a lesson.

Heaptober Day 13: Ghosts. An extension of one of my first ever pieces, The Queen's Ghosts

John Greenfield was proud to say that he was one of the Queen’s Ghosts. He was not necessarily one of the most important people on it, no, that position belonged to many more educated people who had led more interesting lives. He was a nobody, with a long gone sister and parents too full of grief to care anymore. But he was certainly one of the most well traveled, which was indeed the whole point, so he was one of the most important ghosts in the Queen’s Ghosts.  During life, John had been a repairman. He was a good one, too. So he had been called on many times, in many places. He had been nearly everywhere in the castle and the port, and to plenty of the neighboring villages. He even went out to the White Witch's cottage once, when Old Ms. Winifred had needed a new stovepipe put in. So John was very useful, and he was very proud of this. Lately, he had taken up messenger duty, because the gossip of the young ones was just so interesting to him, and he was listening anyway, so he may as well help the young princess out and summon her brother from time to time.  Once, he got Septimus when Princess Jenna hadn’t asked, but when he knew she needed support. John was very proud of that one. He may have been a semi-useful nobody in his life with no family to speak of, but he was a valuable protector in his death, caring for the young ones in every generation for 400 years. Doing what he wished he had been able to do for his sister.

Gee, I wonder why Sep is peculiar about his shoes.

He was wearing the ceremonial sentry uniform, a rather silly design made from thin cotton, a red and white striped tunic with purple frills around the sleeves. He also wore a large floppy yellow hat, white tights and bright yellow boots, and in his left hand, which was bare and blue with cold, he held a heavy pikestaff.

Magyk, chapter 4

(…) on his feet, instead of his lost - and much loved - brown boots, he wore the strange and pointy-toed shoes that were fashionable and made him feel very foolish. Septimus had actually cut the ends off each point because he had kept tripping over them, but it did not exactly improve the shoes' appearance and made his toes cold.

Septimus wore, as usual, his only pair of brown leather boots. Septimus liked his boots, and although Marcia often offered to get some new ones made for him in a nice emerald python skin to match his green apprentice robes, he always refused.

Flyte, chapter 1

Tod saw a solid, well-worn pair of brown boots appear through the hole in the ceiling. Grazing the top of the boots was a purple robe edged in a shimmering purple silk ribbon. Remembering that only the ExtraOrdinary Wizard wore purple, Tod gazed in awe as the young man with purple ribbons hanging from his sleeves slowly rotated down.

Heaptober Day 4: Circus

I give you the Extraordinary Madame Marcia on the trapeze, from @lovelyisadora's Circus AU. The image of Marcia as an acrobat hasn't left my mind since I read that post, so I decided to take this opportunity to draw her.

This is pretty much my first serious attempt to use digital drawing methods? I've tried it before (and have some experience with the programs) but always either lacked the necessary hardware or software to make it work out. This is probably part of why I decided that figuring out proper shading techniques was too difficult, and instead got all my textures from Google Images and cut them out like some kind of dress up paper doll. Either way, I'm very happy with the result, so I might try to do more!

I only belatedly realized that digital was even an option (since my roommate had lent me his drawing tablet). So there's a watercolor version of this too:

Incomplete List of Fairy Tale Motifs

in the Septimus Heap books

Snow White: Red as a Princess' tunic, black as a Princess' hair, white as Jenna's fandom interpretation is not. Seven sons/seven dwarves; a Hunter; and a Sorceress as a stepmother. ("Mirror, mirror on the wall, make me 8.2 percent thinner")

Snow White, parte the seconde: The whole motif gets repeated during Physik, when Esmeralda (who specifically looks just like Jenna) has to hide in a cottage somewhere to escape the man the evil Queen is sending after her. Plus Etheldredda gets introduced using a magyk mirror for evil.

Sleeping Beauty: Syrah Syarah, though it feels like the Dragon Boat also gets some of those characteristics. And it's been forever since I've read Darke, but the whole Quarantine and Safety Curtain has something of the bramble hedge and sleeping spell, no?

Red Riding Hood: Red cloak? check. Forest full of wolve(rine)s? check. Family members to visit there? check. Combination thereof? …uh…

Cinderella: "'But what about Aunt Mitza?' 'What about her? I've caught tons of fish. I'm going to cook it - as usual. She's going to eat it - as usual.'" And yes, that makes Ferdie the Fairy Godmother, even if the dress she sews is very much not for Tod.

Rapunzel: Or is it more Maid Maleen? On the one hand, Lucy gets locked in a tower for wanting to marry the wrong boy and spends some time working as a kitchen maid. On the other hand she does have very long braids, and she reunites with Simon out in the Badlands. To my delight that isn't where her association with towers ends: there's always her chimney-building enterprise.

It's been a hot second since I read most of the Sep Heap books, so I'm bound to have missed a few - add them on if you can think of anything?

What I've noticed writing this out is that there is a distinct lack of princes. Simon does sort of take the role of prince to Lucy's Rapunzel, but she very much just runs off on her own and fights her way back to him. And it very specifically does not have women competing with each other in the typical fairy tale sense - Marcia has no motivation to usurp Jenna, since she doesn't need a husband or a throne to have power. Etheldredda wants Esmeralda dead not because she's jealous of her looks, but because she won't need or want an heir if she'll stay on the throne forever.
