Before I’d been thinking that Heartbeeps would be an interesting movie to remake, because there’s so much that’s interesting and beautiful in the premise and designs, but on a second watch I’m starting to wonder if the existing footage could be recut into a stronger movie, since so many of its problems seem to be rooted in the editing.

The Crimebuster’s part seems to have been beefed up after the fact (it has the intro and outro despite being the villain of the piece, most of its screentime is just it cruising around the woods alone with voiceover, and none of the human characters even mention that it escaped from the factory too), and a lot scenes are cut into or out of at odd moments leaving one to wonder what exactly might be on the cutting room floor (there’s no transition between the woods and the town except for voiceover saying “it’s so lucky we came across this small town,” Charlie asks Max what another character meant when he said he and Max “went way back” when I'm pretty sure the film cut didn't include a scene of the character saying that).

Plus, the junkyard couple defeating Crimebuster when it narratively would have been more satisfying for our heroes to do it, and the clumsy exposition scene bridging the tragic apparent death with the “and they all lived happily ever after” without sufficient explanation of what happened or why—were these story issues inherent in the original script, or did that come about in the editing room? I’d love to know “what could have been,” but unfortunately it’s not the kind of movie that’s likely to get any kind of retrospective.

Though apparently someone’s selling the script on Ebay for $815 if anyone’s more curious than I 😂 (Listing photos seem to confirm that the original opening scene was of Val being taken through the warehouse, rather than Crimebuster's introduction.)

Is this movie secretly the descent of luck story for Russell Casse in Independence Day? Perhaps the story of a distant Killbot relative striking out on its own trying to get a career started for itself? In the famous words of a meme, why not both?

Heartbeeps (1981)

What a weird thing to just now discover: an Andy Kaufman-starring comedy about two robots falling in love and going on the run. I never even knew it existed until today.

Now, I must stress, this is not a good film at all: awful dialogue, slow pacing and practically no story at the center of it. The machines inexplicably behave like people, when there is no reason for them to do so, and the people characters may as well be machines. The movie fails entirely at making you care for any of them or buy into any of the nonsense taking place. But it's also one of the quirkiest films you'll get to see, with striking visuals all the way through, and technical excellence in all the other departments.

If I was to try sum it up in words, I guess I would have to say it was a cobbled-together hodgepodge of Tron, Sleeper, Short Circuit, A.I. and Batman Returns, filmed by Wes Anderson from a script by an 11-year-old written on a Speak N Spell.

So no, it's not a good film, but it is sort of charming, in an 80s time capsule kind of way, and a pretty thing for your eyes to look at the once.
