Tumblr Rules for Redditors
Hello, fellow redditors! Many people are trying to tell you rules about how to Tumblr properly. Many of them are wrong, or assholes, or both. I am also an asshole but I’m going to not be one for a minute to give you some advice:
“Reblog this or you’re a bad person” and any variation on that is a violation of intergalactic law. Don’t do it. Also, refuse to comply if someone else does it.
Generally, people can see what you reblog, but cannot see what you ‘like’. A like may seem like an upvote, but it is much less significant than one, since it doesn’t affect visibility in the slightest. A like will be visible both to the OP of the thread, and to the person whose reblog you put the like on. Like promiscuously! It feels good to get likes and there’s no downside. (Unless you are a space alien AKA influencer.)
Tumblr nominally has the ability to browse global tags (e.g. seeing the entire site’s posts and reblogs tagged #superwholock or #reddit exodus) and to search the site for things. No one uses them and they don’t really work.
You are probably less surprised by this than denizens of literally any other website on the internet, but there’s no algorithm here. Chronological order only. (If you’re using the search or global tags, they might have an algorithm, but if they do, it doesn’t work. We don’t know because we don’t use them.)
Anyone can have absolutely any conversation in the notes of your post that they like. This is how the website works. You are allowed to complain about it, but don’t expect anyone to humor you.
Many people have ‘DNI’ lists in their blog descriptions. This means ‘do not interact’ and indicates that they don’t want you to message them, reblog from them, reblog any posts they are OP of, or even, sometimes, ‘like’ their posts. It is good manners to respect these, if you know they exist, but in normal use you probably won’t look at blog descriptions very often so it is entirely okay to violate them by accident. (When the lists get very long, it becomes impractical to check whether you violate them. Generally, just skip it. You probably don’t want to interact with those people anyway.)
Notes on posts you start will go to you no matter how many intervening hops there are on the reblog chain. If you get a post with an enormous amount of notes, this can get overwhelming. Whatever the current incarnation of Xkit (basically RES for Tumblr except we’ve switched names and maintainers seven times) is, will have a setting to deal with this. If that’s insufficient, the suggested course of action is to reblog your OP to your own blog so that you have a copy for posterity’s sake, and then delete the OP. This silences the notes.
If you and another user both follow each other, you are ‘mutuals’. This makes it much easier to have conversations with each other, which is ordinarily sort of hard since everything is purely chronological. Frequently your mutuals are your friends; if not yet true, they may become your friends.
When you reblog things, you can write words both in the word part and in the tags, Modern tumblr norms are to write long rambling tags in full sentences rather than put words in the main body. Do not that only the first four tags in the list can be searched on. Unlike some other norms, violating this one and putting your response in the body of the reblog is not particularly rude. The worst it does is make a reblog chain long. Probably don’t reblog things and just say “This.”, though.
If you want to search your blog, consider Siikr. Don’t overuse it, it’s one guy’s project.
Be verbose! This ain’t Twitter, no character limit. (Not even the really large character limit of a reddit comment.) Write a 3000-word story in a single reblog if you want, that sounds awesome. Use ‘read more’ if you do, though. Posts can be very long, one of our oldest memes is about this.
Infinite scroll is the default, but you can turn it off. Actually, check all the settings, many of them will improve your experience.
Everybody be excellent to each other!

IMPORTANT PSA TO THOSE NEW TO TUMBLR OR REALLY ANYONE ON THIS SITE IN GENERAL:
IT IS OK TO REBLOG SPAM AND LIKE SOMEONE'S CONTENT ON THEIR BLOG NO ONE HERE IS GOING TO BE WEIRDED OUT, IN FACT IT IS ENCOURAGED THIS IDEA THAT SOCIALIZATION = BAD IS A TOXIC CAPITALISTIC TOOL DESIGNED BY HELLSITES LIKE TWITTER TO LEACH MONEY AND GOODWILL FROM YOUR BODY. I honest to god have no idea why "ratioing" on twitter is bad, like the act of engagement is considered a bad thing as if twitter were trying to encourage your toxic rage. oh wait that is exactly what twitter is doing. Twitter's entire business model is to encourage you to get outraged and to profit off of your rage induced engagement.
TUMBLR. DOES. NOT. HAVE. RATIOS. REBLOGGING IS A GOOD THING HERE. NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR THAT, AND HONESTLY MY MEMORY IS SO CRAP I FORGET Y'ALL RESPOND TO MY STUFF ANYWAYS.
All you need to do is change your profile pic and post something, and congratulations you now have a valid Tumblr citizenship. also to you twitter users: you can't cancel people on tumblr. this is a website full of eccentric weirdos. We are so far away from the mainstream that tumblr struggles to find advertisers for this site. At one point tumblr was very toxic, and the toxic tumblr people would eventually move to twitter during the porn ban. Twitter + the pandemic simply gave the toxic weirdos mainstream power to ruin people's lives. politely fuck off with your toxic crap, no one here is afraid to call you out on your obvious bullshit like on twitter. We don't have anything to hide here and even if we did your impact means NOTHING here. If you try to make tumblr toxic again then you will not be welcomed here by the community. Behave.

ok, so - one thing that I didn't really appreciate about tumblr until I moved here from reddit is the secondary effect of the slower post cycle, in the form of acting like a slow serotonin drip.
I have a post that's like a week old at this point, and I'll still get the occasional notification that someone liked or reblogged it, and I get just a tiny little hit of the happy brain juice reward. Just a smidge, a skoch, a droplet.
Posting the same post on reddit? Assuming it takes off, bigger rush for like the next... maybe 2-6 hours (shorter longer, depending on the size of the community) until newly generated content (i.e. The Algorithm) has pushed it out of the front page and everyone's mind, and it is consigned to the graveyard never to be found or seen again.
tumblr just lets a post echo into infinity, as long as it continues to find a tiny oasis or safe harbor of an audience that can appreciate it and gnu the message onward, a series of beacons that broadcast the message deeper into the cave, but send a tiny tribute of dopamine to tell its creator they're appreciated

Tumblr's making a come back
First twitter being taken over by musk, now reddit preventing the use of bots, this year is turning out to be the the one where tumblr makes it's comeback as a popular social media site. I myself came from reddit and I'm currently waiting for my fellow redditors to migrate over here.

tumblr is suddenly becoming big again because this is a war of attrition and all the competition is REALLY good at lighting themselves on fire.

I'd be okay if John Darnielle migrated here from Twitter. there's at least 3 albums worth of material here for him to work with I reckon.

Tumblr media
I've seen a few folks visiting/moving from Reddit who are worried about reblogging too many things on their main blogs (the first blog you're prompted to make when you join is your "main").
I'm not familiar with mobile, so this will probably be a bit different there, but I thought I'd mention for new folks that you can make side blogs if you'd like. The reason I made this blog is because 1) my main blog sort of has a theme, and 2) I do worry a bit about spamming some of my mutuals (folks I follow who also follow me back) with too much random stuff, but I still find that stuff interesting or entertaining so I want to horde it somewhere!
So this blog I'm posting from, ReblogsReblogs, is a side-blog that I pretty much entirely just reblog things to (no original content). Well, until I make this post right here, I guess.
Tumblr media
You can see here in this screenshot of this post I'm currently writing that I can select from the dropdown which of my blogs that I want to make this post on, and it works the same for any reblogs I make of other people's posts.
There's probably a better guide somewhere, but if you're new and you're feeling worried about reblogging too much now you know one of the possible solutions! Or maybe you can finally just live our your dream of having a side blog dedicated entirely to deep sea animals? That's good too.
If a side blog doesn't sound any good to you, I've seen some folks mention the queue and scheduling options we have on Tumblr and that's also a good solution for extra things you want to reblog, but don't need to reblog immediately. A lot of us have BIG queues that we fill up with interesting stuff that keeps getting posted until it runs out, so our blogs keep posting fun stuff even if we're on vacation or w/e.
I was a Tumblr person before I became a Redditor, years ago, so it's been cool seeing some Redditors come over and check things out. I hope some of you stay and enjoy yourselves, Tumblr can be a refreshingly non-toxic space if you curate it properly. Fuck Spez. :)

To the Reddit refugees, I know I'm a bit late on this but welcome to this shipwreck of a site.
We have almost every fandom and most headcanons. If you can't find a headcanon, post one.
And stuff on Tumblr is meant to be liked and reblogged as many times as you want. It literally gives us serotonin even if the post is from like a few years ago.
Not a lot of people are probably gonna see this but I did want to do a formal welcome.
Hit me up if you need anything explained and I will do my best

Tumblr is nice
Several years ago I realized that Reddit didn’t quite fit me and I downgraded my Reddit activity heavily. Unsubbed from everything but art subs and niche subreddits. Maybe it was too much noise but I think it also was the threat of judgement. It was a nice feeling getting upvotes, I got my karma decently high. But it was a double edged sword, the sword of damocles hanging overhead was the threat of judgement. And for a lot of people I think that’s fine but for me it was too much.
that ain’t really here as much. It seems rare for someone to comment disapproval which is the only way people can express judgement directly afaik. At the most you’ll get ignored. Which like yeah doesn’t feel great, but it’s not malicious.
I like it here 😊
