I love the hunger games movies but they really took so much of katniss’ personality out. She is so fucking funny.

Could you do one for Finnick where no one knows they are together except close friends, we know katniss doesn’t like him much at first and the reader knows the rebellion plan and obviously Finnick so she doesn’t stop him from flirting with her and maybe(?) thinks it’s amusing because she knows why he’s doing it but it’s revealed in the arena they’re together and katniss is shocked
I hope you like it! I was excited to write it but I fear I made it far more angsty and less flirty than you would like! TITLE: A Lover's Cry WORD COUNT: 1.8k PAIRING: Finnick Odair x Reader WARNINGS: General hunger games violence, secret relationships, angst and multiple POV! (Katniss, Reader) TAGS: Let me know if I need to tag anything else! A/N: I actually really loved writing this one, and i hope you enjoy it despite only loosely basing it off your prompt! Thank you so much for the request and as always I take constructive critisicsm! Not beta read as usual! -
“So what’s with those two?” Katniss questioned, pointing towards the screen.
She had watched Haymitch flick through the tributes, giving her and Peeta the basics on everyone who was going into the arena. Two had caught her eyes immediately, Finnick Odair from District 4, and Y/N L/N from District 8. She knew their names, their faces but she didn’t know anything about their skills or who they were. But both seemed far too polished, posh and pretty standing in front of their respective crowds. It seemed like they were ready to head back in there, almost like they wanted too.
Haymitch turned towards the television.
“Finnick Odair and Y/N L/N.” He stated, watching the scenes of people he knew, waving towards the crowd of people. Picture perfect smiles adorning their faces.“The Capitol Darlings, everyone loves them … and people to watch out for. Finnick Odair, the youngest Victor in history at only fourteen and Y/N L/N took the top spot for kills from Beetee during her games. Took out nine people in one go. Extremely humble” He shook his head, remembering the brutality.
Katniss made a face. “You’re kidding right?” She snorted.
“Yes, I’m kidding.” Haymitch rolled his eyes. “They’re both peacocks, preeners … The Capitol loves their charm and friendship. They have a lot of support. They would make good allies … but deadly competition.” Haymitch explained.
“Weaknesses?” Peeta questioned, leaning towards his mentor.
“Finnick will have Mags in there, she basically raised him. He’ll want to protect her in whatever ways he can” Haymitch told them, taking a seat. “Y/N … far too trusting at heart and will do anything to protect them both. She’d rather see herself die than her friends.” He stated.
Katniss simply nodded.
-
Katniss walked into the training room, and scanned her surroundings … She didn’t know these Victors well enough to decide who she wanted to align herself with. According to Haymitch … to make it through the Quarter Quell, she and Peeta needed strong allies. Though she knew deep down the only one she could truly depend on was Peeta.
Katniss walked towards the bow and arrows laying on the table when she heard the sound of a faint giggle, something she thought she would never hear. She looked up, and her eyes moved around the room … finally they landed on the culprit. She frowned at the sight as she watched a blush rise on Y/N’s face. It wasn’t from endurance training, but from Finnick Odair.
Katniss had not taken Finnick, refused to, even … he was far too cocky for her taste and she didn’t want him anywhere near her. But Y/N seemed almost enamoured by him … like she liked … whatever the hell was going on.
Katniss made a mental note of the two, as she headed towards Mags … she would keep that to herself for now. She needed to make some friends here, and Katniss thought that Mags would be a good start.
-
“You’re going to get us caught, Finnick.” You blushed, pushing him away as you headed in the opposite direction. “Play it cool, Odair … can’t have everyone knowing about us.” You whispered.
“Sorry.” Finnick put his hands up in defence, a small smile lacing his features. “I’ll try to tone it down but looking at you … that’s going to be hard to do.”
“Zip it.” You made the motion of your lips. “We’ve got training to do.” You told him, gesturing towards the room.
Everyone else was laser focused on honing their skills, making it known that they were not to be messed with in the Games. But you two were simply goofing off, and giggling like two schoolgirls who had gossip that no one else knew. You were certain that Snow wasn’t pleased, nor was the new Game Maker but you were in your world. Finnick had always made it hard to concentrate on the task at hand.
You and Finnick had been together for three years. During the 71st Hunger Games you had both been mentors for your respective Districts, and he had confessed to you. It was strange … so confusing to find love in the hardship of the Games but you wouldn’t trade that for the world. You loved him more than anything and he loved you right back. Long distance had been hard at first but you made it work, you would always make it work for him.
“Find me later?” He asked.
“I know your room number.” You said, smiling towards him.
-
“I don’t know if I’m ready to go back in there.” You whispered, snuggling closer to Finnick.
You knew the plan, and you knew you had to get Katniss and Peeta out of that arena. Plutarch and Haymitch had made that abundantly clear. There was a Rebellion and Plutarch was on your side, he was hiding in plain sight, ready to take down The Capitol. You jumped at the chance to join, even if that meant sacrificing your own life. Finnick had agreed immediately once he knew you were joining. He had always shared your sentiments about having a better future for everyone.
You wanted a better life, a quiet life with him and you would fight for that every single day. You finally had your chance, and you had no idea if it was going to work but you had to try, you had to fight.
“I know.” He whispered, his thumb gliding across your hip. “I’m not either.”
“When we’re in there …” You muttered, kissing his jaw. “You have to remember that Katniss and Peeta are the most important ones there. Okay? You have to protect them first and everything else comes later.”
He smelt like vanilla, probably from the soap supplied from The Capitol, but it was so soothing to you.
“I … I don’t know if I can do that.” Finnick said, plainly. “I know this Rebellion is important … I know that they are important but they’re not the most important things to me, Y/N. You and Mags will always be far more important than some Rebellion.”
“Finnick.” You felt the lump rise in your throat.
This could be the last time that you two were together, and you weren’t handling it well. You knew you would never be safe again after winning The Games. You were well aware that you would never have peace again, but you didn’t think you would be in this position ever again. You certainly didn’t want to be here with Finnick.
“Let’s just be together right now.” He said, kissing the top of your head. “Let’s pretend that nothing is going to happen tomorrow and we're just laying under the stars and nothing is going to go wrong.” His breathing started to even out, and his heartbeat steadied your own.
“Okay.” You whispered, desperately swallowing. “Okay.”
-
“Finnick! Katniss!” You cried, chasing them into the woods, Johanna and Peeta on your tail.
The Games hadn’t been going as planned.
First you had been separated from Finnick, which had caused you great distress. You ended up pairing with Johanna, Beetee and Wiress, fighting your way through blood rain and wild beasts.
Then you had lost both Wiress and Mags. You had lost so many who joined The Rebellion, you watched the announcements every night and flinched whenever a cannon fired, wondering if you were losing a friend or foe. But you didn’t have time to grieve either of them, so much was at stake. You had to make it through another night to ensure that you would be saved. Giving up when you were so close wasn’t an option
But God you were so tired.
Then … the jabberjays started.
You hated jabberjays.
They hadn't been used during your games, but you knew they tortured anyone who listened.
You had stepped out to find something food for everyone, and Beetee volunteered to come with you. You were all hungry, and getting weaker, especially after the fight at the cornucopia. You needed some sort of energy, and you weren’t going to see anyone die of starvation.
You had been gone for maybe twenty minutes when you heard Katniss scream, shortly followed by Finnick. Fear had seized your heart, as you wasted no time chasing the sounds, Beetee desperately calling for you.
You weren’t afraid to fight whatever threat was out there … especially when Finnick’s life was on the line. You would gladly die if it meant he lived.
You had met up with everyone, chasing down the other two and when you had found them, screaming, Jabberjays fluttering above them … your voice crying for help … you had cried, desperately trying to reach Finnick but to no avail.
He and Katniss were trapped, writhing on the ground … sobbing and there was nothing you could do but wait.
It had been horrible to watch, you could only imagine what they were experiencing.
You didn’t care who knew anymore, you would scream from the rooftops that you were in love with Finnick, if that meant he would be okay. You needed him to be okay.
It seemed like hours before the Jabberjays had flown away, and you had run to his side in an instant. Holding him close to you, assuring him that you were okay.
“Y/N?” His voice sounded so goddamn small.
“I’m here baby.” You whispered, into his ear, gently rocking the man. “I am here, and I am okay. You’re okay.” You leaned in and kissed his forehead.
You were well aware of the shocked eyes on you, no one but Johanna knew anything about the two of you, and you met the brown eyes of Katniss. She seemed the most shocked out of anyone here. You knew she didn’t particularly like Finnick, she had only really met the persona he portrayed to the world. She didn’t know him like you did, you knew his heart.
“Everything is going to be okay.” You told him. “It’s going to be all okay.”
-
“He loves them.” Katniss said after a moment of silence, watching the two figures in the water.
She wondered how she could have missed it, all the signs were there yet she had been shocked. She didn’t understand the two, probably never would but that wasn’t really any of her concern.
“Yeah.” Johanna nodded. “They do. They’ve been through a lot together, I’ve known for a long time that those two were together. It’s disgusting really how much they love each other, they would quite literally kill for one another. Can’t blame them though, when you find someone like that you keep them close to your heart.” She shrugged.
“I never thought …” Katniss trailed off.
“That anyone could ever love someone that much?” Johanna questioned, crossing her arms. “Well believe it, Katniss, because it’s right there.”
Katniss moved her gaze away from Johanna and back towards the water, the kiss was short and sweet but in that moment she knew that nothing could break those two apart. Nothing would, and they had something worth fighting for.

The Feral One • Ch 14
Finnick x Y/N
Series Masterlist Link
A fluffy/angsty chapter for you all :)
Content Warnings - Panic Attack
Tumblr media
“Good morning Fiesty!” Johanna barks as she enters your room. You had just finished the bland breakfast the doctors gave you. “I brought someone for you!”
Finnick shuffles in after Johanna, still avoiding getting close to you.
“Finn!” you exclaim. He looks at you with sad eyes that make you want to cry.
“I’m not going to hurt anyone,” you sniffle. “Please believe me.”
Finnick just stands there, not responding. Johanna on the other hand, walks right up to you and slaps you in the face.
“Ow!” you shout at her. “That hurt!”
“See!” Johanna states proudly. “She’s harmless. She didn’t even fight back.”
“I can scream and she won’t do anything about it!” Johanna states before screaming. You cover your ears, but don’t panic. The doctors enter your room to see what all the noise is and you tell them it’s fine. Johanna just screamed at you to show that you wouldn’t attack anyone.
Johanna’s demonstrations ease Finnick’s nerves a little. Maybe they did fix you.
He slowly approaches your bed and you hold out your hand to him.
“Why would they fix you?” he asked. “It doesn’t make any sense.”
You shrug. “Honestly I don’t know but I don’t really care. All that matters is I’m fixed and we can cuddle without me trying to kill you!” you grin.
“Gross,” Johanna mutters. “I’m out of here. Keep it PG you two.” You laugh as she leaves.
Finnick sighs and crawls into bed with you. Despite still being cuffed to the bed, you’re able to snuggle up into his side quite comfortably.
“I missed you,” you sigh, stifling a yawn. You only woke up an hour ago but your lack of exercise has made you lethargic.
“I missed you too,” he hums, stroking circles onto your arm. You don’t even mind that he’s pressed up against you in his District 13 jumpsuit, while you wear nothing but your underwear and a hospital gown.
“I can’t wait to be free,” you tell him. “No matter where I go I always seem to be locked up in a cage.”
“When the war is over we will both be free,” he replies. “Snow will be dead and we can do whatever we want.”
“What do you want to do?” you ask him.
“I want to go back to four and live in a house on the north end of the district,” he states. “I want to have a big garden that overlooks the ocean, and a big couch I can nap on.”
“Do I get to come with?” you ask, wondering where you fit in to his plans.
“Of course,” he grins. “I still need a roommate. Who else would tell me to pick my dirty clothes up off the floor?”
“Ah,” you sigh. “So I’m the roommate?”
“For now,” he states but he knows exactly what you are hinting at. “Can we just focus on getting out of here for right now and worry about whether or not you are the roommate later?” he asks.
“Of course,” you respond, looking up at him. “I don’t care what I am as long as I get to be with you.”
He smiles as his lips approach yours, leaning in closer until your door opens and a doctor walks in.
“Mr. Odair,” she states, seemingly unenthused about the scene in front of her. “You are not supposed to be in here unsupervised.”
“Right,” he grumbles, sitting up and swinging his legs over the side of the bed.
“Miss Y/L/N has some visitors from command,” the doctor states.
“I’ll come back later,” he states, brushing your fingers with his as he leaves your room.
The moment he leaves, Haymitch and Boggs enter your room.
“Wow Haymitch you look sober,” you tell the victor.
“And you’re speaking!” he chuckles. “Guess we both changed.”
“Miss Y/L/N we need to ask you a favor,” Boggs states.
“Sure, what is it?” you ask.
“Peeta has been having a hard time since we rescued him,” Haymitch explains. “We were wondering if you would go in and speak with him, as a friend.”
“I can do that,” you nod. Haymitch sighs in relief.
“Miss Y/L/N,” Boggs states. “There are a few rules regarding your visit. One, absolutely no mentions of Katniss or anyone close to her. If he starts talking about her, just nod your head and don’t aggravate him. Two, don’t talk to him about what they did in the capital. It might set him off. He’s restrained in his room but we are letting you in unrestrained. If at any point you feel unsafe you can leave.”
The doctors bring you a jumpsuit and you get ready for your visit to Peeta. It feels great to no longer be stuck in your room, even if this is just a quick break.
“Remember, you can leave at any point,” Haymitch reminds you. You nod and step into Peeta’s room.
“Hey Peeta,” you grin. “I missed you.”
“Y/N!” he smiles. “I was so worried about you!”
“How are you feeling?” you ask him.
“Not great,” he sighs. “I can’t tell what’s real anymore.”
“Yeah,” you sigh in return.
“Has it happened yet?” he asks you.
“Has what happened?” you ask him, a bit confused.
“Has the timer gone off?” he asks, confusing you even more.
“I’m not quite sure what timer you are referring to,” you tell him, slowly taking a few steps back. Your brain didn’t like this.
“Your timer,” he states as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “The one the capital gave you.”
At his mention of the capital, you freeze. You couldn’t do this. Your hands start to sweat and your face turns pale as you do your best to back away from him.
Boggs must notice your sudden change of mood as he enters the room and tells Peeta to excuse you two while you went to do your treatment. You hadn’t been receiving any treatment, he just wanted to get you out of there.
“Y/N, what was he talking about?” Haymitch asks.
“I don’t know,” you respond. “I think I need to go lay down for a bit.”
The doctors run every test on you imaginable with the technology they have available to them in 13 but they found nothing. Maybe Peeta was wrong. Maybe he made it up.
After monitoring you for another week, President Coin finally sets your release date for three days from now. They would release you immediately but they weren’t expecting you would ever be released so they need to figure out your living situation and what monitoring you will need first. You asked to live with Finnick but they said no.
“Finn,” you whine, sitting in his compartment. The doctors let you out of your hospital room supervised as long as you returned for meals and to sleep.
“Why won’t they let me move in?” you ask. “You don’t even have a roommate.”
“Because we aren’t married,” he replies. “In District 13 you have to be married if you want to live with someone of a different gender. I already asked if they could make an exception for us because we’ve been living together for years now but they won’t allow it. I think they’re gonna put you with Johanna when she’s released.”
“Well then let’s get married!” you state, catching him off guard. He laughs at this suggestion, causing you to frown.
“Oh,” he states, noticing your reaction. “That was a serious suggestion?”
“Yes,” you respond.
“We aren’t even dating!” he replies. “And you want to just skip to getting married?”
“Uh yeah,” you respond. “I don’t think they’ll let us live together if we’re just dating so marriage it is!”
Finnick groans and puts his head in his hands.
“Y/N marriage is a serious thing,” he states. “People get married because they’re in love, not to become roommates.”
“So you aren’t in love with me?” you frown. Boys are so confusing.
“No that’s not what I’m saying,” Finnick responds. “I’m saying that getting married just so District 13 lets us live together is not a good reason to be getting married.”
“So you are in love with me?” you grin.
“Shut up,” he replies.
“Make me”

Everlark (Catching Fire, Ch. 24-25)
katniss being angry that peeta hasn't come to help her before she realises he literally can't
peeta putting his hand up against the wall and her putting hers up to meet him. these two are so angsty romance-coded
"i just stare at his face, doing my best to hang onto my sanity"
peeta holding and rocking katniss on his lap, lifting her chin so she looks at him. husband. he loves her so much.
(as an aside, johanna and finnick basically being katniss's and peeta's older siblings is so adorable. what a cute fun brokem damaged little family)
when katniss finds out that finnick loves a "poor, mad girl back home", i can't not think of the parallels being set up between annie/finnick and peeta/katniss in the next book
ah the beach scene
"everything. that's what peeta wants me to take from him"
"i realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if peeta dies. me"
"i do. i need you"
i'm dead at this point. how can people say katniss didn't love peeta. i got the evidence right here!
So before he can talk, I stop his lips with a kiss. I feel that thing again. The thing I only felt once before. In the cave last year, when I was trying to get Haymitch to send us food. I kissed Peeta about a thousand times during those Games and after. But there was only one kiss that made me feel something stir deep inside. Only one that made me want more. But my head wound started bleeding and he made me lie down. This time, there is nothing but us to interrupt us. And after a few attempts, Peeta gives up on talking. The sensation inside me grows warmer and spreads out from my chest, down through my body, out along my arms and legs, to the tips of my being. Instead of satisfying me, the kisses have the opposite effect, of making my need greater. I thought I was something of an expert on hunger, but this is an entirely new kind.
the idea of peeta trying to talk despite katniss kissing him and then just giving up is too much
the warmth that grows inside of her exclusively due to peeta
the line about a new kind of hunger. bars
she's so down bad for him, and i think she truly realises here, even if she doesn't let herself think about it too much.
finnick waking up and realising the way they're wrapped around eachother and being like... "um get a room? if you want?" is hilarious too
i truly wonder how far they would've gone if they hadn't been interrupted by the lightning bolt. judging by katniss saying there's nothing to stop them this time but them, i think she might've not stopped at all. and the wrapping around each other. i know they were about to cut away in the capitol feeds.
peeta again being husband and making katniss lie down and leading her to bed. "i let him lead me over to where the others are." the "i let him." this books is just a masterpiece in showing the change in their dynamics.
lol at katniss being like "fuck no" at the suggestion of having kids with gale. "for one thing, that's never been part of my plan." like how much clearer has she got to make it. contrasting this to when peeta dropped the baby bomb and she was like: it could be true by now if it wasn't for the games, right? she's so shameless
i honestly feel like crying every time katniss says she thinks of peeta's child safe in the meadows. the fact that it's just peeta's child makes me think that the unnamed, unidentified unspoken of mother, is her. like that's who she's picturing in this fantasy, in this dream.
"when i wake, i have a brief delicious feeling of happiness that is somehow connected with peeta" and she clings to it as long as she can
just something so beautiful that all this talk of love and family and peace and the future is linked with peeta and thus her own happiness. like my heart aches for her.
she can't look at peeta the next morning after their kissing the night before. i think a big part of it was because she just allowed herself to think all these thoughts involving peeta and then came back down to earth very quickly and realised that this wasn't possible for her because of the QQ
the pearl, their inside joke because of effie! the fact they remembered, the fact that they laugh together like this even with everything going on
katniss determining that peeta is her biggest enemy because their desires are the complete opposite when it comes to survival. "i promise myself i will defeat his plan." and even despite them both realising they're at odds, despite peeta not being able to look at her after, they sit together hand in hand.
the pearl and everything it comes to symbolise with these two kills me.

Post mj-hayeffie <3
i feel like effie def has white roots bc she probably still died her hair, regardless if people saw it or not. and papa haymitch’s grey hair <3 honestly for Effie it’s probably stress induced. (honestly for both of them lol) Haymitch is buff i know, but like he’s got grandbabies to lift up. And Effie is very.. thin and narrow because thats what i wanted. She’s probs still very wan after her time spent in capitol prison. AND THEY BOTH HAVE FRECKLES FROM BEING OUTSIDE! and his hair is much better because Effie made him use conditioner <3
inspired by @mirixmoya 's fic Bejeweled because it made me cry. <3

Headcanon that for a while Katniss and Peeta both think they’re the super clingy one in the relationship. I could see the first time Peeta has to go to the Capitol for a checkup both of them thinking they’re really dependent on the other.
Doesn’t matter though when they reunite. They realize they’re equally clingy and just have good reunion sex
Okay, so firstly i have to say that I cannot BELIEVE that people are actually sending ME anonymous asks. ME. I feel so unbelievably special, omg. I totally feel like I don't bring much in terms of "creating" to the fandom so anyone wanting to come to ME for anything is just so... HEARTFEELINGS Also, Anon, you're absolutely and completely right. I'm not actually convinced you aren't secretly Suzanne Collins in my DMs. These two, even with years of therapy and healing, are always always going to be codependent as HELL. Peeta's trips to the Capitol early on, while Katniss is still legally confined, drive her absolutely INSANE. like, he'll have to go for checkups with Aurelius and also for adjustments to his prosthetic because he's still growing and it needs to be adjusted for his height. She very seriously considers trying to fit in his suitcase. He walks in on her trying to contort herself into it while Buttercup is eyeing her judgmentally. She spends the entire time bothering Haymitch and crying to him. He doesn't know how to deal with her being this openly emotional about it so he's just like
Tumblr media
Peeta on the other hand really tries hard to focus on what needs done and puts on a brave face, but the SECOND he's on the train he's wondering if he could survive jumping off and running back to Katniss. Maybe if he tucks and rolls juuuuust right....? He keeps eyeing the emergency break. Once he gets to his hotel he's RUNNING for the phone in his room, but misses Katniss because she's busy crying to Haymitch while Haymitch tries to watch Plutarchs singing competition show. When they finally connect that night they just stay on the phone with each other to fall asleep. Peeta spends his time in the capitol waiting for his prosthetic checking out the shops and constantly buying things that remind him of Katniss or that he thinks she'll like. He stocks up on cans of Lamb Stew and baking chocolate to make her some hot chocolate. Even buys a fancy cheese from a local artisan fromager to make her extra special cheese buns. He also, secretly, takes the pearl that he snuck out of her nightstand to a jewler. He's having it inlaid into a necklace. When he FINALLY makes it back home, the bakery is closed for 2 days but he does manage to make one loaf of bread in that time...

Moves & Countermoves (Part 16)
Summary: No one ever wins the games, even fourteen years later, Y/N is still playing.
Prologue | Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10 | Part 11 | Part 12 | Part 13 | Part 14 | Part 15

It is cold and dark, woken from a peaceful slumber to run. Everyone around them is yelling, it’s always scary when grown ups yell.
They are scrambling now, tripping over each other in haste, to get to the woods. A place they’ve been forbidden to go.
“Come on, baby. Keep up.” His aunt insists, in a voice that sounds so like his mother’s. His mother.
“What about my mom and dad?” Everest asks.
“We’ll see them soon.” Madge tells him.
The sky opens and rains fire.
“You said we had an hour.” Gale shouts, over the commotion.
“They must’ve launched the fleet out of district eleven.” Everest’s grandfather calls back. “Get to the woods.”
He is a quiet man. Even tempered, he does not yell; yet he is yelling.
“Dad!” Aunt Madge tries to catch him, but her hands are full.
Full of Arista and me.
“Captain goes down with the ship.” He is gone, lost in the smoke, never to return. A debt paid for the lives he saved.
“No!” Everest wants to go back. Run to him, change it, but he can’t. Someone is holding him still, shaking his shoulders.
“Everest.”
His mother. But she isn’t here. She couldn’t be.
“Shh, shh.”
Mom. The boy startles awake, in their new living quarters of district thirteen. Just a dream.
The baby is crying, he must have woken her too.
Still his mother is there, rocking him gently, smoothing down his hair. “I’m here, you’re safe.”
Everest clings to her, watching as she uses a foot to push the bassinet from side to side. Quieting his littlest sister.
Daisy May.
A child wrought into the world through his mother’s blood, sweat and tears. She cries like it pains her to be separated from the woman who’s given her life and he does not blame her.
“Here, you can come lay with me.” Y/N offers, it is hard to be in two places at once.
Everest climbs into her bed, the spot left vacant by his father. The doctors are trying to make him comfortable, while his body adjusts to the lack of alcohol.
To the victors go the spoils.
————————————————————————
Morning comes much too early, signified by the shifting brightness of lights, rather than the sun.
Everest and Arista leave with Madge for school. There aren’t many children here in thirteen, most teachers have been made useful elsewhere.
This is one of the few things she has allowed, over their three weeks underground, hoping it will help the children acclimate.
Y/N sets her daughter down, in the makeshift bassinet, causing the infant to wail in protest.
“Just for a minute, just for a minute.” She’s coos, pulling on her jumpsuit as fast as she can. Even showering has proven difficult without the extra set of hands. Without Haymitch.
“Civilian Abernathy.” One of the guards call from outside the door.
“She’s fine.” Y/N assures him, finishing up the last of her buttons and tossing the baby sling over her head. Reaching down for the infant, she situates her gently. The silence is instant.
“Happy to hear it. Your presence is requested by President Coin.”
Y/N rolls her eyes. If it’s not one president it’s another. She opens the door to find the same man who’s been keeping an eye on her since arrival. “It’s not on my schedule.” She holds out her forearm, showcasing the printed timesheet.
“Your schedule will be revised to compensate the time.”
“Perfect.” Y/N forces a smile. “Any idea what this is about?” She follows him down to the elevator.
“I’m just here to escort you.” He draws the large metal doors closed around them.
“Ever had anybody jump?” They must be thirty stories up.
The soldier shifts. “Are you thinking about it?”
“No,” she shrugs, “just making conversation.”
They reach their destination and the gates plunk open, “charming.”
The rest of their trek is silent. He opens the door and then closes her inside to stand watch. Leaving her to the wolves.
“Y/N, thank you for meeting with me.” Alma Coin says, seated at the long rectangular table. “Please, have a seat.”
“She likes it better when I stand.” Y/N says, patting the child on her chest as she approaches the table.
“Of course.” Coin nods, “you look well.”
“I’m weller than I was when I got here.” Unconscious and hemorrhaging from birth complications.
Plutarch smiles. Hello again.
“I was glad to hear that you’ve received a clear bill of health from our medical team.” Coin runs the tip of her pen over paper as she speaks.
“So the therapist you have me meeting with is just for fun?” Y/N cocks her head to the side.
“For anyone to endure the level of psychological abuse that you have seen and still persevere…you are an inspiration to us all.”
Y/N swallows hard. What do you want?
“Even still, we feel it’s beneficial for you to continue your sessions with Dr. Aurelius.”
“Any word on extracting the victors being held in the Capitol?” Peeta. Johanna. Annie.
“Rest assured, we are working around the clock to find a safe and effective way to liberate the other victors.”
Y/N nods, bouncing lightly from one foot to the other.
“I hear Haymitch is nearing the end of his withdrawal process and will be assimilated into the general population in the next few days.” Coin continues.
Another nod.
“I understand how delicate this subject may be for you, but if you’d like to keep separate quarters-”
“Why would I do that?” Y/N demands.
Plutarch clears his throat. Alma Coin is about to step over the line and finally understand why Snow kept such tight reins on his Capitol darling.
“Given your history.”
“History?”
“This can be a fresh start for the both of you.” Coin replies, softly. “Dissolve the marriage, with custody arrangements for the children.”
“I don’t want to dissolve my marriage.” Maybe there was some version of her that did. A casualty of war, buried long before his babies grew inside her.
“This is all you’ve known since you were nineteen. I can see how the idea of leaving would be intimidating.”
“You don’t know half the hell I’ve been through, or what Haymitch had to do for me to be standing in this room today. If you did, you wouldn’t be insinuate that this ‘arrangement’ is something I want.” Y/N’s chest heaves, anger boiling in her veins.
“Forgive me.” President Coin concedes, “I didn’t mean to offend you, it was only an offer.”
“I appreciate the thought, but it won’t be necessary. If that’s all-”
“There is one more thing,” Alma is not yet finished, “in regards to Katniss.”
Leave her alone. “Katniss needs more time.”
The president steeples her hands. “I wish we had that to offer, unfortunately the revolution has grown stagnant. We need to fuel this fire, otherwise we might be waiting another seventy-five years.”
“What do you want her to do?”
Now Plutarch takes the floor. “We’d like to shoot a series of propaganda, I like to call them propos. Ideally, we would use you and Katniss in tandem. The districts will follow Katniss, but the Capitol will follow you.”
We would use you. “Can I talk to her first?”
“Please do.” This is a clear dismissal.
————————————————————————
“Sorry I’m late.” Y/N is all but panting when she reaches her husband. Past the rooms harboring Cashmere, Finnick, Katniss and the other patients of thirteen.
He stops bouncing the muted green ball off the wall, catching it in hand. There’s not much to do down here, especially in what feels like solitary confinement. The good doctors are all concerned with his fine motor skills. Haymitch simply tells them, ‘they’re fine.’ Somehow they don’t find this funny.
He gives his wife a tired grin. “Word is, you got stuck in a meeting with Coin…anything new on Peeta?”
“No,” Y/N sighs, “she called me in to tell me about her master plan with Plutarch.”
“Ah,” Haymitch chortles, “do tell.”
“They wanna use Katniss to appeal to the districts and use me to rally support in the Capitol.” She plops, unceremoniously, onto his bed, shoes and all. Removing the baby from her carrier when she begins to fuss.
Thirteen’s jumpsuits are nothing to write home about, but easy enough to open and nurse at a moment’s notice.
“I can think of a few reasons as to why it won’t work.” Haymitch sits at the foot of his mattress.
“Lay it on me.”
“First of all, Katniss can’t act. Not to save her life.”
Y/N lifts a shoulder, “maybe she’ll do better with practice.”
“I think it’ll be harder than they’re expecting. Especially now, without-” Peeta.
“Yeah,” Y/N looks away.
“What else is wrong?” He knocks her knee.
“Coin offered to dissolve our marriage.”
Haymitch shifts, “and what did you say?”
“I told her to fuck herself.” Y/N says, with a hand over Daisy’s ear. “Nicely.”
At this he smiles, “good. I’m glad we’re both in agreement.”
Y/N reaches for his hand. “You look really good today, Haymitch.” Healthy. No longer trembling or in pain, from lack of alcohol.
“You too.” This separation thing is brutal. They’ve never been apart like this since before they were married.
Y/N can’t run down, at any hour after a nightmare, to crawl into his bed. Same way she couldn’t sit by his bedside and comfort him, when he needed it most, because their children needed her.
“Don’t do that,” he chides.
“Do what?”
“Don’t cry. Don’t.” He moves in closer, putting an arm around her, with Daisy nursing between them.
“I just miss you.” I wanna be with you.
Haymitch inhales, deeply. “When I get outta here, I’m gonna be so far up your ass-” This earns him a laugh, so he keeps going. “You’re going to be sick of me.” I wanna be with you too.
————————————————————————-
“Katniss.” She is in the same place Y/N left her. Alone in her room, with her mind out to sea.
The girl says nothing, acknowledging Y/N with a glance as she rolls Peeta’s pearl between her fingers.
“I was hoping we could talk.”
Katniss pauses to consider. “I stayed with you.”
“Hmm?”
“I stayed with you and slept in that stupid chair by your bed for three days, before they made me leave.”
“Katniss.”
“They took Haymitch first, when his headaches got too bad. Madge took the baby and it was just us.” Katniss recounts, “I thought you were gonna die.”
Y/N runs a hand over her dark hair, loose from its braid.
“Then you got up and kept on living, like nothing happened. Like Haymitch wasn’t drying out in some facility, like the bombs never went off, like the games never happened and Peeta isn’t gone.” Katniss says, “but I’m not like you, I can’t do that.”
I hope you don’t end up like me, Katniss. “Can I show you something?”
Katniss nods.
“This is a trick somebody taught me a long time ago. I think it might help.” Y/N holds out a hand.
Katniss mirrors her.
“I feel everything right in my chest. All my pain, worry, anger; it always starts right there.” She gently rests her hand over her heart, just above where her child sleeps, content in her sling.
Katniss follows, placing a hand on her own stomach.
“I just hold it there and think.”
“Think about what?”
“What I’m going to do with those feelings. Sometimes all I can do is feel them. Other times I can channel them into something else, something good.”
“Haymitch taught you that, didn’t he?”
‘That’s where it hurts, huh? Right here?’ Haymitch rubs at the ache in her chest.
That was a lifetime ago. “He did.”
Katniss allows her hand to fall away. “I can’t forgive him.” Not yet, maybe not ever.
“I’m not asking you to.”
This stuns Katniss, eyes wide, searching.
“I do want you to remember that he cares about you and he cares about Peeta. Leaving him behind isn’t something he wanted. It was a choice we had to make; the Capitol fleet was within firing distance. We took a hit and we still circled back, but Peeta and Johanna were already gone.”
“I didn’t know.”
“How could you know?” Y/N replies, ruefully. I wasn’t here to tell you.
Katniss blinks at her.
“I had a meeting today, with Plutarch and President Coin.”
“What did they want?”
“They wanna use us, namely you, to fuel the revolution.” Y/N cuts to the chase, “I’m no stranger to being used, but I have found that if you play your cards right, it can be mutually beneficial.”
“Beneficial how?” She wonders.
“Help us get Peeta back and take down Snow.”
————————————————————————
“It’s been a week since our last session. Any changes? Anything specific you’d like to talk about?”
Y/N sinks back into the chair. “My son’s been having nightmares.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Dr. Aurelius jots this down. “About anything in particular?”
“The bombs, district twelve, losing his grandfather.” My dad.
“This was your father, correct.”
“Yes.”
“And what about your husband’s family?”
“They were killed before I met him.”
“Killed?” This is news.
Y/N nods, “Snow had them killed as a punishment for how Haymitch won his games.”
“That must have been hard.”
“That’s not my story to tell.”
“Tell me your story.” The doctor crosses one leg over the other.
“Which one?” Y/N picks at the bed of her thumbnail.
“The real one, if you feel so inclined.”
“I’ve never told anyone.” Not even people I’ve known for years.
“There’s a first time for everything.”
“I don’t even know how to tell it.”
“Try.” He says simply.
“Well, I was born in district twelve, to my mother and father. My dad was the mayor and my mom…” My mom- “they both grew up in town.”
“What does that mean?” There is an implication he doesn’t understand.
“In district twelve,” which doesn’t exist anymore, “only the merchant families live in town.”
“They’re wealthy?” He deduces.
“By comparison.” Nothing like a victor’s salary.
“To what?”
“People from the Seam.” Y/N explains, “where Haymitch grew up.”
“I see.”
“The first few years, I was close with my mom’s sister, her name was Maysilee.”
“Was she lost in the bombing as well?”
“No.”
“How did she pass?”
Don’t you watch the games down here? “In the Quarter Quell, same year Haymitch won.”
“Did he kill her?”
“Come on, doc, the story’s not that twisted.” Y/N shakes her head. “They were allies.”

Finnick Odair x Reader
This idea came from : @sakuraazharuno
Tumblr media
**
"I volunteer," you screamed.
You weren't going to let Annie go. You couldn't . You join Finnick up on the stage.
He gives her a sad smile he knew she would volunteer.
You were freaking out. Absoltely losing it.
You had mascara running down your face. You should be socializing and getting sponsors, but you were crying in the bathroom.
You were terrified. You would either have to, watch Finnick die, kill him. Kill yourself, have him kill you, or watch him lose you.
You walked out to find him. He was talking to the girl on fire.
"Do you want a sugar cube? I know there for the horses, but they have their whole lives. We have a few weeks," he says offering her ons.
She gives his a disgusted look, he eats it himself.
You walk up to him and wrap your arms around his waist, your tear stained face hidden in his neck.
"Hey baby," he says smiling.
Katniss looks even more disgusted, a stupid capitol lover. Upset that he would die, he would, not her.
Finnick turns you around and walks you back somewhere private. You both end up in your shared room.
"What's wrong baby," he softly coos at you.
"We aren't going to live," you cry into his chest.
He softly soothes you.
"I don't want to tell you this," he softly whispers the plan in your ear
"You don't know it, kay," he says.
You nod in agreement.
"I love baby," you say.
"Hey, you know I love you," he says plopping a sugar cube in your mouth.
You smile as you bite down.
"That was my last one," he says in a mock pout. His lips dive down to meet yours, taking some of the precious sugar with him.
"Rude," you playfully shove him.
"Why didn't you tell me?" You question
Finnick sighs, "Haymitch thought it might upset you, that I would be willing to die to get Katniss out,"
Your face drops , "I'm not letting that happen." You state and hug him. You wrap your arms around his neck as he hides his face in your neck.
You might die. But he wouldn't. He couldn't. And, fuck Panem. If Finnick dies, than you can't live. If Katniss had to die for him to live....
You couldn't think like that, but if it came down to it... could you let him sacrifice himself?

That's the kind of heartbreak time could never mend - Part 2
Summary: a talk on the beach reveals somethings and Snow takes you by surprise
Tumblr media
Previous Part - Next Part
The beach was beautiful, the breeze going through her hair made Finnick stop in his steps for a moment as he looks at her. Her eyes look haunted while looking towards the ocean like it would hold all of the answers to her questions. She had been doing her tour for the last month and had arrived this morning, shaking district 4 into once again preparing a big feast to welcome the winner of the Hunger Games.
He sits next to her and waits for her to acknowledge him, he watches the ocean just like she has been doing, trying to ignore the memories of the recent nightmare he had. They stay like that for a moment just looking at the ocean before she breaks the silence.
“Do you think I’m a bad person?”, Finnick can’t help but take a deep breath at her question, they had survived the Hunger Games by killing people so could they really be seen as good people.
“You aren’t, the games are.”, he hears her scoff softly and he looks at her, a frown adorns her face.
“I killed so many people to try and save her just for her to get killed by my fault because I couldn’t protect her.”, she says and Finnick can’t help but close his eyes at her words, the raw emotion in her voice makes him sick.
“You can never control anything in the arena, especially not someone’s life. It wasn’t your fault.”, he whispers after a moment and silence follows his statement before he hears a few sniffles.
“I’m just so tired. Tired of seeing her in my dreams at night, hearing about her and knowing that I couldn’t do anything.”, she says while her voice breaks through the words and Finnick turns to look at her. Tears are streaming down her cheeks as she bites her bottom lip to try and not to cry.
“I can’t tell you that the nightmares will get better because they will always be there, but you have people that are here to help you. Let them in, it’s worth it. I promise.”, a few tears roll down her cheeks and after a few seconds she chuckles.
“You’re not so bad Finnick Odair.”, Finnick chuckles at her words and smiles as he sees a small smile appear on her lips as she looks at him.
“I live to please.”, he tries to say cheekily but it falls a bit flat, still it makes her laugh and he enjoys the sight of her laughing.
They turn back to look at the ocean and Finnick tries for the first time to try and find something to say to her, but nothing comes to mind. Only one question continues to nag him, but he doesn’t know if he should ask her.
“Why did you come out here?”, he says softly after a moment and listens to her taking a deep breath.
“Couldn’t fall asleep, I was turning around in bed and then memories came back, and it felt suffocating.”, Finnick nods slowly at her words before looking at her.
“How do you feel now? Do you want to talk about it?”, Haymitch had told him that she didn’t talk to him, sometimes she would talk with Peeta but not often. He had also told him that something had happened at their return in district twelve, but he hadn’t been able to tell him what.
“When I came back and went to see my parents, they could barely look at me in the eyes. I tried to talk to them but the only thing they did was shove me a bag with my clothes in my hands and tell me that they didn’t want a murderer as a daughter.”, he feels sick at her words and closes his eyes for a moment. As he opens them again to look at her, she is holding her legs close to her, eyes glassy as she looks at the ocean.
“Then I saw Gale, I used to like him, and he yelled about the fact that I killed Prim and that I shouldn’t have come back.”, Finnick tries not to let the anger take over at her words, but it quickly dies down as he sees a tear roll down her cheeks.
He comes closer to her and carefully puts an arm around her shoulders, not sure if he is allowed to touch her but she leans into his touch and Finnick puts his other arm around her while she sobs.
“it’s okay. I got you.”, he whispers softly as he rubs his hand comfortingly against her back while she sobs into his chest. They stay like that for some time until her sobs quiet down and Finnick keeps her close, feeling for the first time in his life protective over someone that isn’t family.
“I met a girl; her name was Annie and I had to mentor her during her games. I immediately felt protective over her and when she got out of the arena by some miracle, I discovered I fell in love with her.”, he says softly, trying not to let the tears take over at the memories coming back to him, he doesn’t know why he is telling her this but he wants to.
“Everything was great for a moment until Snow learned about my feelings for her and then it all went to hell. I had to prostitute myself, I already had to do it before but then even more to protect her. I did it at the beginning, but it made her go crazy, the arena hadn’t been kind to her but just a little thing could make her go into a panic.”, she left the embrace to look at him, shock in her eyes at his words and Finnick sighs before looking at the sand under him.
“One night I was with a client, she went into a panic attack, and no one was there to help her. She died minutes after.”, he says and hears her take a shaky breath at his words.
“Finnick.”, she whispers softly but he shakes his head before looking up towards her.
“You don’t have to say anything, I don’t even know why I told you this.”, he says while letting out a shaky chuckle.
“You don’t have to pretend you’re fine.”, he hears her whisper, and he can’t help but close his eyes at her words to try and not let the tears fall down his cheeks.
“I should’ve been there, I-”, he starts to say but is quickly cut off by her voice.
“It isn’t your fault, no matter what anyone says it isn’t.”, Finnick can’t help but let a few tears escape at her words, a hand takes his and he opens his eyes to see her smiling softly at him.
“I’m so sorry this happened to you. But I promise you, you didn’t do anything wrong.”, he squeezes her hand in thanks and she smiles sadly at him.
“They fucked us up really bad didn’t they.”, he says while laughing coldly and he hears her huff a laughter.
“That they did.”, she whispers softly and Finnick doesn’t even realize he is still holding her hand as they look at the ocean while the sun starts appearing.
A yell can be heard inside the house and the both of them turn around to see Effie running around looking worried while a sleepy Haymitch and Peeta follow after her.
“She wasn’t in her bed! Where could she be?”, they hear her yell and Finnick turns to look at the girl next to him who is smiling at the scene.
“I guess this is my cue to go back.”, she says and Finnick chuckles as Effie yells at Haymitch to help find you.
“I guess it is. Good luck with the mother hen.”, he says cheekily, and she laughs at his words.
“Thank you for everything.”, she whispers shily and Finnick can’t help but chuckle softly at her sudden shyness.
“You don’t have to thank me, we’re victors we have to stick together.”, she nods her head slowly before squeezing his hand one last time before leaving towards the house.
He watches her leave before turning around and looking at the ocean, for once feeling at peace. Effie’s voice can be heard into the distance as her victor arrives and Finnick can’t help but smile at the escort’s worried voice. He misses her already; he doesn’t know why as they just met but he shakes the feeling off as he gets up to get ready for the day.
--
The next time he sees her is at the big ball at Snow’s mansion to celebrate the end of her tour. He knows just as well as the rest of the victors that she will be ending the night at Snow’s desk and be told that she will be sold to the highest bidders until they aren’t interested anymore.
“Some people are saying that she will be even more popular than you.”, Johanna says with a disgusted expression and Finnick can’t help but mirror it.
“I don’t recommend it.”, he says and Johanna snorts at his words.
“Cheers to that.”, she says before Brutus arrives and they start to argue about something.
Haymitch, Peeta and Katniss arrive towards them and judging by Peeta’s face you are probably talking with Snow right now. Katniss looks pale, her dress looks beautiful, but her cheeks are hollow like she hasn’t eaten in days, and they all look tired.
“Who needs a drink?”, he hears Johanna say and everyone agrees at her words, she quickly takes a plate of drinks from a server and lets everyone take a glass.
“Let me guess, she is in the lion’s den.”, Brutus says after a moment and Haymitch sighs while nodding.
Before any of them can say anything, they see her arrive, her silver dress hugging her body to show it off to everyone just like all of the victors.
“You’re alright kid?”, Haymitch says as she arrives and she nods slowly, disbelief written on her face.
“He doesn’t want to sell me.”, she barely manages to whisper, and they all look at her like she has grown a second head.
“What do you mean?”, Johanna says, and all of the victors look at the girl in front of them.
“He says that the capitol needs to have something they can’t have, to show that he still has control over them. Doesn’t mean I won’t get paraded around but just to show them what they can’t have. He also said he has something planned for later.”, she whispers the last sentence after a moment and Finnick looks at Johanna in surprise.
“I guess the old man really is getting crazy.”, Johanna says and Haymitch snorts at her words before looking at his victor.
“I would say congratulation but if he has something planned it can’t be good.”, they all agree, and he sees her looking pale. Curious glances are thrown their way and Finnick knows they have to split up before people start to suspect something.
“Why don’t we go dance?”, Finnick says towards her, and she looks at him in surprise before nodding and taking his hand.
The dance goes smoothly, and he makes a few jokes about the people there to make her laugh and relax, by some miracle it works, and she starts telling him some things she saw. The song ends after a few minutes, and he brings her towards Haymitch but before he does, he whispers two important words.
“Be careful.”, she looks at him surprised but he leaves before she can say anything, he has an appointment to get to.

Your headcanons might just be my favorite ever!! Ily!! What about THG headcanons for how they would propose?? Or if you've dine that already, generally your wedding.
omg tysm!! you didn't specify just the guys like ppl usually do so just in case i'm gonna do all the characters i write for!! hope you like it!!
Tumblr media
coryo (politician coryo specifically) would probably plan an elaborate but private proposal - as much he loves to show you off, to bring you to parties and brag about his partner, he does like to keep his vulnerable side hidden from most people, so i think he would want to propose with no prying eyes. he would give you some long, cheesy speech and buy you the finest ring possible.
finnick takes you to the beach he grew up on in district 4, and treats you to a beautiful evening of food and wine, swimming, and then proposes to you by putting the ring in an oyster and telling you to look for the pearl. when you pull out a ring instead, he just grins like a fool and pops the question. he definitely cries when you say yes and just hugs you for what feels like an hour straight.
gale just asks if you want to marry him one day, like it's a totally casual and normal thing to ask out of nowhere. if you say yes, then he'll go get the ring and ask you officially this time, probably in a nice secluded place in the woods.
haymitch does it similarly to gale - just super casual. he strikes me as a "go down to the courthouse and sign the papers" kinda guy when it comes to marriage. if he knows you want something more romantic, though, he'd do his best to plan some kind of dinner to pop the question.
johanna seems like she'd do it super dramatically, but i think she would actually be very romantic about it, but still casual. she takes you out and waits until you arrive back home to ask, in the safety and privacy of your house (and so she can push you back onto the couch for a make out session when you say yes).
katniss has no idea how to propose, i think you might have to do it tbh. she is just not super romantic, or at least, she isn't good at showing it. if she did propose to you, though, she would work her ass off to get you the nicest gift possible and would probably stutter and stumble over her words when she asked. she's a small wedding kinda gal too.
lucy gray would make it a whole big show. she plans a whole fancy day, probably makes you do some kind of scavenger hunt to find your ring, and probably asks you to marry her via a beautiful song. marrying lucy gray means the entire covey is gonna be partying all night long.
peeta is a classic romantic guy, he's gonna take you out to dinner and pop the question on a nice nighttime walk, and give you a whole sappy speech that makes you cry. he is just so genuine and charming about the whole thing.
sejanus is gonna be super nervous to pop the question, and probably overplan a whole fancy night only to end up asking you before his plan starts because you look so good in the outfit he picked out for you that he just blurts it out.
tigris would probably prefer to be proposed to, but if she were to pop the question herself, it would be a very chill and intimate moment. the ring she gives you is probably a family heirloom and she apologizes that it isn't anything fancier, but it is an absolutely beautiful ring and she would also probably make her own wedding dress.

Moments in the Hunger Games that Dr. Gaul would hate
Dr. Gaul says that humans are naturally violent, and to prove her wrong, here are moments in the Hunger Games that show that they aren't.
-Lucy Gray comforting Jessup when he wasn't feeling well
-Lucy Gray crying and mourning when Dill died (Wovey in the book)
-Lucy Gray making sure Jessup ate despite her having the advantage if he didn't eat
-The first thing Lucy Gray doing in the arena was look for Jessup and run away with him so they could both have a chance at surviving, despite all the murder and chaos happening around them
-Lucy Gray comforting Jessup as he was dying
-Lucy Gray in general
-Jessup protecting Lucy Gray from the bats (rabid raccoons in the book)
-Reaper giving Lamina cloth and Lamina giving him food. Then Coral, Mizzen, and Tanner came and she warned him (in the book)
-Reaper collecting the bodies of the fallen tributes and covering them with the flag to give them proper respects
-Reaper warning Wovey when she was walking to the snakes
-Lamina killing Marcus. Ik it was still murder, but it was a mercy kill. She even comforted him before and stared at his body and curled up into the fetal position after
-Lamima has a lot of empathy in general and I love her so much and she's litterally just walking proof of Dr. Gaul's theory being wrong. Her name is litterally animal spelled backwards, which is what Dr. Gaul belived the tributes were. Violent animals
-Bobbin letting Wovey sleep on his shoulder
Tumblr media
-In the walk to the cart, Bobbin was holding Wovey's hand
-Lucy Gray letting Wovey hold her hand before the games
-Treech protecting Lamina when Brandy was killed from the bullet
-Reaper going out of his way to protect Dill. I could make an entire post on this alone. But like, in every scene with them together, he's always looking out for Dill. Even when he jumped at his Mentor, he was looking at Dill before to see how she was doing. Dill's death is what made him want to honor the other tributes deaths. I can only imagine how that made their friends and families feel at home, to see the person they loved getting the respect they could in such violent games
-During the bombing, Marcus ran back to go get Lucy Gray despite thst fact that his chances of dying there were very high
-Ik he wasn't part of the games, but Sejanus going to spread bread around Marcus's dead body (I love Sejanus sm and I better not see y'all thirst over Snow anymore)
-In the book, there was no bloodbath scene. Most tributes ran straight for the tunnels, while Coral, Tanner, and Reaper went to get weapons, but even Coral, who was known for being violent, ran. Only Reaper stayed
-Reaper apologizing for having to kill the tributes the night before, and promising to honor them
-In the book, Teslee was running from the snakes and Lucy Gray came out of the tunnels singing so the snakes would be distracted so Teslee would have time to escape
-Screaming and crying and throwing up because Reaper killed Teslee but brought her body over to the other bodies because it's really all he could give her
-In the book, Lucy Gray and Reaper were the last ones left, and they procrastinated on killing each other. Lucy Gray killed him by getting him to drink poisoned water, not by any violence. She even closed his eyes when she realized he had died.
This was just the 10th Hunger Games. Damn. Imma go on to the other ones now
-Instead of of breaking their alliance by killing each other, Maysilee just left Haymitch saying that she didn't want it to come down to the two of them
-Haymitch staying with Maysilee as she died
-When Annie's district partner died, she gained serious PTSD, which should be proof enough that naturally, HUMANS DONT LIKE VIOLENCE
-Katniss volunteering to protect Prim
-Thresh smiling at Rue when she managed to steal the knife from Cato (this is so sweet to me, I love the District 11 kids sm)
Tumblr media
-Foxface not killing anyone (that Katniss knows of) and running away, proving thst people are just trying to survive and not be violent
-Foxface and Katniss bumping into each other but then running away. Especially Katniss, because she definitely had the advantage
-Peeta joining the careers to protect Katniss
-Peeta telling Katniss to run when the careers were hunting her
-This wasn't shown to the audience, but Katniss said that if her and Rue were the last 2 left, she'd let Rue win
-Katniss letting Rue cuddle under the sleeping bag so that she could stay warm
-Katniss mourning the death of Rue by leaving flowers over her body and then giving respects to District 11. She even cried and threw her spear when Rue died
-Clove and Cato's entire friendship (also, Clove smiling at Cato while they were on the plane)
-Thresh killing Clove purely because of what he thought she did to Rue, implying that he wanted to protect Rue. (I like to believe that he didn't make an alliance with Rue the dame reason Katniss didn't make an alliance with Peeta in the beginning; he didn't want it to come down to the two of them). Despite that, he was still heartbroken when she died
-Thresh sparing Katniss's life because she was friends with and protected Rue
-Clove calling for Cato when Thresh was threatening her, and Cato coming to help (in the book)
-Cato crying and begging Clove to get up when she was dying
-Katniss mercy killing Cato despite everything (in the movie)
-Katniss and Peeta not wanting to kill each other and deciding to eat the berries together instead
75th Hunger Games
Yes, ik the rebellion. But I'm still counting it.
-Peeta volunteering to avoid having Haymitch go to the games
-Mags volunteering for Annie
-The female morphling (who I headcanoned as her name being Chassis) sacrificing herself to save Peeta
-Peeta staying to comfort Chassis and talking about how pretty the sky was
-Chassis and Autus (male morphling) teaching Katniss how to camouflage, despite her not knowing about the rebellion, and for all they know, she could try and kill them. But they still wanted to save everyone, so they kept Katniss alive
-MAGS. Mags is the best
-Finnick staying with and protecting Mags despite her chances of surviving being very low
-Katniss keeping Finnick alive, despite not knowing about the rebellion
-Peeta staying to comfort Katniss and Finnick during the jabberjay attacks

The Feral One • Chapter 9
Finnick x Y/N
Series Masterlist Link
Y’all are gonna like this one (I hope)
Content Warnings - Violence, injury, suicidal thoughts
Tumblr media
Beetee’s plan seems complicated, but it might work. The group is slightly hesitant, but we’re all willing to give it a try at least. What’s the worst that can happen?
The six of you hike up to the lightning tree so Beetee can inspect it. Your bite is getting worse but you don’t want to alarm Finnick, he has enough to worry about.
You sit down while the group splits up to do various tasks like gathering food and water. Watching them all work, you wonder what their lives are like in their districts. You remember visiting them on your tour, but that feels like a lifetime ago.
“How’s the arm?” Peeta asks as he comes to sit by you. He makes sure to keep his distance, though, and you can see his hands in his lap.
You shake your head no in response. It’s definitely bad. Although the salt water cleaned it out, it stings like a bitch and it’s still bleeding. The bandage has slowed it down immensely but you need stitches.
“Can Katniss come look at it?” he asks. “She’s good at healing and we won’t touch you.”
You nod and he goes to get Katniss.
She takes one look at it and agrees it needs stitches. She tries to ask if you have any sponsors but you shake your head no. She must get the message pretty quickly that you don’t have any. The capital hates you.
“Hey Haymitch!” she says towards the sky. “We could really use some supplies!”
You shake your head no at her, as if to say that she doesn’t have to do that for you but she shakes her head back.
“You helped me in the water,” she replies. “The least I can do is try to help you.”
You give her a small smile just as a parachute appears. Her sponsors won’t be happy about this one.
“Hey,” Finnick says as he approaches with Beetee and Johanna, eager to see what was sent.
“She needs stitches,” Katniss states as she opens the parachute. “Haymitch sent stuff.”
“Thank you,” Finnick says, eternally grateful that Katniss was willing to sacrifice potential sponsors to help Y/N.
“How are we going to give them to her?” Johanna asks. “We don’t have sedative.”
The group looks at each other, realizing that giving you stitches may be a dangerous task.
“I’ll hold her,” Finnick states. “Can you do the stitches Katniss?”
She hesitantly nods and Finnick approaches you.
“Hey,” he calmly says as he sits down next to you. “It’s going to hurt and we’re going to have to touch you, but it’s going to be ok. I’ll be right here the whole time.”
You nod at him, tears already forming in your eyes at the thought of what’s about to happen.
“Lay down and put your arm out,” he instructs and you do exactly that.
Finnick lays down next to you on the dirt, positioning himself between you and Katniss but still allowing her access to your wrist. The rest of the group backs up and readies their weapons in case something were to go awry.
“I’m going to hold you, ok?” Finnick explains. “You need to be still for Katniss.”
You nod and he wraps his arms around you, positioning your head against his chest so you can hear his heartbeat.
You’re already shaking and crying and Katniss hasn’t even started. You have to remind yourself that Finnick is holding you to protect you, not to hurt you and he wouldn’t let Katniss hurt you.
The pain and discomfort you feel is so bad you black out, needing an escape from reality. In some ways that’s better than trying to attack everyone around you, but in Finnick’s mind that means there’s something very wrong.
“She’s lost too much blood,” he states. “We will need to carry her back down to the beach and back up again tonight.”
“Not it!” Johanna calls and Finnick glares at her.
“I’ll go get her water,” Peeta states.
“The bleeding should stop now as long as her stitches stay intact,” Katniss states, putting away the supplies. “Luckily I don’t think it’s infected. Can we cut away her other sleeve and wash it down in the lake so she can have a clean bandage to protect the stitches?”
Finnick nods in response and Peeta returns with the water. The boys get you into a sitting position and slowly give you the water, not wanting you to choke on the liquid.
“I don’t want to be carrying her when she wakes up,” Finnick states. “Beetee, how much time do we have before we need to move?”
“Based on my estimates we can’t wait,” Beetee sighs. “We need to move now.”
“Peeta walk behind me,” Finnick states. “If she wakes up I may need you as backup.”
“Why me?” he asks.
“You’re the strongest one,” Finnick states. “If she starts to lose it then put her in a headlock. We will need to make her pass out if she can’t calm down.”
Peeta nods and the group takes off back towards the beach, hoping that you wouldn’t wake up soon.
They were close to the beach when you woke up, but not there yet. Finnick had you over his shoulder and was hiking down the he slope with the group. Your brain had enough. He wasn’t a safe person anymore.
You bring your knee to his stomach, catching him off guard. He doesn’t drop you so you’re able to swing around and grab a hold of his neck, wrapping your arms tightly around it. You must still be weak from the blood loss though, as he’s able to force your arms away from his throat and pin you to the ground.
“Calm down,” he states as you lay panting under him. He’s straddling you with his legs pinning yours down and he’s holding your hands above your head with one of his.
“It’s just me,” he reminds you. “You’re fine. Nobody here is going to hurt you. You lost a lot of blood and passed out. I have to carry you to the beach.”
You think he’s safe, but you aren’t sure. Looking around for a weapon, you spot Katniss with her bow aimed at you, ready to shoot.
This causes you to burst into tears and mutter apologies to Finnick. You didn’t mean to hurt him. You didn’t mean to hurt anyone.
He goes to get off of you, but hesitates when you still look like you might punch him.
“You guys keep going,” he tells the group. “We’ll meet you down there when she’s cooled off.”
The group leaves and you lay there with Finnick still holding you to the ground. He can’t release you until he knows you won’t attack anyone. He could easily fight you off but he’s worried about hurting you in the process.
“Just kill me,” you tell him. “Please.”
Now he looks like he’s going to cry.
“I can’t,” he responds. “I’m sorry.”

Everlark (Catching Fire, Ch. 26-27)
katniss is the one to initiate the kiss with peeta before they split up. no mention of acting for the cameras because of course we're way past that now
katniss suffering, with a chunk missing from her arm, and she's still determined to try save peeta
the fact that their last moments before they're split up/the hijacking, they're calling/screaming out for each other. ugh.
"i can't reach peeta. i can't even reach my pearl" are there posts/analysis about why specifically katniss becomes so fixed on this pearl as her tether to peeta? is it just because he gave it to her?
thinking about how when katniss is on the hovercraft, she's like 'since i couldn't save him i have to kill him to save him from the capitol' but then in mockingjay when she finds out he's alive she's sooo happy that he's alive that it overrides her fear of him being in the capitol
confirmation that everyone kept peeta alive just so katniss didn't go off the deep end
she loves him so much you guys. like he's all she thinks about.
"what i want... what i want is to have him back" the simplicity of this kills me. it's almost childlike in the way it's said. she doesn't actually want him dead, she just wants him back beside her and if that doesn't just rip your heart out
"he's so strong and such a good liar" so katniss does see his possible toxic traits, she just chooses to pay them no mind because she's obsessed with him
"i give up. stop speaking, responding, refuse food and water. they can pump whatever they want into my arm, but it takes more than that to keep a person going once she's lost the will to live" in the beginning of the first book, we see katniss who has decided to live a life restricting her emotions and wholly focused on survival really be quite harsh to her mother's condition after her father died and here we see her go through it herself. she opened herself up to love to the point that damage like this to it means she is broken by it. she is grieving him, the same way we see her grieve prim at the end of mockingjay. (only there's something she senses she's waiting on even then). she's so desperate she thinks maybe if she dies, she can still save peeta because he might be released
"i put what was precious in haymitch's hands. and he has betrayed me" PRECIOUS. if this doesn't tell you he's become her whole world in the best way. this boy she's tried to convince us and herself for so long is just a friend, just an ally, just some guy... he is what is precious. cry

Peeta’s and Katniss’ roles reversed in Mockingjay
I just got to ramble, because I have this idea for a canon divergent Peeta POV fic, where he is the one who gets rescued from the Rebels and Katniss is taking to the Captiol. I saw some posts about this, and it’s also meantioned in the books, when Haymitch says something like “He wouldn’t treat you like this, if you were the one being hijacked” (I can’t quote the actual line, because I just have a translation of THG at hand, but if anyone can add this part, I would be very grateful).
And this got me thinking about, how the hijacking took the one thing about Peeta, that was very exceptional in this world, which was his kindness. Everybody said, they couldn’t believe, how cruel Peeta was to Katniss. That was very much unlike him, like they just ripped out a huge part of his identity. yes, but also... His benefit to the cause of the rebels. He was pretty much useless in district 13 and he was a risk to be with 451. Truth to be told, he held them back a lot, which was okay, because the squad was willing to do the extra work, but well, it played into the Capitols hand, right? He would get rid of Katniss for them.
Now we turn this thought around. How could they hijack Katniss, without killing her, to diminish the Rebel’s cause? They wouldn’t turn her more violent. At least, that’s not what I was thinking. Because they would make her just a more useful weapon for Coin if she was mentally unstable and violent. Also at this point they wanted to discredit the star-crossed lovers, who basically pulled the trigger on the whole rebellion thing. Side thought: Snow saw something in the third quarter quell, that was real and not just for the cameras. He recognized how deeply they loved each other and he wanted to destroy their bond, because any form of alliance is weakening his powers, this bond in particular.
So they want to tear the star-crossed lovers apart, because Victors are important figures in this propaganda war and people look up to them, and also make Katniss useless for the cause. Not only in a way, she couldn’t be used for propos anymore, but actually keep her away from the whole fight.
For that to happen they need to take one thing from her: her fire. Her braveness to help those in need. Her survivial instinct. And Katniss was always willing to fight for something, somebody else. Rarely ever for herself. She was thinking about winning for Prim’s sake not her own, among other stuff. And she was able to keep going, because she always had somebody who would ground her.
Well, I’m trying to say. They would hijack her in a way, she would not be brave and selfless, but terrified and scared without any connection to those around her. They would make her see Peeta as a monster, a mutt, but not something she can destroy and overcome, but something that’s almighty. Like Peeta is not the one person she can trust, but the one person she can never defeat.
Just imagine this from Peeta’s POV. Him seeing her in person after months, and instead of the hug or something he expected, she starts crying and hiding, begging him to spare her. Because in her eyes she is seeing something so cruel and horrifiying, she doesn’t even put up a fight.
And she would be to afraid to pick up any kind of weapon. She would be useless for propos and she coulnd’t heal for a long time, because the only person who could help her with her mental state is the same one who can’t go near her.

Note
Sometimes I cry because I remember that when there was the slightest hope of real Peeta being back, Katniss changed her behavior and started trying to help.
Ugh Non this part of their story is sooooo incredibly painful, and also, as much as it pains me to think of how Katniss reacted, that her way of dealing with this wasn't based on the way she "should have" reacted, but the very hurt, human response we got instead.
I don't have a copy of MJ on me to verify this, but I don't necessarily think it was hope of getting Peeta back that changed her. Peeta was improving, from his frosting skills to the updates she was getting from his team, but she went on her suicide mission in the Capitol anyway. She thought he would continue to be raging mad and didn't want to live in that world. And he doesn't really do anything to warrant there being hope he could come back to her initially.
What changes Katniss's behavior is, yes, partly Haymitch's lecture, but also Peeta sharing what the hijacking did to him. She thinks about how terrifying it would be to not know who was safe, to not know that she loved Prim, and it's that compassion for him in this situation that prompted her to share with him what she knew about who he had been before. When she set her pain aside and allowed even a little vulnerability, Peeta responded to her and their relationship started to heal.
Compassion. Compassion, compassion, compassion, that's what the whole series is about.

Hmmm I’m bored and I’m a sucker for parallels and first and lasts so I did a collection of first and last moments for every major relationship Katniss had throughout the series. 🤍🤍🤍
-
Peeta
The mayor finishes the dreary Treaty of Treason and motions for Peeta and me to shake hands. His are as solid and warm as those loaves of bread. Peeta looks me right in the eye and gives my hand what I think is meant to be a reassuring squeeze. Maybe it’s just a nervous spasm.
We turn back to face the crowd as the anthem of Panem plays.
Oh, well, I think. There will be twenty-four of us. Odds are someone else will kill him before I do.
/
Peeta and I grow back together. There are still moments when he clutches the back of a chair and hangs on until the flashbacks are over. I wake screaming from nightmares of mutts and lost children. But his arms are there to comfort me. And eventually his lips. On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that.
So after, when he whispers, “You love me. Real or not real?”
I tell him, “Real.”
-
Haymitch
Now I am truly in danger of crying, but fortunately Haymitch chooses this time to come staggering across the stage to congratulate me. “Look at her. Look at this one!” he hollers, throwing an arm around my shoulders. He’s surprisingly strong for such a wreck. “I like her!” His breath reeks of liquor and it’s been a long time since he’s bathed. “Lots of . . . ” He can’t think of the word for a while. “Spunk!” he says triumphantly. “More than you!” he releases me and starts for the front of the stage. “More than you!” he shouts, pointing directly into a camera.
Is he addressing the audience or is he so drunk he might actually be taunting the Capitol? I’ll never know because just as he’s opening his mouth to continue, Haymitch plummets off the stage and knocks himself unconscious.
He’s disgusting, but I’m grateful. With every camera gleefully trained on him, I have just enough time to release the small, choked sound in my throat and compose myself.
/
Like a good mentor, Haymitch makes me eat a sandwich and then pretends he believes I’m asleep for the rest of the trip. He busies himself going through every compartment on the hovercraft, finding the liquor, and stowing it in his bag. It’s night when we land on the green of the Victor’s Village. Half of the houses have lights in the windows, including Haymitch’s and mine. Not Peeta’s. Someone has built a fire in my kitchen. I sit in the rocker before it, clutching my mother’s letter.
“Well, see you tomorrow,” says Haymitch.
As the clinking of his bag of liquor bottles fades away, I whisper, “I doubt it.”
-
Gale
In the woods waits the only person with whom I can be myself. Gale. I can feel the muscles in my face relaxing, my pace quickening as I climb the hills to our place, a rock ledge overlooking a valley. A thicket of berry “bushes protects it from unwanted eyes. The sight of him waiting there brings on a smile. Gale says I never smile except in the woods.
“Hey, Catnip,” says Gale. My real name is Katniss, but when I first told him, I had barely whispered it. So he thought I’d said Catnip.
/
We stand there, face-to-face, not meeting each other’s eyes. “You didn’t come see me in the hospital.” He doesn’t answer, so finally I just say it. “Was it your bomb?”
“I don’t know. Neither does Beetee,” he says. “Does it matter? You’ll always be thinking about it.”
He waits for me to deny it; I want to deny it, but it’s true. Even now I can see the flash that ignites her, feel the heat of the flames. And I will never be able to separate that moment from Gale. My silence is my answer.
“That was the one thing I had going for me. Taking care of your family,” he says. “Shoot straight, okay?” He touches my cheek and leaves.
-
Finnick
The crunching hits my ear before I even know he’s beside me, and when I turn my head, Finnick Odair’s famous sea green eyes “are only inches from mine. He pops a sugar cube in his mouth and leans against my horse.
“Hello, Katniss,” he says, as if we’ve known each other for years, when in fact we’ve never met.
“Hello, Finnick,” I say, just as casually, although I’m feeling uncomfortable at his closeness, especially since he’s got so much bare skin exposed.
“Want a sugar cube?” he says, offering his hand, which is piled high. “They’re supposed to be for the horses, but who cares? They’ve got years to eat sugar, whereas you and I . . . well, if we see something sweet, we better grab it quick.”
/
Far below, I can just make out Finnick, struggling to hang on as three mutts tear at him. As one yanks back his head to take the death bite, something bizarre happens. It’s as if I’m Finnick, watching images of my life flash by. The mast of a boat, a silver parachute, Mags laughing, a pink sky, Beetee’s trident, Annie in her wedding dress, waves breaking over rocks. Then it’s over.
-
Johanna
Johanna Mason. […] She ruffles up her spiky hair and rolls her wide-set brown eyes. “Isn’t my costume awful? My stylist’s the biggest idiot in the Capitol. Our tributes have been trees for forty years under her. Wish I’d gotten Cinna. You look fantastic.”
Girl talk. That thing I’ve always been so bad at. Opinions on clothes, hair, makeup. So I lie. “Yeah, he’s been helping me design my own clothing line. You should see what he can do with velvet.” Velvet. The only fabric I could think of off the top of my head.
“I have. On your tour. That strapless number you wore in District Two? The deep blue one with the diamonds? So gorgeous I wanted to reach through the screen and tear it right off your back,” says Johanna.
I bet you did, I think. With a few inches of my flesh.
/
“I made it for you. Something to put in your drawer.” I place it in her hands. “Smell it.”
She lifts the bundle to her nose and takes a tentative sniff. “Smells like home.” Tears flood her eyes.
“That’s what I was hoping. You being from Seven and all,” I say. “Remember when we met? You were a tree. Well, briefly.”
Suddenly, she has my wrist in an iron grip. “You have to kill him, Katniss.”
“Don’t worry.” I resist the temptation to wrench my arm free.
“Swear it. On something you care about,” she hisses.
“I swear it. On my life.” But she doesn’t let go of my arm.
“On your family’s life,” she insists.
“On my family’s life,” I repeat. I guess my concern for my own survival isn’t compelling enough. She lets go and I rub my wrist. “Why do you think I’m going, anyway, brainless?”
That makes her smile a little. “I just needed to hear it.” She presses the bundle of pine needles to her nose and closes her eyes.
-
Prim
“You look beautiful,” says Prim in a hushed voice.
“And nothing like myself,” I say. I hug her, because I know these next few hours will be terrible for her. Her first reaping. She’s about as safe as you can get, since she’s only entered once. I wouldn’t let her take out any tesserae. But she’s worried about me. That the unthinkable might happen.
I protect Prim in every way I can, but I’m powerless against the reaping. The anguish I always feel when she’s in pain wells up in my chest and threatens to register on my face. I notice her blouse has pulled out of her skirt in the back again and force myself to stay calm. “Tuck your tail in, little duck,” I say, smoothing the blouse back in place.
Prim giggles and gives me a small “Quack.”
“Quack yourself,” I say with a light laugh. The kind only Prim can draw out of me.
/
First I get a glimpse of the blond braid down her back. Then, as she yanks off her coat to cover a wailing child, I notice the duck tail formed by her untucked shirt. I have the same reaction I did the day Effie Trinket called her name at the reaping. At least, I must go limp, because I find myself at the base of the flagpole, unable to account for the last few seconds. Then I am pushing through the crowd, just as I did before. Trying to shout her name above the roar. I’m almost there, almost to the barricade, when I think she hears me. Because for just a moment, she catches sight of me, her lips form my name.
And that’s when the rest of the parachutes go off.
/
The small white bird tinged in pink dives down, buries her claws in my chest, and tries to keep me afloat. “No, Katniss! No! You can’t go!”
But the ones I hated are winning, and if she clings to me, she’ll be lost as well. “Prim, let go!” And finally she does.
