Before the Hedge Jumper retires for good, I’d like to give it one last moment in the sun, so here’s a few glimpses from the drawing process during March of 2018. Once it’s sold out, Hedge Jumper will enter into the printshop archives. There are still a handful up for grabs! 🌿 The Hedge Jumper is an illustration that captures the energy of the hedge witch as she walks between worlds and communes with the wise spirits of the unknown. From her right hand sprout plants that cleanse and protect-- Rosemary, Black Cohosh, Motherwort, Garlic, Hawthorn, and St. John's Wort. From her left grow plants that will aid her intuition and psychic abilities-- Peppermint, Mugwort, Dandelion, Yarrow, Jasmine, Cinquefoil, and Mullein. Beneath her unfurl the saturnine plants of the underworld, the poisonous "witches' weeds" found in the infamous flying ointments-- Foxglove, Datura, Henbane, Mandrake, Aconite, and Poppy. Although benevolent, the hedge witch knows that to understand the whole of spiritual wisdom she must possess a thorough knowledge of flora both healing and baneful. With this keen awareness, she reveres the green realm and submits her open mind as a receptive offering in exchange for the invaluable wisdom of the unknown worlds. Blessed by divine spirits, her animal familiar, the snake, encircles her as an act of mutual respect, symbolizing illumination, protection, and wholeness as she embraces the natural cycle of the earth. With her ability to touch all worlds and the natural energy of her trance-like state, The Hedge Jumper is a visual spell for personal power and the act of embracing all the worlds within yourself, both light and dark. Just read Bennet Turns into a Cat by Ireen Chau, and those 120 pages made me nearly cry. Everyone needs to go and immediately read The Witches of Olderlea series, because they're the cutest comfort books, but they also address some harder topics like difficult parent relationships and insecurity. She's an artist as well so all the hard copies have the most beautiful illustrations. I would actually die to make sure Narcissa and Bennet have the happy ending they deserve.

3. New release you haven't read yet but want to - Finally got The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill from the library! So will hopefully read it soon.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year - NEW MURDERBOT!! Ahem, that is, System Collapse by Martha Wells!

5. Biggest disappointment - I am struggling through Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void by Tim Lebbon. I want to like it so much more than I currently am :(( I also had a really hard time getting through Gilded by Marissa Meyer which made me really sad :((

6. Biggest surprise - Enter the Body by Joy McCullough

7. Favorite new author - Not a new to me author but I am finally reading more of Diana Wynne Jones outside of rereading Howl's Moving Castle again and again and I adore her work. I also want to read H.G. Parry's and Emily Tesh's other works as well, as I feel they could both become a favorite.

8. Newest fictional crush - I don't develop crushes easily, but I may have a light crush on Smertae from Toil and Trouble by Mairghread Scott and Kelly Matthews

9. Newest favorite character - Rowan from The Magician's Daughter. Could also maybe put him under the light crush list I suppose. I love a good disaster magic user 😅

10. Book that made you cry - The Magician's Daughter got me choked up really unexpectedly. Also I don't think I cried, but Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin was oof, what a devastating punch in the gut.

11. A book that made you happy - Greymist Fair by Francesca Zappia was SUCH a delightful retelling of several fairy tales that never get retold and that made me incredibly happy.

12. Favorite adaptation - Re: Dracula is a fully acted audio drama of Dracula in the style of Dracula Daily, and it is SO GOOD.

13. Prettiest cover - The Herbwitch Princess by Ireen Chau is just gorgeous.

14. A book you need to read by the end of the year - This WILL be the year I read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I SWEAR. Also will read Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir but I keep waiting to see if there's a release date for Alecto yet 😅

Jason had been dead for twenty-four hours before he was eating breakfast with gods and goddesses, before he had weapons training with a demigod at the hands of his goddess grandmother.  He had been dead forty-eight hours before he was promptly dropped into his first therapy session by that same celestial grandmother, who bound him to a chair and told him to talk with the good doctor. (the therapist in question was a herbwitch and grandmother from the Etruscan period.  she was great to talk to, and Jason learnt some new (ancient) recipes that helped steady his hands and his thoughts while he told Semni his life story, and they eeked out his most recent aches and hurts.) Laverna alternates days of training with days for therapy or relaxation.  She teaches him spear, dagger and sword as she promised, and introduces him to the souls of one of her oldest children (from a time where there was more than male and female, and thus this ancient relative is both and neither) who teaches Jason the bow.

The lemon balm is already taking over the east garden so I’m harvesting lots of it this morning. For yarrow, sage, mugwort, skullcap and many other herbs, I like to wait until they flower before harvesting. Their essential oils and chemical constituents are peak during flowering, but lemon balm is such a massive grower that it takes over everything if I don’t continuously cut her back during spring and summer. Lemon balm is an excellent nervine, gently soothing the central nervous system, so it’s great for anxiety. It’s also uplifting so it works well for symptoms of depression. It’s also an anti-viral and is effective in healing herpes sores, both genital and oral. I suspect it’s also moderately effective at repelling mosquitoes but I haven’t seen research that proves this. Review:

I have been seeing the gorgeous art for this book series all over the place so I knew I had to pick it up. I absolutory loved the modern take on the classic Cinderella story with a side of mystery. The twists were surprising, the Heroine does a wonderful job with saving herself- with a little bit of help from her friends. The love interest actually has some amazing depth to him that feel is majorly lacking in this genre. He actually felt like a real human, instead of some man just there to swoop away the MC.

My only minor thing is there is a couple of plot holes around, and I think that because of the mystery element that was added. There was not enough though to disinterest/confuse the plot. Also the pacing is perfect, not to slow not to fast.

If you like a classic mystery with a sprinkle of magic wrapped up into a fairytale retelling, I think you would enjoy this book.
