CAN ANYONE HELP ME MAKE A COMPREHENSIBE LIST OF THE VARIOUS NONHUMAN MUMBO VARIETIES

We're sure we don't have a comprehensive list either - as with many things fandom, there are probably almost as many options as there are fans! But here's a list of some we've talked about or heard of:

Vampire - a classic at this point, popularized around late season 6 and again throughout season 8

"Shapeshifter" - often seen as being its own "species" of sorts, similar to being a fae or elf or something. (ed.: Mod Leo's favorite interpretation of this makes Mumbo similar to the Pokemon Ditto, in particular the beady eyes and inability to change its face.) Sometimes this is flavoured using S8 lore that he consumes things to transform.

Robot - it seems like most redstoners get robot-ified at some point or another :P

Parrot - mostly a one-off idea that we posted here! Not seen it used elsewhere.

Watcher - same as above.

Moth - not incredibly common, but used by a few artists in the fandom over time!

Enderman - tol and funky. (I use this as my main headcanon - 🦆🦆)

Skulk'd - not seen a lot but definitely floated around at some point. People used to think the Warden mouth looked like Mumbo's mustache and would make him a Warden.

Demon - similar to above. He appears to be summonable.

what color/color schemes would you assign to these two, both individually but also as a unit?

for joel i’m thinking soft pinks and more saturated deeper greens, with a lil bit of sky blue thrown in there, but for etho i’m a lil stumped. i’ve just recently started actually watching etho’s povs and hes so fun, but i dont think i have watched enough of him to get a read on what colors his vibes give off. my brain goes to some desaturated reds(like red terracotta!!) and oranges, but idk if thats quite right loll

as for the two of them together, it rly depends on what tango’s color scheme ends up being imo. i know i want it to be a combo of the two individual color schemes, and for joel i deff want his portion of the duo’s scheme to be green.

(im not talking about the colors of their builds or anything btw!! but the colors their vibes in their videos give off!!!!!)

Today I present you : The ACCIDENTAL WATCHERIFICATION OF GRIAN au

Aka I’m going back to a beloved trope of mine, accidental deitification but I slap it on my current interest, Hermitcraft.

SO !

We all know the “Grian is a Watcher” AU (well, lots of us do know it, it’s a pretty famous fanon grian thing, be it in fanfics or fanart and such).

Most of the time I see it, it’s a “Grian was a normal player, but got yoinked in Evo by the (evil/neutral/benevolant, choose your favorite flavor) Watchers tm. They (tried to/did) turn him into one. Sometimes he has to escape because they’re Bad, sometimes they’re just annoying. He gets cool powers and eyes, wings sometimes and Purple.”

This is a classic. BUT ! What I am suggesting now is something I haven’t really seen before, which is a shame bc it’s ; interesting, funny imo, and also meta. (If it exists, I missed it oopsies sorry lmao)

What if Grian, after Evo, did NOT become a Watcher bc he got turned into one by them. In fact, the existance of Watchers is debatable here. He might never have actually met one, and their exact role/meaning doesn’t really matter. They might even not exist ! That’s up to you.

Grian, is an avian/shapeshifter whatever, living now on Hermitcraft. He does his little videos, streams, whatever you want to make him a somewhat public figure (like Hermits often are in the mcyt multiverse). What matters is that for SOME reason, people BELIEVE he is a Watcher HIDDING HIS TRUE SELF. And BECAUSE OF THEIR BELIEF he gradually actually BECOMES ONE.

The more he tries to protest, convince them it's not the case, the more they think they're right, and the worse it get (like, he starts to physically manifest Watcher traits (preconceived ones, THE EXISTENCE OF WATCHERS AND WHAT THEY ARE EXACTLY/MEAN BARELY IMPACTS IT, bc his transformation, DEIFICATION is all hinged on players’ belief. Not actual facts.) Anyways, man starts to get the “typical” (aka stereotypical) Watchers traits as times goes on, which only make things worse because SEE SEE, he has the eyes and the purple, clearly they were right !

It would be both a comedy of errors, misunderstandings, coincidences AND some good old horror (body and other kinds), bc Grian DID NOT sign up for this.

Also this is funnily meta because he gets turned into a Watcher by the true watchers, who most of the time don’t realise who/what they are, and the power they hold. It’s a bit of a self-fulfiling prophecy, you see. And Grian is the unwilling puppet dancing to the whims of forces he cannot control.

I gotta write a fic about this, this is a really neat concept. Comedy and horror my beloveds, especially when they go hand in hand.

This was not supposed to be a meta concept. This was supposed to be a funny “ahah, he got turned into a watcher because of a misunderstanding and the power of belief”. I actually have a fic more or less based on that kind of idea in another fandom, bc I was part of a whole ass event where we used that kind of concept.

I looove the "beliefs of others influence what/who your are" tropes, be it in the positive, negative, literal or not way Shoutout to my fav fanfic of a long long time for having introduced me to that concept (not a HC one, it’s Make a Wish, a HP fic on ffnet from the early 2000s lmao, truly a classic) Pls interact about this, brain is going brrrr and I needed to share it.

(Also this came to be after reading a few fics where someone on HC worships Xelqua/Grian, who is like pls stop I don’t wanna hear your prayers wtf. I thought it’d be funny if they did pray to Xelqua but Grian wasn’t actually a Watcher. And then the potential of The Power of Belief tm hit me like a brick and here we are.)

what if bdubs always sleeps not because he likes the sun - but because he's actually a phantom in human form? he doesn't want to hurt his friends, so he avoids nighttime and being in that cursed form as much as possible. it's not that he dislikes being a phantom, it comes with a lot of perks, but he dislikes haunting other players like some kind of vampire thirsty for blood.

and with no offence to tango, that guy has some absolutely stunning eyes that can make you dream of your childhood while hes suckling on some pig blood packs. freshly supplied from the server's butcher - a certain blue slime - because most hybrid blood tastes ickier than magma cream.

on topic, jevin has been awfully quiet ever since gem pointed out in the last server meeting that slimes and snails have more in common than being slimy - being intersex. now confused with this newly discovered interest in hybrid intimate parts, he goes around and asks everyone if they can show him their genitals. hm. you can guess yourself how that will end.

xisuma on the other hand is very very busy not only refining his skull base, but also making modifications to the one on his head. the voidwalker has been getting plagued with constant headaches from his newest frontal bone being screwed together incorrectly. and since not many people have knowledge on voidwalker anatomy, he tends to go to the one and only other one he knows of - etho, who gladly takes time to get the finicky metal bits to stick to bone without ruining that genuis head of their admin.

and oh dear joe, the guy who appears and disappears as they please in that moment. don't worry too much about what exactly they are. nobody knows. many suspect that underneath that well maintained skin hides nothing more than a swarm of stupid damselflies trying to impersonate a cat, which would explain an awful lot about joe. but as mentioned, nobody knows. cleo questions if joe themself even know what in the world they are.

Ren the Cyberdog

You know that accident that nearly killed Ren at the end of s7, where he fell into his own lava river (I think)? Where he had to get some janky-looking cybernetics from Renbob that may or may not have been made of random junk/spare parts laying around the RV? Let's talk about that.

The rules of when respawn does and doesn't work are... shaky, in my thoughts. (in my fics I get a lot of mileage out of situations where the characters are unsure whether respawn is working right or not.) Either due to a glitch, or because Ren was lingering for so long at the end of HC-7's inhabitation, respawn wasn't working for him. So, he had to get rescued, and patched up, and has now been permanently altered in the ambiguous eyes of The Universe.

What cybernetics does he have? His right arm at the elbow, and right leg at the knee; some grafted patches on the left side of his chest and leg; maybe one or both eyes (haven't decided on that yet); and, arguably most importantly, an artificial heart/pacemaker in his chest. He would have died without these augments.

Throughout his time on HC-8, Ren's cybernetics remained janky as hell. Stubbornness? Not having the time? Too much interruption by manic voices in his and Doc's heads? It doesn't really matter. The jank is why Ren always looked so pale and about a step away from death all season.

When they finally left HC-8 - once again rescued by Renbob - Bob knew a guy, who knew another guy, who could do proper cybernetic work. (Doc, somehow, had no idea who this contact was, despite having run in those circles for quite some time.) Ren's slapdash spare parts were swapped out for real, modern tech. He was given the option to show it off, like Doc, but Doc mostly has his tech exposed for maintenance and intimidation purposes, and Ren is not the intimidation sort. So he picked the cosmetic option to hide whatever wasn't under clothing anyway. Many people outside Hermitcraft don't even know, and can't tell at first glance.

Ren and Doc both encounter cybernetics issues, based on a canon moment where they had just finished a bit of their ARG and returned to Hermitcraft, but kept crashing/disconnecting from the server. (This wasn't even the first time their shenanigans messed them up; the whole "look in this hopper and instantly crash" thing from the chunk of death is something I've decided is cybernetics-related as well!)

i am sick again (i stg its the weather patterns here or smth bc when i lived in a different climate for 4 yrs, I HARDLY EVER GOT SICK!!!! i still mask everywhere !!!! wtf!!!) so naturally i am thinking abt my blorbos…

i havent seen either of their newest episodes of current hc but i have seen a handful of things abt it 💀 oh maaaaaan etho is leaning into the “little shit” part of their dynamic so hard its so funny

it also all has me thinking abt head canons n stuff… so heres some of those heh

-etho comes down w a cold and hes miserable but trying rly hard not to show it, n joel comes in n makes him some food n gets him some warm towels and makes sure he knows hes allowed to take a rest now n then, especially when sick

-etho is not a menthol enjoyer, but joel loves it. he loves vapo rub and menthol cough drops/tea, and it used to make etho nauseous, but he’s slowly beginning to enjoy the smell of it bc it reminds him of joel, but more specifically whiny sick joel who’s very needy

-OH YEAH. joel is so the type to be extra whiny and needy when he’s sick, whereas etho is the opposite. he pretends hes fine until hes literally collapsing lmfao he could have a high grade fever and still insist he can keep working lmfao meanwhile the millisecond joel feels slightly under the weather he’s whining about it and basically throwing himself at etho to take care of him

-i like tho think that gem would stop by with some sick care package stuff if both of them were to get sick, like soup and meds but also comfort stuff as well like snacks, media to watch, maybe a handmade blanket too heh

-etho is immunocompromised teehee so anytime joel gets sick, etho ends up getting sick 2x as hard, thats also why he masks all the time!!!!!!!! but sometimes the sickies r just unavoidable ough

Ethubs spooning/sleeping headcanons:

Bdubs goes to bed early so he's usually asleep when Etho calls it a night. This means Etho gets to decide the cuddle situation.

Etho (like his hopper clock) switches between loving to spoon and hating it. Some nights he will lie on his back, soldier style, far away from the wriggling Bdubs and sleep for 8 hours like a robot recharging.

Then other nights he's scoop up bdubs and be the big spoon.

Bdubs moves a lot in his sleep and it wakes Etho up so usually Etho has him in a manhold-like grip with one leg pinning down both of Bdubs' to stop him kicking. It's partially effective.

On the odd occasion Bdubs and Etho go to bed at the same time Bdubs insists on being the big spoon and rides Etho like a backpack. Even tho Etho is like 'oh no not this again' he adores being held by Bdubs

When big spoon Bdubs will stroke Ethos hair and call him pretty and tries to stay awake until Etho nods off. He likes seeing Etho resting, it's a rare occasion and he does look pretty while doing it.

When Etho is away Bdubs sleeps holding an Etho plushie.

There was one day where Bdubs wasn't in the mood for cuddling (just a bit over stimulated) and didnt ask to backpack Etho. Etho crept out of the house that night and went to iskalls house and cried at him because he assumed Bdubs wanted a divorce (they're not even married). Iskall assured Etho that Bdubs was just having a tough day and offered a cuddle if Etho needed it. Etho politely declined.

When Etho wakes up first he'll make Bdubs latte with a cute heart foam art and leave it on the bed side. (They have a cup heater coaster so it stays warm for ages)

When Bdubs gets up first he makes a six espresso black coffee with two tablespoons of honey/maple syrup and throws a pillow at Etho handing the mug directly to him because Etho likes to drink it while it's scolding hot and will make him feel ALIVE.

I like to think that even though Tubbo is taller than Iskall, he can't actually lift him. So Iskall falling on top of his son at any given point is very much a daily goal for him

I like to assign magic powers to the hermits for fun and I know vex magic Scar is a popular one but my personal favourite for Scar is plant magic. He can make trees grow by touching them. Have beautiful gardens grow in hours. Terraforming god. I guess all the hermits love to build and create but Scar just has a particular way with flora.

Enjoy my take on Scars back. As a Vex hybrid Scar's wings are able to retract when he doesn't want to deal with them or pass more as a regular human. His wings become markings on his back that look somewhat like white inked tattoos or scars. On the back of his neck is a marking that at one point locked his vex abilities but was broken thanks to a well placed arrow.
