Just sharing some information on some of the southern states I have worked on.

I’ll start with Carlisle “Carl” Graves/ South Carolina & Margaret “Maisie” Ferguson / North Carolina. They’re half siblings. Carl’s father is probably some sort of English county personification (most likely Dorset), and his mother is an English woman with some French Huguenot heritage from Barbados who migrated with her family to South Carolina. Given the fact she’s in the tidewater south and given her class, having a kid out of wedlock was taboo so I imagine his father arranged for her to marry a man, who is of a northern English / Scottish background. They end up moving to North Carolina’s back country to be with his family, and have Maisie. In my lore, there is some discrimination, or prejudice especially in this period against personifications born to human parents. I imagine most settler colonial personifications have human parents, but the few that don’t like Carl, that has 1 personification parent, I believe that gives him some social clout. Also I decided to make North Carolina younger because tbph South Carolina was the seat of power and colonial North Carolina didn’t really get going without South Carolina. I also don’t go by earliest permanent settlement for a state-level oc, it doesn’t always make sense to me for a variety of reasons.

Anyways Carl is a bit controlling, and he’s more of a tidewater southerner, and Maisie loves her brother but doesn’t appreciate his controlling behavior. Also one final note on carl, he can come off a bit cold but he’s quite the stereotypical ideal of a southern gentleman. Charming. Polite. Etc. Maisie is more of an Appalachian ngl. I’ll discuss Maisie another time. But Carl’s , and his friend/neighbor, Curtis Bartlett/ Georgia childhood was marked by constant fights with the Spanish and their colonies especially Louisa Flores / Spanish Florida.

Obvs, that isn’t a great situation for a kid to find themselves in, and it does impact Carl’s controlling behavior and also makes him rather jealous of Alfred later. Alfred wasn’t always the US in my lore, and Carl believed that he would’ve been elected/ selected by his peers to represent this new country given Carl’s history and background. Also one other thing is prior to the Revolution, Alfred was not universally liked by his states. Actually he’s never been universally liked by his states lol. Anyways Carl does resent Alfred for a number of years.

I split Florida into two because it didn’t make sense to have 1 continuous Florida given the fact that most Floridanos (the Spanish settlers) leave during Florida’s British colonial period. Louisa ends up having a kid with an Anglo-American settler from the colonial backcountry, this kid is Elena/ Elaine Moore, who comes to represent the US state of Florida. I think Louisa hides the fact that Elaine is her kid for both their sakes since Elaine comes out really pale in comparison. I’ll discuss Elaine more in the future, she is 110% Florida woman tho lol, but sometimes you’ll see me draw her with much lighter skin and that’s cause like if Elaine isn’t going outside and tanning highkey she passes as a white woman.

White passing and its history is something I want to explore more in my lore, but yeah that’s all I’m gonna leave it with the basic info on these southern states. I will say out of all them, Maisie / North Carolina & Carl / South Carolina are major players in my Nor’easter lore lol

What if I showed you guys my Hetalia OCs for the 50 states that I've been working on for the past 2 months?

Delaware:

- Overly stressed all the time, he has a complex where he needs to feel important. So he opts to do work that would normally fall on the other 49 so he can seem important to them.

- He's the busyman of Delmarva, he gets everything squared away.

- He has the biggest, most effective puppy dog eyes in the world. They're just big and sad and it's hard to say no!

Pennsylvania:

- Very active, has a gym in her home for sure even though she prefers to go outside and work out.

- She and Delaware are very close, as the first two states they became good friends (and New Jersey!). She does her best to protect Delaware when she can.

- Very straightforward, she doesn't mess around. You always know what to expect from her.

New Jersey:

- Loud. So very loud. Always wearing gaudy makeup and unappealing clothing.

- She's very loyal as a friend though–her and New York hang out constantly, with half of their time dedicated to debating something or other loud enough for everyone around them to hear.

- She and New York have been in a battle over the ownership of the Statue of Liberty for a long time. Since the statue is technically on an island that belongs to her, but New York will not give it up. She owns the gift shop.

Georgia:

- One of my favorite states, I love her and her design very dearly.

- I like to think of her as a Mary Sue type, where she's always busy and has an overwhelming amount of work to handle, but she does it all so easily and so effectively that you'd never guess how much she does.

- Also, she owns a peach orchid absolutely.

Connecticut:

- "Um, actually—🤓👆" embodied.

- Everyone is sick of how entitled he is, because he acts like he's so much more intelligent than everyone.

- Which is funny because he is really really smart, but still not as smart as he pretends to act.

- He's one of the only states that's friends with Ohio.

Massachusetts:

- Do not utter the word "revolution" around this man or he will go nuts.

- Very quick to act, very quick to anger. He likes to set things on fire—he always carries a lighter on him— and argue. If he ever came face to face with England, it would probably go very badly.

- He despises tea, to the point he physically cannot drink it.

Maryland:

- The mediator of Delmarva, this man is the master of solving problems. He's the sweetest.

- Also, the best chef in the country aside from Louisiana and I cannot stress that enough. You know this man has a BIG kitchen in his house.

South Carolina:

- The bimbo of the country okay.

- I just love the idea of her being so determined to be a farmer, but struggling so much because she's just not designed to be a farmer. But she won't give up even though she probably should.

- She's good friends with Georgia but her and North Carolina definitely have a rivalry going on.

New Hampshire:

- Can this man calm down? Please?

- He basically bounces off the walls, definitely has ADHD, and always down to do somethint stupid.

- He spends a good portion of his time bugging Vermont because she's easy to annoy. New Hampshire and Vermont are very close though. The siblings ever.

Virginia:

- I had to make one of them emo okay.

- She's the confident leader of Delmarva for sure. As the first state colonized, she's got a good heart for leadership. She's the state that works the closest with America directly.

- Despite being emo, she's very sweet.

We have 128 phenomenal contestants, and several shitty ones that were abandoned on the spreadsheet. Some were rejected for good reasons: Freddie Mercury isn’t a girl, Princess Di died too recently, and Trish is from one lady’s single Tiktok. Some were rejected for petty and foolish reasons, such as “I don’t like Hetalia” and “I don’t like early 2000s movies.”

Under the cut is all the match-ups in plain text for those of you who with to ctrl+F for their girlboss. If your own girlboss didn’t make it in, feel free to send in asks about how I’m a fool for running this poll without including your rejected babygirl.

Additionally, feel free to peruse the original spreadsheet to see everyone who didn’t make it in. It is organized in no way shape or form besides the occasional collating of characters who had multiple submissions (notably, Vriska).

If there’s anything I should know about any of the accepted girlbosses (”The person who played this girlboss is currently being prosecuted for murder in North Carolina” or other similar aspects of despicability that should get them disqualified) please inform me off-anon, with evidence. While some of these girlbosses are literal murderers, those who have shed human blood are either fictional or have been dead for over a century, but I don’t want any current murderers around. I want everyone on tumblr to be able to enjoy this tournament if possible.

I tend to like OCs more if it's from a creator I already like. I have trouble getting invested in a whole ass new character, but if I like how an artist or writer interprets one of my blorbos, I'm more likely to enjoy their OCs too. But even then, if it's states, province, city OCs, I probably won't care as much than if it's a country OC, and I usually immediately lose interest if it's an OC for an imaginary country except for very few exceptions. Like a Genovia OC in a Princess Diaries crossover my friend did years ago, but also this was a friend, I probably wouldn't have read about it if it was a stranger's OC.

I agree like I enjoy seeing nations that Himaruya just forgets exists or something. I need central Asia so badly (never going to happen though but hey we got 15 different micronations... Yes I'm bitter.)

But when it gets to regions, I often find it hard to get invested. I feel like then with regions it so often becomes even more US centric than the Hetalia fandom already is because half the time it's just another version of someone's OC of North Carolina or Nebraska or something. Which not that there is anything wrong with that it's just not my thing. Even with Poland, i don't really feel the need to make OCs for the Voivodeships.

The other thing I find hard to get invested in when it's an alternate character that's supposed to be a canon character but different but it's like this character is like the equivalent of the canon character's sixth cousin five times removed.

I have zero Hetalia rn but I do have a single statetalia thought and it consists of Kentucky and Tennessee getting Up To Shenanigans, Virginia and North Carolina get sent after them to make them fix said Shenanigans but ONLY after extensive “I’m not their mother!!” Complaints.

Well, my beloved, either you picked awful numbers, or I have awful taste in music (unlikely for the Cyrano soundtrack features heavily on my Wrapped this year), because #69 is Mongolian rock music, #21 actually will work for that ship but not in a fun way, and #5 is the song I use to try to calm down my dog whenever the concept of wind gives her anxiety.

"I'll pick #69 for the horniest characters," Katie thought. "Surely the funny number will correspond with a song that's worthy of the number." And then Jess looked at her playlist and found Mongolian rock music. Which was good music, but FREAKING HARD to adapt for these characters.

"What on earth are you listening too?" Carson asked as Roberto was at his desk in the living room, editing a movie script and actually wearing his reading glasses for once.

"Music." Roberto answered, chewing on the end of his pen. A habit he'd developed when he quit smoking.

"I can tell that." Carson deposited the decaf coffee next to his significant other, before taking a sip from his bottle of beer. "But where the heck is it from?"

"Mongolia." Roberto answered. "Bev sent me the album, said 'it fucks severely'. And she was right, it does."

Carson bit back a chuckle. "Of course she did. Is that script even set in Asia?"

"The vibes I need to edit does not have to match the vibes of the screenplay."

"Doesn't answer my question."

Roberto doesn't even glance at him, making a few quick edits and then frowning at something. Carson could have sworn he heard Roberto mutter well that's just a little too cliche for me even as he scribbled something out. Carson just watched him work, and sighed, settling down on the couch with his beer. Roberto's dogs were already fast asleep in their beds.

In a little while, he'd drag him off to bed. But for now, he'd just listen to this music with Roberto, and wonder if that script was set anywhere near Mongolia.

#21, Rusty and Kitty

Well. Sure this won't be sad/dark/SOMETHING EMOTIONAL.

Quick Author's note: This is set sometime in the late 1800s, North Carolina, and contains some allusions period typical racial violence. However, the characters, being capable of resurrection, do more violence in revenge. So you're warned in advance.

The problems always began when the area they'd managed to eek away a safe place to live in became too settled. When more people came, and asked questions about why a black woman and a white man were living together. Of course, Rusty knew that if the situation were reversed, it would be far worse. But still...

Here he and Kitty were, resurrecting in the ashes of their burned cabin. It wasn't the first time, and it wouldn't be the last. Slowly, he got up, and went looking for their stash.

The spare clothes, food and water, and the weapons were out by the time Kitty stirred. Rusty helped her clean up and get dressed before he worried too much about himself. But once they were both done, they looked at each other with tired eyes.

When they'd come home after re-admittance to the Union, they'd both prayed things would get better. But as Reconstruction had faded away, they'd watched it all go to hell again. Rusty didn't even have to ask Kitty, tossing her a fully loaded pistol and a rifle with a bayonet already affixed.

They didn't speak. No banter of Yellowhammer or Tar Heel. Kitty simply crested the slight hill to look down on the town, and when Rusty joined her, she pointed out the houses of each of the men who'd burned down their home. Tired green eyes met exhausted brown ones, and they sat down, recovering and waiting.

And when night had fallen again, when the town was silent and still with sleep, they went down.

They stayed at each other's backs as they broke down doors and walked into bedrooms. As they shot their way through men who had shot them. They only killed the ones who'd been involved, leaving the others in each family behind.

And in the morning, they were somewhere in the mountains, sitting on stolen horses, and nursing cups of coffee with reloaded pistols.

Others in the north could preach about peace. Of a house divided reuniting. But the North, the Union, had abandoned them.

Alabama took North Carolina's hand as she walked them further south. They'd take shelter in Ashton's home for a while. South Carolina would have probably have heard of the murders by the time they got there, but he wouldn't turn out his sister, or Rusty. He'd frown, and quietly let them in.

Violence answered violence. And as long as justice was not served in this country, Rusty and Kitty, along with all the other states, would have blood on their names.

#5, Chris and Evelyn

Not much to work with from a calming, instrumental piece, so I used the title more as the prompt than anything else.

Quick Author's notes: Nothing too serious in this one, but there are some musings on death, so be warned.

They're sitting on the porch of Christopher's home in Wallowa county as the last light of the summer day fades into the night. The insects are singing, and the wind is whispering all around them. Both have Pendleton blankets across their laps, just existing in a peaceful silence.

And then, Chris speaks.

"How do you think it'll be when we die a permanent death? Do you think it'll be violent? Or will we just go to sleep? And- will we leave behind any signs we lived at all?"

Evelyn blinks, startled out of her silent reverie. "Well. How long have you been sitting on that one?"

"A bit." Chris admits, looking out at his horses. "I guess it's mostly in the abstract, but the succession movements always bring it to mind."

Ah, this was about Greater Idaho. Fifty years ago, it was about the State of Jefferson. Ten years ago, it was about Cascadia. Chris and Beverly constantly remembering that if they became too fractured, one or both of them might fall.

"Maybe it'll be violent. But I think we'll just- just disappear." She looked towards the softly colored sky, still clothed in dusk rather than night. "People will know we existed. We'll leave behind some sort of legacy."

Chris looked doubtful on that. She knew why. He'd watched languages and people die, while the conquerors tried to pretend they'd never existed at all. She took his hand.

"If something happened to you, and I was still around, I'd make sure you were remembered. Adam would. Clark would. We all would. I promise you won't just disappear.

He nodded, giving her a grateful look without looking directly at her. As their hands fell apart from each other, she heard him whisper.

"I'd do the same if anything happened to you."

How much Cheerwine is too much?

I’m realizing I never shared these doodles from April lol. Just Alfred/ USA and some of the undeniably Appalachian states being Jonah/ West Virginia, Maisie/ North Carolina, Betsy/ Tennessee, & Roy/ Kentucky mostly circa early 1800s. Early frontier and wars with indigenous nations, Alfred spent a lot of time with these states. I’ll try to keep everything brief cause lol I do have a lot of Maisie-specific lore that can be better expanded upon another time, but I wanna share them cause why not

Alfred went from being this grumpy New Englander to being a bit more lighthearted and more like the funny charming Alfred of today, and a lot for that happened cause he spent so much time with these states especially Maisie/ North Carolina who’s quite friendly, very confident in herself and isn’t afraid to speak her mind or share a couple of jokes. Alfred doesn’t like Maisie at first cause he thinks she’s uncouth and insane. Maisie thinks Alfred is an uptight little bitch. But Alfred and Maisie eventually develop feelings for one another and Maisie becomes his first love. However, Alfred and also Maisie are extremely stubborn and neither are afraid of confrontation- this eventually leads to the breakdown of the relationship.

Alfred also from spending time with all of them learns a lot of new musical styles and actually it brings him closer with many southern states that aren’t in Appalachia and western ones as he expands. This is where he begins becoming less of a New Englander and slowly learns to accept new ways of let’s say being American so he begins to grow into the national rep.

Hm ok so some of this I’ll explain more when I work on my revolution arc- but the short version is many of the east coast states are slightly older than Alfred. And they barely agreed to put Alfred in charge especially cause he’s very aggressively a New Englander. So southern states especially aren’t his biggest fan and are rather hesitant.

Jonah/ West Virginia not being a state for much of the early 1800s yet existing as a representative of then his older brother Rich/ Virginia’s back country led to him develop a bit of a chip on his shoulder. And he sees Alfred as an outsider so he doesn’t particularly like him.

States like Betsy/ Tennessee & Roy/ Kentucky are super young during the early 1800s so not much to say about them. Actually TBH I don’t have much information for either Betsy or Roy other than Betsy is a Melungeon & plays the mandolin and is very musically gifted. Roy plays the banjo. I think Jonah plays the fiddle and Maisie plays the guitar.
