Terror from the Deep

In one world, Izuku is left behind by his father and his uncle to hatch while they leave to play a new game, one undoubtedly dangerous to the world it’s in. In another world, Hisashi reuses some old puppets as company while he’s separated from his brother. - Tomura can’t remember his father, just the faint impression of a smile moments before terror. Yoichi Shigaraki was killed fourteen years ago by a sea monster so powerful that being in the very presence of it left Tomura permanently altered, and the trauma of the situation left him with gaps in his memory creating a blank slate for his early childhood. Since then, he’s been living with Uncle Hisashi, who’s held off on his revenge to take care of him. Now that he’s older, and with a new crew to back them up, Tomura and his Uncle are going to track down the monster and bring it to justice–along with the pirate who serves it. But…Tomura’s been getting horrific nightmares about something other than the sea monster, and he’s starting to suspect that there’s more to this than meets the eye. After all, his Uncle has more than a few suspicious habits.

I LOVE the villains. I adore tenko and while I stand by my decision to write him out early in bitter rivalry, I also always thought it was a shame, because I love him. I'm not caught up on the manga but my friend is keeping me up to date... seems like horikoshi is really tapping into the fantastic potential of tenko's character as someone who was groomed since childhood to become this destructive monster and was never given the chance to form a healthy sense of identity... and the parallels with izuku? how they were both these timid little abused children who idolized heroes even though they had mixed feelings about whether or not heroes could actually be trusted? because they needed something to believe in? oh my god

I also find keigo to be very compelling, and touya as well, and how they interact with each other. the concept of keigo who was essentially BOUGHT by the government as a child and raised into this maximum-pressure role???? doing all this fucked up shit, like becoming a spy in this nationally feared terrorist organization, and murdering jin who was his friend, and betraying dabi who he had so much in common with, and that's to say nothing of his normal hero life which involves having the whole entire world on his shoulders, publicly, at all times. and he's like. literally my age. girl

and then touya????? one thing I lowkey can't forgive canon for is that touya told the whole world what enji did, and the whole world just decided to do nothing about it. honestly I preferred fanon touya before he released that video in the manga, when all the dabi fics had him going around killing abusers and shit as vicarious revenge against his dad instead of just murdering innocent people to spite his dad. but either way touya as one of the people the hero system actively victimizes - the son of a violent abuser who is worshipped for the exact same aggression he wields against his wife and kids - and touya's refusal to lie down and let it happen, his decision to fight back with all his strength no matter how much of a monster it makes him... now that's good

keigo and touya having no say whatsoever in their childhoods being raised for combat... keigo and touya always holding endeavor as their ultimate symbol of what heroism is and means... keigo and touya being liars, keeping secrets, burying themselves in so many layers of truth and untruth and half-truth that they can't quite distinguish anymore who they are or what they believe, only what they do... keigo and touya trusting no one, keigo and touya dreaming so hard for a better world even though they have no evidence that it's possible at all. keigo and touya being in love and still stabbing each other in the back bc they don't have the freedom not to, or think they don't

This scene...the League is missing a couple people in their headcount, so I have to ask...where were Dabi and Spinner when this all went down?

I mean, I gather Horikoshi left Dabi out for plot purposes; with a long-range Quirk, he probably would've just blasted a jet of flames at Overhaul's group as soon as things started going hostile. Little bit op in this context. And Spinner could be missing because it wasn't 'necessary' to have him here and he might've been one of the casualties if he was. Magne gets taken out and Mr. Compress loses an arm; yeah, no way is Spinner taking that sitting down.

But there's still no explanation of where they went. Their whole thing is right here. It's not like they're leading double lives and have somewhere else to be right now. Even when the group meets up later, nobody addresses what they were doing at the meeting time.

Did they decide Twice was taking too long and stepped out for coffee?

Are they keeping watch outside? Why didn't they come running when they heard the chaos?

Did Dabi start vomiting blood because of the Lovecraftian horror show that's his apparent health issues, and Spinner drew the short straw in making sure he didn't up and die on them?

Were they just waiting at a drive-thru when they got a text from Toga that read,  “Hey, the meeting went south, Magne’s dead, and Atsuhiro’s missing an arm.  Meet us at…”

Seriously, I want to see how these two reacted to that.  “What the hell, guys, we were gone for ten minutes!”

I'm so tired of Spinner being left out and excluded from the League. Put Spinner back in the League please. Make him Himiko's endearingly awkward big brother. Make him Magne's endearingly awkward little brother. Make him worry about Tomura whenever he gets sick and dedicate his time to taking care of him. Let him go to the gym with Jin. Let him argue with Dabi. Let him make video game references. Let him be the only one to understand the gaming references Tomura makes. Let him go skateboarding. Make him stay up late at night playing GTA. Make him a paranormal fanatic, despite him easily getting spooked. Include him in League game night, where he annoys everyone when they play Monopoly because he keeps begging for money just to spend it poorly. Let Jin teach him how to work on cars because Shuuichi's interested in mechanics. Let him playfully call Atsuhiro's magic tricks lame. Let him help Kurogiri wash the dishes after dinner. Make him a hopeless romantic. Make him a source of support for the League. Make the League comfort him whenever he's upset. Make him laugh so hard he cries at a shitty joke Dabi makes. Make him rope Dabi into playing video games with him whenever Tomura's not around even though Dabi sucks at them. Make him want to reconnect with his family, because despite all the shitty things they've said and done to him and them being complicit in the discrimination he faced, he still cares about them and wants them to have a good life. Make him not want to have a birthday party because the greatest gift to him is just being able to hang out with his friends. Make Spinner care so much about his friends. Give the man anxiety. Give the man insecurities. Give the man his friends back.
