File Under Uneasy Listening. No doubt if Mark Edward Smith was still alive (he died in 2018) The Fall would still be churning out albums at a rate of knots. Roughly one a year since the band’s inception in 1976. 42 years, 32 studio albums (many many more EPs, live LPs, comps and others) and over 60 musicians passing through The Fall turnstiles is not so much ‘prolific’ as indecently voracious. This compilation album appears to have two subtitles: 39 Golden Greats and The Very Best Of The Fall 1978-2003 which together provide a pretty good description of its contents. If you’d been living under a rock during those years, and not heard of The Fall, then it still can’t possibly prepare you for what the music actually sounds like. Both loved and lambasted as a rowdier, rougher-round-the-edges version of The Smiths during the early 80s, this cheap comparison was massively incorrect. Most likely come up with by London-based music journalists who equated any band from Manchester as hewn from the same stone. I’m not sure how you’d describe their music. Genre-wise: post-punk, alternative, indie, all the usual meaningless labels. But in practice: rough jangling jarring guitars, frenetic drumming (often with two drummers), ‘songs’ which lurch seemingly indiscriminately from verse to chorus like some dazed drunk at the end of the night, and then Smith’s vocals over the top. Not so much ‘singing’ as ranting whatever thoughts were on his shopping list of ‘things to complain about’ that day. It’s hard to imagine that many of these songs were ‘hits’, in fact many performed highly on the UK Indie Charts (does that still exist?) and many more are a soundtrack to the grey grimness of the early 80s: Industrial Estate, Totally Wired, Eat Y’self Fitter. Who we loved at #hitthenorth
We at Fax absolutely love celebrating our Northern Culture as it’s a major part of our identity, which is why we attended the Hit the North festival. Also, we love live music. Hit the North is special because it celebrates being northern and it celebrates emerging, unsigned and grassroots music movements with plenty of gems to be uncovered and new favourites to stumble on.
So for the love of music, here are our favourites.
1) QUEEN ZEE @ THINK TANK
Tumblr media
Queen Zee woke us up with a raucous set, full of attitude and high octane punk energy. You could say it was refreshing.
They are one of those bands who take risks because they are all about putting on a show regardless of time and place, even if it is a sleepy 3:30 gig in front of a sleepy audience suffering from heat exhaustion (that may have just been me). The crowd may not have been fully awake but Queen Zee didn’t seem to care, even going as far as to make it their mission to get the festival off to a good start for everyone in the room, mission accomplished, to be honest.
Naturally, being a real punk band, Queen Zee is politically charged and some songs can be challenging but don’t let that put you off. They don’t make this their be all, they are about inclusivity and having fun, which let’s be honest, you probably need a little more punky fun in your life.
2) A FESTIVAL, A PARADE @ THINK TANK
Tumblr media
North East natives; A Festival A Parade, are on a mission to leave every gig as everyone’s new favourite band and this showing was absolutely no different. They really did bring their A-game, leaving an impression on us and leaving us wondering how on earth this was our first time seeing them.
Despite only playing a festival set, they managed to squeeze a real show full of riffage, dripping with emotion and really just working you through a psychedelic wringer like few others can. Seeing them live really is a treat for lovers of guitar bands with plenty of riffs, psychedelic fused synth highs and gritty distorted lows.
The band clearly know how to work a live audience with the packed THINK TANK gripped from start to finish with the end coming too soon for most.
3) Shredd @TT Underground
Tumblr media
This hard-hitting three-piece from Glasgow is all about bringing you infectious, authentic DIY rock. Which is precisely what they did and we are incredibly happy to have found them. Hitting the stage in front of a sparse crowd, they left a packed room of people who were happy, deaf and hooked on Shredds huge riffs, poppy hooks and fuzz-laden carnage.
It’s easy to understand why Shredd is quickly building a reputation for live shows brimming with chaotic energy from start to finish when they get things underway with an immediate blast of pop-infused hooks to get the audience moving, then unveiling their tendency for chaos driven riffs and catchy melodies.
With a lo-fi aesthetic and fuzz-laden sound, Shredd comes armed with a refreshing sense of authenticity that is hard to ignore. Basically, these guys can be simultaneously dark and energised without confusing the audience. Obviously, this is a good thing as no one gets alienated and everybody can enjoy this band that brilliantly executes a fuzzy rampage that keeps you hooked.
