Christmas Campfire and a Bit of Mistletoe (Solangelo Christmas one-shot)

The campfire was warm. Really warm.

The orange glow lit up Nico’s pale skin like nothing before. He felt like he was on fire; but it was pleasant. Somehow, the silly Santa-Hat on his head and the ugly black, red and green sweater he wore fit the atmosphere. Gathered around the campfire were the few demigods who’d stayed for the winter and stayed awake this long. For them, Nico felt somewhat grateful.

It was Christmas, well past midnight, and Mr. D and Chiron had agreed to letting snowfall into the camp. It was cold, but thanks to the fire, things were warm. A handful of Apollo kids sat on one side, singing a sleepy acoustic version of Silent Night whilst other campers listened in sleepy earnest.

Nico himself felt quite at home. It was pretty much his first Christmas in literal decades, ever since his mother was killed.

He still had distant memories of a giant hotel-lobby tree, decorated with carefully chosen lights and a dazzling angel on top. He remembered buffet lines, Santa Clauses, and him, Bianca and his mother, huddled together around a fire as they were handed wrapped presents.

The last thing he remembered receiving had been a teddy-bear of sorts. It was nice and soft, but it was gone now, lost underneath rubble and bad memories.  

And now, after a near eternity, newer, better memories were being formed. He had this camp, friends, and a home. He’d made peace with his demons and strained relationships. He’d learned to accept himself, and somehow finally had someone to not only accept, but love him in earnest too.

Nico smiled to himself, matching the campfire’s warm glow.

“Aww, why don’t you ever give me that look?” Came the voice from behind him. Before he could react, Nico was enveloped in a welcoming warmth which he didn’t even bother to fight. Speak of the devil.

“Hi, Will.”

His boyfriend was about to pull something. He just knew it.

Nico titled his head to find himself being lured into the sight of perfectly bronzed skin, unbelievably bright blue eyes, flecks of golden hair peeking out from underneath a ridiculously large hat, and a wide, welcoming smile to boot. He allowed himself to smile.

“How’s Christmas going, babe?”

“Mmm… nice.”

“Well it’s about to get even better.”

“Oh yeah?” Nico had failed to register the slightly menacing edge to the boy’s tone, too mesmerized by how blue his eyes were close-up in the firelight. He loved those eyes.

“Yeah. Look up,” Will grinned, ear-to-ear in a devious look. Nico lifted his eyes to find the ridiculously large hat Will was wearing had some sort of fishing hook attached, and hanging right above them was a neat little cluster of… mistletoe?

Judging from his grin, it was definitely mistletoe.

Nico groaned. “Oh my gods, this is the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever pulled.”

“But you love it.”

“Well, I don’t hate it.”

Will laughed and for a while, Nico did too.

“Well, pucker-up pretty boy. I’m kissing you under the mistletoe whether you come into the Big House tonight or not!
