Why Gavin Reed Isn't A Brainless Asshole

Very short exposition of the facts in honor of @treeffles And whoever wants to read it.

Well, let's see: the following points constitute a basic approximation, but they can be developed more extensively. They also admit subsequent nuances.

1 – The information offered to us about the subject is partial and limited. The premise is manichaean: they present us with a subject from whom only unpleasant characteristics and behaviors have been selected, compared to other characters that cover a broader evolutionary arc. Throughout the game we can see that everyone can choose various actions, which change their behavior and interaction with respect to the android reality. Not so in the case of Reed, whose gameplay is not as extensive as the rest. He is a character deliberately projected to be "the bad guy."

We can accept the decision that the program has made for us (which, if we think about it, is a small scam comparatively speaking), but if so we must also accept that it is not his fault, he have been designed that way.

Therefore, there could be many possibilities to see other facets of the character, which they are deliberately stealing from us. That being the case, I decide to consider that these possibilities exist. The opposite is meekly accepting the story that the creators have decided that I have to validate as the only possible reality.

2 – We are not taking into account his background as a worker in a society in which artificial intelligence is severely affecting unemployment figures. What impact has this had on his life, on his family, on his education or lack thereof? It's easy to see him as the "bad guy" without knowing anything about his life and past, especially when his opponent is a cute boy with an initially docile demeanor. The most naïve conclusion would be that Reed is a bastard who abuses a poor boy, but we are letting ourselves be carried away by biases and prejudices.

If we stick to what we just have in front of us, we have the option of considering that we don't know enough about Reed and his background, or his life outside or inside the precinct to conclude that he is an asshole, all the time and for any reason. And for his part, Connor is not a poor boy: the thing which arrives at the precinct is an overdeveloped AI, a highly sophisticated set of machinery with a human appearance. Nothing else. Gavin's initial reaction is no worse than that of Hank and other characters, with the aggravating circumstance that he is not allowed to deal with said machine other than a few specific moments within the precinct. He can't change his mind about Connor because he doesn't have opportunities. Within this scenario, his aversion is predictable and reasonable. Gavin has done nothing wrong beyond his very human aversion to the possibility of being replaced in the future by an an airy toaster.

3 – General conclusion: there is not enough evidence to affirm that Reed is a brainless asshole. In fact, no one becomes a detective without some degree of experience, discernment, and training. We can choose to judge him by the limited features that have been presented to us, that is, what we know about him (which is really little) or to go off the rails that have been imposed on us and consider everything we do not know (which is a lot).

Not to mention that even when we stay within the “Reed is a horrible human being” bias, we can keep in mind that no one is irredeemable: Gavin can open up to the reality of other circumstances as they change over time. Redemption is within everyone's reach, although personally I think he has done nothing wrong. Otherwise, I would be the worst person in the world for all the times I've yelled at my laptop xD

Although that does remind me of the Hankconkus Dads one that I never actually started, where Hank has Cole from a previous marriage, Connor has Nines from a messy one night stand situation, and Markus just got custody of his half brother Leo and is new to town, and Hank and Connor help him navigate his new guardianhood and they all three fall in love!

I'm just a childfree asshole who's gotta get all that Hallmark shit out via fanfic, any warm fuzzies just get implanted into my boys.

Beyond repeating my answers for the above? 😂 Lemon Stealing Whore gets an honorable mention, but it's hard to say, I like a lot of Dead Dove topics but I'm pretty predictable, I know I've done some crack ideas before but I cannot remember them, it's not what I'm known for.

Actually, I'd have to branch out of fandom for that, because I've been in another Steven Universe phase, and that just opens up so many doors, the other night we were joking about Steven doing puppy play and actually accidentally shapeshifting into a dog because of how much he felt like a dog 🤣 (real talk tho, boy could just walk around like a furry, at least he could shift some ears and a tail, he just doesn't like to shapeshift) and the idea of Hannibal Lecter being Steven Universe's therapist? Beneath the Waves

They swam down together. Hand in hand to be exact, Silas finally had him and it didn’t seem like he was too inclined to let him go. Allen was fine with that, he’d spent so much of his life giving chase that he was okay with being lead into his future. It probably took them longer to get back than it would have if Silas had gone alone, because every time he saw something new Allen would stop to marvel at it for a while. Silas was more patient with him in this than Allen had ever known him to be, and it was a pleasant change. The others were waiting for them, at the edge of the lagoon. Despite Connor’s best efforts, Tina got away from him and caught Allen in a tight hug. She apologized several times though it was difficult to discern through her tears. When she let go Connor greeted him pleasantly. It seemed whatever bad blood had been there came to rest. He wasn’t ready to see Hank again. He knew he would, they’d met the same fate after all, but there was something about seeing him that rattled Allen. They didn’t say a word to each other but there was a quiet understanding to his eyes when he looked at Allen. Nines lingered by his side, and there was a coldness to him that made Allen wary, but he knew it wasn’t underserved. Not after what he had put them through.

Amanda didn’t seem too pleased to see him either. She didn’t remark on it directly, but there was a sharpness to her words as she showed them around. He was amazed by this place. He had grown up in a sea side town, so he’d grown up hearing tales of Sirens, but it was something else entirely to see it for himself. He knew he would probably be an outsider for a while, but that didn’t keep this place from feeling like coming home. It was the first time he had felt so relaxed without some sort of guilt hanging over him. Not the guilt of losing Gavin, or keeping Silas away from his home. For once there was nothing hanging over him and he was allowed to feel. It was something that took getting used to, almost more than being a siren did. There were still things he needed to learn of course. Not to mention when he would wake up and panic for a moment thinking that he needed air. Silas was always there too soothe him. Learning the language took time, and even now he still struggled with it from time to time.

Time seemed to pass differently beneath the waves. There was no distinctive marker between day and night, or how many of each had passed. It could have been months or years later when Allen came to the realization that he had adjusted. Chasing after Silas was his new normal, as was keeping him out of trouble. It was a startling moment to find that he wouldn’t have changed a thing, even with all it took to get here. There were still days he missed Gavin, that wasn’t something he would ever fully recover from. As he lay there carding his fingers through Silas’s hair, he knew it wouldn’t be something that haunted him anymore. It was part of what it had taken to get here, and he had no doubts that this was where he was meant to be. He owed it to Gavin, and the best way to honor his memory would be to be happy.

Undertale series. Without Undertale, I never would have found Jack. I first saw him in an Undertale reaction compilation and even though it took me some time beyond that to find his channel, that was how I learned he existed XD The first Genocide video is the one I come back to the most. (I miss the New Yorker voice Jack gave Sans back then.)

Detroit Become Human series. I love Choose Your Own Adventure stories anyway, but the memes that came out of this, Jack’s love (and my own love) for Hank and Connor’s father/son dynamic, the wholesome friendship that formed between Jack and Bryan and Amelia, it all just brings warm memories.

The JSE Power Hour: Dr. Schneeplestein. My boy. Just...it’s all about my boy. He gets to be the center of attention and he’s adorable. Soak it in. (Honorable mention for The JSE Power Hour: Jameson Jackson, because that was just as great and even more memorable.)

Kill Jacksepticeye. The video that entrenched Schneep as my favorite Ego and drove the fear of Anti home for me -- not to mention that it was the turning point in all of the Egos’ storylines! Jack’s coma is still enduring to this day! The buildup in KJSE was superb and the payoff kept me glued to the screen. It’s just so, so, so good. Still my favorite Anti appearance, hands down.

The Doctor Is Back. It was such a relief to see Schneep safe(?) and whole(?) onscreen again. I still remember how I burst into tears and woke up my brother, who was on the other side of the house XD

Simulacra series. The first game, at least, had lots of awesome spooks! And the hilarity of Greg, of course. I’ll never forget Jack’s reaction when the game recognized his real name. 

Doki Doki Literature Club series. More great spooks, innovation and with a bonus of little Anti glitches, back when those could still catch you off guard. It was an interesting and engrossing time, even when it got dark.

Duality of Light - Chapter 4 Deleted Scene

As everyone knows (especially with anything creative), sometimes what you're making just doesn't fit with what you're going for. Or sometimes you doubt your ability to accomplish it. Well, for those interested, and for my posterity, I'm going to post an initial (really rough, really meh, but was also really hard for me to remove) scene that didn't make the "final cut" for Ao3.

"Elijah," Gavin said. Damn, was he crying? Gavin Reed did not cry.

"Gavin?"

On Elijah's end, Gavin could hear things dropping, like tools or metallic materials. His brother was probably in his workshop.

"Sorry, you sound busy," Gavin said. It felt like glue was trying to keep his words from coming out. "I'll hang up."

"No! No, it's okay. I'm not busy, I'm more surprised, actually. Can I help you with anything?"

"Make it make sense, Elijah, because nothing is fucking making sense right now!"

"Gavin, hey, you called me and I answered. So what happened?"

"Elijah, I swear, this better be some kind of fucking joke. You better not have had a hand in any of this even though I fucking know you did something. Tell me that you didn't fucking do this!"

Elijah went silent. Gavin nearly threw his phone across his apartment because that was confirmation enough that Elijah knew. He knew about this the whole fucking time.

"Say something, you piece of shit!" Gavin screamed into his phone.

"You found out. About your... condition."

"No shit! What the fuck is this? I'm getting pieces over here and I don't like the picture they're making. Make it make fucking sense."

"Gavin, you need to promise me that you'll remain calm if I explain myself, okay?"

"I'm fucking bleeding blue when the entire time I thought my blood was red like every other fucking human on the planet. But sure, I'll remain calm."

Elijah huffed a long sigh. "You're an android, Gavin."

Gavin stared at the copies of his public records Elijah sent that were stored on a local drive somewhere. One was what he expected: a collection of newspaper articles where his name was mentioned for arrests, a brief article of when he got promoted to detective, a brief biography that listed him as "Reed, Gavin; D.O.B. October 7th, 2002," and one from a more recent time he had to talk to the press to bring awareness to kids about the dangers of Red Ice.

The second file...

Gavin Reed, born on October 7th, 2002 as Gavin Reed-Kamski in the city of Detroit, MI passed away on November 2nd, 2028 at age 26 while on duty working for the Detroit Police Department.

Son of Henry Kamski (passed January 2nd, 2025, aged 59) and Rachel Reed (passed December 18th, 2024, aged 55) he is survived by his half-brother Elijah Kamski. May his memory be honored and we appreciate his service to the community.

Underneath was the formal picture of him in his dress uniform, the same one hanging on a wall with all his other coworkers at the Detroit Police Central Station. There was another picture of his mom and dad with him and Elijah at the front, posing for a group photo for when he finished high school at sixteen, three years after Elijah.

He was looking at his own fucking obituary.

"You're still there?" came Elijah's voice on the other end of the phone call.

"Fuck."

"Are you okay?"

"Fuck, Eli. Just... what the fuck did you do? Am I dead or not?"

"You're dead. But... not."

"How does that make any fucking sense?"

"I can send you more files. Ones that'll give you more context."

"Eli, how the fuck is any of this fucking possible if this is saying I'm dead?"

Gavin scrubbed a hand down his face. Fuck. What did Elijah do?

"Explain," he said. "You better fucking explain. Now."

"Gavin, it's complicated and I'm going to explain the best way I can." Elijah sighed. His next words were shaky, like he was trying to keep himself together. "I was there. For once in my life, I was there for my brother, but it was too... fucking late to realize what I was doing to my family. I lost everyone. And it wasn't fair. My brother was just getting his life started and then it ended so fast. But no, I thought maybe I could get another chance, give him another chance. I thought maybe I could bring my brother back, so I left CyberLife and took the remnants of an RK100 android that I had in my possession and I programmed the most lifelike android I could create. I programmed his memories and his personality based on what I remember of him, of the journals that he used to write in for a majority of his life, specifically created a mind palace that would take all that input and simulate the closest thing to my brother. I did this for an entire month."

"Then why the fuck don't I remember it that way?"

Well, my reasoning for why I removed this from the final draft was because of my struggles with trying to characterize Kamski for what I needed to fit in later. Also, I wasn't that happy with how to make this whole reveal impactful until the whole literally bringing Gavin to the gravesite idea that I had for another scene just... fit better. Ended up doing the shuffle with my timeline. It solved one of my issues with one of my plotlines (which is a bonus), but it created another problem with a different plotline. UGH. Why writing be difficult?

Replaying the game with some new things in mind, some extra information and POVs and I find it funny how many dog and kid parallels Connor got (including cut content). The dog one I don't needa explain, it's literally he being on a leash called Amanda/CL (honorable mention to "always keep ya head down for humans" 🫢).

And also how he's often confronted with mfs being parents/parent figure or having a guardian relationship with a kid, esp androids.

I mean, Daniel and Emma,Kara and Alice, Hank and Cole, Chris and Damien...

In my opinion I think it's easier, narratively speaking, Connor becoming a dad or a father figure/guardian to kids than wanting to have a father or see someone as his father, or even being a son to someone 😂💀

Detroit Evolution Commentary Pt. 3 [FINAL]

It’s been a while, sorry. Life sucks ass sometimes and I had to do some transferring to my new laptop. I’ll write down some more fun facts as an apology. Disclaimer: This is all stuff I noticed, inferred, or interpreted. I didn’t write the film, anything I’ve interpreted is just that, an interpretation based on things I noticed using my experiences and knowledge. 

Fun fact #1: I have attempted to write in a proper novel style at least five times. After watching DE and watching @octopunkmedia ‘s script breakdowns and such, I've started writing scripts instead. I’m much farther along in those than I ever have been in books. 10/10 amazing for my visual based concepts.

Fun fact #2: My mental health was rapidly declining and I was losing interest in quite literally everything at the time the film was released. Watching the film and fixating on it for a month straight not only inspired me but helped me regain control of my life. Watching streams by the cast and Michelle while I worked for school made my productivity skyrocket.

Fun fact #3: I recently developed a tic that I now can’t get rid of. It was out of control for about twenty minutes right before I began writing this post. However, when I began re-watching the film (partially because it’s a comfort for me and I’m quite honestly terrified of what’s happening in the US right now) it stopped. So that’s fun.

The lighting in this scene (the office pt. 2) makes Maximilian look Android-white and outlined in the CyberLife blue-ish color. Very symbolic, I have no idea if it was intentional.

Another shoutout, this time to Maximilian’s eyebrows, the expressiveness is *chef’s kiss*.

Also, he looks to Gavin when he talks about wanting to be more human. Recurring theme of him perceiving himself as lacking because of his ace-ness/android-ness, like he can’t give Gavin what he wants. Honestly I know that the android thing is a thinly veiled metaphor for race in canon but I kinda like thinking of it as a metaphor for being LGBT+ and in Nines’ case, specifically ace. Might not make sense but it does in my brain??

Gavin Senses Are Tingling and Nines is GONE. Leaving the bar for ur not-bf to try to talk things out like adults??? King shit.

“You don’t want to help me, you want to fix me.” What a loaded line. Because in a way, it’s almost true? Like, Nines has this entire simulation of Gavin in his ideal world, and obviously that version of Gavin has probably been idealized at least a bit. Nature of humanity, and Nines might not be human but he’s got the Brain Things. And at that moment, it’s nearly true that Nines wants Gavin to be like that ideal Gavin. Obviously Nines wants Gavin as Gavin, but there’s the edge of that simulation there, still. 

But Nines does want to help Gavin, and that’s where he’s wrong. Nines wants Gavin to get better, wants to help stop the nightmares, etc. But by pointing that out, I think it’s partially why Nines can accept letting go of Simulation!Gavin when Ada attacks him. Because he knows that the simulation of Gavin will never be the real Gavin, and this line sort of helps him understand that he can’t really keep Sim!Gavin anyways.

Again idk if that’s legit but that’s definitely something I felt from that while watching.

Nines is constantly very controlled, but when he walks away from Gavin you can see him straining to keep that composure and not let his anger show.

I do feel that we as a fandom tend to make Connor almost childishly innocent despite him being likely one of the least kind and least innocent characters. The characterization of Nines in this--and pardon me for the off topic rant--where he’s a fully grown man and acts like it is so much more realistic. Nines is a cop, as is Connor. 

Even post deviancy, they were designed and equipped to handle murder. Nines, in a lot of fandom content, tends to come off as an exasperated older brother or a gritty and mean detective, or even worse, essentially a sociopath who feels nothing in contrast to Connor’s childish and extreme innocence. I dislike both. Seeing Nines be a normal fucking person is so relieving, I’m serious. There’s still those elements of ‘oh he’s only been properly alive for like a year, right? He probably doesn’t get Chris’ Casanova reference.’ but it’s not to such an extreme that it overtakes all of his personality traits.

Like, yeah, ok, I get why a lot of fandom content does that. In order to balance what we see Connor do (and in order to further push the Hank as a father line) we over-emphasize the not getting references and such. Honestly I see the same in content for Castiel from Supernatural. Nines, when he’s added, often HAS to be a lot darker in order to make that seem not as jarring and unrealistic.

Doesn’t mean I enjoy it. If you do? That’s great, good for you, but I don’t like seeing those characters be portrayed as such one dimensional extremes. People aren’t like that. On the off chance that someone is such an extreme, there’s still other aspects of their personality.

DE has done an amazing job at not flattening their personalities. Nines and Gavin are three-dimensional and incredibly interesting characters I find myself invested in every time I watch it.

*Onto the commentary again.*

“Particular fascination with the RK line” AHAHA funny. She’s also an RK, and she likely knows more than Nines because her programming is based on information gathering. Her fascination begins and ends with what their programming can do for her.

The little computer details in Ada’s eyes as she copies Nines’ OS, and again in Nines’ eyes when he’s in the alley alone. I believe Michelle did all of that and I am just amazed every time I watch.

Look I cannot get into the speech because I will write 1.5k words on it, but I will say this: It made me cry. The acting, the writing, it’s iconic. The amount of love and devotion they got without even saying the words “I love you” was amazing. Chris is so very talented.

Nines deleting the Zen Garden and Sim!Gavin is very symbolic of letting go of all of the fake stuff, letting go of the fear he was holding that kept him from confessing to Gavin and I love that

Ok let me tell y’all a thing because this RUINS MY LIFE. People tend to take characters like Percy Jackson or Dean Winchester, whose intelligence isn’t outwardly obvious from the get-go, and remove it entirely. Percy is reduced to an idiot who can’t tie his own shoes and Dean is often shown basically unable to research without Sam. Both of those are bullshit. 

Percy has ADHD and Dyslexia, so when often we categorize smart as only book-smart, Percy’s intelligence as a battle strategist and his actual knowledge gets erased. Dean is usually the more physical and shoot-first-never-ask-questions type, and his intelligence is severely downplayed. He made an EMP detector from scratch. Made a shotgun, remembers how to kill things, is a very good hunter, especially on his own. But that’s thrown away because he’s not book-smart.

I despise when people take characters who are talented and smart in ways that aren’t just reciting the periodic table and reduce them to muscles and angst or drooling children. 

Octopunk having a scene where Gavin is working through a case, already having done the things that Chris, someone who was only recently promoted, suggests, is just affirming Gavin’s intelligence in a way I wish I could be not surprised by. Gavin is smart, and luckily I haven’t seen much downplaying that fact. He’s a detective for a reason. Unfortunately I think it might be because the fandom tends to turn Connor and Nines into actual children, but a win is a win.

Now I’m not saying I don’t love a good himbo character but I literally had to stop interacting with Percy Jackson content because people wrote him as incapable.

Ugh the COLOR SYMBOLISM!! This is one thing that Michelle has touched on herself! Gavin isn’t wearing white in this scene because he’s not ‘fixed’, he never will be! He has trauma and he’s just barely beginning to heal from it with Nines’ help. He’s wearing grey, lighter than his usual, but still grey because they aren’t pure or innocent and they’re not perfect!! And that’s the fucking point!! It’s also a contrast against Sim!Gavin wearing white! Sim!Gavin was an idealized version of Gavin in Nines’ idealized world!! Real Gavin isn’t that!! So he’s wearing grey!!

Ok before I sign off, it’s only 3 am so I think I’m awake enough to talk about this, I like that they bring up that Gavin has like, actual issues that he needs to get through. Let’s be 100% honest here, I see Gavin as having ADHD, depression, and probably a form or symptoms of PTSD. He’s kinda fucked up and I’m gonna be real here he needs some therapy. He’s got trauma and needs to work through it. 

I like that at the end they explicitly have Nines understand and accept that that’s what needs to happen. As someone who has actually had relationships ruined because of trauma (on both sides) that we were unprepared to work through together, if I had seen something like that? Game changer. As it was, most relationships I had seen were idealized and seemed to “fix” those issues by way of just being in a relationship. Thanks major media. 

Now that the Detroit Evolution post series is over, I’m gonna be a bit sentimental and say that this film quite literally changed my life. Seriously. Michelle is such a big inspiration for me and I can only hope to be the same for someone else.
