You sighed, laying in bed. Your father had yet to come home and Eleven was fast asleep in the single bedroom you gave up to her when she was found.
You rolled around on the bed, you were having a hard time sleeping per usual. You sat up at the sound of a car pulling up, tensing for a moment before relaxing with a slight giggle as your dad accidentally pressed the siren button before turning the police car off.
The sound of muttered curses were heard on the front porch as your dad did the special knock. “Yn? Eleven?” he spoke a little louder, trying to look behind the closed curtain. “I’m right here, calm down, old man.” you giggled once again as the man behind the door grunted. “Told you to stop calling me that.” he frowned as the front door opened.
“Yeah. Yeah.” you rolled your eyes, walking back to the bed. “Did I wake you?”
“No, I couldn’t sleep” you shrugged, laying back under the covers while the older man nodded, heading to the bathroom to take a shower.
It had been a few minutes since the shower started, You were staring at the ceiling quietly humming to yourself. Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey was the song of choice for the night.
You were still humming when Hopper got out of the shower, missing at how he stared at you in annoyance and confusion. He wasn’t annoyed with you; he had just had one hell of a day and you unfortunately weren’t helping the situation.
“Just a small-town girl, livin' in a lonely world.” you began to sing softly, “She took the midnight train goin' anywhere.”
“Yn.” your father sighed, knowing it fell upon deaf ears, you were in your own little world at the moment. “Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit.” you started swaying your head from side to side, “He took the midnight train goin' anywhere.” you smiled, jumping at the sound of the older man letting out a cough.
“Huh?” you looked at him, innocent eyes. “That’s enough.” he shook his head, plopping down onto his armchair. “I didn’t even get to the best part yet.” you complained with a pout.
“That’s. Enough.” he stared at you, eyes piercing through your soul in the dark room. “Fine.” you mumbled, crossing your arms, staring at the ceiling in silence once again.
“A singer in a smoky room.” you began singing quietly again, “The smell of wine and cheap perfume.”
You faintly heard your father sigh, opting to not pay attention to it since you weren’t being that loud. “For a smile, they can share the night it goes on and on and on and on.”
“Yn, for the love of god. Please.”
You looked over at him, “I can’t sleep.”
“That’s not my problem.”
“It is now.”
“Yn, please.”
“Fine.” you grumbled, turning away from him, staring at the wooden wall, holding onto your pillow, trying to count sheep; it didn’t work, it never did for you.
“Hey, Da—”
“Come here.”
You furrowed your eyebrows, looking over at him. “Huh?”
“Come here.”
You sighed, getting up walking over to your dad who held open arms. You smiled softly, cuddling into him, wrapping your arms around him.
“I know it’s been a while—” he began, biting his lip, thinking about the strained relationship the both of you have. “But, I also know this always did the trick.” he smiled, rubbing your back, softly chuckling at the sight of you already half asleep. “Looks like the old man’s still got it.”
You smiled, nodding. “You’re a dickhead but you’re still a safe space for me, despite everything.”
He smiled hearing those words, He never really knew where he truly lied with you. You were an expert at hiding your emotions, so he always thought you held a grudge towards, didn’t want anything to do with him. But, hearing that you still think of him as a safe space made him want to cry (happy tears, of course).
“I’m still a safe space for you?”
“Always.” you smiled, letting slumber take you over soon after.

Writer Trefry notes, “Hopper and Eleven are two profoundly nonverbal communicators. To get either one of them to a place of really spilling thoughts is basically a season-long journey. You really have to earn it. Hopper’s a cowboy. He’s a man’s man, and you really have to work him to get him to that place. But Harbour is amazing, and when you give him that stuff, you really buy it. It’s finally the crack in the veneer—the terror of parenthood that I think is fundamental to his character.”

More headcanons I made up for the crossover au where Vance Hopper moves to Hawkins because I’m having aniety attacks and writing out stuff aout my comfort characters calms me.
This is more about, I guess the dynamics in the Hopper family.
If this took place during season 1, I don’t imagine Vance really having that big a part in it other than being a part of Hopper’s past and storyline as he tries connecting again with his estranged son and remembering how he wasn’t there for him before while searching for Will.
This is both because he doesn’t have much connections to the Party yet and because I think Hopper would do his absolute best to keep Vance out of it, especially near the end when he starts to realize this is bigger than he thought involving the upside down and the government.
He knows Vance is still just recovering from a very traumatic event and doesn’t want to put him through anything else, he doesn’t want to risk losing him again, and he most certainly does not want the government’s eyes on him, too.
Whether or not this actually worked and Vance actually stayed out of it has yet to be decided in my brain.
Although I do like to think, to some degree, that if he did have a part, it would be mostly with the Byers with intersections in with Hopper since that is his dad in this au and he’s going to come home or get picked up by him.
It was not a good time and even a bit of a setback in Vance’s and Jim’s relationship when he came home to the aftermath of that scene where Hopper had been drinking again and even tore apart some of the house, the drinking part he found out from his mom who called back frantic after Vance plugged back in the phone.
Jim and Diane talk more in this au, but she makes it clear it's mostly just business and for Vance, calls only to ask about their son and how he's adjusting or doing since she knows Vance will just tell her what he thinks she wants to hear. If Jim starts talking about their own relationship and she thinks it might go down the road it usually does, she makes an excuse and hangs up.
Vance searched through the house after that and afterwards would randomly do searches for, and throw out any if he found it, any alcohol in the place. Jim drinking stresses his mom out, low-key stresses Vance out, which comes out in more anger, and is a place he is determined not to go back to since he still remembers when Jim would call drunk trying to get back with his mom.
Overall, Vance and Hopper's relationship became more strained for a while after that incident, although they're both trying their best to make it work since it does comes from a place of love. It's just that neither of them know how to express that properly.
It also very much takes a bit of a nosedive when El comes into the picture.
Depending on how much Vance knows about the events in season 1, he did think it was weird in the winter how Jim would leave in the early mornings with a box before coming back like nothing happened.
If he stayed out of the majority of the chaos, when Hopper came back one day with a strange girl, Jim lied through his teeth that she was the kid of an old friend who would be staying with them for a bit.
If Vance knew enough to know who El was, he'd be surprised at the very least to see she's still alive.
Either way, I can't see Vance's relationship with El, at first at least, being anything but complicated.
I mean, you're putting two stubborn, traumatized kids with anger issues that come out in ways you don't really want to be on the other end of (and El had anger issues as well, as a response to her trauma in the show) in the same small cabin who have no real ties to each other but their caretaker who's basically demanding they coexist and get along.
Vance also might probably feel like Hopper's trying to replace Sarah as time goes on with how he treats her. Especially since in his mind, his dad could apparently pull himself together for a girl he barely knew, but it took three years and Vance nearly dying to get Hopper to try.
Depending, once again, on just how much Vance would know post season 1, add in all this to being constantly left in the dark and lied to with vague, sketchy explanations he knows means something is up but can't prove it.
Overall I think he'd kinda resent her for the above reasons, but at the same time, he definitely sees the similar signs she was also hurt, her limited vocab, hair, and wonder at the simplest things set off a few alarms, and he kinda feels bad she has to stay in all day and knows how easy it is to go crazy with just your thoughts.
So it's like he won't openly antagonize her, but he's pretty cold at first and closed off, ignores her when he can, is more passive aggressive towards her when he can't, but he still somewhat cares about her being okay.
While Vance can't tell anyone about El apparently, he still complains about her to his friends in Denver over the phone, just keeping out the main details.
El also has accidentally crossed his boundaries once or twice since she doesn't know any better and she really does want a friend.
They've absolutely had the "get out of my room" argument.
El isn't too happy a camper either with the situation, Vance overall isn't the easiest person to live with and sometimes the arguments he has with Jim can scare her since they can get pretty loud even though that's just how they are.
She very much still does want to be friends with Vance, but sometimes her efforts can actually make things worse than better, and Jim will insist to give him space and let him come to her like he waited for her.
El can get jealous, too, that Vance is free to go whenever he wants but she can't, and it's been a topic of one of her own arguments with Hopper why she can't go or talk to her friends, but Vance can.
Vance is actually on her side for those since he thinks it's pretty unfair, too, if her going out alone is a problem, he could literally just go with her, she's not going to spontaneously combust the minute she steps into town.
The moments where Vance and El team up against Hopper are his nightmare, like, yes, he wants them to get along, but not when he's the common enemy.
They start to warm up to each other over time, but their relationship at first is pretty complicated, and by s2, they'd be a little better after almost a year, but there's still more downs than ups until they realize how much they have in common
Small off track note, Vance is that older sibling that'd probably lay down on you after winning a fight.
That's all I've got for right now.

now you're in the stars
waddup readers!! this is something i started writing in like 2020 and then never finished but i've been going through some unfinished docs and i realized i could just polish this one and it was actually what i wanted it to be! el is very sad i'm sorry :( jonathan is a good brother tho
It’s cold. It is November after all, so El isn’t surprised. She might go back inside soon, but for now she’ll keep sitting on the front steps, watching as lights go out in the neighbours’ houses one by one.
The school day was tough. She hadn’t expected school to be easy since she had never been to school before, but she’d had no choice. Joyce couldn’t afford to homeschool her, so they’d had Dr. Owens do them a favour and run some tests, which determined that she was at a stable enough point in her education to start high school with Will. He and the rest of their friends had started at Hawkins High in August, but El decided to wait until after they moved away. That way she would only have to be new once.
Being new isn’t any fun. Jonathan is a senior, and she doesn’t know anyone in their grade besides Will, who never talks to her much. It isn’t that they don’t get along, they just aren’t very close and prefer to keep to themselves most of the time. Luckily for him, Will has made some friends in an art club he joined. El, on the other hand, doesn’t have the slightest clue how to do the same. The friends she has were made by circumstance, and it was all Mike’s orchestration, anyway. If it had been up to Lucas, El would’ve been left in the woods the night they met her.
Mike. He’s the reason she had a tough day. Not that it’s his fault, but he was at the center of it. There is a group of other students at the school that El doesn’t like. They’re not outright mean to her, like pushing her or hurting her, but whenever they talk to her they say things in a way that she just knows is supposed to be rude. It started right within the first week of going to class when one of them tried to talk to her and El was too shy to hold a conversation properly. Now, they talk to her like she’s a baby, like she doesn’t understand them. She’s pretty sure she’s overheard them saying she’s a weirdo, or some word she’s never heard before that starts with an R. She’s not sure what it means, but it doesn’t sound nice.
Today, El had been at her locker getting her lunch so she could go and sit quietly with Will, as she usually does, and had paused to look at the inside of it. She has one of her pictures with Max up that they took at the mall in the summer, and she has one of Mike that he gave her a while ago when she asked. She used to keep it in her room at the cabin, but now she likes to look at it at school to make her feel less lonely. It reminds her that he misses her just as much as she misses him. She’s not entirely sure where they stand now, after the summer. She had broken up with him and then overheard him confess that he loves her, but then everything turned upside down and they just never ended up talking about it. She didn’t let herself leave without telling him she returns his feelings, but they haven’t actually talked about whether they’re back together or not. She would rather see him face to face than talk about it over the radio or the phone, but Thanksgiving is still a few weeks away.
She had probably been staring at the picture or something, because El hadn’t noticed the usual group of teenagers surrounding her locker until it was too late. One of them had snatched it right off the door, magnet and all, and started asking her questions.
Who’s this? She’d asked. Your cousin ?
El had hesitated. My boyfriend, she’d said. It’s easier for other people to understand his place in her life that way, even if it isn’t the complete truth. That’s another thing she’s learning: lies aren’t always bad. Sometimes they just make things easier when you’re in a tough situation.
None of them had believed her and had laughed at her for even saying such a thing, and then made fun of Mike for wearing a Ghostbusters costume and for the face he was pulling. El stayed silent through it all, fuming until they threw the picture back at her without regard and left her alone. If she still had her powers, she would have made them regret ever speaking to her. But she doesn’t, so she was left to stew in her emotions instead.
That’s what she’s thinking about now, as she sits on the steps of the new house she shares with the Byers family, miles away from the only home she’s ever known. Hawkins holds a lot of scary and bad memories for her, something Joyce told her is called trauma, and she knows it’s the same thing Hop meant when he talked about the cave. But even though it does, it’s also the only place El has ever felt attached to. It’s where she met Mike, who gave her her first home in the blanket fort in his basement, and gave her the choice of a name. It’s where she met Dustin and Lucas and Max, who showed her what it means to have friends. It’s where she met the family who have so kindly taken her in now, at their own expense. And it’s where she met Hopper, someone who protected her and cared about her and tried to teach her things about the world. Someone she had been starting to see as her father before he was taken away from her.
She misses them all, and some days the pain is so huge and seems so impossible to ignore that it takes all her strength to get out of bed and do the things it takes to be alive. The only reason she musters that energy is that she knows Joyce might let her stay home if she doesn’t leave her room and being home all day is somehow worse. It reminds her of being stuck in the cabin, which reminds her of Hopper, which only magnifies the grief she feels at everything she has lost.
“Hey,” says a voice behind her, and El jumps, startled. It’s Jonathan.
“Hi,” she replies, and he sits down next to her. He doesn’t say anything else, and they keep watching the street.
El thinks that Jonathan always looks nervous, like he’s constantly waiting for something to happen. He’s always curled in on himself. She probably looks a lot like him, it’s no wonder no one at school has doubted he and Will are really her brothers.
“Why did you come outside?” She decides to ask him. Joyce is busy inside and Will is hiding in his room, as he has been all week. It’s a time of bad memories for him, too.
Jonathan shrugs. “I saw you through the window.”
El nods and returns to her silence.
“Do you miss her?” She asks a few minutes later.
Jonathan looks over at her. “Who?”
“Nancy.”
“Oh. Yeah. A lot.”
“Does it get better?”
This is something she has been considering a lot. Each day passes and El doesn’t know how she’s supposed to move on and live her life when they’re all the same. How is she supposed to go on knowing that Hopper is gone and all her friends are far away?
Jonathan doesn’t say anything for a moment, but then he shrugs again. “After a while, it won’t be so hard,” he offers. “I know it’s different for you because of Hop, but one day you’ll remember him and it won’t hurt as much. I even felt sad for a while after my dad left, and he’s an asshole. Hopper loved you. It’s normal.”
El’s not sure how to respond, but Jonathan keeps talking. “I like to look at the stars at night,” he says. There’s something gentle about the quiet way he speaks that makes her think Jonathan is good at making people feel better, so she listens.
“It’s nice because… well, the stars are the same everywhere,” he continues, hugging his knees to his chest and looking up. There’s a hole in the leg of his jeans, she can see. “No matter where someone is, the stars are always there. It helps me feel less lonely to know that the people I miss are looking at the same stars I’m seeing right now.”
El considers that. She knows that it does work that way for people who are still on Earth, but… “What about people who are… gone?” She asks.
Jonathan keeps his eyes trained on the sky. “I don’t know. Nobody can say for sure,” he says after a while. “But I like to think that they’re up there somewhere, and they can see the stars too.”
She nods and doesn’t say anything else, only looking at the stars and thinking about all that Jonathan has told her.
“He would be proud of you, you know,” Jonathan says a few minutes later. “For going to school. For not giving up even after everything that happened, even though we moved away from everyone else.”
“It’s hard,” El replies. “Sometimes I feel so bad I want to stay asleep forever,” she admits. “Do you ever feel that way?”
She isn’t sure why it’s so easy to tell Jonathan these things; things she would have a hard time telling anyone except Mike. Maybe it’s because he’s kind and warm like Joyce, and Joyce is like a mama, but Jonathan is calmer. Talking to him doesn’t make El worry that he might get stressed over it.
He nods. “Some days are really hard,” he agrees. “But like I said before, it’s normal when big changes happen. It’s okay to feel sad, or mad, or whatever else you might feel, okay? What’s important is that you keep going.”
“Why?” It’s a simple question, but she senses that Jonathan understands how loaded it really is. Why should she keep going when almost everything in her life has been bad? Everyone she knows has been affected by her, and none of the bad things that happened to them would have happened if she had never existed. Her mama would still be healthy. Hopper and everyone else who died because of the monsters she let out would still be alive. Will would never have gone to the Upside Down.
“Because you have people around you who care about you and want you to be happy, even if that’s not what you feel,” he responds, turning to look at her. His face looks very serious, like what he’s about to say is very important. “I promise you that one day, you won’t feel as sad. It won’t be tomorrow, and probably not the day after that, either. But that day will come, and you’ll be glad to be there to see it.”
El gives him a small nod and turns her face back up to the sky, swallowing over the pain in her throat. “Okay.”
Jonathan reaches out and squeezes her shoulder lightly as he stands up, and it feels comforting. Not as good as a hug, but good enough. “Come inside soon, okay? It’s cold out here.”
She nods again to acknowledge him and then he goes back inside. She wraps her arms around herself, gripping tightly onto the soft flannel of her shirt. Her gaze trained on the stars twinkling far above her, El lets the sharpness of the tears prickling her eyes out of her. It feels good to let go of everything she’s been holding back all day, but looking at the little pinpricks of light in the sky makes her feel something inexplicable.
It’s a big feeling and she’s not sure what to call it; sadness isn’t right but she isn’t angry either, or happy, or any of the named emotions she’s come to find familiar. It’s something unknowable, something that is making her feel more connected to herself. Maybe, if Hop is somewhere, he’s up there, watching her.
“I miss you,” she says quietly, swallowing again over that painful lump in her throat. She knows that if he could, he would tell her he misses her too. She’d never had the chance to know her mother, but Hopper had started to give her an idea of what having a parent is like. She can almost hear the beeping of the morse code on the radio, taste the whipped cream he’d slather all over her Eggos, see the smile hidden underneath the mustache that made him look so grumpy all the time, and she cries harder for what she’s lost.
All the while, the stars continue to shine, and they manage to make El feel less alone. Jonathan is right, they are all always the same. Something about that idea makes her feel like she isn’t as far away from the people she misses after all, and when she goes inside and tucks herself into bed, she looks out her window and imagines her friends looking at the stars with her, and Hopper watching them all living each day from the spaces in between.
