Finished up "The Perfect Child" by Lucinda Berry this morning! Rating: ☆☆☆☆ Pages: 352 TW found on slide three. Overall very good! It's a well written story that is easy to read. If it was for the holidays, this is book I could see myself finishing in a day or so. The tw were hard to describe for this book so I wanted to touch on them a bit here. The book definitely touches on child ab*se with Janie (the child the main characters adopt). However it is never really described presently or in depth. It is a past event. Really how it is shown is through Janie's trauma symptoms. She has a lot of behaviors that are typical to child ab*se victims. This book NEVER actively describes ab*se towards a child. The second tw, I didn't know how to describe it! But it triggers me haha. The past few books I have read had a "husband doesn't trust/believe/support wife" trope. Crazy shits happening and the husband makes the wife feel crazy. Gaslighting, disbelieving, or otherwise just downplaying a situation or thing the wife brings to him with concern. It drove me nuts in "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires"! ///// What I really love is the author! Lucinda Berry is a trauma psychologist and a leading researching in childhood trauma. You definitely feel that with this book! It is educated and knows the source material well. It's not poorly written or made up. You can tell that Berry put her experience into this book. And because of that it feels like it's written respectfully/tastefully considering the type of content. //// #bookrecommendations #booktok #bookclub #bookreview #bookstagram #bookaddict #horrorbooks #horrorbookstagram #horrorbook #horrorbookclub (at New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClaFSKjOacc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thoughts on Paul Tremblay's "Survivor Song"
Inspired by a dear friend (Kimberlee Yoonmee Hampson) who posts book blurb reviews featuring her cat, Pickle, I figured I'd get back into the swing of posting books I've read that I love or just really haunt me...like this one.
I finished Paul Tremblay's "Survivor Song" a few weeks ago. It's about a situation very similar to the world we live in now with Covid-19, but replace it with a highly contagious strain of rabies that has jumped from animals to humans via being bitten. The main character, Natalie, is nearly 38 weeks pregnant with her first baby and very excited if naturally anxious at becoming a new Mom. Within the first 20 pages she and her husband are brutally attacked by an infected man who bites them both. After her husband succumbs to his injuries, Natalie grabs her hospital bag, shuts the infected person in her house, and drives to the nearest medical facility to get what might be a life saving vaccination. On the way she phones her former roommate and pediatrician friend Ramola to meet her there for support. Together their journey takes place over the course of a few hours as they try to find a place to get Natalie help and deliver her baby before she becomes infected. The tension and suspense do not abate for the rest of the book. There are some humorous parts in it, including many tongue in cheek references to The Walking Dead and zombie jokes from two Rozencrantz and Guildenstren-esque teenagers that Natalie and Ramola meet and team up with along the way that give the story brief moments of comic relief.
I didn't realize how much this book would affect me since the world building was so similar to experience of living during Covid-19: the fear, the anxiety, the worry of infection and positive cases. I hate using this phrase but in this instance it's true. I held my breath for what felt like the entire book. The very first few lines read, "This is not a fairy tale, this is a song". But whose Survivor Song is being sung?
The true impact of this novel didn't hit me until I woke up this morning from a nightmare where I was Natalie in this story, minus the pregnancy. I had been infected and was trying to make my way back to my apartment alive before my first symptoms showed. I had help along the way from friends but feared any checkpoints, temperature checks, or a stranger standing too close to me. I can't accurately encapsulate the claustrophobia, paranoia, and fear I felt or the instinctual drive to make my way back to my apartment at any cost, encountering as few people as possible, to wait for a cure or possibly die, in a place familiar to me.
I think when our dreams begin to reflect our reality, so much so that we can't tell the difference between the two, we may be living an actual nightmare.
I highly recommend this book and also that you read it in full daylight, or at least with all the lights in your house on. Afterward you might want to watch some GBBO (or your preferred mindless self-indulgent show of choice) or cuddle a pet for some comfort.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐A disturbing tale worthy of Clive Barker Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2020 Horror comes in three basic varieties: creepy, terrifying, and horrifying. The best stories, the ones that keep you up at night and haunt your dreams for days and sometimes years, are those that combine all three, each building on the other, interchangeable, moving the reader like some otherworldly beast through the nightscape of the author’s mind. One of the best at this, in my opinion, was the late, great Clive Barker. His stories have always been both well-written and profoundly disturbing. Sean Herr’s Hush Little Baby is eerily reminiscent. Make no mistake. That’s not hyperbole. This story is disturbing. If you’re not prepared for that, then I suggest you find something else to read. But if you are prepared for it, if you’re ready to be horrified, to be haunted by a well-written tale of true horror, then Hush Little Baby is right up your own personal Elm Street. Warning thus suitably given, I award this tale of the deepest, darkest macabre FIVE STARS. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go hide underneath the covers.
