Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
My mind is reeling. Like what the fuck. This one was so good. I feel like it totally just knocked out all the others and claimed my favourite spot.
The writing was atmospheric, immersive, really descriptive. I loved it. It was tense and a little creepy. The characters were amazing. I totally recommend using the audible narration along with it. This story was perfect for a short story, and I think this set my new standard for horror short stories.
Not done talking about #halloweenreads tbh and this series is perfect. Like Supernatural meets American Gods meets American Horror Story. An urban legend ghost (hitchhiking dead prom date from the 50s) and her adventures through small town America and its underworld layers. Creepy, unexpected, anthology-ish but trending toward a larger narrative arc (great for bite-size reading if you only have time for a chapter!) and sits nicely in that “horror aesthetic but not too scared to walk to the bathroom at night” zone for me 😂👻🎃🖤 #horrorbooks #spookyreads #seananmcguire #ghostroads https://www.instagram.com/p/CkjUzjyyMsD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Let's be completely honest here: one of the most insidious horrors of It, one of King's most famous (and infamous) novels, is, surprisingly, not the evil killer man-eating clown. Instead, is the scars that abuse, both physical and emotional, leave on children and how they stay with them until adulthood, visible or not.
Book of Night is the adult debut by Holly Black. I would call this urban fantasy/horror. There is a girl, Charlie, with a past. There are people, called gloamists, who can manipulate their shadows. There are people without shadows and shadows without people. (They’re Blights and are dangerous) Charlie has to find a missing book or bad things will happen. The story and background building took a while to get into. The final act was better and there was a surprising reveal. I kept thinking of Peter Pan (Wendy sewing his shadow) but there was never any mention of that. I was also reminded of The Book of M (where everyone loses their shadow) The whole story felt weird and I had some interesting dreams. 💭 Read the acknowledgments to see some interesting comments from Black about the writing process for this book. As always I love Stephen King’s writings. I loved this story and while it didn’t help this weird funk I’m in; it was a good immersive, atmospheric read.
The plot was good; if not fantasy-esque. I really enjoyed the plot and the characters. This one started out slow but it picked up around the first third mark.
This is a nice coming of age story of a young boy who ends up working for his grumpy, loner, elderly neighbour. Our MC ends up saving his neighbour’s life; and as a result he ends up volunteering to watch the neighbour’s elderly dog, Radar. Radar was a good girl and I loved the MASH reference. Some parts were slow and a bit lacklustre; but overall this book is a wild ride and a really good book that’s very solid.
Definitely recommend this book whether you’re an old Stephen King fan or a new one or haven’t read from him yet.
