2023 on track to be world's hottest year on record, temperatures exceed 1.5C above pre-industrial levels for first time

Welp, this is the start of mass extinction in the eyes of the environmental experts.

We will either let the fossil fuel industry and all it's bootlickers kill us or we'll have to get to them soon.

This year is now almost certain to become Earth's warmest on record after a hot July and August saw global temperatures reach the Paris Agreement target of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This is the first time the 1.5C threshold has been passed for more than one month, and only the second time it has ever been exceeded, behind February 2016. Data released last week from Copernicus, a branch of the European Union Space Programme, shows August was 1.59C warmer than 1850-1900 levels, following a 1.6C increase in July. The recent records have now lifted the year-to-date global temperature to the end of August to 1.35C above pre-industrial levels, just 0.01C behind 2016 — the current record holder, according to Copernicus data.

this post isn't very good news, and I'm sorry about that. My condition has been fluctuating in this past week and I fear it's taking a turn down again. On top of that, I've been trying to catch up with medical bills and dealing with the associated paperwork. Behind the scenes, fic editing has slowed down to a near halt because a lot of the fic ended up having to be rewritten last second. We're almost at arc 2 (this first arc isn't very big) and I have very little written for it; that is to say, I would've had to take a hiatus anyway to try building back up a buffer for it.

Since it was going to happen anyway (regardless of it happening now or later) I've decided to take a (hopefully small, god willing) hiatus now instead to focus on my health and the responsibilities I've been putting off, on top of editing the rest of arc 1 and building that buffer back up. I don't know exactly when fic posting will start up again, but I can only express that I don't want to be away for too long. I'll still be around for messages, and I'll try to post status updates as they come in (those will probably become the new weekly/biweekly posts instead of fic posts until I have enough fic to start posting regularly again).

Every summer in the desert it's like the desert has a fever and everybody waits for the fever to break (monsoon) and the longer it takes the more the tension rises in everybody and the hotter everything gets and the more miserable everybody is -- so bad that even people visiting can feel it and ask what's wrong

And the ones who lives here full time spit out lines like "it's a dry heat haha" and squint through the air that burns your eyeballs and the skin of your face even when you're not in direct sunlight

There's more violence and accidents and road rage incidents and pets getting lost and you wonder is this the year the fever never breaks

And then the first haboob comes rolling in looking like something out of a horror movie and blankets everything in sandy dirt but it brings a storm and rain and clouds and it's terrible because there's residual heat left in everything for days even after the clouds come

And it's wet and hot and awful and the tension is bleeding away but still there

You wait because you've been fooled before by clouds that only bring a few minutes of sprinkles and this year it happened three times before the real monsoon started

And when it kept raining and the clouds stayed for three days and the heat finally finally finally backed off to the point where pool decking meant to stay cool "no matter how hot it is outside" doesn't burn your feet today and you finally take a breath

The pools are still so hot it feels like bathwater and it's not even refreshing but it's okay because the monsoon has started and everybody can breathe again

It'll get hot again and it'll still be horrible but the fever broke and everybody can feel it
