If you’re HOTD starved, might I recommend one of my favorite series, The Hatfields and the McCoys?

It has

-a big ‘ol family feud set in America right after the civil war

-hillbillies galore

-a pig plays a large role in the feud lmao (if I’m lying I’m dyin they really did feud in part over a pig)

-there’s even a hotheaded, silver haired son with a put out eye! (Cap Hatfield, he still has the eye but it’s scarred over and white which looks pretty badass ngl)

-The show is fictional but the feud is actually real and documented American history! Neato

-The southern accents y’all

-if you don’t like the show and reading is more your thing, I recommend opting to read The Coffin Quilt by Ann Rinaldi which is one of my all time faves

But yah I really like this show and remember watching the premiere on the history channel

Already seen a lot of people use the Cain and Abel archetype to describe Aegon and Aemond’s fratricidal relationship, when more importantly I’d argue that they represent an inversion of the trope.

Traditionally, the tale represents settled lifestyles (Cain the farmer) overcoming nomadic Neolithic customs (Abel the shepherd) through the allegory of fraternal murder- aka, the Cainist cultural revolution defeating Abel’s tradition. Given Aemond is the one who, possessed by jealousy over his brother and a desire for control, turns to fratricide, one would expect him to be characterized as the homicidal Cain-figure, and Aegon as the unsuspecting Abel-figure. However, due to Aemond’s continual fulfillment of tradition and the status quo, and reliance upon Valyrian tradition as the basis for his claim, ideologically-speaking he’s a closer match to Abel. Not to mention, given he also flaunts the qualities which his father continually attempted to emulate (dragon-rider, scholar, fluent Valyrian speaker, pious, etc) - he closer matches the image of the father’s ‘prized son’, we can argue that the Viserys-Aemond bond closer matches the God-Abel dynamic.

Conversely, Aegon is constantly affirmed to be a break from ruling tradition - from a psychological standpoint he departs from the archetypal image of the ruler by being shown to be melancholic and tempestuous, not to mention alienated from his paternal culture and language; whilst from an ideological standpoint, he openly argues against the practice of Valyrian sibling incest and advocates for an embrace of monarchial socialism, departing from the wishes of his advisors, and the traditional customs of the kingdom. Thus, Aegon embodies a cultural revolution, and aligns better with Cain.

The Cain-Abel reading of Aegon and Aemond’s actions doesn’t work out because their fratricidal actions align Aemond with Cain as an antagonist, and Aegon with Abel as a victim - but their ideologies match Aemond with Abel as traditionalists, and Aegon with Cain as revolutionaries. One can make the argument that the analogy still works, due to it being a deliberate inversion of the tale, with tradition striking down any act of upheaval, as opposed to revolution destroying tradition, but I feel that there isn’t enough evidence to support that decision. Naturally, creatives always reflect on Cain and Abel to some extent due to its prevalence as a touchstone of fratricide in the arts, but due to caveats like the action-ideology dissonance and the lack of a father figure endorsing Aemond (or either of them for that matter), amongst others, I think it’s a tenuous stance on its own.

so beautiful. amazing story, full of emotion and color. very cool mixed animation style, combining 2D and 3D. insane use of color theory, and full of detail and depth. 11/10.

listen. you don’t have to watch any other puss in boots movies to like this one. you don’t even need to like puss in boots. another 2D and 3D animation mix, and it’s gorgeous. hilarious, and very, very good depictions of a lot of things (no spoilers). plenty of adult jokes packed in, too.

Hey! Can you recommend any good historical non fictional book about the anarchy? I tried to look for one but i don’t really know where to start

Okay, so this is a non-exhaustive list, and I tried to choose a good variety, but unlike say, the Tudors, there actually are not as many books specifically on the Anarchy as you might think! That said, here are a few:

She-Wolves, by Helen Castor so this one is not specifically about the Anarchy, but rather about powerful women and how they obtained, wielded, and held onto power pre-Elizabeth I. It does have a good section about Empress Matilda, and overall it's just a really good read if you want to understand women's power in the middle ages.

The White Ship: Conquest, Anarchy, and the Wrecking of Henry I's Dream, by Charles Spenser. This one basically follows the life of Henry I, the shipwreck that killed his son and heir, and the succession crisis an civil war that followed. It's relatively short for everything that it covers, but very readable in that it does not get too bogged down in detail.

Matilda: Empress, Queen, Warrior, by Catherine Hanley. This is a really well written biography of Empress Matilda. It's written for a lay audience rather than for academics, and covers a lot of Matilda's battle tactics and strategies, as well as covering a lot about medieval life in genera, including attitudes towards women, and why Matilda's claim was contested in spite of her claim being indisputably stronger than Stephen's (who was not her brother, but her cousin).

Matilda: Queen Consort, Queen Mother, and Lady of the English, by Marjorie Chibnall is another Matilda biography that @branwendaughterofllyr recommends. I haven't read this one myself but Branwen has good taste in non-fiction so I trust her judgment!

King Stephen, by Edmund King. To round things out, this is biography of King Stephen from the Yale University "English Monarchs" series. There aren't a lot of books out there that deal solely with Stephen, and Edmund King is probably the world's foremost scholar on his reign. This biography is a fair and I'd say mostly sympathetic treatment of Stephen. Definitely worth a read.
