Katherine Johnson was an American mathematician who worked at NASA for 35 years, calculating orbital mechanics for human spaceflight. She was one of the first Black women to work as a NASA scientist, and in 1962 was specifically requested by astronaut John Glenn to verify the Friendship 7 flight calculations before he lifted off. Mary Anning was a 19th century fossilist and influential figure in paleontology. She makes up a small piece of a much larger project I’m working on.
