The three missing zoldycks.

It has been a widely known fact that Maha is the most unknown zoldyck in the bunch. Which I find that assumption to be actually false. Granted, the guy is a mystery just as much as the Dark Continent itself but he’s not the only one in the family who is deemed as mysterious. All we know about the guy is that he’s stand-offish, is an enhancer according to the Hunter’s Guide and doesn’t frequently interact with his own family.

Besides him, we also have Zigg Zoldyck and Zeno’s wife. Yes, Zeno’s wife has been mentioned only once, very early in the story.

When Gon, Kurapika and Leorio get on the tour bus for Kukuroo Mountain, Coco Loo (the bus guide) mentions that the family currently consists of five siblings, the parents, a set of grandparents, and a great-grandfather.

We know Maha couldn’t have possibly been the great-grandfather of the family because in this small diagram made by Zeno, we can see Maha positioned above the great-grandfather which makes him the great-great-grandfather of the family instead.

Maha is not only NOT mentioned in the numeration of Coco Loo but his position in the family relationship diagram being labelled as “basically untouched” encourages the fact that he is laid aside from the family.

As for Zigg, he has been mentioned by Coco Loo’s numeration as the “great-grandfather” and Zeno’s wife as a set with Zeno when Coco said “a set of grandparents”. Coco Loo has also specified in her explanation that the composition of the Zoldyck family is a recent one meaning that the members she just enumerated are currently alive.

Maha’s existence and place in the family has strangely not been stated by Coco Loo almost as if he wasn’t even alive to be mentioned and yet, we saw him fully active and well when he joined Kalluto and Illumi’s assassinations of the Ten Dons.

Whether it was Maha’s choice to be cast aside from the family or not is up for debate.

When it comes to Zigg, all we know about him is that he was the one responsible for bringing the calamity Ai from the Dark Continent back to the known world which must’ve slowly gained consciousness as the generations went one by one. (For this topic, I considered Zigg to be the great-grandfather of the family since he seems pretty young in this panel while Netero is an old man compared to him.)

We don’t know where he currently is, all we know is that he is still alive but NOT present in the zoldyck family relationship diagram.

As for Zeno’s wife, she remains a complete enigma.

We’re 400 chapters deep in the manga and we don’t have a clue on who she is, how she looks like, where she is, what is she like and especially what is her connection with the family. Not only that, but she is such a mystery in fact that we don’t even know her name or her relationship with her husband Zeno. You’d think that for being the grandmother of the family you’d have a place in the zoldyck family relationship diagram and yet she’s nowhere to be found. She doesn’t even have a circle of her own with a heart line directed towards Zeno like how Silva and Kikyo’s line looked. All we know about her, is that she is alive thanks to Coco Loo’s explanation of the family composition.

So in short, here are the three missing zoldycks ranked from the most mysterious (1) to the least mysterious (3).

3. Zigg Zoldyck

(I chose to rank Zigg as the least mysterious zoldyck since we know more things about him than his other vague relatives like who his allies are and what he accomplished.)

PS: Also I should mention that Zeno’s wife’s silhouette in the anime doesn’t count as a hint on what she could look like since the manga never showed her design.

What Happened to Zigg Zoldyck? (THEORY)

Does anyone else wonder what ever happened to Zigg Zoldyck? As far as we know, he's the only Zoldyck that traveled to the dark continent and lived to tell the tale.

But he didn't come back alone.

When the Zoldycks discovered the existence of Nanika inside Alluka it was many, many years after Zigg ventured to the dark continent. This entity lived inside its host (Zigg) and was undetected by the Zoldycks for years, until finally gaining consciousness and made its presence known within Alluka. Hypothetically, if my child was possessed by a dangerous spirit the first thing i'd want to do is exorcise it and separate it from my kid, but the Zoldycks haven't figured out how to do that and neither expressed the intention of doing so. Whether its because they have a limited amount of knowledge of Nanika or its theoretically impossible to actually separate them. Everything the Zoldycks know about Nanika and its wish granting ability was initially through Killua and then later on through trial and error experiments. Basically, nothing came from Zigg. The guy who unknowingly, yet presumably brought this entity back with him from the dark continent. There was never 'Zigg said...' or 'Zigg encountered this creature and then...' In fact, no one in the family ever mentions Zigg by name or mentions anything he has done, just as how they never mentioned Alluka and kept her in the dark.

Zigg isn't mentioned in the zoldyck family tree except this one told to us to us by Zeno. Zeno is talking about Maha in this case, but he acknowledges Zigg's existence, his own father.

Which we don't get in this tree.

If Maha is still alive, then i'm going to assume Zigg still is too. Which begs the question, where is he? And here is my theory!

We know Zigg traveled from the Dark Continent with Nanika, but he could have come back with other things that jeopardized him, and potentially his family. We know of the five threats, and Ai is one of them, the gaseous life form that desires codependence (nanika). One, Zigg is still alive but has gone insane as the years progressed (due to factors such as being the host for Nanika.) If he is insane, and is incapable of communicating with his family, then that's why they had to find things out on their own without his help. Two, Zigg was affected by another one of the five threats and they trapped him under Kukuroo Mountain just like they did with Alluka. Hellbell is a creature that infects its prey with homicidal desire, if it infected Zigg then Zigg would be the threat to his own family, and many more. Without knowing how the hellbell affects his sanity, he would be placed in solitary confinement without means of escape for everyone's protection. Three, the simplest and unlikeliest theory, he left the family of his own volition and marches to the beat of his own drum!

In conclusion, we're working with a small amount of info, but i don't think Zigg left the dark continent unscathed and is possibly confined in a similar situation like Alluka was in. But him not being addressed by his family, nor in the family tree seems like they don't acknowledge his presence, or don't look favorably on him. For whatever reason. With Alluka, yes she was a threat, but the family still saw her as something to gain/to take advantage of. With Zigg, the cons may outweigh the pros. And he may be a bigger threat to the family than Alluka.

🔯Zoldyck Family HCs🔯

I wish this had been explored more in the actual manga, because to me the Zoldyck family is one of the most intriguing things in HxH.

We did get this chart which is very interesting, but I wanted to expand on it with a couple more headcanons and speculations. Doesn't include Maha, Zigg or Grandma Zoldyck cause there's too little info on them (Seriously Zeno, where do you keep your wife?)

🪭Kalluto🪭

Starting with Kalluto because he's the youngest and also gets very little time to shine.

It is commonly agreed that he cares about Killua a lot and wishes he'd pay attention to him, and I think so too.

His relationship with Illumi is possibly one of mentor and apprentice, they go on missions together and Illumi supervises him to make sure he carries out assassinations properly, without toying with his victims too much.

We don't see him interacting with Milluki at all aside from flashbacks, but the two might have a pretty positive relationship. I think it still means a lot to Kalluto that his shut-in brother would take time out of his day to go on walks and play with him, even if that hasn't happened in a while.

As for his relationship with Silva and Zeno, I do like the idea of both father and grandpa being proud of Kalluto for mastering Nen at such a young age, though Silva might be a bit disappointed that Kalluto disobeyed him and became part of the Phantom Troupe.

🧸Alluka🧸

Such a sweetheart aaaa I wanna see more of her and Killua's future adventures.

Ever since her ability was discovered by the other members of the family, Alluka's either been used to get something (Looking at you, Milluki), or feared. Silva and Kikyo definitely fear her powers, and Zeno probably does too. Though... I have a weird feeling that unlike the rest of the family, Zeno would be like Killua and at least respect Alluka's pronouns, if she likes 'she/her', Zeno doesn't see the problem with referring to her as a girl.

I think Alluka on the other hand really wants to love the members of her family, despite how horribly they've treated her. She probably doesn't even understand why they all became so cautious around her at one point.

The only family member that Alluka does not like is Illumi for... pretty obvious reasons. Illumi isn't subtle at all with his desire to control her and her powers; plus, Illumi's hurt Killua the most, I don't think she could ever be okay with someone who's hurt her big brother so much (even by Zoldyck standards).

🪀Killua🪀

Not much to say about Killua since we see him interact with most of his family a bit more in-depth... aside from Kalluto-

Killua has definitely always favored Alluka over Kalluto, despite how much the youngest Zoldyck strives to get his attention. This is probably because of how close Kalluto is to his mom.

Killua finds Kikyo annoying, and definitely doesn't trust her, so since Kalluto spends a lot of time with their mother, by proxy, Killua can't bring himself to trust his younger brother either.

Aside from Alluka, whom he obviously trusts deeply, the other member of the family he trusts the most is probably his grandpa; Zeno clearly favors him and seems to be more supportive of Killua's choices compared to the rest of his family.

🎮Milluki🎮

Milluki my beloved, how I wish you weren't just the butt of a joke 90% of the time.

Physically speaking, he's probably the weakest Zoldyck besides Alluka, so he's most likely afraid of the other men in the family, and would definitely not want to get on their bad side.

He obeys and respects both Silva and Zeno, but I also think Milluki would like to be treated like Killua by his grandpa, that's why he shares his invention ideas with him; he wishes Zeno would praise him some.

Milluki is 100% a mama's boy, he cares about her so much, he definitely had the strongest reaction out of everyone when his mother's safety was threatened by Nanika's powers. Despite this, Kikyo doesn't seem to give him any particularly special treatment, again, that is reserved for Killua.

He's most definitely also the unlucky middle child, I think he was definitely put to the side once Killua was born; his family fully focused on Kil since he's the heir, and left Milluki to kinda do his own thing. I feel like this consequentially brought him to be jealous of Killua and all the attention he gets.

I swear he's even worse off than Kalluto, cause at least he's got his mother's love, Milluki's basically neglected even by Zoldyck standards.

🪡Illumi🪡

Man's the family's workaholic, you can't change my mind, he's also a little fucked up, but we love him for it.

He definitely cares about his whole family in his own twisted way. That includes Milluki too, they were the first two Zoldyck siblings so until Killua was born, they most definitely spent a lot of time together. Illumi doesn't really understand his brother, but he humors him.

His relationship with Kikyo is never really explored, but I see them as being definitely close, not as close as she is with Kalluto, but close. They share the same mindset when it comes to Killua. Illumi was also her first child, so she definitely poured her heart and soul into training him into being the perfect assassin, and it definitely shows.

Illumi's dynamic with his father and grandfather is definitely one of mutual respect, they may not agree on everything, but they trust each other's strength. Silva also appreciates Illumi's dedication to the family's business.

👒Kikyo👒

M'lady- okay no girl needs to take a chill pill, her fashion tho, on point.

Obviously her view of love is completely warped, growing up in Meteor City and marrying a world-renowned assassin didn't do her mental health many favors. But just like Illumi, she does love her kids deeply in a really twisted way.

She plays favorites, Killua and Kalluto are the ones she cares about the most, and with how dismissive of Milluki she is, he's probably her least favorite, kinda tragic since Milluki loves his mother a lot... but then we have Illumi, where does he stand? Kikyo cares about her first born child of course, she's very proud of him, and trusts him a lot with keeping Killua in check, since they seem to share opinions on how he should be trained. She wishes he'd spend more time with her for sure.

Her opinion however is way too often brushed off by Silva, not because she's a woman, but because she's not been raised like a Zoldyck, she doesn't fully know their ways, so she's not seen as a valid voice. It's an unfair treatment, and it really pisses her off.

☄️Silva☄️

True winner of the 'Father of the Year' award, along with Ging, great job you two.

Silva honestly has evil mastermind vibes, he cares about Killua, but also wants to constantly control him and test him in his own way (the needle was a massive proof of that). He's just a lot more subtle with it compared to Illumi and Kikyo.

He loves his wife, no doubt, even if he doesn't show it very often, I think the man is prone to small displays of love, and definitely shows it more with his actions than his words. (Him agreeing to let Alluka out of her room because he doesn't want Kikyo to die is definitely the biggest display of this we've seen canonically, he's aware of how dangerous Alluka's powers could be, but he still chose to risk the consequences of that over sacrificing his wife).

His relationship with his other kids is not really explored that much, but I believe he's mostly satisfied with all of them. I don't think he's super disappointed in Milluki either, but he definitely doesn't expect much of him, he does wish he'd take things more seriously.

🐲Zeno🐲

My favorite anime old man! I really wish people would pay more attention to him, he's cool as hell.

Zeno is probably the most chill man in the family, maybe cause he's old, but he's definitely the least likely to snap back at any of his family members.

He has a very strong set of morals, with him not wanting to cause any unnecessary deaths and all. I feel like because of this, he silently disapproves of Illumi's ways, especially regarding his Needle People, and the older brother's desire to control Killua.

Zeno doesn't really think much of Kikyo, he acknowledges her skills and such, but doesn't really go out of his way to interact with her. These two have definitely had their disagreements, mostly because Zeno tends to act on his own without consulting anyone, let alone her, which inevitably angers Kikyo.

He is quite proud of all his grandchildren, even if he's mostly focused on Killua. Much like Silva, he is happy that Kalluto mastered Nen at such a young age. He also sees more potential in Milluki, but wishes he was more committed to the family's business and used his genius to its full potential.

GON GETS HIS NEN BACK

Theory 1:

- Nanika helps Gon to get his nen back

Theory 2:

- Bisky comes back to train Gon even and without nen

Theory 3:

- Leorio (due to the fact that he is a doctor) finds a way for him to get his nen back (from the zodiacs)

Theory 4:

- Gon goes to the Dark Continent without nen and he gets it back when he's there

THE FIGHT WITH TSERRIEDNICH

Theory 1

- Due to the fact that Kurapika definitely can't fight Tserriednich alone, we get the long waited Kurapika & Chrollo team up.

Now, Togashi has mentioned that at the end, Kurapika will die but he will die with the Phantom Troupe.

The team up theory can be divided into categories.

1) Tserriednich killed a phantom troupe member and that's why Chrollo teamed up with Kurapika

2) Chrollo and Kurapika make an equal exchange. If Chrollo helps Kurapika kill Tserriednich, Kurapika will help Chrollo kill Hisoka (given the fact that Kurapika can use his full nen against Hisoka and Illumi)

And the end of the team up, in my opinion will lead to the death of both Chrollo and Kurapika just like Togashi said. (and Tserriednich's death)

I know it's pretty improbable or the answer it's so simple that unnecessary to be addressed but I'll love to know more about the first generations of the Zoldycks.

To be more explicit, I would like to know who started the "assassins doesn't need friends" and their reasons.

Are Zigg and Maha the same person?

Or are they completely separate people?

Ever since chapter 344 was released, many fans (myself included) have had a lot of questions related to the Dark Continent.

Not only were we very intrigued by the possibility of having thousands of mysterious and dangerous creatures roaming on that continent, but fans were also especially interested in the only known survivors who have returned from these dark lands through an unrecorded expedition. Those survivors were Isaac Netero, Linnet Audoble, and Zigg Zoldyck.

These three have answered a few questions ever since they were revealed to have been involved with the Dark Continent like how it explains Netero’s incredible old age and powerful Nen and how it influenced him to push his limits as well as Linnet’s connection to Netero when she said “I just want Netero to come back to life and be chairman once again.” (Chapter 329). But between the three survivors, only one of them stands out like a sore thumb. And that is none other than the infamous Zoldyck, Zigg.

Not much is known about Zigg.

Unlike the other two, where we know their current status, their relationship with one another and their somewhat revealed personality, Zigg doesn’t seem to have been seen, mentioned, or talked about very often. We have never heard his name until now, and his relationship with Netero and Linnet seems to be unclear.

His presence with the other two hunters looks misplaced given the fact that he had no business being with them since he’s an assassin and the heir of the Zoldyck business as well. What kind of assassination job would would he have been hired to do over there? No one lives in the Dark Continent. Even if there were individuals living in the Dark Continent, how could they have reached him to contact him? How would they have even known his existence? Due to the huge improbability that the Dark Continent would have residents AND would know Zigg, this would only push the stronger narrative that Zigg had gone with Netero and Linnet on his own accord.

We also know that he was the one who brought Nanika, a dark continent calamity known as ‘Ai’, back to the known world since Zigg was the only Zoldyck known to have gone to the unknown land which would explain why the family would have a calamity living in one of their members (aka Alluka). Whether he realized that Nanika came back with him or not is up for debate.

So in short, all we know of Zigg is that he was a former zoldyck heir (based on his silver gene), went with Netero and Linnet to the Dark Continent, and brought Nanika back with him.

Now here’s where things get tricky.

People have noticed that Zigg had a striking resemblance to another zoldyck by the name of Maha.

Maha appeared in chapter 100, assisting Illumi and Kalluto in assassinating the Ten Dons back in the Yorknew City arc.

Due to his short stature and smile, this has led some fans to believe that Zigg was in fact Maha but as an old man.

But is he really the same man or are they actually two separate people?

When it comes to finding out Zigg’s identity, the fandom divided itself into two groups:

Group 1: Those who believe Zigg and Maha are the same person.

Group 2: Those who believe Zigg and Maha are separate people.

The two sides each have their reasons for believing their claims and have proof to back them up (please keep in mind that some of those infos have been taken out of the hxh databook).

Group 1: Zigg and Maha are the same person.

Proof:

Despite his old age, Maha still bears some resemblance to Zigg. The two men have a tiny nose, a wide Cheshire Cat smile, and slitted eyes. He had met Netero back when the two were in their prime according to the hxh databook. Since the hxh databook might have been very outdated, some infos could have been retconned by Togashi. The name ‘Maha’ that was written for him in the book might have been one of those pieces of information that got erased from canon to replace it with the new name ‘Zigg’ instead.

Character explanation:

His body had incredibly deteriorated during the years due to having gone to the Dark Continent (as well as being a Zoldyck since their genes make them live long) which would explain his hair loss with the inclusion of his eyebrows as well. According to Killua’s family chart, Maha is labelled as the ‘untouched one’ which is odd since he’s the strongest Nen user in the world now that Netero has deceased so the least the other zoldyck members could do is bear some respect or admiration for him. But Maha is not even mentioned or implied to be part of the family. Coco Loo, one of the zoldyck guides, doesn’t even mention him as the great-great-grandfather and instead only says “The family presently consists of five siblings, the parents, a set of grandparents, and a great-grandfather — assassins all!” (Chapter 39), excluding him completely from the enumeration.

So since his existence wasn’t brought up to the public, this means that the zoldyck family is trying to ignore him. We can confirm this to be the case if we look at Killua’s family chart: Maha is completely untouched.

The reason for his untouchability is because he was the one responsible for bringing a calamity back home by the name of Ai (later known as Nanika). Silva and Zeno are aware of where Nanika came from because Silva told Killua this about Alluka: “Something that came from another place. Something that came out of the darkness” (Chapter 321). Whether Maha brought Ai back willingly or not did not matter. He got shunned by his own family for going to a place that wasn’t meant for an assassin and Maha paid the price for it.

Group 2: Zigg and Maha are separate people.

Proof:

It has first been confirmed by the databook (and then by the manga) that Netero and Maha are the same age. From Zeno’s explanation about Netero, we see a Zoldyck chart about the silver zoldyck heirs from oldest to recent.

As we can see from the chart, it indicates to us that everyone else besides Maha (and his son) has grown up to always see Netero as an old man. We can then assume that Maha should have been the only one who saw what Netero looked like when he was younger. Therefore, the panel where we see Netero and Zigg together shows how their appearances look irregular and different from one another. If Maha, who is the same age as Netero, was Zigg then he should’ve looked much bigger and older. Zigg in actuality looks like a child in contrast to Netero’s appearance.

So given the fact that Maha and Netero are supposed to be the same age while Zigg here clearly looks like he’s far younger than Netero, this shows us that Zigg and Maha are not the same person and that Zigg knew Netero through Maha, his father.

Character explanation:

Zigg is the son of Maha Zoldyck. Thanks to his father’s connection with Netero, Zigg was able to meet Netero and partner up with the older man and another hunter by the name of Linnet to go to the Dark Continent together. Zigg’s main objective of going to a place where no assassination was needed should have made him refuse the offer that Netero gave him. And yet, he went along with the two hunters because he was curious enough to see if the dark lands had anything useful or special that could benefit the zoldyck family in any way. On the journey, he eventually found a calamity by the name of Ai. Whether he brought Ai back willingly or not did not matter. When he returned home, he got shunned by his own family and his father Maha for going to a place that wasn’t meant for an assassin and Zigg paid the price for it. Over the years, Zigg’s appearance had changed and did not stay the same.

This has led him to mature more but in time has led him to disappear under mysterious circumstances. Unlike Maha, his place and role in the zoldyck family chart made by Killua is nonexistent but has been mentioned by the zoldyck guide Coco Loo when she labelled him as ‘the great-grandfather’.

So to conclude both groups:

Group 1: Believes Zigg and Maha ARE the same man because Maha met Netero when they were both in their prime. The hxh databook was too old and got retconned which changed Maha’s name to ‘Zigg’. He was untouched by the family because he brought the calamity Ai into the family, and his existence was never mentioned by the zoldyck guide therefore the public won’t know that the zoldycks have one more member.

Group 2: Believes Zigg and Maha are NOT the same man because Zigg and Netero are not the same age according to the small flashback. Zigg knew Netero from Maha. Zigg went to the Dark Continent with Netero due to his young mind thinking he would find something useful to bring back to benefit his family. His appearance and name haven’t been mentioned by his family as a way to keep him in the dark. They have only mentioned to the public that he does exist however.

As you can see from the two sides, this situation is very confusing. On one hand, it gives us a lot to speculate which group is right and which one is wrong. But on the other hand, this is just very odd to see. Both sides have good reasons to believe that Zigg is such a confusing yet interesting character. Whether you’re on a side, in none of these two groups, or have simply made a theory about this on your own, you can’t ignore the fact that Zigg’s motive for going to the Dark Continent seems to be illogical due to his job.

I personally believe that Zigg IS Maha but not for all the reasons that group 1 believes in.

Maha and Zigg being one and the same would explain why he’s labelled as ‘the untouched one’ in the family chart. The chart had been made from Killua’s point of view of his own family so it would make sense if he doesn’t understand why Maha is labelled this way. Maha had gone to the Dark Continent with Netero and Linnet for one reason only: out of curiosity in the hopes of finding something that could benefit his family in any way. I would find it very unlikely that he went to the Dark Continent just because “Netero told him to” or because “he just wanted to have fun”. These probabilities are close to zero since 1) Maha is a Zoldyck, so why would he listen to Netero just because he told him to? And 2) We clearly see that Maha is still working as an assassin so he couldn’t have possibly gone to the Dark Continent to take a break from it all. He’s not Killua.

Therefore, I would have to say from my personal take that Zigg and Maha ARE the same zoldyck.

(but despite that, I still like to call him by separate names lol. I just like to think that calling that man by his ‘Zigg’ name would mean his zoldyck self before he went to the Dark Continent while calling him by the ‘Maha’ name is just him maturing after he went through the Dark Continent. I like to separate these two men depending on the era of the time even though I think they’re the same character. Does that make sense? Of course not.)

I like to think when people meet the DC trio they always try to talk to linnet bc she seems to be the sane person of the group ( i mean fair enough because zigg looks like he's doing arson and smokes crack on a daily basis and netero is a tall man who looks like he wants to fight you ) but at some point the slow realisation that she's just as fucked up as those two mfs behind her hits them.
